Liverpool completed one of the more eye-catching signings of deadline day with the addition of Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for an undisclosed fee, understood to be worth £35 million.

The 24-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal at Anfield, with his desire to play in central midfield thought to have been a key factor in his decision.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp refused to be drawn on on where he plans to use the England international, however:

“I hear a lot of talk about positions but let’s talk about the player; he is someone with really good abilities who always gives everything for his team. A player that is positive and willing to take risks to try and make positive things happen.”

The History

Oxlade-Chamberlain linked up with Southampton’s academy at the age of seven and progressed to make his professional debut against Huddersfield Town in March 2010.

He made 43 appearances for Saints in all competitions, totalling 10 goals and nine assists, before joining Arsenal in August 2011 in a deal worth up to £15 million, including add-ons.

But a combination of injuries and a lack of consistency meant Oxlade-Chamberlain never managed to play more than 1,600 minutes in any single Premier League season.

He was part of the squad that won three FA Cups and played in a number of different positions, although he was primarily used as a right-sided midfielder.

During his six-year spell with the Gunners, Oxlade-Chamberlain registered 20 goals and 32 assists in 198 matches in all competitions.

Capped by England at U18, U19 and U21 levels, making a total of 12 appearances, Oxlade-Chamberlain was handed his senior debut against Norway in May 2012.

He has made 27 appearances for the national team, producing six goals and five assists.

The Prospects

Oxlade-Chamberlain may, at some point, provide back-up Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in the wide forward positions, although it’s clear the 24-year-old sees himself operating in central midfield.

His chances of cementing a regular starting role look vital to his Fantasy potential but, as we know, Klopp is currently blessed with plenty of options.

Jordan Henderson, Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum have all enjoyed strong starts to the season, while Barcelona’s failure to prise away Philippe Coutinho from Merseyside leaves the influential Brazilian in the mix at Anfield.

The signing of Salah is expected to see Coutinho shifted into midfield, operating in an inside-left position in Klopp’s preferred 4-3-3 formation.

Adam Lallana, meanwhile, should return from a thigh injury in mid-October, while James Milner is being viewed as a central midfielder this season, with Alberto Moreno and Andrew Robertson vying for the left-back berth.

So while Oxlade-Chamberlain should shake off his recent wing-back role at Arsenal to battle for a midfield berth, he is surely set to be part of a continuous rotation policy.

Klopp demonstrated during the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace in Gameweek 2 that he will look to shuffle the pack around UEFA Champions League matches. That is a big concern with the group stages getting underway between Gameweeks 4 and 5.

Last season, Oxlade-Chamberlain enjoyed his best return in terms of assists in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), producing a total of seven.

He averaged a key pass every 48.84 minutes, which bettered both Wijnaldum (69.26) and Emre Can (71.76).

Those numbers suggest that he could provide Liverpool with improved creativity from central areas, although it’s difficult to read too much into the underlying statistics given that he played in such a variety of positions for Arsenal.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has never been a major goalscoring threat.

He is yet to score more than two goals in any single Premier League campaign and only averaged a shot every 55.82 minutes last season. In contrast, Wijnaldum and Emre Can recorded six and five goals respectively.

Only Manchester United (10) have scored more than Liverpool (eight) so far in 2017/18, while Klopp’s side lead the way for shots from inside the penalty area, with 39.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has the energy and thrust required for a box-to-box role and, if afforded the freedom to push forward, his potential for attacking returns should be enhanced.

But with just nine goals and 19 assists over the past six seasons, he has a lot to prove as an attractive Fantasy option.

With the added rotation concerns, and the fact Salah, Mane and Roberto Firmino are all in red-hot form, there appears little temptation to risk investment at this time.

Indeed, the upcoming fixtures (mci BUR lei new MUN tot) appear to give us time to assess the situation. Although, as Liverpool proved in the 4-0 win over Arsenal, Klopp’s side can defy the schedule to register goals against any opponent.

Ironically, Thursday’s move may have a greater short-term impact back at Arsenal.

Certainly, the prospects of defenders Hector Bellerin and Sead Kolasinac seem improved without Oxlade-Chamberlain providing competition in the wing-back roles.

Bellerin now appears to have little or no threat for his start, while only Nacho Monreal – who has been playing more as a central defender since Arsene Wenger switched to a three-man defence – offers competition to Kolasinac on the left.

As for Oxlade-Chamberlain, his price tag of just 6.0 in FPL (8.9 in Sky Sports) may eventually see him emerge as a consideration. But at present, our three Liverpool slots should perhaps be reserved for their buoyant front three.

We should also have one eye on a Klopp defensive option given their recent record of seven clean sheets from the last nine Premier League Gameweeks.

Oxlade-Chamberlain got the move he desired but, in Fantasy terms, we remain cautiously optimistic on its impact on our season.

What do we make of Tammy then so far?

I would really like to take the plunge with him but just this Bony situation annoys me.

      I am really tempted too.

He could be such a great enabler at 5.5.

He is so much better than Bony. The only things that count against him are sentimentality and experience

Is there someone on FFS earning commission for the Swansea striker ownership stats?

They aren't very good - although Bony might be one to keep an eye on.

Bony is a huge fans favourite, is back where he and his family are comfortable and familiar, the club know his strengths and weaknesses, he knows many of the players. With this in mind I think he will get up to match fitness in 3 or 4 game weeks coming of the bench for Tammy.

The club know how to play to his qualities (unlike Stoke) and his goal scoring record at Man City wasn't that bad at all and he had a very good goal per minute ratio in all competitions.

The big question is whether Tammy and Bony can play together or do they simply occupy the same position on the pitch.

I sense sone wishful thinking on here regarding retaining Tammy ... only time will tell

Hi guys, what would you prefer as part of WC changes:

    A. Maguire / Eriksen / Morata

    B. Alonso / Atsu / Kane

    Already have:

    Forster / Elliot
    Jones / Naughton / Hegazi / Robertson
    Pogba / Silva / Richarlison / Carroll
    Lukaku / Firmino

    Thanks!

Is anybody getting Sanchez for GW4?

I know he is massively expensive at 11.9, but he is another captain alternative to Kane and Lukaku.

It's not like he can just sit and sulk, Arsenal need him and he needs the gametime and to play well, especially because it's a World Cup year.

    Thoughts?

Hasn't he threaten to go on strike.
This is something he can afford seeing as mcy would still try and buy him in jan again regardless.
I really don't think he will start this week. Things are still to raw with him and as we know he's petulant enough to cause a scene and strike. Maybe by gw5 he'll be ready to knuckle down again.

He was a great player, first of all. And he was a very successful manager at Ajax.

Evidently his preferred style of play will take quite some time to bed in at Palace because it is very different to what they did before and his squad is cut out for the Allardyce direct game, not the FdB Ajax style. He had a similar problem at Inter where they pulled the plug before he had a chance to get what he want established (he only got 14 games).

If Palace want to change their approach (which according to their chairman is exactly what they want) then they will need to give FdB a season at least. Probably three seasons. The question is whether they will get cold feet as Inter did. I think de Boer will produce a good outcome at Palace if given the time but I have no idea whether he will get it.

Succeeding in the Eredivise doesn't make a good manager. Take it from a die hard Inter fan, his short stint at Inter was a disaster and tactically it was clear from day 1 that he is out of his league. He had a very good squad that could have easily challenged for CL places and he destroyed Inter's season. If CP continue with him for long, he will get them relegated.

          • 11 Years

I won't take it from a diehard Inter fan because that's a biased viewpoint.

FdB was the first manager to win 4 consecutive Eredivisie titles. I know it's not one of the big 5 leagues but it's not Mickey Mouse either (as Ajax' run to the EL final last season demonstrates).

The problem is that it is a radical change that is being attempted @ Palace. But I don't think you can question FdB's record really, the stint at Inter was so short that you can't fairly draw any conclusions from it.

I tell you what. Never mind what he has done - he has already made a bog of Palace. He is trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear - and any fool, not Brian Clough, could have told him that.

I suspect there may be a problem in their dressing room, too. That was quite a hard bunch of players, but he is working against the grain, not with it.

Ps my English might not be as good to understand your comment sorry in advance... 🙂

Of course it's a good squad. But it's a squad designed to play 4 at the back, with either one or two DMs.

There is nowhere the quality that you need, if you are to play 3 at the back. Or the speed. Or the strength.

Well, indeed. But that is the whole problem.

De Boer has already shown his hand, and the payers are now on shifting sands. So even if he reverts, they have no certainties about what he wants.

But as soon as Luka Milivojevic was moved to the back three, they - and I - were done.

I agree, Doosra. But surely that is exactly what he was brought in to do? If you read interviews with Parish it's clear that's the club's strategy. They no longer want to be a direct-style team.

It might be a poor decision by Palace to go that way but that's another argument.

Fair enough. But, imo, then they should have given him 200m. As I say, structurally, that's a dead duck, with the current team.

Probably is. We had to go through a similar thing at Chelsea with AVB. It's not pretty and it's not fun. And Chelsea had much better and more adaptable players than Palace do.

Benteke has to play in a direct team, otherwise he's useless. It seems weird to have a player like that as your most expensive signing and then decide to develop a style based on his weaknesses. 😕

CP has shown time and again they will get cold feet. Fdb wont last a season. A good manager/coach would be able to work something from his given tools, then work on intergrating his "style". If he doesnt understand the needs of the EPL.... he can bring ajax to the EL final 10 times in 10 seasons that wont matter. Different league ; different ball game.

    B)

  13. Third striker options

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Third striker options

With many teams fielding two premium strikers the third striker spot needs to offer value and the chance of goals. Who is your preferred third striker?

Are you willing to spend more on a third expensive option? Or are you happy to go cheap? Or is it better to just field a non playing/weal sub 5.0 third striker on your bench and go for a 3-5-2 formation?

Here are five options to consider to get the discussion going….all five are the only ones to register four shots on target this season (Kane and Lukaku are the only ones to register more than this).

    Hernandez – West Ham

Four shots on target, five in the box, with a shooting accuracy of 57.1% and two goals already bodes well for his prospects.

He has good fixtures too – HUB, wba, TOT, SWA, bur

But West Ham’s form as a team looks poor and there is the chance that a repeat of their dire Newcastle performance could be repeated.

On paper a great option at 7.1.

    Rodriguez (5.9)– West Brom

Seven shots in the box, four on target and a 50% shooting success rate and a goal already.

Great fixtures - bha, WHU, ars, WAT, lei

But can we really trust a Pulis striker to deliver regularly?

    Mounie (6.1) - Huddersfield

Seven shots in the box and a 50% shooting accuracy bode well for upcoming fixtures – whu, LEI, bur, TOT, swa

But can a striker from a promoted side with little Premier League experience score many more braces?

    Rashford (7.5) – Manchester United

Six shots in the box and a shooting accuracy of 44.4% look good. But will he start and will he continue to be overshadowed by the Manchester United midfielders and Lukaku.

A lot may depend on whether he is favoured for the League (stk, EVE, sot, CRY, liv) or Europe over the coming weeks.

    Firmino (8.6) – Liverpool

The most expensive of this group and arguably a premium striker trapped nicely in a mid level price tag.

Two goals already and five close range efforts suggest he can still offer value. But is a frontline of Firmino and two premium 10m+ forwards feasible long term?

Fixtures are middling ( mic, BUR, lei, new, MUN) – but Liverpool may actually do better in the harder ones.

Good price. good fixtures. Just one shot on target though and a terrible 16.7% shooting accuracy rate.

Could that be because they've had bad fixtures....or is he still not quite Premier League quality? One to monitor though definitely.

Chicharito for me. Underpriced, a proven goalscorer, and with attractive fixtures. Even with West Ham playing poorly he could still sniff out goals. I'm toying with the idea of going with Kane/Lukaku, Firmino, and Chicharito, which I think is a front 3 with goals in it, and has the benefit of liberating some cash for use as and when I need it.

Surprised you didn't mention wee Tammy. Good upcoming fixtures and from the Bristol City highlights of last year looks what they refer to as a "natural' finisher.

Currently rocking Firmino as my third striker, one of my very few good decisions so far this year after a poor start. Kane & Lukaku obviously the other two.

I was tempted to kneejerk him out for Hernandez last week to free up funds to boost my flagging midfield, but luckily I held for the Arsenal game and no way am I ditching him now. A real conundrum on my hands as I'm too wary of downgrading 'the big two' at the moment.

The only other one of those mentioned above I'd be interested in would be Hernandez with those fixtures, although I'm keeping an eye on Joselu now that Gayle is seemingly out in the cold.

I feel like you should either get Firmino, one of the lesser premium options like Laca or Morata, or go dirt cheap and get the likes of Abraham or Ayew and then pump the extra funds into midfield. The options around 6.0-7.5m are basically a lottery, was a merry go round last season with that price bracket as well.

Firmino my second, rather than third striker.

Current line-up is looking likely to be Kane, Firmino, Calvert-Lewin

Each week I'll have to choose one of Naughton, Hegazi, Calvert-Lewin, 4.5 mid to play so I have good flexibility for the winter schedule

I'm on Firmino but a lot is going to depend on:
Premium mids coming back - mainly Sanchez & Hazard
Any significant CL rotation might force me strengthen cover elsewhere.
But generally i don't see any value in budget 3rd strikers if you're going 3-4-3. Seems a bit of an anomaly to refer to players costing as much 7m as budget options.
3-5-2 seems to require the cheapest starting striker and having at least one good defender on the bench as cover.

If Firmino is on pens, as he seems to be, it feels that he is a must have, regardless of who your other two strikers are. I think Liverpool will get a lot of pens with Mane and Salah running at defences. I remember Gerrard being borderline essential when he was on pens and he was pretty much reliant on pens for his points whereas Firmino isn't.

Personally, I dont think there is value in fielding two 10m+ strikers. I have Lukaku for captaincy, alongside Firmino (and ayew). Liberates funds to fill your team with strong value players, instead of gambling on speculative bandwagons and underacheivers. My team:

      Forster
      Alonso / Bertrand / Davies / Hegazi
      Eriksen / Mkhi / Salah / Pogba
      Lukaku (c) / Firmino

Firmino, great value at the tip of an all firing Liverpool front line. Also on penalties which adds to his stock - has calmly scored 2 of 2 (1 in pre-season). Liv can/will score against everyone in the league, fixtures less relevant.

There's no value in this position so far, it's all hit and hope so bypassing it and putting the money elsewhere.

Let's be honest, the best option is Chicharito, for 7m would you rather play him every week or Alonso?

        There's no contest.

Where does Sam Clucas play, is he a holding midfielder or more of an attacking player?

Might consider him an option as my 5th midfielder. Don't see him sitting on the bench as he is the Jacks most expensive signing

    RP : DDG - Elliot
    Ake - Kolasinac - Yoshida - Hegazi - Hunemeier
    Eriksen - Pogs - Salah - Mooy - Carroll
    Kane - Lukaku(C) - Quaner (0 FT and 0.4 ITB)

GTG? Not sure about Ake too. How's the team in general?

It's pretty good. Defence is a bit if a worry though, Kola, Yoshi and Hegazi mightn't nailed. And Bournemouth look poor so far.

Running player comparisons with Xhaka in the members area.

No other player at 5.6m or below comes close to him. Atsu gets the ball in the box but is hardly involved. Looks like a I'll be holding Xhaka and wasting a free transfer this week.

Questions need to be asked why you have him in the first instance. 😕

I brought him in because of his involvement, chances created and on the back of two assists. I am looking at options to move him on. However there's no one at that price point. He could be a good shout against Bou this gameweek.

Surely it's best to hold Jesus for now?? Other options in price range don't have good fixtures and Man City will start clicking soon enough. Also seems nailed in Man City attack.

The evidence we have so far from last and this season is that he starts when fully fit. Of course, that will probably change when the schedule gets busy but I'm not using transfers to get him out until I see more.

A part of me feels that the Newcastle game could be huge for Tammy FPL wise as if he scores and does well then it will mean two things....

    1) It will keep Bony out of the team for a while perhaps.

    2) His price will rocket

Maybe worth taking the risk on him for this game as most will probably bench him vs Spurs
