Scout Scribbles – Di Maria Dominates in Dusseldorf

Angel di Maria grabs a goal and a trio of assists as Argentina avenge their World Cup Final defeat against Germany. Erik Lamela, Sergio Aguero and Andre Schurrle all find the net in a six-goal thriller, while Wayne Rooney slots home a spot-kick as England squeeze past Norway.

DI MARIA STEALS THE SHOW FOR ARGENTINA

Manchester United’s record signing Angel di Maria assisted three goals and bagged a fourth as his side ran out 4-2 winners against World Cup winners Germany in their own backyard last night. The former Real Madrid midfielder provided the crosses for Sergio Aguero, Erik Lamela and Federico Fernandez (newly of Swansea) to put the visitors 3-0 ahead, before adding a fourth for his side early in the second half with a dinked finish. Post-match, Argentina coach Gerardo Martino had high praise for his star man:

“Di Maria is one of the best four or five players in the world and so his performance didn’t surprise me.”

The Scout Says: Man United fans will have been purring at last night’s performance from Di Maria, who showed exactly why Louis Van Gaal’s out-of-form side broke the English club transfer fee record for the Argentine’s services. Fielded on the right wing in yesterday’s international friendly, the midfielder turned in a timely advertisement for his services to Fantasy managers, demonstrating his skill, vision, ability from set pieces and finishing in an all-round display of quality. Available for 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Di Maria looks an integral cog in Van Gaal’s fresh looking United side, though his positioning alongside Darren Fletcher in the centre of the park against Burnley last weekend somewhat dampened our enthusiasm. Nevertheless, it is far from certain that this will remain his chosen role, nor whether Van Gaal will even stick with his 3-4-1-2 formation, having failed to win single match so far this season, ensuring that Di Maria’s Fantasy potential still remains in the category of ‘wait and see’. One thing, however, is for sure – after Di Maria proved last night that he has the quality to tear apart a World Cup winning side, Harry Redknapp will be straight to the drawing board to figure out how his QPR team can cope with the £59.7million man in two Sundays’ time.

SWIFT IMPACT FROM AGUERO ONCE AGAIN

Sergio Aguero’s goal for Argentina came in just the 20th minute of last night’s match, and was the third time the striker has hit the back of the net within 25 minutes of taking to the field this season.

The Scout Says: Whilst last night’s goal further highlights the appeal of the Manchester City forward even in spite of his hefty 12.1 price tag, owners of Aguero will be mainly thankful that the injury-prone Argentine made it through the game unscathed. Having been eased into the campaign thus far by Manuel Pellegrini, a two week break would probably have been ideal for Aguero right now, though last night’s run out did actually turn out to be beneficial for the striker, who can now rest up ahead of his next league fixture. With tough fixtures against Arsenal and Chelsea up next for City, however, Aguero has his work cut out in demonstrating why he’s worth shelling out the substantial extra slice of budget over team-mate Stefan Jovetic, though his lively start to the season signals that he’s set to do just that.

FIRST INTERNATIONAL GOAL FOR LAMELA

Erik Lamela vindicated Martino’s decision to offer him the opportunity of a starting role by striking his first goal for the Albicelestes just before half time against the Germans.

The Scout Says: With Cristian Eriksen sitting on a disappointing seven points after Spurs’ three opening matches of the campaign, and Nacer Chadli still well and truly in the ‘differential’ category, Lamela strengthened his position as Tottenham’s midfield asset of choice last night with a sumptuously taken volley. Two assists against QPR in Gameweek 2 underlined his creative talents, and if he can also bring his finishing ability from last night into his league performances, the 8.0 priced Lamela could be set to plunder the points against Sunderland, West Brom and Southampton in the next four Gameweeks.

SCHURRLE OFFERS CONSOLATION FOR GERMANY

Andre Schurrle was one of the few members of the home side to leave the field with something to show for his efforts yesterday. The Chelsea midfielder continued his World Cup form by scoring one his side’s consolation goals against the South Americans.

The Scout Says: A goal against Burnley in Chelsea’s opening fixture of the season saw Schurrle race on to our radars, despite the German still recovering from his exertions in Brazil in the summer. However, the midfielder only lasted 63 minutes on the pitch the following week, and then watched on as an unused sub in his side’s 6-3 rout of Everton last weekend, and has subsequently fallen far in our estimations. Whilst the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard are available in FPL for 9.3 and 10.0 respectively, the 7.5 priced Schurrle could offer managers a budget route into Chelsea’s midfield should he convince Jose Mourinho that he is worthy of a regular starting role, and last night’s goal will certainly help his cause. With Swansea and Aston Villa visiting Stamford Bridge in the next three Gameweeks, and Eden Hazard and Oscar currently considered a doubts for next Saturday’s fixture for the Blues, Schurrle may indeed be offered further chances to regain the faith of Mourinho and Fantasy managers alike.

ROONEY NOTCHES FROM THE SPOT

Wayne Rooney’s first appearance as captain of England’s national side in their friendly against Norway proved a cheerful occasion. The Man United forward secured a 1-0 win for his side by slotting home a second half penalty after Raheem Sterling was brought down in the box.

The Scout Says: Last night’s goal will have given Rooney a real confidence boost after the striker failed to contribute in either of his last two appearances in a United shirt. The 10.5 priced man has already been sold by over 200,000 managers in FPL this week, with a straight swap to Old Trafford’s latest arrival Radamel Falcao the most popular route out, but Louis Van Gaal’s plans for his club captain are yet to be ascertained once he has a fully fit squad to choose from. A deeper role is seen as the most likely scenario, though it won’t be until United’s home clash with QPR until we are any the wiser.

FOSTER SUFFERS THUMB INJURY

Ben Foster withdrew from England’s squad yesterday just prior to their friendly victory, and will now be unavailable for his national side’s Euro 2016 Qualifier against Switzerland on Monday. West Brom have, however, stated that the thumb injury sustained by their first choice goalkeeper ‘is not a serious problem’.

The Scout Says: With testing encounters against Everton and Tottenham up next for West Brom, the Midlands outfit will be keen to have Foster fully fit and available between the sticks. The same applies for his 4% ownership in FPL, who will be hopeful that the Baggies can repeat the defensive performance that saw them pick up a clean sheet at Southampton two weeks ago if they are to pick up any returns from those fixtures. Nonetheless, with clashes against Liverpool and Man United then on the horizon for Alan Irvine’s side, and Foster now classified as a doubt, investment in any of the Baggies’ assets currently looks unadvisable.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    New tactic for 2014/15

Each year I try a new tactic that I hope will improve my overall rank by Gameweek 38. A couple of seasons ago I tried focusing on chasing bandwagons in the first few weeks to build up team value – it worked and I went from 4544 to 1569. Last season my new tactic was to take a few more hits, particularly around double gameweeks. Once again it worked as I went up to 840th.

My new tactic this year aims to be preserving my wildcard for the second half of the season. This will be the first time in seven years that I will have managed to last beyond Gameweek 9 if that happens.

So enough about my examples – what is your new tactic for this year to propel you up the ranks?

Avoid knee jerking, and save my WC for a DGW. Already failed at the first, only a matter of time before I fail at the second. D:

              Nvm, found it 🙂

You can play 2 wildcards a season. One wildcard can be played at any time. The January Wildcard can only be used after Gameweek 20 starts (1 Jan 11:30) until Gameweek 23 ends (7 Feb 11:30).

Wildcards are played on the transfers page but aren't active until you have confirmed the transfers.

      Be more aggressive with transfers.

It's arguably not the season to do this given the reduced volatility in the prices, but in prior years I've taken very few hits (probably 5 or 6 in total) and I've often missed out on big hauls due to being too cautious.

This season, I will be taking at least 1 hit per week (on average)

      1. JasonG123
        • 10 Years

That it too many hits imo. I think optimal amount of hits a season is about 6-10.

Agree...I went up to about 14 last season with my new carefree attitude to dgwks. That was very high I think. 38 hits will lead to a lower rank guaranteed.

Yep last year I took 14 too and I think it was too many, even though it helped massively jumping on Sturridge, Rambo and Yaya early with hits (that was more a bit of luck rather than good strategy). I think I'm going to try being a little more conservative this year.

Avoiding reading too much into the consensus of those on here that I don't recognise yet.

For example the Falcao popularity seems to be based on nothing other than he's a big name coming into the league. There's little consideration for time required for him to fit into a very different league, struggling team and climate which will seem alien to him. There's also the uncertainty of gametime as he beds in.
The fpl approach that usually proves most successful in using new players is to give them a week or two before committing (in this case at the cost of losing Costa or Naismith's form or Sturridge's fixtures), unlike the approach of those who are currently the loudest on here.

I'm basically trying to practice extreme patience and keep a lot of 2 FTs during the season. Never saved my WC beyond the first international break and took too many hits on silly moves last season. One of the perks is that I also won't have to stress over player prices as often (though that generally seems to be the case anyway this season).

      - Go for bandwagons the first GWs to gain TV
      - Doing transfer early in the week so I don't miss price rises / the player I'm going to sell drops. Making transfers early in the week also decreases the total time spent analyzing the upcoming GW.
      - After many GWs with too many points on the bench, I am going for a cheap bench and a more fixture proof first eleven. I.e. won't rotate mids and fwds.
      - Don't gamble too much on players that may not play (especially cheap defenders). Already lost 0,1 and a few points by gambling Bartley over Naylor :(. Rage!

I played my WC early last year and have done the same this week....the difference in tactic is that last year i did it to build up team value whereas this year ive done it in order to not lose team value with all the price decreases.

I'm curious, why do you think your tactics "worked" to take you up the ranks? There's a correlation/causation problem there, especially in a game as complex as this one.

I could just as easily argue that, e.g., taking more hits actually kept you from reaching the top 500, and you would be hard-pressed to make a statistical argument against me.

It's actually not that hard to tell. You just have to estimate if the sum of your hits where successful or not over the long term. If you ended up taking a lot of hits that ended up being short term solutions (i.e. had to be transferred out shortly after), they were most likely bad moves.

Last season I used my WC as early as GW2 and restrain myself to do transfer as late as possible until the deadline and keep 1 transfer per week. It worked; from 1241672th place (12/13) to 42561th place (13/14). I guess that would be my tactic again this year. In short, no new tactic for me.

My tactic this year is simple!! CHOOSE THE CORRECT CAPTAIN!! Spend a little time before each gameweek begins and analyse the stats, history of every game ensuring i pick the correct captain. Regardless of trying different tactics every season, I feel that choosing the correct captain every week is simply the most important decision of all. It could mean the difference between 4 points and 30 points which will prove a massive factor in your final position. Players worry so much about losing 4 points after taking a hit……failing to choose the correct captain could lose you 3/4 times that, every week!!

No infact I don't think they do hence my post!!!!! Not sure whether you understood or read my post but as I said I intend on spending a little more time than usual looking at the stats of every team and player, odds of the bookies, history etc! I doubt the majority of people spend enough time doing this every week and therefore fall into the trap of logging into scout, voting for their captain choice and picking whoever is top of the vote as their captain! Think everyone has done this at some point throughout the season although I'm sure you haven't! I'm sure you study every stat possible evey week before choosing your captain! What's your ID and we can have a look at your genius fantasy history!?

I would keep Rooney one more week and just do Mata+Jovetic to Sterling and Welbeck. Then Rooney to Falcao next week for free.

        Yeah, as above.
What are the thoughts of Welbeck here?
We have a hard run of fixtures coming up so I'm leaning towards Pelle.

Hope Danny hits the ground running though!!

No mention that it was a strong Argentina team but far from Germany's first choice XI. Some nice goals though, and lots of premiership involvement to pique our interest.

Dunno how Rooney will take confidence from his performance. Yes, it was a nicely taken penalty, but there wasn't much else from him. Sterling looks better every game though.

    Best move?

    A) Sanchez & Bony -> Sterling & Costa (4 points)

    B) Sanchez, Hazard & Jovetic -> Sterling, Di Maria/Fabregas & Costa (8 points)

      A) sterling is essential, bony has a poor fixture, Jovetic though won't start but he will play as they have 3 strikers. It doesnt feel good having hazard when the whole of fpl has fabs but it should be ok.

Really unsure about wildcarding or not atm, would love some opinions!

    Current team: (transfer used)
    Forster - Schmeichel
    Jones - Debuchy - Hutton - Colo - Manquilo
Sterling - Ramsey - Siggy - De Jong - Silva (would transfer out for -4 to fab)
    Costa - Rooney - Jutkiewiz (or w/e)

    Current WC team:
    Courtouis - Myhill
Moreno - Jones - Van Aanholdt - Colo - Hutton
Sterling - Di Maria - Siggy - Ramsey (might bechanging to fab if ramsey goes up to 9.2) - Ward Prowse
    Aguero - Costa - Jutkiewiz

I agree, Rooney could obviously score a lot of points, so could de jong.
Main reasons for wcing is that i want Fab, Di Maria, and Falcao / Aguero, tho Moreno is also tempting me.

So Dier - Fazio - Vertongen - Rose

Thought I saw Kaboul had the captaincy against Liverpool though, any chance he plays ahead of Fazio?

I don't know - I thought he's been pretty terrible at times in the last few games. He is in my team though (somehow) so here's to hoping!

You're right: Dier - Fazio - Vertonghen - Rose. Kaboul won't keep his place. Poor form.

I know you didnt ask me - but it seems good to go, unless Foster injury proves real. And I'd be itching to ditch Baines, as much as he signifies being an anti-casual.

    Which is the better gamble?

    A) Sanchez & Bony -> Sterling & Costa before the internationals have finished (most likely tonight). Risks being Sterling or Costa (or any of my other 13 players (excluding Sanchez and Bony) getting injured in their international).

    B) Do the above transfer after all the internationals involving my players have taken place, i.e. on Monday night. Risk being that Costa or Sterling rise, or Sanchez or Bony fall before then (as no room for price movements with the proposed transfers)

A for me, but I'm a early transfer sucker.

Sterling won't rise for a few days. Costa will rise (if he does) in about 3 days in my opinion. The NTI are slow for both of them

Yeah, I think Sterling will be fine, but Costa could rise before Monday, and Sanchez and Bony could also fall by then. Add in the uncertainty with fpl/fiso and I'm swaying towards A!

I made my transfers early. Can't trust price rises/falls.
Less chance of an injury than being done by a sneaky price increase

Double Game Weeks & Wild Cards

Just wanted to make a quick point on this. A few years ago I would ALWAYS save my wildcard for use in the double headers but my thinking has changed on this. Now I'm very much of the mentality that an early wildcard (weeks 3-5) is better because you can pick up the form players early and ride the wave.

Reason behind this is that as a rule of thumb, the DGW's tend to be dominated by the "bigger clubs" - and, put simply, they rotate to death at that stage of the season. Last year we had a double game weeks where say City had a really tough Saturday game (away to Everton) and then a very easy midweek one (home to Villa). This happened three times to City and each time they changed half their team!

If you're lucky enough to not have to use your wild card and are able to save it, clearly the late DGW remains a potent option. But if your team is struggling early, it's much more sensible to sort out the damage there and then rather than clinging to some false hope 30 game weeks down the line.

Early WC is bad this season because. The change in the price rises means you aren't making as much TV and there are so many players that have the potential to be great fantasy assets that haven't come to the surface yet. Far too many wagons with no substance at the moment.

the change in price is a factor - but the players scoring the most points is still the most crucial one.

Yeah, I got caught by this last year. Used WC for a DGW and all the players I brought in only played 1 of the 2 games. They scored OK so it wasn't a disaster but the DGW benefits were minimal.

Agreed! A WC should be used a a long term solution to maximize your score long term. If you early on have a lot of non-starter (bad gambles) and too many players that are out of form, an early WC will be a better long term solution. Value wise you will accumulate more value because of more remaining GWs, and points wise you can get the essential players early so you don't have to play catch up and do gambles. Fantasy is all about maximizing the long term score, not trynig to max your score every week!

In order to justify using the WC, I think you should do atleast 5 transfers. A -12hit isn't that bad if you look of the long term return vs the loss of not having those players long term. I'm off course talking about essential, long term that will stay in your team for a long time and play every GW. GW8 looks like a GW with a big shift concerning which teams have favourable fixtures, so I will probably do a lot of transfers that GW.

I would rather ditch fabregas. Ramsey is a bonus point magnet. He scores and can get assists. Fabregas gets assists but won't be a bps magnet because of chelsea defence and he just doesnt score many
