The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Pulis’ West Brom

We continue our members articles looking back at last season with a review of West Brom’s displays under Tony Pulis. The Welshman took the helm after Alan Irvine was sacked – with the Baggies lying 16th in the Premier League on December 30 – and ultimately steered them to a 13th-placed finish, a full nine points clear of the drop zone. We’ll compare the attacking numbers from both managers’ spells in charge, and assess the similarities and differences in the statistics.

Irvine was a surprise appointment ahead of the 2014/15 season, having endured difficult spells in charge at Preston and Sheffield Wednesday. After managing a mere four wins from Albion’s first 19 matches, the Scot was relieved of his duties, with Pulis taking over on January 1, signing a two-and-a-half-year deal. Under the former Stoke and Crystal Palace boss, the Baggies secured seven victories from 18 matches, including wins against Man United and Chelsea in the final months of the season.

      Don't like Lukaku or Tekkers
Would downgrade to Sakho or Wilson and upgrade mahrez
      Monreal + Shaw = 2 risks

Thanks. Has anyone looked into player historical pre seaon form, as an indicator for early season performance? I'm thinking back to last season when Stoke City's Bojan pre season form was fantastic, was a key draft, but he then failed to live up to the promise in early season. One wonders how many other pre season promise players fail to (or actually live up to) the expectations.

Friends, some RMT thoughts would be much appreciated:

      Butland / Ruddy

      Azpilicueta / Koscielny / Huth / Williams / PVA

      Sterling / Fabregas / Ozil / Henderson / Ritchie

      Rooney / Sakho / Lukaku

Thinking - cash in on Lukaku's big GW1 before transferring to Pelle for GW2

      Dilemmas:

      (1) Is Ivanovic worth the additional 1M on Azpilicueta?

      (2) Is there a better 4.5M/5M option than Williams out there?

      (3) Is it mad to go Fabregas (and better overall balance) ahead of Hazard?

      (4) Is there a better 5th midfield/3rd forward rotation pair than Ritchie and Sakho (Deeney, for example)?

Really appreciate any advice or observations from the experts.

    Which GK strategy is better?

    a) 4.5 + 4.0 from the same club (Guaranteed starter, cheap etc. Risky if you end up with a dodgy defence though)

    b) 4.5 + 4.5 (More flexibility, option to cherry pick fixtures with H/A rotation etc. Frustrating if you get it wrong and bench the points)

B but rotating based on fixture difficulty, not that silly H/a thing. I'm convinced that's how people end up benching points so often.

Apologies if this has come up before, I've had a quick search but can't find anything.

Hazard ownership currently @ 55%, and correct me if I am wrong, but is more likely to go down in price if he blanks over the first 2/3 GWs than he is to go up if he scores?

Is it therefore more sensible to try and get him in GW3/4?

    1. GoRedz
      • 9 Years

If you believe he's gonna blank, yes.

    2. AriseSirGiggsy
      • 13 Years
      8 years, 10 months ago

If he scores against Swansea you'd gonna be chasing (at least) 55% of the field
Also, isn't the number of transfers requird to cause a price drop relative to the ownership numbers? Ie. the more that own him, the more sales if would take to cause a price drop
Also, he's a season keeper. A temporary price drop isn't going to matter unless an injury occurs
Also, people will keep him regardless

Anyone not goin with hazard is taking a huge risk. But yes it could pay off..if it doesn't then it means you have lost points on 55% of people playing.. Many of which will have captained him.this is reason I would not be able to leave him out.

If it pays off then credit to you for being brave 😉

All good points above, but you have to think what you can do with the 2.5m difference in Fab's price. In Sky they are virtually the same (9.0-8.7), so sure go Haz, but in FPL it is a big, big difference... nearly 30% or so.

      i.e.

Fab+Kane = 18.5m, or Haz+7m striker? I've gone Fab and Kane in this case. And have 2.5m ITB for Rooney>Aguero.

I think Haz and Aguero is too expensive. So I would advise Fab and Aguero, Or Haz and City mid.

I am more scared of not having Aguero than I am Haz. But maybe that's just me!

The money saved in swapping him, gets me a 4th MF that has great form and fixtures.

It's basically Silva and Mane instead of Hazard and Henderson. Over the whole season I fancy the Hazard option, but I want to take advantage of Manes early fixtures, and if Hazard is more likely to drop than rise it makes it possible.

Two teams have already picked up Messi and Ronaldo respectively.

Who could I choose too soften the blow from losing those two?
Rules suggest assists and goals carry same points, So KDB maybe? Or any other player? I need about 3 attackers to complete my team.

Benzema if he stays could be great with his assist potential.
        Hazard and Aguero too.

Does anyone know how I can get a clickable link for my private league so that my friends automatically enter the league as soon as they click the link?

Go to Leagues, click your league, click the Send Invite tab, and type in their email addresses.

Don't know if it'll be a clickable link but it should make it easier

RMT: still torn between Pelle / Mané & Rooney / Costa... Not sold on Rooney to be honoust, but opinions are welcome.

    Fabianski / Schmeichel

    Azpi / kos / Mings / Cedric / OShea

    Haz / Ozil / Wally / Mané / Mutch

    Sakho / Wilson / Costa

That strikeforce is a bit on the cheap side!?

I have Rooney, not sold on him either personally... Tempted to switch for Kane...

Kane also on my list. Could go Kane / Pellè / Sakho...

RMT please guys! Got to say I'm finally liking the look of it:

    Stek | Ruddy

    Clyne | Azpi | Bellerin | Alderweireld | Yoshida

    Walcott | Sterling | Depay | Henderson | Hoolahan

    Costa | Pelle | Sakho

Gestede could be a GW1 option if he's a similar price to Sakho.

Do we have any idea how much of a regular BELLERIN is going to be?

A healthy Debuchy may displace Bellerin

    2. The Governor

      Yoshida probably won't play.

Defence is a bit expensive all round, for my liking. Or are you looking to play 4 at the back?

No Hazard is risky, with over 50% ownership...

I did have Hazard, with a weaker defence & Benteke upfront. Charity Shield might change my mind.

I'm still inclined to pick Yoshida, Koeman rates him & I can't see Caulker just walking into the first team.

Downgrade Hoolahan to a 4.5 since you presumably won't be playing your 5th mid. Bellerin and Yoshida not nailed, and I'd wait on the Spurs defense

Hoolahan will play in GW1 for me, Sakho on the bench

If you're set on the rest I'd get rid of Bellerin. Much better available at that price

Okay, think I have "nearly" arrived at a squad that I am happy with... Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

    Butland -- Ruddy

    Ivanovic
Sakho -- Cedric -- Richards -- Coates (Playing 2 of these 4 every week means that they'll only face Tottenham (twice) from last seasons top 7 in the first 20 gameweeks)

Hazard -- Walcott -- Mane -- Ritchie -- King (as my current cheap £4.5m placeholder)

    Rooney -- Benteke -- Vardy

    £2m in the bank...

I'm happy with it. But I'd be happy to hear why I'm wrong 😀

It's Tekkers that now concerns me, hasn't traveled with squad to Helsinki with team for final friendly.. not sure what Brendan is playing at but would be surprised if he just throws him right in GW1

      I could be wrong though..

        I wouldn't worry too much.

Only taken 16 players to Finland.

There is another friendly on Sunday against Swindon, so let's see if he makes it then...

If you could only choose 1 for a Stick Keeper, which one would you choose???

    A) Kasper

    B) Ruddy

    C) Butland

Current team below if anyone cares to pick holes at it to get me a better option in goal..

    ___
    Huth/Francis/Azpi
    Sterling/Haz/Mane/Walcott
    Kane/Rooney/Wilson

    ___/Fletcher/Cedric/Targett

Anybody's thoughts on Gestede? I know he's not on the list yet.

Saw him play last year and was very physical, fast and a real handful. Obviously a big step up to the PL. Chance of 4-4-2 at Villa?
