Preparation for the newly launched Fantasy EFL game requires a basic understanding of its unique set-up.

Over 39 Gameweeks that last from Thursday to Wednesday, there’s a hybrid format that requires new weekly selections of seven players to do well and two clubs to win.

By checking bookmakers’ odds for the Championship, League One and League Two, you get a vibe for which players might regularly return and can also plan when to back certain clubs – none can be backed more than five times.

As Fantasy Football Scout is teaming up with the English Football League, let’s get an early viewpoint on who will challenge for promotion and fight against relegation.

CHAMPIONSHIP

TO BE CHAMPIONSTO BE RELEGATED
Leeds United7/2Oxford United3/2
Burnley8/1Plymouth Argyle9/4
Luton Town10/1Millwall4/1
Middlesbrough14/1Derby County4/1
Coventry City16/1Preston North End4/1
Sheffield United16/1Cardiff City9/2
Norwich City16/1Watford5/1
West Bromwich Albion16/1Bristol City5/1

After last season’s top four contained all three relegated sides from the Premier League, it’s no surprise to see Burnley, Luton and Sheffield United heavily backed to immediately recuperate.

The team ahead of all these is play-off finalists Leeds. However, they’ve already cashed in on young prodigy Archie Gray and these odds may begin to drift should Crysencio Summerville also depart. If he stays, Fantasy ownership will frequently be high, based on his 19 goals and nine assists.

At the opposite end, Oxford have short odds for going straight back down to League One, with Plymouth predicted to be in trouble having only survived on the final day of last season.

Of the promoted trio, champions Portsmouth are the sole outfit not amongst relegation favourites.

LEAGUE ONE

TO BE CHAMPIONSTO BE RELEGATED
Birmingham City3/1Crawley Town4/6
Bolton Wanderers10/1Shrewsbury Town11/8
Rotherham United10/1Northampton Town6/4
Wrexham11/1Cambridge United13/8
Huddersfield Town12/1Stevenage5/2
Peterborough United12/1Burton Albion5/2
Barnsley16/1Exeter City5/2
Charlton Athletic16/1Mansfield Town11/4

Meanwhile, Birmingham are about to start their first campaign outside of the top two tiers for 30 years. Their odds of quickly amending this are 3/1, with similarly demoted Huddersfield and Rotherham expected to have strong seasons.

Play-off pain occurred for Bolton Wanderers against Oxford but they are 10/1 to grab first place. Additionally, the Hollywood presence at Wrexham has brought successive promotions – could they be the first team in the English league pyramid to achieve three in a row?

Crawley were promoted alongside the Red Dragons but are odds-on to instantaneously drop to League Two.

LEAGUE TWO

TO BE CHAMPIONSTO BE RELEGATED
Chesterfield13/2Morecambe11/4
Gillingham8/1Bromley10/3
Milton Keynes Dons8/1Harrogate Town4/1
Doncaster Rovers10/1Newport County11/2
Carlisle United12/1Accrington Stanley11/2
Bradford City14/1Grimsby Town7/1
Notts County14/1Swindon Town8/1
Salford City14/1Colchester United9/1

In the fourth tier, Chesterfield are back after six National League seasons. Like Wrexham, bookmakers think they’re in a good position for consecutive promotions. Will Grigg leads their line.

Of the four relegated sides, Carlisle seem to be in the best recovery position.

FPL Marc Broadcaster, writer and overthinker. Hoping that ‘differential potential’ will catch on.

Do you think TAA is worth starting with? Still uncertain as to where and how he will be playing, inverted etc.

My initial interest cooled a bit with Slot's apparent emphasis on a more controlled build-up and the implications that this might curb Trent's tendency for those long diagonal through balls. And I think a CS GW1 is far from certain. But it does seem like maybe Slot might tighten them up a bit and those home games should have pretty decent CS odds. Still want to see a bit more of how Slot uses him but at the moment he's a maybe / probably not (since I've also stripped most of the funds from my defence in more recent drafts)

If Slot wants to tighten them up where does that leave Trent as he can’t defend!?

Thanks, so is Robertson worth a shout?

My current defence is: Gvardiol / Munoz / Livramento / Barco / Faes

In two minds if I should go even cheaper and spend more in attack!

    A) Salah, Konsa, Eze & Solanke
    or
    B) Saka, Pedro Porro, Son & Wood

Was on A to get Salah in as also Haaland-less...

      I prefer A.

However could you downweight Solanke to Wood, freeing up money for maybe Eza > Odegaard or Konsa > Porro if you prefer

    Morning all,

    Any thoughts on this draft:

    Sanchez
    Gvardiol / Munoz / Konsa
    Salah / Rashford / Nkunku / Hudson-odoi
    Haaland / Havertz / Isak

    4.0 / Bobb / Harwood-Bellis / 4.0

    1. The Knights Template
      • 12 Years
      2 years, 1 month ago

Chelsea defence rubbish, Sanchez a poor option facing the prospect of receiving a new, second, fundament in GW1. Munoz is a 5.0m Palace asset, Livramento at Newcastle should be better. Rashford might be an interesting punt. Nkunku untested, wait and see, hopefully a gem. Havertz pushed back to mid? Who knows. Downgrade to a cheaper forward and get one of the 9.5-ish mids if possible.

      Good luck!

    Isak/Joao Pedro/4.5

    Riddles:

    Week 2: FH

Cheers M, think that might be my play then, undecided on BB until we know who is fit.

+ Week 4 is a good week to wildcard, especially with the first intl break. Villa etc.
+ Not difficult to put a decent week 1 team that also does well in gw3 (whether or not with BB in gw1). Ars etc.
+ Allows me to really go after week 2 on FH including City against Ipswich with back-up to cope for no-shows
+ 4 weeks of data probably best to start seeing trends but acting on them quickly enough to get an advantage

        - Chips all gone obviously
        - Team value up until gw3 deadline could take a battering

An interesting stat on Havertz (transfermarkt)
15 returns as CF in 13 games
5 returns as AM in 24 games.

Will he play CF a lot this season?

Aye, there's the rub. Lot of Jesus noise at the moment. And can't rule out an early tactical surprise from Arteta again, possibly stemming from the availability of Calafiori/Timber at LB, leading to a different left 8...
I'm hovering between Havertz/Muniz at the moment for this reason but will see what happens in the next friendlies

Arsenal are in the market for a striker. They are rumored to have identified 3 targets, all with high price tags. The unknown at this point is will Edu pay the premium prices being asked?

The run we went on from January - May is the best football we’ve played in well over a decade and Havertz was the guy playing up front.

I think we’ll start with him there and continue from where we left off

My team has taken a 180.

    It's a bit bizarre.

    But I quite like it...

    Raya
    Trent. Burn. Barco.
    Saka. Palmer. Johnson(spurs). Rogers
    Haaland. Wood. Isak

    4m. Andreas. HB. Faes.

Opinions (but please none of this downgrade Trent and bulk up mids type chat. I'm set like this to kinda cover all bases)

Guess it’s what having Haaland does to your team, especially if you’re trying to fit Trent in too.

I can't explain why but it feels like you haven't spent all your money, guess the price rises for the 3 big hitters does it. Really don't like the 3x 4.0 defenders or the Rogers & Andreas together picks. Do you have anything in the bank with this draft?

Maybe Andreas to Amad and upgrade a 4.0 to a 4.5?

I'd probably downgrade Raya to a 4.5 to also maybe get Johnson to Gordon and then Saka to Son to keep Spurs attack.

Elanga played more minutes last year

As a Forest fan I've been following our preseason closely (usual caveats about getting away by preseason).

CHO has seemingly come back looking as sharp and strong as he ended last season. Elanga may yet show up again but he didn't really rediscover his groove after a mid-season injury and was a bit in and out of the team after that.

Going forward, I'd probably say CHO is more likely to start matches than Elanga, although both could easily do so as our formation and starting XI is very unclear. IF we go with a back 4, you'd expect Wood, CHO, MGW and 2 of [Sangare/ Danillo/ Yates/ Anderson/ Dominguez] to fill 5 of the remaining 6 slots, but the 6th slot could be Elanga or any of the remaining 3, depending on our formation and opposition. Elanga potentially a good weapon off the bench.

Yours is a fair comment and it is something to watch in the final few preseason games, but it won't disrupt your draft plans if you decided to swap them just before the GW1 deadline. Personally, I'm probably going CHO.

Is Wood even first choice when everyone is fit?

I'm working on the basis that Awoniyi will not be fit to start the season but you are quite right that Wood will not automatically start if they are both fit and well. I was going to put Wood/ Awoniyi in the longer answer above but the question was about CHO v Elanga, so wanted to keep it simple. Since you asked, if Awoniyi gets reasonable minutes and looks sharp in the last preseason game I would very much expect them to share game time in the league, but the IF is a big one...

CHO pushed Elanga to the other side, making Elanga less of a threat going forward.

I think it depends on their importance, Palmer for example will definitely start vs Man City

Yeah I expect him to play.
But last year we didn’t expect to see gabriel being benched either.
Now with timber, calafiori joining arsenal, it’s a bit tricky

Thankyou mate!! Great info!! I’ve been on the Salah with no Haaland team to for the majority of drafts, can pretty much get the perfect team for me if I go Havertz instead of Watkins too , so close tho. So many decent options

B for now, pending a better look at Slot's Pool. Didn't really like the look of C drafts initially but if Foden is back late and Chelsea are looking rubbish, then maybe I try to sneak in some sort of Salah & Bobb combo for the first few weeks

Totally. Haaland at his current price just ruins my whole team. I really feel his points can be gained elsewhere with those extra funds spread around. All my drafts look so much better without him.

But not sure I'd go there unless MU get a Casemiro replacement. If the midfield is Casemiro-Mainoo-Bruno/Mount like last season, don't expect many CSs.. Casemiro has lost his legs.

I think Onana's 2nd season, plus Yoro will be a nice boost, agree with the hole left by Casemiro - that needs addressing

Like Shaw for his attacking potential, but can't assume he's fit so went elsewhere

I'm currently leaning towards no Arsenal def. Best defence last season but I'm not sure who is the likely nailed starter at the moment

Yeah I agree. Raya is the only one who is nailed I believe though but going for a 4.5m GK gives me a much balanced squad
