Tottenham Hotspur finally ended their long hunt for a new manager after appointing Nuno Espírito Santo as head coach.

Arriving on a two-year deal, the ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers boss replaces José Mourinho and brings in Ian Cathro (assistant head-coach), Rui Barbosa (goalkeeping coach) and Antonio Dias (fitness coach) as part of a backroom staff reshuffle.

In an interview with the club’s official website, the new managing director Fabio Paratici explained the reasons behind the decision to appoint the 47-year-old:

“First of all, we appointed Nuno because we have to be logical in our choice, so we needed a coach who respects our key points that we have in our minds. Our key points for this season would be to come back to discipline, to work physically hard, to develop our players, our young players and Nuno is very good in this job.

He did a fantastic job at Wolverhampton in the last four years, developed a lot of young players and we have to remember players like Pedro Neto, Diogo Jota, Adama Traoré and Raúl Jiménez, attacking players who were not so famous before coming to Wolverhampton.

Also, he adapted a lot of players for his system. Before Wolverhampton, he was in Porto and played another system, 4-4-2, and in Valencia he played 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1, so he has this kind of open mind about different systems and players, which is one of the reasons that we chose him.”

It’s a decision that has not gone down especially well with the club’s fanbase, but can Nuno’s appointment help galvanise Spurs, and what are the implications for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions in this Moving Target report.

THE HISTORY

Born in São Tomé in Portugal, Nuno was a goalkeeper during his playing career and was part of the Porto squad that won the 2002/03 UEFA Cup and 2003/04 UEFA Champions League under Mourinho.

After retiring in the summer of 2010, he worked in backroom roles at Málaga CF and Panathinaikos, before being named as manager of Portuguese side Rio Ave in 2012. In his second season in charge, they were finalists in both domestic cup competitions and qualified for the UEFA Europa League for the first time in their history.

In 2014, Nuno moved to Valencia where he delivered a fourth-place finish and qualified for the UEFA Champions League. He then spent a season at Porto before moving to England and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

His first season at Molineux was a real triumph as he led the club to promotion and the Championship title. He then guided Wolves to a seventh-place Premier League finish in the 2018/19 season, and repeated the feat in 2019/20 while also reaching the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League.

Despite a solid start to 2020/21, last season was a forgettable one for Wolves. Injuries, a lack of squad depth and fatigue meant that they were unable to find any real consistency, and as a result Nuno left the club by mutual consent in May.

NUNO ESPIRITO SANTO’S PREMIER LEAGUE RECORD:

Games114
Won43

Win rate38%

Given the underlying data, last season’s 13th place finish felt about right.

While the defence did perhaps look a little less assured than in previous seasons, they ranked mid-table in most of the key defensive metrics:

Goals conceded5212th
Shots conceded44210th

I think I might start with Martinez if they win Copa America.

186 points for 5.5 is still good value and don't see anyone else who can reach that level

Fine for 2nd half of the season, too expensive for 1st half.

Can cover his CSs with Targett if required.

Pretty certain Meslier for one more or less matched or even outperformed him in the second half of the season.

Villa might kick on again this season of course but then again so might Leeds. There's a fairly strong pattern of most promoted teams improving defensively second time out - SHU an outlier here.

Not expecting 186 to be repeated.

Aha - but the big thing you are forgetting - Meslier didn’t save 3 penalties in a penalty shootout against Colombia in an international game last night

You’re forgetting how incredibly important recency bias is to informing a typical FFS opinion

    Hi all

A league for anyone to join who has been playing the game since 2006 or before. I'm in my 19th year of playing the FPL version, but they only started keeping records of your final positions 2006 onwards.

So if you've been playing the game for 15 years or more then join the league (50 veterans plus). But remember you must be showing 2006 on your history.

    https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/auto-join/hz9bz2

I will donate £50 to the ultimate winner's choice of charity.

    Thanks

        Thanks you.

Tbh, I don’t prioritize ML. It’s all about finishing as high as possible in Overall rank. Also I don’t really believe in the chasing or leading theory, I feel I should just captain who will get points whether chasing or not.

I’m now leaning towards Shaw/Sterling as differentials who could get points because most will captain Kane & I can’t see him getting more than 6 pts unlike Shaw/Sterling.

    Kane, Rashford, Immobile
    Sterling, Insigne, Barella
    Bonucci, Shaw, Stones, Maguire
    Pickford

    Subs: Donna, Locatelli, Chiesa, White

What do you think as a Final squad if England get through?

Not sure whether to play Chiesa or Barella.

That's one way to look at it. The other is that you get a reliable Liverpool starter for 5 mil. Henderson more likely to score attacking points than Hojberg isnt he?

Sure he's nailed. I'd consider Meslier after Brighton's easyish opening run has ended.

      1. Sgt Frank Drebin
        • 9 Years
        5 years, 1 day ago

To be honest, I think I'm gonna keep the goalkeeper for the most of the season, unless a great opportunity arises. From what I learned, goalkeepers' points aren't very predictable and also do not depend so much on the fixtures.

        1. Andy_Social
          • 13 Years
          5 years, 1 day ago

Er, not really. If you'd have started with Brighton's keeper last season (and many did), you'd have been smart to jump off pretty smartish. Same with the keeper at Sheffield United who was expected to have a decent season. But it's true you don't want to chop-and-change keepers as much as outfield players. But by the time Brighton's opening run has ended it ought to be clear which budget keepers look like they'll be value.

          1. Sgt Frank Drebin
            • 9 Years
            5 years, 1 day ago

Right, if Brighton is gonna start terribly then I'm probably gonna swap Sanchez for someone else on the wildcard, but if he does ok, I'm probably gonna keep him even after the nice run of fixtures. I'm also basing my opinion on the mathematically safe FPL. From what I remember, fixture difficulty only played a role for the goalkeepers of the top6 clubs, as cheap goalkeepers got more points for saves in tough games, which kinda evened the lower chances for clean sheet.

    2. Sgt Frank Drebin
      • 9 Years

      100%*.
Also, thoughts on Doherty? If he's nailed, then he can be another player offering excellent value. For 5m he would be a no brainer.

Solid. I'm starting to like the look of Mahrez for the start of the season. Never been a huge fan of the 3-5-2 though.

I really like the look of Mahrez. He's enjoyed a nice holiday in Mykonos will have a full pre season and ended last season as first choice RW for Pep.

I'm not too worried about the formation as long as I'm happy with the players.

Five active midfielders is very viable with this season's prices. As others say, the only outlier to a solid squad is Mahrez, and it is looking odds-on that he'll start GW1 at the very least. Probably sound as a short-term punt, but I'm planning longer-term myself albeit I'll probably WC before a month is out.

I agree Mahrez does imbalance the squad a little bit but the other options I'm seeing mentioned here like Jota & Grealish are also rotation risks for the first few weeks. Maybe Havertz? But do I start the season with not sure.

            If not Mahrez it's a 343 template with DCL/Antonio I guess.

No, Mahrez is as good if not better than the alternatives. The risk is if he doesn't play, you've only got Ayling v Man United on your bench.

I agree. But I'd very suprised to see anyone else other than Mahrez playing RW start of the season for City.

Most of their players haven't had a full break and have been playing Euro knockouts.

Yeah I think a prefer a 352 with an explosive mid instead of the template 343.

pep roulette can hit you anytime, so the bench should be able to cope with that.
just 1 option there leaves you a bit exposed - you could easily draft in Welbeck(or Pukki) in place of Sarr and have a playing 4.5 option

I don't think we'll be able to ignore City attackers for long. Pep roulette hits every season but still we buy their attackers for their high ceilings.

I also like Mahrez for the first few weeks think he'll be nailed without CL. One of the few players to have a full rest this summer and was pretty much first choice last season

100% agree - not only that Mahrez is a as good a placeholder as any which can be turned into Havertz or Jota or Grealish without any team disruption. The issue is your bench: pre-season may well provide the answers but as it stands you have only 1 playing option. my point was not about Mahrez it was that Welbeck & Pukki are as good options as Sarr & Harrison for the same money and a 2nd bench option comes for free.

I will definitely have a look at Welbeck/Pukki pre season. Anyways I'm not overly confident about Sarr.

Forres has broken through to give him full competition on the right, with Foden and Sterling competing on the left - and that's without Grealish! It was sobering for me to see who City's highest-scoring midfielder was last season - Jack Harrison! No, I might start with Mahrez, but I'll try to go without a Peptated Cityzen for the bulk of the season if I can.

One thing I like about Mahrez he's a great placeholder for a Havertz/Mount or Grealish at Villa around GW3/4.

I'll also be trying to without a City attacker once CL kicks in.

      I like it..
I’m on Mount, Foden and Harrison instead of Mahrez,Raphinia and Sarr.
      Would like Mahrez though.

Mount & Foden definitely won't be available for GW1 imo. 3 week break after the Final.

          Back to Mahrez then.
I’ll have Harrison or Fofana covering any City rotation.
Mahrez v Norwich could be gold.

Who to captain, 8 pts behind in ML. differentials:

Me: Mount, Maehle, Damsgaard v Them: Sterling, Shaw

Both own Kane, he may go Kane. Shall i copy and try make up the deficit in the final? I might go all out on Italy with 8. Decisions!

8 points is nothing, I wouldn't over think it and just captain who you think will get the most points.

      Mount(c) is a good differential.

With Sterling & Shaw in his team there's a decent chance you fall further behind this week. Not easy to close a 10 point gap in this format.

captain Kane. if not you will probably fall further behind.

      B as I don't like Foden pick.

It was meant to be his breakout season with Silva gone and despite an injury free season, he couldn't get 50% of mins available. I like him a lot as a player but he'll most likely be used for CL which is not what we want in fpl.

I’d agree with you though. Has to be Kane unless you fancy Denmark to do a number.
