While the short-term uncertainty over fixtures leaves us unable to do much Fantasy Premier League (FPL) planning with any great conviction, our editorial content will slowly resume with some less Gameweek-focused articles.

Here we look at what Graham Potter’s appointment as Chelsea manager means for FPL managers, and which players could potentially thrive under their new boss.

Chelsea announced the appointment of Potter as their new head coach on Thursday, following the departure of Thomas Tuchel.

The 47-year-old led Brighton and Hove Albion to their highest-ever top-flight finish in 2021/22 and left the Seagulls in fourth in the Premier League table.

As things stand, Potter’s first match in charge is set to be the UEFA Champions League clash against RB Salzburg on Wednesday.

THE HISTORY

Having come through the ranks at Birmingham City, Graham Potter went on to represent 12 different clubs across a 13-year playing career, including Stoke City, Southampton and West Bromwich Albion.

A few years after retiring, he began his coaching journey in Sweden with Ostersund’s, leading them from the fourth division to the top-flight, as well as winning the Swedish Cup and reaching the knock-out stages of the UEFA Europa League. The latter feat was especially impressive, given that they progressed from a group that included Athletic Bilbao and Hertha Berlin.

“When I started, we got attendances of 500 – now we’re playing in front of 30,000 at Hammarby and beating Gothenburg, who have competed in the Champions League before. It’s some difference to where we were a few years ago.” – Graham Potter

In 2018, Potter took over at Swansea City following their relegation from the Premier League. Although he could only guide them to a 10th-place finish in the Championship, his time in Wales was largely deemed a success, as he rebuilt a new, youthful side who hit their stride in the second half of the campaign. They also reached the FA Cup quarter-finals, where they suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

That was enough to earn a move to Brighton in 2019, who had recently dismissed Chris Hughton. However, it took a while to implement his ideas and philosophy, with 15th and 16th place finishes in his first two seasons at the club. Still, the owners kept faith and were rewarded in 2021/22, when Brighton finished ninth, the club’s highest-ever Premier League finish.

2022/23 began with a first-ever win at Old Trafford, while last week’s 5-2 win over Leicester City lifted Brighton to fourth, which is even more impressive given that they sold two of their best players – Marc Cucurella (£5.2m) and Yves Bissouma (£4.8m) – in the summer.

PLAYING STYLE

“We were in front of the best English manager right now. As a spectator, I like to watch these teams. I like watching Brighton play. I recognise it. When I was a football player, I would love to play in this team.” – Pep Guardiola on Graham Potter’s Brighton

At Brighton, Graham Potter would regularly change systems, shifting from back four to back three formations depending on the opponent. However, since the backend of last season, he has favoured a possession-based and fluid 3-4-2-1 (see below), which is a similar shape to Tuchel’s Chelsea.

He likes to use players who are comfortable in a number of different positions, like Pascal Gross (£6.0m), Alexis Mac Allister (£5.6m), Solly March (£5.0m) and Leandro Trossard (£6.5m).

Indeed, the latter was signed as a winger, but also played as a number 10, a false nine, a central midfielder and more recently as a hybrid wing-back/inside forward, a position he thrived in.

Of course, that doesn’t mean Potter will stick with a 3-4-2-1 at Chelsea, but regardless of the formation, the fundamentals remain the same – defend as a team, focus on shape, build from the back, press a lot and commit players forward.

“He’s a players’ manager. He’s a problem solver. Tactically, he’s incredible at making sure when you step onto the pitch, everyone knows what they’re doing. What he’ll bring to Chelsea is exactly that. He’s a very calm person, and if he wants you to do something on the pitch, he takes responsibility if it goes wrong. He’s never there to throw anybody under the bus.” – Former Swansea City winger Nathan Dyer

THE PROSPECTS

 1

At this stage, we can only speculate about how Graham Potter will set up his team. However, we will get to see Chelsea in action prior to the next FPL deadline, when they face RB Salzburg in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

The fixtures, meanwhile, are very good from Gameweeks 9 to 12.

Chelsea’s defence has really struggled under Tuchel this season, but it’s an area that Potter should be able to fix, given his impressive record at Brighton in the past two seasons (see below).

Indeed, the Seagulls have allowed just five goals in their six league games in 2022/23, and two they have conceded were own-goals. By contrast, Chelsea have already conceded on nine occasions.

Premier League declined to comment on whether all fixtures will go ahead weekend before funeral. Resourcing issues, particularly policing will need to be discussed and resolved on a fixture by fixture basis

honestly FPL need to give out an extra FH if only 5 fixtures or so go ahead, otherwise the chaos just makes people lose interest in the game

If you lose interest, you lose interest. The game will go on. Giving a FH so that we all have the same 11 is ludicrous. If you want, you already have a FH so use it

Policing the funeral shouldn't clash with policing Premier League games because the funeral is scheduled for Monday 19th, and there aren't any games then.

London will need all the police resources it can for the arrival of leaders and others from around the world arriving over the weekend. It will be a massive influx of people coming into London the like of which we probably have not seen before

London will need all the police resources it can, sure, but those forces who aren't required to police a game in week 8 (because their local team is scheduled to play away) are free to be deployed. Plus police officers from regions which have games on Saturday (like the West Midlands and Yorkshire for example) can be deployed on Sunday in order to support the police who are already there.

don't know, if we don't get an extra FH i'll need to use mine for sure as i'll have 9 players out when i include Zaha & Trossard with their game already cancelled, as i'm not using a WC that won't have any Arsenal, Spurs, Pool or Chelsea players among others as that probably means hits galore in a couple of weeks to bring some back in

  4. The Philosopher

Only if this GW had gone ahead, even cancelling next GW altogether could've been manageable. Now in a season where fixtures are already climbing and there's a mid season world cup, and having to arrange these two GWs, premier league will be shooting themselves in the foot if the next GW is cancelled as well.

The Football Supporters' Association (FSA), which is the representative body for soccer fans in England and Wales, said the cancellation of games was a missed opportunity for fans to pay their respect.

"We believe football is at its finest when bringing people together at times of huge national significance -- be those moments of joy or moments of mourning," the FSA said.

Former England internationals Peter Crouch and Gary Neville echoed the group's sentiments.
"Black armbands, silences observed, national anthem, Royal band playing etc to the millions around the world watching? Isn't that a better send-off," Crouch said.

Neville added: "Sport can demonstrate better than most the respect the Queen deserves."

Kinda wondering if I should stick my head above this particular parapet. This is just my opinion based on historical observations and my thoughts / observations on society and changes in cultural ideology in this great country of ours. I got involved in a discussion a day or so ago with Bankst on the Monarchy and mentioned the sentiment that is held by a great many Liverpudlians. I guess you can read my comments and either agree or disagree but I will not reply to posters who have no idea how to civilly discuss my thoughts and observations as my mental health is not sufficiently strong to get involved in such nonsense.
Please, read my post and reply in the manner with which I posted them, with dignity and respect. 🙂

I think it’s unfair to assume Liverpudlians are any more anti monarchy than any other set of supporters around the country. Most Liverpool fans that can attend matches do not come from Liverpool. Fact. So any booing of the national anthem is just part of the cult that is Liverpool FC and not representative of the city itself.

I’m not so sure. I think working class cities like Liverpool and Manchester are probably more anti monarchist than some posh town in the cotswolds. The establishment caused a lot of anger to many places that had coal mines/docks and then you got the disgraceful Hillsborough cover up by thatchers government. Some will say the monarchy is a neutral in such matters but they still represent the peak of aristocracy/ establishment

      wol-man c /3 city from maybe 5
      new-bourn 3 toon
      eve-whu gordon/bowen

Whom would you rather have for the next five gameweeks
    A. Salah, Jesus
    B. Kane, Maddison
    C. Son, Mitrovic

Do you have Martinelli, Saka or Odegaard in your team? I love Jesus and he will do well but i think the strongest front 3 currently is ... Kane Haaland Mitrovic. So Dropping Jesus to Mitrovic is a good move considering Arsenals fixtures are turning and fulhams are good!

You can't trust that site at all, I would make the moves.

So after playing my wildcard at the start of the last game week, before the circumstances leading to this game week being cancelled - I'm 0.1 short of having this team … I've got Toney and Rashford in my team at the moment, if either rise 0.1 again before next game week then I'll be able to afford...

    Ederson
    Cancelo, James, Trippier
    Martinelli, Sterling, ASM, Bowen
    Kane, Haaland, Mitrovic.

    (Iversen, Dalot, Andreas, N.Williams)

Anything obvious I'm missing or good to go pending no further interruptions to game weeks obviously? I realise Bowen is a risk, but Ham have decent fixtures and he's more of a place holder for Zaha when palace's fixtures turn very soon to be completely honest. Cheers.

He's not nailed yet, but I'm sure he will be before long. West Ham are unlikely to bench their £50m record signing too often. He came on as a sub on Thurday, along with Bowen and Antonio, and helped change the game. He looked great with incisive passing at times, but also looked a a bit rusty and gave the ball away at others. His work rate is much higher than I was expecting, which while not an obvious FPL asset, will endear him to Moyes

Thanks for your reply, I understand the angle you're coming from and my thought process is that I'm pretty sure in the next 4/5 Game weeks i'll want TAA back and Cancelo - TAA is nice whilst still holding Ederson to cover my city defence long term. I do agree not sure Ederson is value for money when he doesn't get many save points but I'm trying to cover myself. love Pope though

Anyone any idea when the watchlist will actually get updated? Says last so 02.09.2022. The paid for members area is not much better as far as I can see as the 6 G.W. projections run from GW 2 to GW 8, pretty poor in my opinion :(.

Yes has deffo gone down hill the last few years. The number of online articles and content has decreased in favour of podcasts and the likes. I wouldn't mind if it was free but i have loyally paid my membership for many years! On the plus side there are now many other "Patreon" sites that are possibly better value. So this may well be my last as a full member and likely to stay that way unless the site gets its cat back together and starts to remember who pays their wages perhaps.

Geriatric - we've actually been religiously updating the Watchlist before every single Gameweek this season and it would have got a refresh again on Thu/Fri had GW7 not fallen by the wayside. For now, we can't really update it as we don't know the players we're identifying as medium-term targets. Is GW8 happening at all? Will the London teams suffer postponements and the others go ahead? Will Brighton v Palace still be off? Once we get those questions answered (hopefully v soon now we know the funeral date), the Watchlist will get a swift refresh.

As for the Members Area, that's a different thing altogether... it's a source of frustration to me, too. I wish I could defend it but I can't really: the six-GW projections are up to date in the 'old' Members Area (https://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/projections/) but not the 'new' one, which is admittedly still beta. But subscribers shouldn't be having to flit between one and the other to find the latest projected scores or other features, and I'm sorry that you and others have to. The only thing I can promise is that I'll keep hounding others for more time/money to be spent on the tech side of things, as I'm as desperate for improvements as anyone else and can do little myself being a purely editorial bod. I've reported that projections bug in the meantime. Apologies again.

While the Members Area isn't perfect, I find the articles written by Tom and Neale to be insightful and well written. I also find the Team News section and the members only videos with Mark and Andy very helpful. For this reason, I'm more than happy to pay my membership and support the site.

Thanks for the response Skonto. I am not saying all is bad, far from it, there are some very insightful articles produced including from your good self.
However, I am not sure I can follow your explanation re the above watchlist. There are players who will be actively trying to improve and plan their Teams during this unfortunate hiatus. I can understand wanting to have as much info as possible available but even with the limited info we have now are you really telling me that James and TAA should be topping the watchlist? That Mee and possibly Walker should even be on it and Trippier down below Gabriel and Perisic?
Re the members area. I seem to now automatically be directed to the Betta site. I would much rather have the old site as default with accurate info than a "pretty" site with out of date and duff info :(. Perhaps the Betta should be removed until it is fit for purpose?
I also think the site owners/management need to have a long hard look at themselves about how things are currently being run and progressed. Just sad how things have gone downhill the last few years. 🙁 🙁

Question - I was on WC straight after GW6 concluded and it has rolled into GW8. All good. But my ML rivals can now see my WC team as when the deadline hit, with a week to go. That feels really wrong. Or am I getting this wrong?

All of my players have risen, with players removed due to drops. It has really exposed my strategy, a week early due to the postponement, and now allows them to WC or use transfers to counter. I’m not sure that’s ok.

Won't they just be playing their own game and trying to gain as many points as possible rather than trying to copy or counter your moves? Especially at this stage of the season. Maybe I'm too naive

Perhaps I’m too old school. The WC is, for me, the most powerful chip we have in FPL. I’m using it make wholesale changes and move away from the template. They’ve now seen my team, including differentials, without a ball being kicked.

I get that, I'm just not sure that your rivals knowing your moves will result in them copying them. Maybe to block you late in the season if you are trailing, but otherwise think you're worrying over nothing, it's far too early for such tactics

What would you have changed? If the wildcard got cancelled then you wouldn't have had the price rises, and you have a 2nd week of wildcard to catch further rises. Can't have it all

Well if all the fixtures had gone ahead in gw7, your rivals would have seen your team in any case and reacted accordingly (if that's what their way of playing the game). Only difference is a round of fixtures got cancelled

Assuming gw 8 goes ahead, I need a defender and midfielder or forward to bring in. I only need these players for gw 8 as I'll be wilcarding after. Which teams should I target for defender and offensive players? Team below...starred players can possibly be taken out. I have 2 fts and 2M itb. I don't mind taking a 4 pt hit.

    Team:
    Ward (iverson)
    TAA Robbo* Trippier James (white)
    Salah Gross* Martenelli Andreas (dasilva)
    Haaland Jesus (mbeumo*)

I plan to do iverson to Pope. I would transfer out Gross OR mbeumo.
