The ScoutCast quintet take on established Fantasy thinking in this latest episode, as we debate the quest to smash the current template squad.

What is the template? How can we break it? Should we even bother?

The discussion that unfolds is predictably sprawling and often heated, as once again the conflicting philosophies on Fantasy management in the ScoutCast crew are laid bare.

Elsewhere we let the rest of your community questions steer the conversation, as we contemplate Sanchez at United, battle Firmino vs Aguero and even find time to check in on Stoke.

Try as we might, even we struggle to argue about Stoke.

By the way, off the air we carried on the debate and, in the end, everyone agreed that I was right and that I also had the best beard.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday evening. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

If you’re a traditional type, you can acquire the mp3 audio version via this link on the first player below, or take in the full visual experience via the second player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Really surprised with the emerging consensus that Aguero is a really solid captain pick this week while captaining Sterling risky.

Did some digging and in the PL matches where they have both played at least 45 mins (13 games), Sterling has scored more highly in 8, Aguero in 4 and they have the same score in 1.

City’s style this season seems to be favouring the wide players, not to mention Sterling’s extra point per goal and potential clean sheet point.

Surely the evidence is that Sterling is the safe captain pick for City with Aguero the risky differential option?

Often people are more likely to captain a striker than a midfielder. I know I’ve been there before, it just feels right to captain the guy leading the line. Despite the evidence to the contrary.

Not saying this is exactly why, but might go a way to explaining the poll.

Thats the thing this season with so many players. Kane could have run riot, but has blanked 12 times, Hazard when playing up front could of done well and didn't, Aguero often getting out scored by the mids at man city. I think personally you've made the right move. I think Chelsea will struggle.

      1. Cok3y5murf
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 6 months ago

Well you make it sound like anything less than a hattrick is unacceptable from a captain. A midfielder gets more points for each goal. Sterling's got 6 double figure hauls this season and is the second most consistent player after Salah. Is that not enough? Aguero has blanked often.

        1. SADIO SANÉ
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 6 months ago

no, I make it sound like Aguero has a higher points ceiling - I don't deny that Sterling is the safer/more consistent option based on this season.

Aguero is lower owned though and a huge haul could see a nice rank rise, assuming the others don't score as well. An Aguero haul wouldn't be a huge suprise - he is the shortest price to score first, anytime, brace, hat-trick etc. this week.

Lingaard > Mahrez is the standard move this week, yeah?

However, I’d rather lose Lingaard with those blanks ahead, a few dodgy games and the arrival - I assume - of Sanchez

Just before Christmas I was top 2K and made the same fatal error Jay made. Took out Kane and what followed was a rank plummeting to as low as 20K at one stage and now back at 11K.

As a result I think it will be very difficult to claw my way back to that tok 1K goal I have, especially with a solid template team settled for most managers in the top 10K. So my strategy for the new year will be to follow the template so I don't fall back and try to earn extra points each week by way of selecting cheap players with low ownership as differentials.

Last week, my Jordon Ibe pick worked out!

and this week my punt is: Shinji Okazaki.

I really do think that the key right now is to not go overboard with selecting different players than the template. Not owning Salah or Kane or Alonso right now has the potential to hurt rankings much more than it would do any good.

But trying to be flexible with my formation, I can allow myself to switch from 433 to 343 to 352 all depending on those cheap differentials I bring in.

So I have what I call a core in my squad(In Bold letters), that will play week in week out. And a set of cheap options I can rotate and transfer as I see fit:

    DDG
    ALONSO, Jones, Vvd, Stones, Duffy
    SALAH, STERLING, Lingard, Ibe, Milivojevic
    KANE, AGUERO, Okazaki

(1.0 itb to allow for my weekly punts)

Would be nice to hear what strategies the rest on here have to break into that 1K bracket!

I have taken a punt on Mahrez and Wilson to outscore Firmino and Lingard to break the template. I've been hovering 10k-20k for months.

I disagree with this. I believe there is too much focus on DGW's. It is quite easy to shift around a few players for a double, without having to look too far ahead. My focus right now, as it has been all year is the next 5-6 weeks and having a good balance of players with good fixtures(Generally cheap players from lower teams) and in form players (Big hitters)

2K to 20K is big though. That top 10K is a whole different game to the rest once you're in it. If I had kept Kane, I would have probably captained him against Southampton. Thats about 60 points missed in 2 games where he scored the hattricks. I was at that stage only 11 points off the top 1000.....

Good idea, I'm doing something similar. Do you think taking a hit is off limits until the end of the season? Earlier in the season I took hits with wanton abandon and always plummeted, even if I had a good week.

Quite a few rotational players. I would probably bold Lingard and Jones. Surprised you haven't gone with Arnie?

I'm a West Ham fan so probably slightly biased but punting on their backline might not be a bad shout. Masuaku (4.5) playing wide left and Cresswell (5.1) still hitting assists. That being said, West Ham hit three back to back clean sheets before going the next five without a single clean sheet. Maybe it's turning point again?

Not to mention Leicester's backline? Recent back to back clean sheets showing a backline getting stronger, albeit they faced a lacklustre Chelsea and Huddersfield and with their injuries allows a cheap backline option that might work out as a good differential?

Howe really has become a parody of himself in pressers. Everyone is always "tough and go", does my head in.

Am I right in saying, had you your WC active, Pickford would be most peoples number 1?

What am I missing? Everton are awful at the back and their fixtures aren't exactly great.
    Looking at Ederson myself

I think if you add to this the return of Keane and Coleman (both back in training). This will bolster Everton's previously relatively solid defence.

-They have fantastic fixtures bar Arsenal away in a few GWs.
-Everton have some of the best defensive stats in the league.
-Pickford is a proven save and bap monster.
      -4.9. Differential.
-Might want to triple up on City soon and Ederson very rarely gets bonus/saves.

Everton really don't have some of the best defensive stats in the league. Their Expg against vs Top 6 teams under Allardyce has been atrocious. Regularly 3/4+. Conceded 8 in the last 3. Not worth getting on board now imo.

Exactly. And they play 3 of the top 6 from now until the end of the season, 2 at home..

Nothing about their defensive tact the last few games would convince me to invest. They're all over the place.

I agree about the triple City thing, but I don't think their fixtures are as great as they seem; Leicester, Arsenal, Palace, Watford in a row. All teams that have a high chance of scoring.

I bought DDG on my last WC and have no intention of letting him go now, he's a beast.

Have Adrian and think to have Court or Pickford on WC. But still not sure.

    Alonso, Jones, Ota,
    Richarlison, Lingard, Salah, Sterling,
    Kane, Aguero, Wilson

0FT. Anything worth taking a hit for?

At this rate I'm going to hit the deadline with a car-crash combination of Kelly, Bardsley and Chilwell in my backline.

Really struggling to accommodate all the big names 🙁

Does anyone have a rotation guide/link etc for the second half of the season? I see there was one for the first 20-odd weeks but can't see one from here onwards....I'm trying to decide which budget defensive combinations to plump for ahead of any wildcard moves....any shouts much appreciated.
