Scout Scribbles – Kompany Overcomes Calf Complaint

Vincent Kompany recovers from a calf problem to play the full 90 minutes for Belgium. Edin Dzeko and Loic Remy are amongst the goals for Bosnia and France, Marcos Rojo is in line for his United debut after finally receiving a work permit, while reports suggest Siem de Jong could be set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up a groin injury in training for Newcastle.

KOMPANY RECOVERY AIDS BELGIUM

City skipper Vincent Kompany recovered from a calf problem to play the full 90 minutes for Belgium last night in their straightforward 2-0 victory over Australia.

The Scout Says: Kompany’s owners will have rested a little easier last night after reports earlier in the week suggested the centre-back could be a doubt for his side’s showdown with Arsenal in eight days’ time. With new boy Eliaquim Mangala still struggling to reach full fitness, the Blues chances of shutting out the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey will surely depend on a solid showing from their captain in the heart of defence. Would-be suitors of the 6.5-valued Belgian should be wary though, as the match against Arsenal is followed by the visit of current table-toppers Chelsea to the Etihad in Gameweek 5. Beyond that, however, City face Hull, Aston Villa and West Ham in their next four, and clean sheets look on the menu for Kompany and co.

DZEKO ON TARGET IN BOSNIA WIN

Elsewhere for City, Edin Dzeko notched the 37th goal of his international career as Bosnia ran out 3-0 winners against Liechtenstein.

The Scout Says: With Sergio Aguero now fully fit for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, Dzeko is set to go head-to-head with Stevan Jovetic for the starting spot alongside the talismanic Argentine in the Blues’ attack. It was a contest that the 8.5-priced Dzeko lost out on last time out, only taking to the field for 28 minutes as a second-half substitute, and the Bosnian has subsequently been sold on by over 42,000 managers so far this week. However, City’s dismal display in their 1-0 loss to Stoke last weekend suggests Pellegrini will be tempted to make alterations for his side’s trip to Arsenal in Gameweek 4, and Dzeko and his remaining owners will be hopeful that the forward can return to the starting line-up and build on the momentum from last night’s goal-scoring display.

REMY FIRES FRANCE TO VICTORY

Chelsea’s latest recruit Loic Remy emerged from the substitutes bench for France last night to strike his side’s only goal in a 1-0 friendly win over Spain, whose starting line-up included Remy’s new teammates Cesc Fabregas, Cesar Azpilicueta and Diego Costa.

The Scout Says: Unfortunately for Remy’s 4.5% ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, the striker looks another name now added to the list of previously popular Fantasy options whose potential has been almost entirely eradicated after summer moves (think Rickie Lambert and Bacary Sagna). With Costa’s recent injury scare now long forgotten, the in-form Spaniard’s spot in Jose Mourinho’s starting XI looks almost untouchable, hence the chances of Remy getting anywhere near last season’s tally of 14 goals this time round appear minimal at best.

ROJO CLEARED FOR UNITED BOW

The controversy surrounding the work permit of Manchester United’s summer signing Marcus Rojo has finally been resolved, and the former Sporting Lisbon defender is now available to make his debut for the Old Trafford outfit when they face QPR in Gameweek 4.

The Scout Says: It’s not only at the attacking end of the pitch that Louis Van Gaal now has some personnel decisions to make. Rojo’s availability could see the 6.0-priced defender come straight into United’s starting line-up as a centre-back in two Sunday’s time, with youngster Tyler Blackett looking most likely to drop to the bench. On the other hand, Van Gaal might instead choose to utilise Rojo as a left wing back – anyone who followed this summer’s World Cup will have noticed the Argentinian’s effectiveness in driving up the flank, and his new manager may opt to tap into that potential. Either way, with Daley Blind’s potential seriously curtailed by his classification in FPL as a midfielder, and Luke Shaw still sidelined with a hamstring injury, Rojo may now emerge as United’s key defensive asset in the coming weeks as his side’s kind run of fixtures continues (QPR, lei, WHM, EVE, wba).

GROIN SCARE FOR DE JONG

Reports suggest that Newcastle’s summer signing Siem de Jong has suffered a groin tear in training and could face up to four months out of action. The Dutchman has only just made his comeback from a calf problem, but may now return to the injury list alongside teammate Jack Colback, who withdrew from England’s international squad with a calf knock at the start of the week.

The Scout Says: Expectations were high for De Jong following his acquisition from Ajax, but the midfielder is now beginning to adopt the unwelcome label of ‘injury prone’ (bear in mind he was injured five times for Ajax last season alone). Having only made one start so far this term after picking up a calf problem in pre-season, the 7.0-priced man’s campaign has really yet to get going, and if yesterday’s reports are correct, that could remain the case until Christmas time. Moussa Sissoko offers an option to replace de Jong in the ‘hole’, but with Colback also a doubt for the Magpies’ Gameweek 4 visit of Southampton, Sissoko may well continue in a midfield role, allowing Remy Cabella the chance to shift in behind the lone striker. This scenario could also see Pardew hand Rolando Aarons his first league start on the wing – the young midfielder has impressed in both of his substitute appearances this season, picking up a goal and assist against Crystal Palace last Saturday, and should the de Jong rumours be true, Aarons, at just 5.0, could prove a quality budget option for the next few months.

Next international break looks a good time to WC.
    1. New players would have settled in, can see who's playing and who's in form.
    2. Arsenal and Everton's fixtures take a turn and are significantly better. (Arsenal midfield double up maybe and Baines/Coleman).
    3. Price change sites might have figured out the calculation that FPL uses for price rises by then... Hopefully.

Going back to what Wakey was saying about templates.

The easiest way to put a cat amongst the pigeons without too dramatically altering the exisiting format and points scoring, would be to have a one player per Premier League club rule instead of the exisiting three.

    You have to choose:

e.g Hazard or Fab or Costa

    Sturridge or Sterling or Gerrard

    Dzeko Silva Yaya or Aguero

Rambo Walcott Giroud Sanchez or Welbeck

    etc...

Would be very interesting when you have to put your defence together with that restriction.

    Thoughts????

I like taking risks with certain teams as the season goes on, couple of seasons back I tripled on Stoke defenders which at the time was seen as madness but they wound up keeping something like 4 CSs over the 5 games I tripled up.

That feeling of taking the risk on something like that and having it pay off is huge for me really. (The triple up I still remember as one of my high points!)

The best way to do it would be to have a saner scoring system, rather than the runaway one we have now (where a player who scores well tends to score even better because of how bonus points are awarded, and then the captaincy rule compounds that, causing massive disparities from week to week).

For all the flak it (rightly) caught, the official World Cup game had a more interesting scoring system that, with some tweaks, makes decisions between players more interesting, and minileague races tighter.

Agreed and keep an eye on United. Falcao won't be the only one, they've not been impressive but over the next few weeks we're going to see them starting nearly an entirely new team, could be a few prospects emerging from there.

The template is based on form (past) but sometimes doesn't give due consideration to fixtures (future). Players like Kun, Ramsey and Fabregas should be met with suspicion, and so should new signings like Welbeck and Falcao.

Hutton is a bench player, leave him there until his fixtures improve. Rooney is captain and has great fixtures - give him another week. Dzeko will get minutes but you knew when you got him in that he wouldn't start every game. Ramsey is worth keeping all season if he doesn't get injured.
Just take another -4 next week if you aren't happy - wildcarding seems excessive when you already have so many of the players that everyone else is wildcarding in.

  17. A positive view on price changes
    Qubit

Its a human trait that most people don't like change. This year has seen a change to the FPL transfer system and how prices rise/fall. This seems to have resulted in a lot of discussion (mostly moaning if from what Ive seen!) However, my FPL mantra is adapt or die, and rather than view this negatively Im wondering if we can't look at it in a different light.

Basically, I have been wondering if the change in the transfer system and the apparent relative stability of players prices actually gives us a degree of freedom for player transfers that has been lacking in the most recent seasons?

For example, Ramsey is still 9.1 despite huge net transfers in. This makes me wonder if an opportunity is now available where I can get rid of him (if I believe he another player may score better) swap in another player and collect those points before swapping back (if I so choose). The likelihood being that if my proposed transfer does as well I suspect that I will easily be able to swap back when fixtures/form improve.

This way I maximise my points returns, rather than potentially having to either a) stick with a player because once I get rid Im unlikely to be able to afford to get him back b) gamble and hope for the best - still aware that im unlikely to be able to get him back.

Obviously I have no idea how the season will unfold, or if the folk at FISO or TotalFPL are close to nailing the thresholds, but even so I still think this could actually be a positive and we should always be looking for new ways to exploit the now seemingly yearly shift in FPL rules 😉 (kind of like F1)

Nice post. The change does seem to allow you to take a gamble and swap Ramsey out and in again at a later stage.
Previous seasons saw people in morbid fear of losing a player because of the value tied up.

Hopefully that fear will be lessened this season. Although I must admit ive exploited that in previous seasons, by jumping off whilst everyone else clings on! I think this could contribute towards a less rigid template and greater diversity in teams (hopefully)

Hmm is it even possible to work out the difference without hacking the website or something? Since everyone's transfers are hidden and NTI is meaningless (if true) for price rises...

Nope. Transfer in/out data is known, but the actual transfers and whether they were on WC is only known after the following deadline. The NTI threshold estimate that the price-sites use takes this into account - it's adjusted depending on the estimated no of wildcards. As you can tell, it's estimates on top of estimates, so on a week with a lot of wildcards there's liable to be more errors. It was the same last season, though - and they managed ok then.

Ah yeah OK I see. There is hope then! FPL would always use an algorithm wouldn't they? It would be impractical to just 'choose' the price changes based on a whim, right? I hope so anyway...

You're right, there is an opportunity here. We have been released from the template in my view because its now easier to sell the best players as we no longer have a ton of value tied up in them.

I agree. I prefer basing my transfers on whether or not I think a player will score well and not on whether or not I will lose/gain money.

I'm also a patient type of player so this system suits me - allows me time to assess a player over a GW or 2 before purchasing and not worrying about his price being 0.5 higher in the meantime.

I definitely prefer having a bit more time to analyse. This gwk for example Ive only made 1 transfer and have held back on my others for now. Whereas last year I might have been tempted to act over the break.

It would be easier though if we knew when price changes would happen. I'm still tempted by early transfers because I'm not sure when a player will rise and fall in price. Even though it isn't the 0.3 rise in a week that has been in the past, a probable 0.1 rise or fall can still cause one to kneejerk early.

Agreed, hopefully the sites predicting changes can get close enough for it to be useful whilst the changes to the system can still prevent those excesses.

Think my knee will always be slightly jerky where certain transfers are concerned! (even my 1 transfer this week was Mata to Sterling and I didnt want to sit on that one for long - old habits die hard!)

There is clearly now a big margin of error in the price change predictions on the totalFPL and FISO websites.

It would be helpful if they could quote a margin of error or range of percentages for each player. That appears to be very difficult at present when there are some players at over -200% who haven't fallen yet and others who did rise when they were only 85%, but FISO at least are gradually refining their estimates as further price changes do or don't occur.

I was literally just thinking this earlier. A margin or range would be most useful. In fact they may have now option if the WC factor continues to skew things.

The issue is not the "how" it is the "when".

Actually, I have seen moaning about both (although i wasn't really talking about the how). The timing is inconvenient (but we are not entitled to this information - it was never FPLs original intention that we are able to predict the timings of price rises).

However this is not the only issue with it , even if we knew this price rises would not be occurring at the rate of previous years, which those who place a high premium on TV seem less than happy about.

    11. SwissWavey
      • 10 Years

      I agree.
But I wonder if they could change it even more to further help more frequent selling of risers.

If we take last year's Suarez, he would have risen a huge amount in any year, whatever the rules, so selling him at any point - due to form or fixtures - with a view to buying him back later would have been almost impossible.

But, what if the percentage you lose changes depending on length of ownership? For example, if you've only owned him, say, a month then you lose 50% as normal. But, if you've owned him for 4 months maybe you only lose 10% of the rise - and some sliding scale in between.

I'm plucking numbers out of the air, and I haven't thought it through, but some encouragement for people to deviate from a widely perpetuated template has to be good for the game, doesn't it?

      1. Qubit
        • 14 Years
        9 years, 7 months ago

Definitely agree in principle with this. I wondered about something similar myself before - like an owners incentive scheme, perhaps not as high as 90% but perhaps between 33%-66% say. That way the game has additional element to it that becomes a balance between trading and points. ( Thing is im not sure FPL would go for this as they prefer to keep it simple! )

So rather than becoming some kind of mass herd migration to the latest bandwagon, mostly because the fear is so high of being left behind, it allows other options to be explored.

The more I think about it the more I applaud FPL for attempting to move the goalposts closer to how they used to be - such extravagant team values like 115m last year being easily achieved (without even trying) never used to be the case.

For what its worth i think that decent team values can still be achieved, and may even require/be increased by some of the more adventurous thinking regarding transfers that I referred to i my original post.

Looks very good, not to dissimilar to mine. I've not got Aguero (future injury worries) and splashed out in defence a little more.

Is Aaron's worth a punt at 5.0 or get Boyd and upgrade elsewhere?

Aarons will still be a rotation threat regardless of di jong injury.....saying that no idea how nailed on boyd is either but at least you're paying less. If you wann spend £5m I reckon JWP is your man.

Costa and Rooney here too. I did Bony -> Pelle, with a view to swapping to Welbeck come GW 8

But Pelle, who has been nothing impressive at all, isn't?

Naismith if you are between those two, early days so safest to go with the guys that know the league.

This will not happen. Eto'o can play the role Naismith does.

naismith would only lose his place upon Barkley's return, he's in form and plays CF/CAM so Eto won't take his place, I could see Lukaku losing minutes to him though

    Hi!

    Here is my current team:

    Krul(Mannone)
    Pieters, Lovren, Jones (Wisdom, Vlaar)
    Henderson, Ramsey, Silva, Fabregas (Siggy)
    Sturridge, Costa, Naismith

Have 1 FT and 0.0 in the bank.
So here is my question: do you think Silva will get me enough points or should I sell him? If so, who should I buy?

    Questions:

    a) Thoughts on keeping 1.1 itb from my WC team, saving a transfer during GW4 so then in GW5 I can do Moreno Naismith to Pieters Welbeck?

    b) Chance of Welbeck rising before this week as a % in your opinon?

Don't plan transfers . Choose a team for a couple of weeks and let things roll , you will always be forced in some different priority transfer ( which happens mostly ) .

Paul Scholes "Welbeck is never going to be a 20-25 goal a season man, but he will get Arsenal 10-15. "

He's right. but Arsenal don't need him to get 20-25 goals a season, Ramsey, Alexis, Theo and Pod can all chip in. The Welbeck signing was less about getting a goalscorer and more about getting someone who can lead the line in the absence of Giroud IMO

Welbeck has incredibly good link up play, especially on a counter attack. I think he's going to be great at getting players like Sanchez & Ramsey into scoring positions in the box.
