Harry Kane celebrates the demise of August with a brace for England, while Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson delivers a not-so subtle reminder of his attacking credentials to club boss Jurgen Klopp with a fine strike for Scotland.

A number of other Premier League players impress, most notably Christian Eriksen with a goal and two assists for Denmark and new Burnley forward Chris Wood with a hat-trick for New Zealand.

Here are the notes from Friday’s global schedule.

Some home nation comforts for Harry

There was a sense of inevitability about Harry Kane’s goals for England in a 4-0 win in Malta.

The opponents, however well-organised and stubborn, were decidedly limited, the Spurs man’s early-season statistics positively screamed ‘he’s due a goal’ and, of course, it wasn’t August anymore.

Assuming he comes through Monday’s home match with Slovakia unscathed, we must now wonder whether his international form been enough to convince his 1.39 million owners to hold.

Interestingly, Kane’s Net Transfers edged into positive numbers following his goals, although that was a brief spike and he has since dipped into deficit once again – just.

Over 111,000 have shifted Kane out of their squads ahead of Gameweek 4 to this point. He has suffered total Net Transfer loss of over 313,000 since Gameweek 1, without dropping in price from 12.5.

Everton at Goodison Park will be a stern test for Spurs and Kane, although there is room for optimism.

Ronald Koeman’s defence have allowed 46 shots on goal and 14 on target – only five teams have conceded more. However, that ranking is perhaps skewed by that fact that the Toffees have faced trips to both Manchester City and Chelsea in Gameweeks 2 and 3.

They shipped nine shots to Stoke City at home in Gameweek 1, with the defence allowing just a single effort on target. Indeed, Everton were one of just five sides who did not concede a big chance over the opening weekend.

But Spurs and Kane were impressive in their only away trip so far, again in Gameweek 1.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side fired 18 shots at Newcastle United, with ten from inside the penalty area and three big chances created.

A blank on Merseyside would spark another steep decline in Kane’s ownership but, even in that scenario, there is a strong case to sit tight.

Kane will face a very favourable run of opponents (SWA, whu, hud, BOU) once that Goodison Park fixture is out of the way.

One match against a bus-parking Malta does not constitute a renaissance, but Kane’s Friday night return should at least kill off any theory that the striker is low on confidence.

A tale of two left-backs

Liverpool full-back Andrew Robertson has started his career on Merseyside in some style.

The Scottish international has played just one league match in three for the Reds. However, he produced nine points from a clean sheet and maximum bonus earned on the back of a superb attacking display at home to Crystal Palace in Gameweek 2.

Robertson created two big chances, fired in two attempts and put over 10 crosses in a sparkling Reds debut against the Eagles.

His progress was derailed by an absence for the Gameweek 3 meeting with Arsenal. He missed the 4-0 victory due to the birth of his child and with Alberto Moreno impressing against the Gunners, a Robertson recall at Manchester City in Gameweek 4 is far from guaranteed.

But he has strengthened his case with Friday’s performance. Robertston scored with a fine long-range effort as Scotland chalked up an impressive 3-0 win away in Lithuania last night.

His 4.9 price puts him in the mid-range for Liverpool defenders, but if Klopp were to field him more regularly, his 2.2% ownership will surely soar.

Another left-back, Southampton and England’s Ryan Bertrand (5.5), was also among the Friday night goals.

His price tag marks him out as the most expensive Saints defender, but you get much for the money – most importantly, security of starts.

New Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has bolstered his defensive options with the summer signing of Wesley Hoedt. And with Virgil van Dijk remaining at St Mary’s, owners of Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida face uncertain times.

There is a chance that Pellegrino could be the latest to consider a switch to a three at the back. Either way, Bertrand’s status as a Southampton starter – whether at full-back or wing-back – looks assured.

His team-mate on the opposite flank – Cedric (5.0) – is cheaper, though Bertrand’s role on set-pieces has so far helped him outperform the Portuguese in the Bonus Points System (63 vs 58).

Bertrand also has goals in his locker. He’s hit five over the last three seasons, while Cedric is yet to open his Saints account.

It still looks wise to cover the Saints defence. Pellegrino’s rearguard have earned two clean sheets so far, and only a Gameweek 6 visit from Man United provides a major test all the way through to Gameweek 12.

Elsewhere…

Danny Welbeck was England’s other scorer in Malta, with assists coming from Dele Alli, Jordan Henderson and second-half substitute Marcus Rashford.

Burnley’s new striker Chris Wood scored on his Clarets debut against Spurs, and he underlined his form with a hat-trick for New Zealand in a 6-1 thrashing of the Solomon Islands.

Crystal Palace are yet to score in the league, but their midfielder James McArthur was among the goals for Scotland, while Southampton’s Steven Davis notched a goal and an assist as Northern Ireland laboured to a 3-0 win in San Marino.

Spurs’ Christian Eriksen maintained an encouraging start to the season – 22 points from three assists and five bonus – with a goal and two assists as Denmark brushed aside Poland 4-0.

Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin continued his positive start to the season with a strike for England U21’s away in Holland. Team-mate Ademola Lookman provided the assist.

Norway and Bournemouth striker Josh King opened his account for the season with a penalty in his country’s 2-0 win over Azerbaijan.

Meanwhile, Nigerian internationals Victor Moses and Kelechi Iheanacho were both on the scoresheet in a 4-0 win over Cameroon. Chelsea wing-back Moses also provided an assist. Stoke City have concerns over Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting who was forced off after just 14 minutes of his appearance from the bench for Cameroon in that match.

Elsewhere, Newcastle winger Christian Atsu followed up his assist in the 3-0 win over West Ham with another for Ghana in a 1-1 draw with Congo. His team-mate Mikel Merino also impressed, scoring a superb solo effort in Spain U21’s 3-0 win over Italy.

Firmino is so awkwardly priced - too expensive for a 3rd striker and a bit below that 2nd striker bracket, so it got me thinking - how do you plan to use him? 2nd or 3rd striker?

I started with him as a 3rd striker, but now I'm leaning towards using him as a 2nd striker with someone like Abraham/Chica/Mounie as 3rd. Makes it easier to get Alonso and opens the door for Hazard (once he's an option). The obvious problem will be the lack of forward captain options as only 1 of Kaku/Kane will be available.

    Thoughts?

    1. HALFSPACE

      3rd striker

      Lovely price imo...

      1. b✪mber
        9 years, 1 month ago

I think he's under-priced (if you account for the penalties), but the problem is structure. With him as 3rd striker you're probably missing out on 1, but more likely 2 players on other positions. With him as a 2nd striker you're missing out on a captain. Trying to figure which is worse...

        1. Galza
          9 years, 1 month ago

I've got him with Kane and Joselu...
Not worried about captain option because I have Sanchez and Hazard in midfield....

I recall him looking a bit disinterested on the wing towards the end of last season before he woke up for the run-in.

                      9 years, 1 month ago

That was when he didn't know whether he was coming or going...
Now he knows the score he will want to knuckle down show other clubs what they will be getting next season...

      2. Pariße
        9 years, 1 month ago

Sure, but you wouldn't have him instead of Kane/Lukaku/Lacazette/Aguero/Jesus, you'd have him instead of Gabbiadini, Chicharito, Mounie, which makes him relatively expensive.

        1. Galza
          9 years, 1 month ago

If you think about it, you only really have him and Vardy that are of any worth in that so called bracket....

          1. Pariße
            9 years, 1 month ago

Indeed. I think there was no one in that bracket last season.

              9 years, 1 month ago

last season it was Kun/Kane for first and Costa/Kaku for second striker. I think Gru was around 8.5M, but overall that bracket was pretty much non existent.

Vardy could well turn out to be under priced too but I would say Firmino more so..

      3. Pariße
        9 years, 1 month ago

I see you use him as a 2nd striker, so he's relatively cheap, but I'm sure you get it, Bomber has a good point.

        1. Galza
          9 years, 1 month ago

Yeah I get it but I don't see it being to much of a captain problem...
I actually prefer to only have 1 striker captain option. Hate having to have pick between 2 big hitters.

He's delivering 2nd striker returns and is on pens. I'm less sure about his captain credentials though given the risk of rotation.

      1. b✪mber
        9 years, 1 month ago

That's my line of thinking - defo no-go for captaincy with the rotation factor, but more than a good option as 2nd striker.

That's the problem - at least 2 transfers to turn him into a 2nd striker and use the cash. At least 2 transfers to revert back if I'm wrong.

I actually play a mix of 4-3-3 and 3-4-3 with RLC,Carroll and 2 4.5M defs. playing him a 3rd striker is the easiest in a setup like that, that's for sure.

    5. fedolefan
      9 years, 1 month ago

He is not an option as a 3rd striker in a 3-4-3 right now given so few budget mids are delivering.

    6. redwiing
      9 years, 1 month ago

What about Abraham up top and Salah/Mane in mid... Feel like that combo would potentially bring more points all round and free up Alonso at the back?

      1. b✪mber

🙂 trying to either help or screw a few teams up, lol. I got my WC , so I'll probably venture into the unknown and use him as a 2nd striker. Another thing to also consider (for those that have him as a 3rd striker) is who is your 2nd - mine is Kun, so I think that makes it a bit easier to try out Firmino as 2nd (and Kun out).

            1. Galza

              I've got Kane,Firm and Joselu....

                9 years, 1 month ago

I'll probably go the Chica route. Him being a nailed and a bit more expensive compared to the rest helps. If some one cheaper than Chicha pops up, I can downgrade and If I need to admit the mistake and upgrade, than him being 7.1M makes it a bit easier (compared to the 5-6M options) to gather the cash and go back up to the 10M+ options. It pretty much works both ways.

Play Dann. Not sure what happens with Sakho back though. They will concede less but will he drop out.

      1. ⚔★Vibudh★⚔

Oh,Well I guess I should play him still gets a 1 pointer and cant expect more than 3 from TC anyway

        1. fedolefan
          9 years, 1 month ago

Yeah, I had planned to transfer him out this week, but am holding for the next two given Sakho is back. Just find some cash to upgrade him to Maguire or Bavies I think after GW5.

Ayew is a good player. I wouldn't be so sure. It could go either way. Tammy needs to produce over next couple

    a) Sanchez

    b) Lukaku

Lukaku for now given the state of Arsenal and Sánchez having wanted to go.

    2. noquarternt

      Right now? Lukaku

Potentially Sanchez if he has a few hauls of course.

Huddersfield Town, with 2.33 points per game, are top of the all time PPG Premier League table.

    All time champions 😀

    2 FT
    Kolasinac -> Maguire
    Ramsey -> Brady
    Jesus -> Kane

    Forster Elliot
    Alonso Maguire Kompany Suttner Mee
    Eriksen Brady Mkhi Carroll Ince
    Kane Lukaku JRod

Ince and Kompany also suspect but I think the three at the top are decent moves?

    1. noquarternt
      9 years, 1 month ago

Wouldn't lose Kolasinac. He 'should' be playing an Alonso type role and has a few easy games now. It would be extremely Arsenal-esque to now thrash Bournemouth.

Would wait on Jesus to Kane as well. GW5 move in my mind.

Hmmm. Could just leave it with the middle one and get same team next week without a hit.

Would also give me time to decide Kola or Komp out.

        Thanks.

So had a tinker at my team and i can honestly say im happy with this bar Tuanzebe who obv wont be playing but he freed up funds.

    Foster

    Cedric, Naughton, Löwe

    Pogba, david silva, salah, sanches

    Lukaku, kane, morata

    Bench: elliot, cork, simpson, Tuanzebe

    2. fedolefan

If you're going that cheap, I'd recommend dropping Cedric to a 4.5 and having all 5 playing 4.5m defenders. Playing 3 every week out of those 4 is not recommended.

After Eriksen smashing it last night I am still unsure due to CL factor...

    a) Alli

    b) Eriksen

Tempted by Bony at 6.0 once hes fit, used to be a decent FPL option.

Wouldn't touch with a barge pole. Unfit, had a shocker at Stoke. Hughes not signing him again shows a big problem.

Haven't seen many people with a Liverpool midfield double up as a Firmino alternative? Not saying its better, just wondering the pro's and cons behind a line up like this...

    Foster / Elliot
    Alonso / Cedric / Naughton
    Salah / Pogba / Mane / Atsu
    Lukaku / Kane / Abraham

    1. noquarternt
      9 years, 1 month ago

Firmino is too good to miss out on. Price + pens + points = huge.
