Liverpool show no sign of a hangover in their first match of the post-Philippe Coutinho era, serving up a seven-goal thriller at Anfield that finally ends Manchester City’s unbeaten domestic run.

Heading into Gameweek 23, the Brazilian’s move to Barcelona played a significant part in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfer market – Roberto Firmino (206,000+) and Mohamed Salah (179,000+) were second and third only to Coutinho for sales prior to Saturday’s 2pm deadline.

Those managers were made to regret their decision after both supplied a goal and assist in the 4-3 win over Pep Guardiola’s side.

Salah, the third top captain choice (8.6%) for the Gameweek, produced a tenth double-figure haul of the campaign to move 32 points clear at the summit in FPL.

With five very favourable looking fixtures in the next six (swa hud sot WHU NEW) it’s no real surprise that the Egyptian is the most bought (51,000+) player over the last 24 hours as Jurgen Klopp’s side quashed any early doubts that they will struggle without their former playmaker.

In a day where his nearest midfield challenger, City’s Raheem Sterling, was hauled off on 70 minutes with a single point to his name, Salah again reminded us of his peerless points production – he’s now delivered a goal or assist in 13 of his last 14 league appearances.

Firmino, meanwhile, has now played a part in two goals in four of his last five Gameweek starts in a superb run of festive form.

The Brazilian is now up to second spot in the FPL forward standings behind Harry Kane on 117 points. His current tally of 10 goals in just one shy of last season’s 11, while his total of six assists is joint-top among forwards and just five less than 2016/17.

That upcoming schedule, allied with his relatively kind price point of 9.1, means he is the third most bought player over the last 24 hours, having turned the heads of 38,000 new owners.

Mane and Oxlade-Chamberlain stake a claim

With Coutinho now gone, both Sadio Mane and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made their presence felt in the Reds’ attack.

Handed a role on the left of the Reds’ front three, the Senegal international earned a third successive league start for the first time since Gameweek 4.

Mane matched Firmino’s three efforts on goal – only Salah (six) managed more – and scored at Anfield for the first time since Gameweek 3.

With two goals and an assist in the Reds’ last three league outings, his Fantasy appeal is on the rise as a result of increased pitch-time.

Yet at a price of 5.6 to Mane’s 9.3, it’s Oxlade-Chamberlain’s display that could shake up midfields.

After firing an early opener, he also chipped in with an assist to deliver a 12-point haul – his first double-digit return of the season.

The summer signing seems to be growing into his central midfield role, with his driving runs from the centre of the park posing City plenty of problems.

He’s now started four of the last six Gameweeks, producing returns on three of those occasions.

Since arriving at Anfield, though, his pitch-time still remains an issue – only eight of his 20 appearances for Liverpool have been as a starter.

That’s in stark comparison to Mane, who has made 14 of his 15 outings in the starting line-up.

If he can kick on from yesterday’s showing and nail down a spot on Klopp’s teamsheet, Oxlade-Chamberlain could offer an outstanding cut-price route into Klopp’s impressive attack.

Karius the new number one

Despite conceding three times, it’s worth remembering that Liverpool went into Sunday’s match with the most resilient home defensive record in the league.

Klopp handed Loris Karius only his fourth league start of the season and, according to his manager’s post-match comments, the German has now usurped Simon Mignolet as the Reds’ first-choice keeper ahead of those favourable upcoming fixtures:

“He’s the number one, he might make mistakes but this is life. We will not make any changes. When it comes to goalkeepers you have to make a decision and stick with it. He will stay in goal”.

Liverpool were without big-money defender Virgil van Dijk, who missed out with a minor hamstring problem. However, the Dutchman – who has already been acquired by 15,000+ managers for Gameweek 24 – took to Twitter post-match to say “see you in Swansea”, indicating he could be back in contention for their trip to the Liberty Stadium a week today.

While the likes of Joe Gomez failed to impress on the right, Andrew Robertson’s display on the opposite flank suggests that Alberto Moreno will struggle to reclaim a regular role once fit again. Priced at just 4.7 in FPL, the Scot’s total of seven successful tackles is joint-top for the Gameweek.

City’s big-hitters fail on Merseyside

Yesterday’s tea-time encounter boasted five of the top 10 captains for Gameweek 23, though it was the visitors who arrived with three of them.

Drafted in by 191,000+ FPL managers last week, Sergio Aguero sported 6.6% of armbands after scoring six times in as many matches across all competitions.

Yet the Argentine had to make do with just a single assist as his scoring drought at Anfield continued – he has failed to find the net in six away appearances against the Merseysiders since joining Man City.

Nonetheless, with back-to-back home encounters against Newcastle and West Brom up next for the league leaders, Aguero remains one of the leading captaincy contenders in the short-term, particularly with Gabriel Jesus thought to be ruled out until next month.

Kevin De Bruyne (3%) and the aforementioned Raheem Sterling (2.5%) were also among the main armband candidates, but both suffered rare off-days, managing just one shot and one key pass between them.

Meanwhile, David Silva’s Fantasy stock continues to dip – he warmed the bench from start to finish and has now failed to play a part in four of City’s last six league outings.

Gundogan impresses again

The main beneficiary from Silva’s recent teamsheet omission, Ilkay Gundogan emerged as the top-scoring player from yesterday’s encounter.

The German delivered a goal, assist and maximum bonus for 13 points – the second time he’s achieved that total in the last six Gameweeks.

Demanding a fee of just 5.3 in FPL, Gundogan has now started four of the last six as the Silva replacement, recording two goals and as many assists. Yet Guardiola’s rotation ensures he remains a risky acquisition.

Leroy Sane and Bernardo Silva were also among the goals for the visitors, with the German (thanks to Kyle Walker’s assist) ending a scoring drought that went all the way back to Gameweek 10.

Having peaked in price at 9.0 in Gameweek 13, that lack of output has triggered a drop to 8.4, with his ownership plummeting to just 11%.

Nonetheless, Sane’s recent pitch-time suggests he remains pivotal to Guardiola’s plans – this was only the second time this season that he’s been handed three successive 90-minute league outings.

However, Guardiola will be forced to make changes to that flank with Fabian Delph suffering a knee injury at Anfield. He departed on 31 minutes with the City boss remarking post-match that he expects Delph to face a spell on the sidelines.

“He will be out, I think, for a while. I don’t know if it will be a lot of time but he will be out for a while. It is his knee, he turned his knee.”

Delph’s absence could force Guardiola into the market, with first choice left-back Benjamin Mendy expected to be sidelined least until April.

In the meantime, Danilo could be used in that role and – at just 5.0 – would offer a cut-price route into the City defence.

The other option would be to drop Sane back to a wing-back role in home matches, deploying Bernardo in the front three. That’s a potential situation to monitor when considering Sane’s stock.

But with the Champions League a factor in February, Guardiola will surely move to find extra cover at left-back.

Man City v Liverpool – your transfer targets

The clash between these two attacking sides rumbles on into this week’s transfer market, with both having strong short term fixtures.

Players from each side are vying for your attention. Here are a few issues that FPL managers are facing

Salah – if he was ditched recently arguably he looks essential for the upcoming schedule. Are you a ditcher ready to get him back, or are you going Salah less for a while?

Aguero v Firmino – both have form, but one is 2.5 or so cheaper. Which are you looking to get in if neither are already in your side. Given the price difference and strong returns is Firmino arguably the better option? Or is Aguero in a league of his own for your attention?

Mane v the City mids – Is Mane now a great option, with Coutinho out? The stats suggest he does better in the absence of Phil. Starts should also be more secure? But can he compete with KDB, Sane or Sterling (for those still without him)?

Which players do you already own from these sides and which are you looking to get in?

      Salah and firmino
      Sterling and OTA
      Enough for me
Would love rather KDB then Aguero, beacuse firm is better value then Kun,but can't find a place in midfield

That's my quartet too. Must admit I'm eyeing up Mane as a short term Spurs mid replacement possibility from GWK 25.

The only way I can get Aguero realistically is to dump firmino and that is not happening any time soon in his form.

No, planning to get him after the poor fixtures though.

Currently looking to ditch Eriksen and Alli post saints - although eriksen may depart before.

Just going to go into those bad Spurs games with Kane.

Without that ridiculous ‘assist’, Firmino wouldnt have scored better than Aguero yesterday, though.

This match was ideal for Pool attackers but I think in the long run Firmino’s returns are gonna dry up a bit. He will drop deeper vs defences sitting deep, + hasnt scored as much without than with Coutinho in the past.

Well I ditch Salah and have already made early transfers to get him back. Lost Eriksen for it. Was going to try and get Aguero but decide for Firmino. Reason being Aguero is not captain material anymore and therefore too expensive. Lack or double digits and questions over play time. Captains will now be between Kane and Salah most weeks. Now have to squeeze Alonso in ASAP 😉

We have very similar teams... I have Pickford (Pope) Dunk (Duffy) and Ogbonna (Kenny) but I also have ruddy 3.4m ITB. Any suggestions what to do with it? Current plan is to see how Lingard does tonight, then perhaps bring in Mahrez/ Mane. Son could become the other in a week or two. Would need to downgrade a defender, slightly.

Mike, can't say those moves look risky, but I kind of understand - I would be nervous changing a sub at your OR.

My approach to this (Jonty's post) - I'm not bringing back Salah straight away because he's rubbish (and Swansea's defence is top notch).

I'm going with Aguero, Kane, Firmino up front this week. And then bring in Salah for Son next week. My defence hates me.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I'm ditching Kane to afford Aguero and Firmino both. Kane has horrific fixtures until GW 28 apart from next week, while Aguero has fantastic fixtures.

Aguero back to Kane is a simple swap then, especially considering Aguero will likely have a blank in 28 because of the league cup final.

Suicide in my opinion. Kane will do better in open expansive games as he creates more space for himself. Liverpool away and Arsenal at home are not that difficult. Don’t let the red 4’s influence you.

Liverpool have the best home defensive record in the premier league. I'll admit that it's a risky move, but selling Kane allows me to afford Aguero and Firmino both.

I don't doubt Kane will score, but either one of those could probably outscore him in the same period. I'm at 2,000 overall rank and ahead in my main mini leagues, so comfortable enough taking the punt to see if I can break into the top 100.

Nah Anfield has been one of the toughest places to score this year and Mourinho will park the bus as always. I'd bet against him scoring in either. Arsenal at home is a better chance but Kosc should be back by then which improves their defence substantially.

As you can see i have no place for Kun. I don't wanna sell anyone from this team. But I could consider Danilo as my third City player since the fixtures are great and i don't see them conceding a goal vs Wba etc.Only problem would be too much top players for a blank in 28, but still plenty of time.

Keeping Salah and Sterling, getting Firmino as an upgrade on a cheaper forward, supporting a 352.

Seems obvious - Firmino will continue to score in Coutinho's absence, Aguero is too expensive for the small number of league fixtures until Jesus surfaces again, and all the other mids short of KDB are rotation risks.

Salah Sterling Son Arnautovic Lingard is looking pretty template at the moment, Kane and Firmino up front.

Currently light on these have Salah, sterling and otadmedi Will be looking at getting 3 liv attack by GW 28 or before

I was waiting on this result on city result now being unbeaten in PL has gone, as season wears on will be more rotation risk with city if league all but won so not looking to bring in more

will look to have 3 Liv attach by GW 28 so Gradually get over coming weeks without hits if poss, if money no object would be Salah, firm and mane, so may look at Ox if output warrants that

To share my thoughts on Jonty's post:

Salah: for those ditcher, please bring him back asap. Both his stat and PPM are leading by a far margin than all players. $10.1 is still great value to own. He is also a good captain call if you don't want to captain Kane on gw25 & 27.

Aguero would win the battle in case you decide to captain him from gw25 to 27. Because I won't, so Firmino wins by better value. I will captain Salah or Sterling at gw25/27, and probably Pogba/Lingard at gw26

Mane vs MC mid, I will rank them by price, the cheaper is better. So I will say Sane > Sterling > Mane > KDB. If Silva gets back to play regularly, he beats all the above. I will not factor in the likes of Ox, because he will not pose similar threats as the above list.

I personally own Salah, Firmino, Sterling and Ota. Will look at Silva/Sane/Mane when I sell Son at gw25.

Anyone wanting to pay £2.5m more to get Aguero over Firmino needs to seriously ask themselves why.

It was staggering last week just how many made this swap.

Firmino in superb form, Aguero looks a yard off the pace.

I had to do it, league rival has Kane + Firmino

I had to do something to not have way too similar teams, agree that Firmino is way more value, but Kun might be a good call for those who are chasing

Might not pay off, but Kun hattrick vs Newcastle wouldn't surprise anyone

      got Kun, Son, Sterling& Salah.
Waiting to see how Kun goes against Newcastle - by then Sanchez future should be known & Jesus return date firmed up a bit. Has got a bit of history vs.Newcastle - his favourite PL opponents.
Sanchez goes to Utd then it will be Son & Kun to Firmino & Sanchez. Fancy Sanchez to explode if he gets his move and at under 3% ownership could be a great differential.

      I have Otamendi+Sterling+Salah (having sold Coutinho/Gomez to Lingard/Alonso) mid-week.

Both teams will continue to score and it will be a matter of value.

My differential was Hazard, but he has forsaken me. In the circumstances, rathern than getting 37% owned Firmino, I am inclined to get 23% owned Agüero for Hazard and a hit.

I think Firmino is less likely to rise me up in rankings (currently 66k) and Agüero is more explosive. An Agüero hat-trick might happen any day (so might a blank) but a Firmino one is most unlikely (though he should do something every week).

Having said that... Firmino allows me Hazard to Arnautovic... Agüero allows me only good old RLC...

As I write, I seem to change my mind...

I have 3.3m itb and only own Otamendi...so I'm on a shopping spree this week and next!!
Need to get rid of Chicharito, Pogba & Erisken!
Not sure if it's worth a -8 to get three in but looking at the weekend's fixtures it may well be viable.
One of Mahrez/Maguire/Vardy also on my radar in addition to a City & Pool attacker. I like the way they have been performing and their upcoming fixtures are very good!

Already have Salah from gw 1 so he is not moving anytime soon and have had Sterling for a while as well.

Looking at a double up for both teams though with the Ox and Aguero.

With no other striker available and 4 great fixtures before the return of Jesus, I really think he is a must have. Ox might benefit from Coutinho leaving and at 5.6 he is a great enabler. Son to Ox allows me to upgrade Vert Morata to Alonso Aguero. Just have to hope Son isn't going to tear it up against Saints, however 1 away goal and 0 assists this season in away games for him, eases my mind

doubling up on both city and liverpool players seems to be essential now, they are the 2 teams home and away (spurs at home) that when they win they win BIG! having 1 of their forward players isn't enough... full stop.

Got Ota, Sterling and Salah. Keen to get in 2 of KDB, Aguero, Firmino, Mane, VVD. Probably VVD and one of KDB or Firmino. There are so many options in midfield, I'm struggling to choose between the value players or the more expensive and reliable options.

Aguero - There's too much value in midfield and too many other transfer and captain options. Keeping Kane in a double up means too much restructuring (takes about -16 hits to get him in this week) and that's before the transition to an Aguero-less team when Jesus is back. City are in such good shape that Aguero could be the top scorer over the next month but Kane and Firmino are in great form. A positive is that an Aguero-focussed WC team has a few good differentials and decent subs because of value in midfield.

Firmino - Allows a stronger defence than Aguero (a priority for me). Probably only 1 hit (for Rooney) although I want Alonso so I might have to wait a week and miss a great fixture (getting both in this week means 12 point hit this week). Rotation remains an issue, Sturridge should be back soon. Many great midfield options with lower rotation risk. Only reason not to get Firm is alternatives in midfield.

I have Salah, Sterling and Aguero.

Only way to get Firmino would be to drop Aguero for a hit, and thats not happening before NEW and WBA.

And if I end up doing it, changing my mind, it’s not because of Aguero or Firmino, but because of Richarlison and Mahrez. Fed up with Richa, would love to have Mahrez.

But a -4 to get rid of Richarlison and Aguero for Mahrez and Firmino would be sheer madness, right?

Sanchez DGW last season TC 81pts. Good chance of Salah two easy home fixtures. Don't understand the rationale. Seems like a reckless gamble

KDB is not scoring as well as many cheaper mids especially at the price. Son 23pts more last 9 weeks. Not saying get Son but KDB bang for buck not good enough when value is premium

Was thinking of putting Stones in for Christensen, but is Danilo now a good option? Slightly cheaper which would help with a Depoitre upgrade down the line?

    What would you do?

    A) Morata > Aguero &
    Eriksen > Mahrez
    OR

    B)
    Morata > Firmino &
    Eriksen > Arno/Mahrez
    OR

    C) Morata > Aguero &
    Kabasele > Alonso
    Eriksen > 5.8 (-4)
