Team of the Season – Sergio Aguero

Sergio Aguero reaffirmed his status as the league’s most lethal forward this season, racking up 26 goals as City finished second behind champions Chelsea. The Golden Boot winner justified his weighty 12.0 price tag, delivering attacking returns in 22 of his 33 appearances, and serving up a personal best of 216 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

The Statistics

As has been the unfortunate reality throughout his City career, Aguero was Fantasy gold when fit and firing yet inevitably succumbed to injury at some stage. Despite clocking significantly more pitch time than in the previous two campaigns, the Argentina international still only graced the pitch for 2532 minutes – put that into perspective, Eden Hazard managed 3373 minutes in Chelsea’s title-winning campaign. Nonetheless, Aguero still finished second overall behind the Belgian’s 233 points and ended the season as City’s top scoring Fantasy assets, some 25 points ahead of David Silva.

Handed a sub role for the first two Gameweeks due to World Cup duties for Argentina, Aguero emerged from the bench to net in cameos against Newcastle United and Liverpool. The South American preserved that momentum right through to Gameweek 14, tallying 14 goals and three assists over that period, with his price ballooning up to 12.9 as a result. The biggest wave of new owners (370,000) arrived after his four-goal spree against Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 8.

Aguero was then beset with injury for six Gameweeks, encouraging over one million owners to cash in on the Sky Blues striker. His ten starts following a full return in Gameweek 22 marked a downturn in productivity, harvesting just three goals and four assists as he struggled to recapture his lethal early-season displays.

From Gameweek 32 onwards, however, Aguero ran riot after Manuel Pellegrini moved from a 4-4-2 back to a lone striker system. Leading the line on his own, the Argentine turned in a breathless display of finishing prowess, notching nine goals and three assists – rendering him a must-have for City’s run-in.

This late flurry cemented his position at the summit of the scoring charts, having bagged five more goals (26) than his immediate challenger, Harry Kane (21). Aguero underlined his capacity for huge returns with three 15+ points hauls, netting two or more goals on six occasions. The former Atletico Madrid marksman supplemented this goal output with ten assists, becoming one of only three players (alongside Hazard and Silva) to post double figures in both the goals and assists columns.

Aguero’s scoring rate was unrivalled: no forward in the league could better his minutes per goal average (101.6), which in turn afforded him the best points per game average (6.5), ahead of Hazard (6.1). The Belgian livewire (42) did boast a superior tally of bonus points though, with Aguero (27) ranking fifth overall in that regard, just behind team-mate Silva (28).

The Prospects

As discussed in Monday’s article on Alexis Sanchez, the upcoming Copa America may have a part to play in our early-season plans. Pellegrini has insisted he will hand Aguero, Martin Demichelis and Pablo Zabaleta a 30-day break over the summer and bearing in mind that the Copa America final is on July 4, it may well be that, if Argentina progress to the latter stages, we could see a similar scenario to the 2014/15 campaign, when, as mentioned above, he was introduced off the bench in City’s first couple of matches.

As the chief goal threat for the league’s highest-scoring team in each of the past four years, a fully-fit Aguero will doubtless be the first name on most Fantasy managers’ squad list. To an extent, though, much may depend on how Pellegrini chooses to line up next term. There’s no question that Aguero functions better as a Fantasy asset on his own up top, though his manager’s penchant for a two-man frontline remains a concern.

The winter signing of Wilfried Bony could yet prove a spanner in the works, then. The Ivorian’s move from Swansea brought a proven Premier League scorer to the Etihad, yet he was handed just two starts by Pellegrini in 2015 after being snapped up for £28m on the back of his successful displays for the Welsh outfit.

Speaking on the former Swans striker recently, Pellegrini admitted that he was reluctant to start Bony in the midst of the Sky Blues’ winning streak but insisted he’ll be a key player next term:

“He was very unlucky maybe this year when we bought him because he started by going to the Africa Cup of Nations and he came back with a lot of games in his body. After that he had an important injury in his ankle and his knee in the same leg, so he stopped for about three or four weeks. After that we won five games in a row and I didn’t want to make changes during this moment. But it’s very important for him to play the minutes he can, first last week against Queens Park Rangers and now he has participated with a goal at Swansea. I am absolutely sure we bought the player that we need and that he will be important in our future.”

Time will tell whether Aguero and Bony can forge a mutually beneficial relationship, perhaps elevating the latter beyond an impact substitute and into a cheaper, yet profitable, route into City’s forward line. Certainly, if Bony can nail down a regular role ahead of the likes of Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic, his record at the Liberty suggests he could be one to watch.

Elsewhere in the premium bracket, it remains to be seen whether Diego Costa can afford us a consistency of pitch time to rival Aguero, having missed 12 matches through injury or suspension last time out. Similarly, with Daniel Sturridge set to be sidelined for the first couple of months of the new season and the likes of Robin van Persie struggling for a starting berth at United, it’s difficult to look beyond Aguero as the one must-have striker in our three-man frontlines for the campaign ahead.

would be just about right considering he's a week in week out captaincy contender when fit. Would be interesting to see how Bony is priced.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Who is the best fantasy forward of all time?

In midfield we have had many legends, most notably the holy trinity of Gerrard, Lampard and Ronaldo.

But what about in the forward positions? Who is the best since you started playing.

For me Suarez has all the attributes. He was injury free, scored well consistently which made him a reliable captaincy pick. Plus he was also explosive, capable of huge points hauls.

Who for you is the best fantasy forward of all time?

      Thierry Henry.

Best Defender is easily Gareth Bale. With Matty Taylor a notable mention.

In 2009-10, Bale was listed as a defender but played OOP and scored 118 points in 23 games (5.1 points per game). Based on ppg he was the top defender in FPL that season, just ahead of Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson. But Richard Dunne was the highest scoring defender that season with 170, mainly due to the large number of baps he received from the man in the stand.

In 2010-11, Baines scored 178 points (4.7ppg), and in 2012-13 he scored 177 (again 4.7ppg).

In 2013-14, Baines scored 169 (5.3ppg) and John Terry got 172(5.1ppg), both benefitting from the increased baps for defenders.

                  In 2014-15, Ivanovic got 179 (4.7ppg) and Terry 177 (also 4.7ppg).

In my opinion Bale was a good FPL defender who later became an even better midfielder, but the best FPL defenders in the last six seasons were Baines and Terry.

Suarez was probably the most reliable

Rooney, Drogba, Van Persie, were all great in their season. Especially Rooney as he is consistent over longer time periods, there was one season I had him and Drogba up front and they brought tons of points.

Only played properly the last 3/4 years, and didn't play last year so missed Suarez, so it has to be RVP for me. If Aguero can stay fit (big if), he could match him.

Suarez was simply unbelievable both on-field and on-screen. But aside from a few mavericks, everyone owned him, and aside from a couple of games (e.g. versus Tottenham) he was perma-captain for most. So it almost didn't matter what he did. I suppose it's the same for every high-scoring player in their heyday.

        • 11 Years

Yeah that's the problem, the truly great FPL players are owned by everyone, so they become almost irrelevant (like Kane this season). Van Persie was owned, and captained, by practically everyone every week in his debut season at Utd, so it was never particularly thrilling when he did well.

The true FPL gems are the ones who are capable of great things, but aren't universally owned. Walcott is a great example, as was Sanchez early this season.

Exactly, a great example! Not the most reliable players, but the ones who provide the excitement and joy. It was no great thrill to see, say, Van Persie score at home to West Brom or Norwich, because everyone had the armband on him. I didn't own Walcott GW38, but moments like that are the great ones, when you know you're being propelled up the rankings.

I think Suarez and RVP at his height stand out for me. I had a lot of joy from Drogba and Tevez too but they don't compare to the latter. Aguero could be up there one of these days if he could finally stay injury free.

Suarez hands down. 31 goals and a ton of assists. Could've hit 300 points if he'd had those games at the start of the season. I imagine the closest in the last 5 years wouldve been Drogba in 09/10 and Van Persie, although in Drogba's days I think it was harder to rack up bonus points, only 31 in the season to RVP's 45.

I do remember owning Henry on different fantasy games back in the day, doubt they had bonus points though so that would've affected his score. But he probably would be joint with Suarez for me as best ever-in an era where Arsenal were by far the most attacking team and he was near guaranteed points.

Thierry Henry was the best in the early days. Since then, only RVP for two seasons and Suarez for one season have come close to matching his level. So, if you're going to pick one as the best of all time, it has to be Henry.

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba will snub interest from Manchester City this summer to hold out for a move to Barcelona, according to reports.

It has been reported by the Manchester Evening News that City were confident of fighting off competition from Europe's biggest clubs for the likes of Pogba and Raheem Sterling.

However, they may have to expand their search for a long-term replacement for Yaya Toure, with Pogba's heart seemingly set on a move to the Nou Camp.

"Playing with Messi would be a dream come true. He's the best player in the world," the Frenchman told AS.

As I said yesterday, this is the problem Premiership clubs are having to get used to. The superstars of world football all go to Barcelona or Madrid, and everyone else can fight over the scraps.

My computer is in the process of crunching ~12m defensive combinations. Then I'll do a narrower search with the attackers (set Aguero and Hazard etc then fill the last few spots)

Once it finishes the defenders I'll do the search for the best C/VC combinations first though. That shouldn't take anywhere near as long as the defenders are.

Nope. Engineering is the application of theories to design.

Aeronautical etc become basically pure maths.
                        Civil etc is more design.
It ranges between the two extremes.

Maths doesnt tell you where to locate columns in a building, thats intuitive.

It's horrible finishing uni and realising "oh, I don't just walk into a job then?" I finished an English degree in Liverpool in 2012, had a couple of months of trying to find work, then got a work placement at the National Careers Service. They made me permanent and I worked there for a year, but it was a dead end job paying peanuts. I had to move to London in 2013 to get a decent job, now workin in recruitment - absolutely nothing to do with my degree.

No idea if Australia is the same, but it does feel like all work is concentrated in the capital over here.

It's a bit different here with the greater distances (although certainly concentrated in the capitals of each state). But, yeah, it's basically Sydney/Melbourne where the work is.

The problem is the field I'm in is in an enormous slump with the current economic climate. :/

That's tough, the problem with my desired field was that Britain isn't great for a career in the arts at the moment: all prospects are in London, and rent here is extortionate, so you can't really survive while trying to develop a career in literature.

I was lucky to land in a decent job, it's tough out there.

Just curious, how are you working it out? Did you write a program for it? And since you are on defenders I assume you are done with GKs. What's the best GK combo for a dead team?

        1. Billy Gilmore
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 11 months ago

I basically split it up into 5 groups (one for first defender, one for second defender etc). The first group contains the top 10 scorers for the season, the second group the top 10 scorers and top 10 PPG defenders, third group top 20 PPG I think, then the last 2 are a combo of top PPG options and PPG/£1m (but with anyone over £5m removed)

It basically runs through every possible combination of those 5 groups and calculates the score of the 3 that would've played each week. So I will have a list of like 12m combinations with their total score, initial cost and value that I can use later.

The best GKs were Cech/Fabianski or Mignolet/Heaton with 177 points. Pantilimon/Heaton is probably the pick of the bunch with 173 points at only £9m though.

2nd quote there is more worrying for Chelsea. Definitely could do with strengthening the 2nd holding midfielder, an actually productive attacking winger unlike Willian/Cuadrado and a 3rd striker (if not Bamford).

Players prices are going to be very interesting this year.

Aguero (13m?), Costa (11m?), Hazard (11m?) Kane (10m?) Silva (10m?) mean we're all going to start with some really interesting and different big hitters, and this is without even mentioning players like Ivan (7.5?), Terry (7.0?) Siggy (7.5) who are all likely to have big price hikes.

I wonder who will start with a bang and who will prove to be shred investments!

Costa won't be 11m. In Aguero's debut season he got 211 points and he was 11m the next season. Costa only got 150 this time. Obviously there was injury but that should be expected for next season too.

I don't think Kane will be 10m. They don't tend to elevate players to the elite bracket after one great breakout season. I'm thinking a bit like Ramsey after his wonder season. More like 9m, maybe 9.5m

Siggy had a very long barren spell so I don't see a huge hike for him. Ivan and Terry are matching Baines's best seasons so 7.5 is the ceiling.

Definitely will be interesting though. Sanchez pricing will be really crucial to squads.

I hope not. There is a case for something around def mids. But on the whole I think this season was a great improvement. My research also shows that a key issue in 13/14 - of full backs being penalised - has been removed.

He is leaving, he's out of contract and it isn't being renewed, so it's a case of which club he chooses. Similar to Valdes.

When I say it isn't being renewed, I mean that he is choosing not to renew it. He announced last week that they have offered him one laden with clauses, and he isn't signing it.

While its quiet and I'm on the site...

I've been talking for the last few days about setting up a ML next year, £5 entry (paid through paypal to me). Around 40-50 entrants:
    1st prize - 50% of pot
    2nd prize 30% of pot
    3rd prize 20% of pot.

Already had a LOT of interest, which is amazing! I'm already drawing up a spreadsheet so it's not a huge rush and kerfuffle to get members when FPL re opens, so if you are interested in joining just send me an email at fantasyfootballaz7@gmail.com, and i'll add you to the spreadsheet (and therefore reserve list) and email you with more details nearer the time

Goes without saying, but I'm not out to rip anyone off(!) Just want to create a competitive ML with a nice cash reward for the victors.

Totally, I've been reading a fair amount about Andrew over the past couple days, listened to a radio interview. Glad to see an old skool journalist just keep plugging away and in the end result achieving the desired result.

He really deserves to sit in court on the days of the trials. Hopefully he'll be called as a witness?

Blatter and cronies need to go down for a decent stretch and be stripped of their current wealth....

The concise psychological profile of Blatter (the need for private jets to affirm his self-importance) was really eye-opening and removes any last shred of sympathy I had for him.

I usually don't like the idea of old men going to prison for non-violent crimes but in his case I'll make an exception 🙂

It could work out and I understand the school of thought that says Falcao has now got a full season to regain fitness, he could be banging in the goals next season etc.

Personally though, I am in the other camp who thinks he's just lost that slight extra special thing he had which made him a top player and so he will never be the same again.

And maybe you're right that he'll never be the same again, but I'd expect him to be better than this season. So even if he isn't breaking records with his goal scoring, he could well improve his season totals to a respectable level, which might suit Chelsea as they just want a back up.

The reports that Falcao wants to join Chelsea also reports that he's willing to half his wages in order to do so, which equates to roughly £130k per week. Pretty reasonable for a Falcao

Personally I wanted him to stay at United for another season on reduced wages of course. Could work for them.

Not sure he'll be o.k with being behind D.Costa so I'd expect this not to happen.

I think he'd be quite play with it as he continues his recovery and is playing with a number of faces he's used to/knows well. I think all he wants is more than 10 minute cameos.

      Maureen isn't that daft, surely?

I suppose if there's one premier league team where Falcao could conceivably do well, it's Chelsea. But I don't see why Maureen would take that gamble.

Not a huge gamble when you play with 1 striker and have 2 excellent strikers already in Costa and Remy.

I am thinking of the opportunity cost of playing Falcao instead of those guys in any given situation.

        Not really a massive gamble.

Plus, all United strikers (including Rooney when he played there) had difficult periods this season, it is LVG's style that may cause that. At Chelsea, now that he has recovered a bit, I think he could do well...

This was very interesting from last year:
          https://thebubblegame.wordpress.com/2014/09/03/falca-oh/

Essentially, take away his penalties and he's been much less effective than the standard narrative would have you believe. And he's been in decline for 3 seasons. As far as I can see, he's spent a season confirming that.

Hmmm now that is interesting indeed! Very interesting, there might be more going on than meets the eye it seems. Perhaps I've been wrong about him this whole time!

I don't think anyone (not even I) would say that he's a poor player. But that article paints a picture of a striker who managed to get an undeserved reputation as an elite striker by playing in very favourable conditions. And that reputation has blinded people to his long-term decline.

Of course, that article is about all-round goal contribution. He's probably still got it in him to be a good finisher, which is why I say that Chelsea *might* be a good fit, because Jose doesn't necessarily expect much more of his strikers than finishing.

It is very interesting, I'd be lying if I didn't say that I found it odd most of the leagues he played in barring La Liga weren't considered the very top leagues, but I never really believed it too much.

I think you could well be right on this.

Notice that you have to evaluate the leagues by their defences here. Atletico is a massive team in a poorly defending La Liga, and Falcao scored tons. French league teams shut the opponent down very effectively before even thinking of attacking, and Falcao suffered.

My verdict on him is that given time and space, he's an extra-ordinary finisher from distance as well as inside the box. But he is not much more than that and it is not too difficult to take that time and space from him if you really put your mind to it (I don't mean you, personally, but top level defences).

Could be a good fit for Chelsea, in fact. All he needs to do is to search for some openings and be there when Haz and Cesc deliver the ball. And goals will come. (Essentially, I agree with Roscola).

Lower NPGC/90 than Balo!?!?!? Oh my, that's BAD!

There's some effect from his time in France where he really suffered against the tougher defences (out of the top leagues, it is the one where teams get the least shots, shots inside the box, and indeed goals). I recall how defenders said that he's easy to mark out after having played Monaco. But that definitely does not speak good of him. His record in EL is quite outstanding, however. Then again, EL really is a lower league.

Another factor is that seasons 2010-12 in City are counted in for Balo, who played in City back then and was delivered some pretty nice scoring chances consistently.

Yeah, it's a bad picture. And Balotelli is a very weird one. It's NPGA90, so it includes assists so as to be a measure of overall goal contribution.

But it's hard to argue with the top 10 in that chart as a "who's who" of the European elite. That lends a lot of weight to NPGA90 as a good measure of what we think of as representing a good forward.

it certainly is not the whole deal about it. You have to take into consideration that some forwards produce almost nothing but their goals (+assists), e.g. Gomez, Ronaldo, Falcao, whereas some produce a lot more, e.g. Lewnadowski, Benteke, Giroud, Mandzukic. Also, players who come in as substitutes often (Higuain, Hernandez, Walcott) end up having inflated numbers, so that must be taken into account. Then teams and leagues are not equal, in some leagues teams attack more freely and concede more chances (Netherlands, Germany) or differences between teams are huge (Spain, England, Portugal), which gives more scoring chances and goals for forwards in the big teams (Ronaldo, Messi, Lewandowski, Aguero, Costa etc.).

But all these factors can in fact be taken into account afterwards and NPGA/90 (or NPGC/90 for goal_contribution_ as I denoted the same thing) gives a good starting point when evaluating forwards. Sure these other factors don't make Falcao's case any better, so there is a reason to caution with him. I recall being very unimpressed of him when he played back in Monaco. Many expected him to destroy Ligue 1, but he was hardly visible in matches I watched. Scored a poacher's goal against PSG, though, and I guess that sums him up pretty well. See it here:

                http://www.lfp.fr/ligue1/feuille_match/77568

Notice a curious fact that supports my note on his dependence on playing against weak defences:t Silva had just got substituted 4 minutes before Falcao's goal, and the guy who fails to mark him here is Camara, a player who should not be playing top tier football at all, and definitely should not get to play in a team like PSG. He is totally an amateur level defender and was I think 35-year-old already back then.

Ah yes, I see NPGC/90 now.

It's amazing how much hype there was on these boards when United signed Falcao last year. There was basically an expectation that he would have a 30+ goal season.

Which was always ridiculous, really. Personally, I expected that Costa, if able to play a full season, would score 25-28 goals for Chelsea, and in aftermath it looks like I was right about that (since he missed a huge chunk of the season and still scored 20 goals). However, it never seemed very likely that he would play a full season, either.

By the way, something I noticed in that table as a positive surprise was Benzema's numbers, considering his absolutely amazing all round game that assumably brings his direct goal contribution down from what it could be. And it was before this season, he certainly has only done better after it. I like him even more now. So immensely underrated player because having adapted to play support to Ronaldo in Real who don't really use the full potential of their players. If Real is going to sell him, I'd take him anywhere. Heard Arsenal is willing to break their bank and sell Giroud to get Benzema, and if this deal is a real possibility, Wenger would be fool not to make it happen.

I think I said it yesterday - Benzema is the only transfer rumour I've heard so far who would be straight in my GW1 team. His performance at the world cup showed just how well he would fit into the premier league (where players like Soldado struggle because of their style).

I recall that. Soldado struggles because of his lack of quality, simply. just by reading his stats, I knew it already before he joined Spurs.

Okay, I admit, I had also watched him play and that could have affected it, but his stats told the story, too, if you were able to read them.

Lots of rumours of it and a wage cut. Could be just because Mendes is his and Morinhos agent. The same happened with Ronaldo. Depends if he's happy being 2nd/3rd choice striker.

I would like to see it although it could ruin Chelsea's forward line in Fantasy terms.
