While the short-term uncertainty over fixtures leaves us unable to do much Fantasy Premier League (FPL) planning with any great conviction, our editorial content will slowly resume with some less Gameweek-focused articles.

Here we look at what Graham Potter’s appointment as Chelsea manager means for FPL managers, and which players could potentially thrive under their new boss.

Chelsea announced the appointment of Potter as their new head coach on Thursday, following the departure of Thomas Tuchel.

The 47-year-old led Brighton and Hove Albion to their highest-ever top-flight finish in 2021/22 and left the Seagulls in fourth in the Premier League table.

As things stand, Potter’s first match in charge is set to be the UEFA Champions League clash against RB Salzburg on Wednesday.

THE HISTORY

Having come through the ranks at Birmingham City, Graham Potter went on to represent 12 different clubs across a 13-year playing career, including Stoke City, Southampton and West Bromwich Albion.

A few years after retiring, he began his coaching journey in Sweden with Ostersund’s, leading them from the fourth division to the top-flight, as well as winning the Swedish Cup and reaching the knock-out stages of the UEFA Europa League. The latter feat was especially impressive, given that they progressed from a group that included Athletic Bilbao and Hertha Berlin.

“When I started, we got attendances of 500 – now we’re playing in front of 30,000 at Hammarby and beating Gothenburg, who have competed in the Champions League before. It’s some difference to where we were a few years ago.” – Graham Potter

In 2018, Potter took over at Swansea City following their relegation from the Premier League. Although he could only guide them to a 10th-place finish in the Championship, his time in Wales was largely deemed a success, as he rebuilt a new, youthful side who hit their stride in the second half of the campaign. They also reached the FA Cup quarter-finals, where they suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

That was enough to earn a move to Brighton in 2019, who had recently dismissed Chris Hughton. However, it took a while to implement his ideas and philosophy, with 15th and 16th place finishes in his first two seasons at the club. Still, the owners kept faith and were rewarded in 2021/22, when Brighton finished ninth, the club’s highest-ever Premier League finish.

2022/23 began with a first-ever win at Old Trafford, while last week’s 5-2 win over Leicester City lifted Brighton to fourth, which is even more impressive given that they sold two of their best players – Marc Cucurella (£5.2m) and Yves Bissouma (£4.8m) – in the summer.

PLAYING STYLE

“We were in front of the best English manager right now. As a spectator, I like to watch these teams. I like watching Brighton play. I recognise it. When I was a football player, I would love to play in this team.” – Pep Guardiola on Graham Potter’s Brighton

At Brighton, Graham Potter would regularly change systems, shifting from back four to back three formations depending on the opponent. However, since the backend of last season, he has favoured a possession-based and fluid 3-4-2-1 (see below), which is a similar shape to Tuchel’s Chelsea.

He likes to use players who are comfortable in a number of different positions, like Pascal Gross (£6.0m), Alexis Mac Allister (£5.6m), Solly March (£5.0m) and Leandro Trossard (£6.5m).

Indeed, the latter was signed as a winger, but also played as a number 10, a false nine, a central midfielder and more recently as a hybrid wing-back/inside forward, a position he thrived in.

Of course, that doesn’t mean Potter will stick with a 3-4-2-1 at Chelsea, but regardless of the formation, the fundamentals remain the same – defend as a team, focus on shape, build from the back, press a lot and commit players forward.

“He’s a players’ manager. He’s a problem solver. Tactically, he’s incredible at making sure when you step onto the pitch, everyone knows what they’re doing. What he’ll bring to Chelsea is exactly that. He’s a very calm person, and if he wants you to do something on the pitch, he takes responsibility if it goes wrong. He’s never there to throw anybody under the bus.” – Former Swansea City winger Nathan Dyer

THE PROSPECTS

 1

At this stage, we can only speculate about how Graham Potter will set up his team. However, we will get to see Chelsea in action prior to the next FPL deadline, when they face RB Salzburg in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

The fixtures, meanwhile, are very good from Gameweeks 9 to 12.

Chelsea’s defence has really struggled under Tuchel this season, but it’s an area that Potter should be able to fix, given his impressive record at Brighton in the past two seasons (see below).

Indeed, the Seagulls have allowed just five goals in their six league games in 2022/23, and two they have conceded were own-goals. By contrast, Chelsea have already conceded on nine occasions.

After -4 6/7playing which which would probably go with as many will in same position - actually if there are only a few games on un week 8 do FPL Towers not have a bit of a problem- many managers will just give up at that point so they may have to give everyone a FH to keep interest in their game

Hello All, completely off topic, but im new to this site and finding it quite useful. The only thing i find hard work is these forums. I find it hard to find latest threads, find answers to my posts, just hard work in general tbh. Is this just me ? or is there others that have same issues

Welcome! The way this site works is basically that new articles are posted and all the comments go to each new one (the newest article is always at the top of the page so it's easy to find). Unfortunately there isn't an actual forum for keeping certain discussions going or dividing things up so this is what we have. You can see your latest comments in your profile (think it goes up to the last month), but when you post there should be a small tick box which says "notify me of replies", which should give you emails every time you receive a reply to a comment, whether it's one you've made like this, or one you make in response to another comment. Might need to check your settings to ensure you have emails for replies on though.

Good of you to take time to reply to the new guy but he says he's having issues finding answers to his posts. You might want to c and p this answer as a new post, telling him to click on the "show replies" box.

Appreciate your time in getting back to me. but i walked out the room and come back and it showed up as no one responded to this question. So i went to profile and loaded up comments to find your response. I seem to have to do this every time. Surely they have a better system than this. You would of thought the forums would be the heartbeat of any site like this. The email response is a very slow process

Are you on phone, PC, I-Pad etc? Using autoresfresh? Different browsers. Is it any better toggling to desktop view on your phone. I think ultimately that's there's way too many articles running simultaneously at times. Not today though. I usually go to top of latest comments to try and see latest posts. At the end of the day we can post even if we're not members. You're paying though so query FFS, might get some help from them.

James would be out too, but Pereira would be playing. You'd be in the same boat as me, you'd have 5 available and then your FT for next week. If it happens I think I'll just take a hit and field 7, could use FH but not sure it's worth it

Atleast 1 thing is for sure. The template will well and truly break if the London fixtures are off.. most would WC/take hits to load their teams with
Newcastle, Man city , Man utd and mitro + fodder in their starting 11 and just 3 from chelsea, Liverpool , arsenal on their bench.

Chelsea/pool/arsenal/Tottenham/Brighton/Toney will become huge differentials come GW9 (albeit with poor fixtures and questionable form)

FWIW my honest opinion why the football bodies called it off over say rugby and football came down to the lack of trust on behaviour of the fans. I think the pitch invasions, abuse of silences and anthems, general nastiness back in grounds which you very rarely get in rugby and cricket for example spooked them. Minorities of course but more significant ones in footbal which has become a greater outlet to vent frustrations in due to its tribalism.

In fairness West Ham for example showed what could have been possible with their respect on Thursday and my opinion is even the likes of Liverpool with previous in this area would have sang YNWA etc and outnumbered any discontent. We’ll never know and we may be in a different mood zone next weekend

It's part of the game though.. ie forces you into a decision: Play WC and concentrate on short term players, or play free hit, or take hits, or take the low scoring gameweek on the chin and be happy with just 6 to 7 standout players. I've used my WC back in GW 3 and il probably have just 7 players playing IF Brighton is called off. But Id still vote for no extra free hit.

If this FH for everyone rumor does end up playing out literally everyone would have a team of

        Pope
        Trippier Cancelo Dalot
        Kdb Rashford Bruno MGW
        Haaland(c) Mitro Isak

Maybe 1 or 2 players swapped like mgw for Andreas etc. So basically it's as bad as getting 0 points since everyone will get the exact same points lol. I really hope they don't do this lol

So I have a normal, simple question. If you act like you "care", why did you delete comments on Thursday when you break your on statement?

It’s certainly been heavily moderated this week. Some of which has been OTT, lots of inoffensive posts removed because they didn’t fit a royalist view.

        to
Mitro + Tripper + Pope + 1M or 0.1M (depending on which Forward)

In 11 man draft FPL, Rodrigo available in pool. Trade in for Trossard given lack of matches to Oct? Won't get him back but maybe that's ok given manager change

Other mids are Saka Mount Paqueta Sisinterra

Considering you can get Pope, James and Cancelo for Iversen, Emerson and Justin just by sacrificing Kane for Toney or Son for Martinelli I'd say that is totally crazy. Double Leicester defense and starting ward every week + a Emerson who won't start when chilwell is fit in a 4-4-2 just to own Kane and Son is a bit insane 🙂

Dignitaries and world leaders will probably start to arrive on Thurs or Fri. Also, living in America post 9/11, we/all of us now have to consider an individual or group looking to "make a statement" at any large gathering. That requires an extra presence from law enforcement, who then won't be available for gw8 matches

Did we most of the popular entertainment programs suspended filming and there was no sport to watch on the box. This weekend there is so much sport you can't watch it all (F1, Test Cricket, PGA Golf, NFL), and the The Voice, Casualty, Who Want to be a Millionaire, The Masked singer etc are going to be broadcast this evening.

True. I have Sky and BT on Now TV and sport continues. But likes of BBC and Channel 4 has thrown parts of the schedule askew to cover the Monarchy. Even RTÉ and Virgin Media here in Ireland giving it lots of coverage. And it's right that she is remembered but not everyone was a fan.

Price changes remaining live in an inactive game is stupid. Mitrovic rising tonight for example.

Wildcarders this week/last week will have up to 3 weeks to gain from price rises potentially.

I brought in Mitrovic on Thursday morning before this news first broke but luckily seems Fulham will be one of the games that should be OK. Trippier's recent rises and tonight are a pain though but not much you can do, I probably shouldn't have gotten rid for James a few weeks back but said I'd get back on WC, although now looks like I will delay WC and he'll probably be at 5.5 by then!

Trippier has been threatening to.. but hasn't actually risen since Saturday I believe. Just 0.1 isn't that bad. Infact price rises and falls have been pretty slow this week

James likely to be more expensive when Potter organises the defence and the clean sheets start rolling in. Keeping the double up now

You've plenty of cash to buy them. But what if the next GW is postponed or either is injured before it you could use your transfers better elsewhere.

Why injured? There are no games and the training sessions are also cancelled. Mitro and Trips have best fixtures in the next 5-6 and beyond even if next gw is posponed. I mean it will be a 0.4 gain for me. I am doing it today before the price changes. No point waiting. But thanks anyway
