From The Physio

From the Physio – Sergio Aguero

Sergio Aguero’s calf injury in the 6-3 win over Arsenal has served up a potential major setback for thousands of Fantasy managers. With Manuel Pellegrini offering us little insight into the severity of the injury and a scan imminent, we can only wait on news from the Etihad. However, resident Fantasy Football Scout physio, Facer, has made a timely return to offer his early view. Analysing the incident involved and Aguero’s reaction and movement, here’s Facer’s detailed report and his take on the likely prognosis.

The incident occurred barely a minute into the second half and gives a clear indication of the mechanism of injury. Playing a one-two with David Silva, Sergio Aguero receives the ball and with one touch plays it back into the path of Silva. Almost immediately Aguero starts to limp and, several seconds later, in an attempt to take the pressure from the injury, falls on to his back. At first glance the incident looked fairly innocuous, but with closer inspection, we see that the former Atletico man didn’t quite have the time to position himself correctly and improvises a one-touch pass into Silva’s run with a subtly excessive rotation at the right hip. This is significant because the contracting Gluteal muscles produce a rotatory force at the hip and, with the studs of Aguero’s right boot planted firmly in the ground, severely restricting movement at the hip and ankles, this force had nowhere to go, resulting in a tear to one of the calf muscles.

As Aguero is lying on the ground his demeanour is interesting. He does not appear to be in a great deal of pain and he is not reaching for the injury. In terms of severity, these are positive signs. Suffering a severe calf strain is like being shot in the back of the leg and Aguero would have hit the ground immediately and would need to have been stretchered off. We then see the Argentine hobble from the field. It is worth noting that, although exhibiting severely restricted movement at the right ankle, Aguero is able to partially weight bear on the injured limb, giving us a further clue as to the severity and likely duration of any absence. Similarly, as Aguero is led from the field, we can observe him palpating the back of his calf towards the ‘belly’ of the Gastrocnemius, suggesting a tear to the meat of the muscle rather than attachments, which heals more quickly. In summary, I would suggest that Aguero has suffered a grade 1-2 calf strain, which would see him sidelined for a minimum of 10 days, but more likely 2-3 weeks. Sadly for his owners, that would see Aguero miss at least the next three league outings.

A Scout Disclaimer: While Facer offers an expert’s view of such injuries, with just a remote assessment to go on, the opinions expressed here should not be taken as fact or acted on with any degree of certainty.

      Pick two -

Walcott can offer the same points potential as Ozil ........ at a considerable discount.

Ramsey even at his current price still offers tremendous value.

    Hi all,
Simple question for the Aguero swap:

    A) Rooney + Mirallas (or other 8.0 or less mid)

    B) Negredo and Yaya

A - fixtures are great in next 4/5 games
B - City score goals, yaya on penalties

    What's your take? Thanks.

  7. More Aguero replacement options
    The Sarjeant
    • 10 Years

With Sergio Aguero highly likely to be out for numerous weeks, many of us are looking for the ideal candidate to replace the Argentine with. Here's my choices on who to replace him with, even if some of them are a bit obvious.

Luis Suarez is the stand out option here after scoring two more goals against Tottenham, taking his FPL total up to 16 goals after playing under 1000 minutes. Most fantasy football managers will have already picked up the Liverpool forward many weeks ago. But if you already have his talent in your squad, then the search continues.

There's talk amongst the community of doing a straight swap to fellow Man City forward, Alvaro Negredo. The Spaniard is quite capable of scoring goals, after notching 25 goals in the league last season for former club Sevilla and 7 for his new side so far this season. At a price of £9.3m he's a perfect fit for those who want reassurance capitalising on Man City's goal scoring form.
There's also talk of two other strong contenders in Wayne Rooney and Romelu Lukaku. Their respective clubs have favourable fixtures for the next five gameweeks at a minimum. Both of these players are currently on form, having each scored 3 goals in their past five games and 8 goals overall in the league. Whilst Rooney has assisted double the amount of goals Lukaku has, Lukaku may be the better pick here, as £2.5m is the difference between the two. These extra funds may be needed in the coming weeks as the likes of Silva and Walcott are back from injury and starting to be amongst the goals yet again.

Those four players mentioned, Suarez, Negredo, Rooney and Lukaku, are the clear stand out choices. But there are some other players who have been on good form recently, which have slipped under the radar for some, and others who have the fixtures to support them pick up some decent returns.

Olivier Giroud is a man who isn't on form at all, after neither scoring or assisting a single goal in the past four gameweeks, having played three matches. This may be due to the French mans lack of rest, after playing 2,139 minutes out of a possible 2,700 in all competitions for club and country this season. But, the Gunners fixtures after entertaining Chelsea at the Emirates this coming weekend become increasingly attractive. The five fixtures after the Chelsea game are; whm / new / CAR / avl / FUL. Don't let these three away fixtures put you off investing, as Arsenal have scored the joint highest goals away from home with Liverpool and Man United - 17, with Giroud only scoring 3 of these out of his 7 league goals. Managers who invest in the Arsenal forward could be rewarded with decent returns in those five matches, if he finds his form once again.

The two main forwards who could be a fruitful replacement to Aguero, who are much more of a differential compared to the other players mentioned so far, are Dimitar Berbatov and Gary Hooper.

Dimitar Berbatov didn't start his campaign off successfully under Martin Jol, after only managing to find the next once in the 11 games that he started. Under Martin Jol the forward managed 14 shots, with 12 of these coming from inside the box. But with Fulham's acquisition of new manager Rene Meulensteen, Berbatov has had 12 shots in total, with 11 of these inside the box, which has resulted in 2 goals. This has come in just 3 matches. Dimitar Berbatov could be a golden buy for anyone investing in the forward over the next five fixtures, for only a mere £7m. Fulham's next five fixtures are MCI / nor / hul / WHM / SUN.

Former Celtic striker Gary Hooper has flown completely under the radar, and I'm very surprised his name hasn't been mentioned more across the community. The Norwich front man has scored 4 goals in the past 6 matches for the Canaries, after only playing 22 minutes in one of those matches. Since Hooper found his goal scoring feet in gameweek 11, only Aguero and Suarez have a better 'minutes per goal,' out of any player who has played at least 360 minutes across the 6 gameweeks. If his form was to continue, then the downgrade to the £6.1m player would result in a lot of freed up funds to invest else where in your team.

These two players are my differential picks, who could help managers climb the rankings going into the new year. Berbatov has an ownership of 3.2% and Hooper is owned by only 0.8%.

    Other notable on form players who have all scored at least 2 goals in the past 5 matches are;

    Chamakh - 3 goals.
    Gouffran - 3 goals.
    Rodriguez - 3 goals.
    Long - 2 goals.
    Osvaldo - 2 goals.

As was mentioned earlier by Demba, I don't think Rooney's position today will be permanent and he was on my wqatchlist before today anyway.

Rooney is the best replacement for Aguero instead of Negredo:
    # PPG reason
    # Man City have many other option from midfield for your squad, while MU don't have
    # Budget reason ==> easier to get back Aguero with similar price
    # More popular ==> potential for price rise is higher
    # Rooney could survive without RVP; Negredo doesn't have proof to survive without Aguero

        For me it's the opposite

        1) Rooney is playing DMC last night, seeing MU playing well that way he may kept the role at least for the short term

        2) Rooney is making the play for United which means someone else will be getting the end of it

        3) MU is inconsistent

        4) Negredo is now hold the 'sole' responsibility of scoring for City, although we know the midfield are more than capabale to do so as well

        5) That being said, Negredo will be the focal point of City's attack, as compared to when Aguero is in

        6) Negredo is being supplied by Nasri, Silva and Navas + Zabaleta's cross which can only do good for him

        7) Fixtures wise are very similar, so no difference there

        8) Talks of Negredo being not nailed on is rubbished since Jovetic is just returned from long injury and Dzeko is out of favour. He will start AT LEAST the 5 of the next 6 league games, I reckon he will start all of them as he is fit.

        9) Less popular, good differential.

Negredo is being bought at a rapid rate. One other factor you could argue is because of the quality of Citys midfield more chances will be created for their front men, actually they already have proved this beyond any doubt, and against some of the top sides. Utd as you have said are limited in the mid area, even Rooney being asked to do a shift there today, which may continue to lead to inconsistant service to their forward line.

    Anyone?

Worth a hit (-4) to bring in Distin for Baker?

I can play Ward at home to toon. I wont be able to afford distin if he price rises.

I can get distin later with two trades after downgrading Ravel.

    Have coleman

i agree, not worth it. Distin will probably still be 5.2 when the WC becomes available.

So now all of the ex-Aguero owners will more than likely be Suarez owners by next GW. Interesting if Suarez draws a blank. Those without, who have a player that performed well as captain and a consistent team will shake up the rankings.. Always the problem with a player with such a high ownership percentage, I suppose. I wonder if anyone who owns Suarez is brave enough to give the captain's armband to someone else..?

umm how many aguero owners are/were there that didn't own suarez?

looking at his point returns I think it'd be madness not to own the Uruguayan

ok so just did Aguero to Negredo just before the drop using my 1 FT..

is Terry + Januzaj -> Chester + Walcott for -8 a kneejerk? would leave me with 1.5. or should I hold until a price change forces my hand?

    thanks late-night crew

Do you really feel you must do all these transfers this week - could you split it over two GW's ?

you should read the whole thing later when you can but i'll just quote a short bit for you

"In summary, I would suggest that Aguero has suffered a grade 1-2 calf strain, which would see him sidelined for a minimum of 10 days, but more likely 2-3 weeks. Sadly for his owners, that would see Aguero miss at least the next three league outings."

just read it all..I think he's out for at least the next 2 matches for sure, good enough reason for me to ship him..can't hold on to someone that costs that much and lose out on the price changes/points from that spot

I did Aguero to Rooney. This year perhaps more than before, I find myself trying to stay ahead of price jumps/decreases. Not sure if it's the best tactic, but to some degree, I think it's almost a necessary evil.

You just have to do it with your intentions well thought out. I think this was. How can you not love Rooney's fixtures?

Season after season, I agree less with this. There are no shortages at any position of talent value. There are moneyball moves to make all the time.

I do agree, though, that having a budget to throw around does make the decisions easier, and the options more appealing. Sometimes budget can make a better team, but not always.

That said, I also sold Aguero for Rooney. I'm no zen master, but with Rooney's fixtures, I don't see it as a great gamble.
