The Digest – Gameweek 3

We wrap up our take on Gameweek 3 with The Digest – our summary of the ten previous fixtures which picks out the top player, the major source of Fantasy talent and the big issue raised.

The Player

As the first player in Premier League history to produce a goal and assist in each of his first two home matches, Alvaro Morata could barely have asked for a more convincing start to life at Stamford Bridge.

Double-figure Fantasy Premier League hauls in both his home appearances for Chelsea have persuaded over 165,000 new owners to invest in the summer signing from Real Madrid as he wastes little time in settling into life in England’s top-flight.

At 24 years old, and after numerous campaigns as a squad player, Morata finally has the chance to establish himself as a regular under the guidance of Antonio Conte.

A glance back to 2016/17 shows that only 14 of his 26 league outings came in the Real Madrid first XI – yet he ended the season as their second-top scorer in La Liga.

It was a similar story for Juventus in both 2014/15 (11 starts, 18 sub appearances) and 2015/16 (16 starts, 18 sub appearances), with the Spaniard unable to cement a place on the teamsheet for the Old Lady.

Yet Morata’s output at Real last year bodes well for both the Blues and would-be Fantasy suitors – in spite of that limited pitch time, an average of 88.9 minutes per league goal was bettered only by Harry Kane (87.3) among FPL forwards.

His impact merely adds to a growing list of FPL frontmen jostling for our attention.

Of the 12 forwards to be initially priced at 8.5 or over in FPL this season, eight have started at least two matches. And only one of that eight – Harry Kane, who has produced more shots and efforts in the box than any player in the league – has failed to find the net.

Encouragingly for Conte, his big-money frontman has been quick to insist that he needs more time to settle.

That’s good news for the Blues, then, but the imminent return to action of Eden Hazard – at 10.5 to Morata’s 10.1 – also has to be factored in here.

Despite the heroics of Diego Costa last time out, the Belgian remained Fantasy royalty – he’s served up 190+ points in four of the last five seasons, with spot-kick duties a key weapon in his armoury.

But if Morata can maintain his momentum, there’s a chance he could even rival Hazard as our go-to Chelsea option as the campaign unfolds.

The Team

Three Gameweeks into the new season and we’re experiencing déjà vu with Liverpool.

They may have been devoid of want-away playmaker Philipp Coutinho so far but Jurgen Klopp’s side continue to offer Fantasy managers a wealth of prolific options.

A weekend demolition of Arsenal merely served a reminder of the Merseysiders’ unquenchable thirst for goals, with Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino all finding the net.

The former two sit inside the top four midfielders, while Firmino – reclassified as a striker – ranks joint-first in the overall standings.

We shouldn’t be too surprised by this. As evidenced last season, where six Liverpool midfielders returned at least 139 FPL points, relying on the concept of “coverage” when it comes to Klopp’s side can be a fruitless task.

So far, all three of their key men merit our attention. Mane has scored in every league match, Salah has registered more shots on target than any player, while Firmino now boasts spot-kicks and looks the bonus darling of the trio.

Their big-match mentality under Klopp also enhances Liverpool’s attackers as fire and forget options. In 2016/17, Liverpool won five and drew five of their 10 fixtures against top six sides – a total of 20 points accrued was more than any of their rivals and double that of both Manchester clubs, for example.

As highlighted by Salah’s benching at home to Palace, the Champions League schedule may throw us a curveball every now and again.

But as the 212,000 FPL managers who transferred out the Egyptian ahead of last week’s deadline can attest to, turning our back on Liverpool due to the occasional threat of rotation looks a very risky move.

There is also growing optimism surrounding Klopp’s defence.

Liverpool ended last season keeping five clean sheets from their final six matches.

They have now earned two shut-outs over their three Gameweek fixtures this season and have allowed just 14 shots in the box – second only to Manchester City.

We may still presume a vulnerability at set-pieces, but if Klopp can possibly close a deal for Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk, that could also be corrected.

At that point, we would have to consider the merits of defensive investment. That would possibly bring full-backs Andrew Robertson and Alberto Moreno into the equation. Both appear to be competing for the left-back berth and, if a dominant party emerges, they could offer strong value at 4.9 and 4.5 respectively.

The Talking Point

There’s no real right or wrong time to play an FPL Wildcard – mostly, the decision is relative to both the state of your 15-man squad and the fixtures ahead.

Yet as the transfers in and out escalate over the first international break of the season, the reset button is a temptation.

On the one hand, there’s a fear that three Gameweeks worth of data isn’t enough to base our alterations on. We’ve also yet to factor in the impact of the likes of Hazard, Coutinho and Alexis Sanchez – wherever he lands up – into our thinking.

Yet we’ve also borne witness to a number of scenarios that can help steer our selections and help navigate the imminent price drops brought about by the frantic FPL market.

Despite failing to find the net, Kane’s goal threat has not been diminished by Spurs’ move to Wembley. Neither has Dele Alli’s.

Klopp’s “heavy metal football” will ensure that Liverpool’s attackers will still dazzle, even if Coutinho departs.

Man United’s midfield will benefit from the pace of Romelu Lukaku up front, with Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan looking the value options. Indeed, the Belgian’s spot-kick miss against Leicester could now strengthen Pogba’s chances of snatching penalties.

At Man City, Sergio Aguero’s role as a regular is up in the air after a switch to one up front brought about his benching at Bournemouth. And Pep Guardiola’s 3-3-2-2 may not get the best out of Kevin De Bruyne.

In defence, Marcos Alonso has been quick to replicate last season’s heroics, while an injury-free Phil Jones, at just 5.1, could help save the pennies as the best route into the Red Devils’ rearguard.

Add in the recent addition of wing-back systems at Stoke, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Swansea and there’s arguably plenty to go on.

Currently, just over 119,000 Wildcards have been activated, that’s a far cry from the 310,000 that were used at this time last season, with this first international break the most popular time to play the chip in 2016/17. It remains to be seen if events on Thursday’s transfer deadline will urge more into committing to a rebuilding programme.

Evening everyone, how does this WC look?

    DDG
    Alonso | Daniels | Naughton
    Sanchez | Pogba | T. Carroll | Atsu
    Kane | Jesus | Firmino

    Elliot | Lowe | Mbemba | RLC

    Thanks

      Unsure about...

      1. Sanchez
      2. Mids - playing Atsu and TC
      3. Bench is too weak

I'd downgrade DDG or Alonso and upgrade one of the mids

Thanks, yes no.1 is the high risk potential high return.....I do really want him though, and that's at Arsenal or City.

Although not great, once RLC is back, he and TC rotate quite nicely so I'll alternate them.

Atsu is a bit weak and a stab in the dark, but I'm hoping them 3 up top and Sanchez/Pogba is enough attacking returns wise.

Not sure about Daniels - Jones, Southampton, WBA perhaps better for now, and monitor Bournemouth. In a few weeks' time Maguire will be a good pick I think.

You could downgrade DDG and Alonso and upgrade Carroll but it's up to you, if you like expensive defs and goalies it's your team.

Alonso is nailed in my team, had him since GW1.
DDG is in there because I want United defensive coverage, and don't want to risk on Jones.
Thanks though, feel a right atm, pending Sanchez news

If you are WCing now, is it advisable to keep something ITB or spend it all on fielding the strongest 11 and a decent bench? If not, what would be a good to have ITB amount?

    Thanks!

Get players you want and have some confidence in and if you have money left then that's fine, don't spend it just cos it's there

I think it depends really, If rather have a team which is flexible for change with 0 ITB than one that is quite rigid and 0.5 ITB

In a right pickle sitting pretty at 2.9m OR. Can't seem to catch any attacking points.

    WC team, 0.2itb.

    Foster
    Alonso / Jones / Cedric / Mee
    Mane / Miki / Silva
    Kane / Morata / Firmino

    Elliot Carroll 4.5 mid Mbemba

Keeping the faith in Harry and laughing at the bench. Any thoughts welcomed!

I'm going with a 4.0 def for a bit longer, hoping an increase in team value &/or bargain mid/striker emerging will make the upgrade easier on the budget further down the line.

    Foster (Elliot)

Alonso - Jones - Cedric - Fernandez (Lowe)

What's everyone think to my wildcard team.

    Foster, Elliot
    Jones, Yoshida, Naughton, Wimmer, Mbemba
    Mane, Alli, Erikson, Mkitharyan, Carroll
    Lukaku, Firmino, Chicharito

My big guns haven't performed, I'm hoping Alli& Eriksen will cover any Kane points. And both are more than capable of outscoring him. Torn between Pogba and Mkitharyan.

    1. Yozzer
      • 6 Years
      6 years, 8 months ago

Good team but don't fool yourself with the ' cover ' theory. If kane bags a brace his captain ownership will hurt you wether you have alli and Erikssen or not.

      1. Holteendersinthesky
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 8 months ago

I feel both Erikson and Alli are potential good captain choices as well. If Kane does score one of them two 9/10 assist it's. I think all of my attacking players minus Carroll can be decent captain choices depending on games. Still massively torn about pogba and Mkitharyan. Wasn't a fan of Pogba and I feel Mkitharyan will score more points but since lukaku missed the pen they makes pogba a lot more appealing.

Very similar to mine....Easy so switch Alli (or Erik) to Pogba/Silva leaving the cash to do Lukaku to Kane as/when form provails.

I had Kane and Silva up until my wildcard. I just like the double cover off spurs, Liverpool and Man U at the moment. Slightly worried about no city cover but like you said it's an easy change.

Any last second transfer moves make you consider a new/old FPL player?

Think Abraham at 5.5M will be nice if Llorente goes to Chelsea
Liverpool's defence could be worth looking at after they get van Dijk. They got 6/7 cleansheets I believe in their last league games.
Sanchez at City could be disgusting too

I am hoping to be able to do this, too.

I do have iffy areas, namely two Southampton defenders & Fraser... but nothing team threatening yet. Things still haven't settled and at least for my current team, can't see the rush to chop & change.

Having said that, WCs still are useful for some. (E.g. My boss had a team including Kolasinac, KDB, JWP and two 4.0 defenders... Yoshida & Hegazi aren't particularly nailed, either).

Just got this.... Liverpool sold Coutinho to Barcelona 2 weeks ago for £140m deal. Barcelona agreed to Coutinho going on 01/09 so that Liverpool did not have to pay a premium for players with other teams knowing they had this money to spend. Liverpool also felt the fans would not be as upset if Liverpool had signed two or three more players and Coutinho had "forced" the deal through. Coutinho had his medical 2 weeks ago and the agreement was that he would not play another game and would go to Barca straight from the international break. Barca have agreed to form a relationship with Liverpool over transfers also as part of the deal.. Namely if they are prepared to let players go they would inform Liverpool first

  21. What to do with Firmino?

So, with Firmino looking great and at a really attractive price, should we:

    A) going for a big front three of Lukaku Kane Firmino (Kaku and Kane could also be Morata Jesus Laca or Aguero)

    B) keeping a third cheep striker (Tammy, Mounie, JRod etc) and having 2 10+ other strikers

    C) Should we consider Firmino as a big hitter and worth a spot in our 2 big striker slot? And so dropping one Kaku, Kane etc? This option gives us a lot of money to spend

If I get him in it would be as part of a big three for a while.

Ultimately though I'm not sure that amount in attack is viable if haz, Sanchez get settled and fire in the points.

I consider him a v well priced heavy hitter.

        Cheers!

Yeah I think I might go for the big front three but only for 3-4 GW. Then I'll probably use my WC and go back to a cheapest 3rd striker if I need to fund a 10+ mid.
Like you said, long term he probably needs to be considered as a well priced big hitter.

I'm sticking with 2 strikers for now (Lukaku and Kane) with 4.5 Quaner on the bench and investing in midfield (and Alonso)
If Kane gets ditched, then yes 3 strikers, probably Firmino in there at his cracking price and Morata would be nice too.

I have A - Kane, Lukaku and Firmino.

But if that wasn't my set up I consider Firmino a big hitter. If he was a midfielder he would be classed as a premium mid, the fact he's a forward doesn't stop him being a premium player and therefore a 'big hitter'.

I hoped before FPL opened he would be classed as a forward and he's always been in my team since the first draft.

I will be captiaining him next gameweek against City.

I have had A from the start - would be working better if Kane had fired! Will probably eventually downgrade Kaku (only slightly to either Jesus or Morata). Happy with a cheapie def though - I know not everyone is

C for me so far this season with Firmino, Lukaku and Mounie currently. As you highlight, enables a much stronger team elsewhere, issue will be when Kane starts firing, not having him as a captaincy option is trouble.

    12. Rödallegabomb ᴿᴮ
      • 11 Years

Firmino was criminally underpriced, not sure why others didn't go for him from the off. The fact he has been reclassified as a forward makes him a better pick compared with the other Liverpool assets in terms of bonus points, where he will almost always dominate.

Think going with a frontline such as Kane, Lukaku and Firmino is the way to go, as it offers the most security and flexibility. It also means that if it doesn't work out, you can easily switch to another route especially with a WC.

I have a frontline of Kane lukaku and gabbi with salah also.

Wildcard in pocket for now and I expect when I use it, or get rid of gabbi I'll get a forward of 7m or less.

Kane and lukaku staying in my team for now and then plus firming is too expensive for my liking.

We also forget that last season firmino went an awfully long time without delivering in fpl terms...

Because I thought he would only work like a dog to allow Salah and Mané to get runs into the box and score more than him.

Because I was reluctant to pay 8.5 for my third striker.

And we didn't know for sure he would indeed be the PK taker.

There were a fe good reasons. Easy to boast with hindsight.

I guess I'm just being stubborn, but I'm still not completely convinced. Rooney isn't too far behind, Vardy's fixtures improve and I have a good feeling about Abraham with those fixtures. Eyeing up Kane, Laca and one of those atm.

I think that's actually an argument in favour of Firmino, not against.

Having other viable strikers just below his price point (say Rooney or Vardy) means that we can confidently plan to spend 7.5 - 8.5 on one of the striker slots.

Today it's Firmino's place to lose, tomorrow it's an easy switch to one of the others, if needed.

Away at the Etihad? That's a tough game, City defence is tight now. I have Jesus who I prefer v a rubbish Liverpool defence than Firmino v a good City defence. Maybe to Firmino after.

Other strikers Kane and Abraham and happy to hold on both.

Lest you all forget, Firmino went on about a four month run of getting horrendous returns last season. This purple path may be only that.

      A.
Took him at the beginning of the season with Lukaku & Jesus.
Reasons: Basically playing in same position as last year so you're looking at 10-15 goals and assists. Plus he'd added penalties.
Couldn't see any 3rd mids in that price bracket that seemed to offer same points potential.
Thought Liverpool would start strong (have Salah as well)
Seemed an easier decision to downgarde an 8.5m striker than a 10m striker if needs be.
Cost was also a factor due to the premium and even good defenders being that much more expensive this year. Also after years of trying to rotate keepers thought I would spend extra and start with DDG.

If Sanchez goes to City I'll likely get Morata in as the rotation risk of Jesus will be too great.

What I want to know is whether Kane will break the table this season the way Zlatan did last season. Any advice on that would be much appreciated, Jonty. 😉

That's an interesting enough video, thanks.

But actually, the best predictor of goals that will be scored is... goals already scored. At least it was the last time I looked.

Not to say that it's a magic formula or should be used blindly. Sometimes it's clear that the underlying stats make the likelihood of continued goals from a particular player less likely. But it is nevertheless the most reliable single indicator as far as I know.

Jonty's table seeks to find the players that 'should' have been scoring but haven't. It is seeking to do something completely different in other words (if I understand it right).

Exactly this - it looks at players that haven't scored but should in terms of attempts - but it also shows why they aren't - shots not close enough, not accurate enough.

It can be interpreted in a glass half full way - as in they will improve shooting accuracy.

Or a glass half empty - they are just simply inaccurate or long rangers.

Sometimes you get freaks in this though like Ibra and Kane - where they are off the chart in terms of a partic metric.

With Kane the stats to me indicate that it is a case of when not if he starts hauling.

But a pessimist may look at it and think he never will.

Yeah. I looked at his numbers and took a -8 to get him in as (c) last weekend.

Last season I did something similar with Zlatan against Burnley and he broke the PL record for goal attempts in one game. But didn't score. Last weekend Kane broke his personal record of attempts in a game without scoring. Against Burnley.

The only thing I can take from this is that the sooner Burnley are relegated the better it will suit me. 😉

Ibra eventually broke like a tropical storm v Swansea.

Kane will break his drought too - it could be at Everton , or could be SWA but if he maintains his current level of close range efforts it would be almost supernatural for him not to score.

            When not if with kane.

Yeah, I know, I held Zlatan for a while and after that terrible first game for me he was great. I'm hoping the same will happen with Kane. And I agree, when not if. Because his capability is proven beyond all doubt.

I expect I'll captain him in GW4 and for the foreseeable. 🙂

I agree it's when not if, but have still booted him from my team this week - I'll bring him back when he finds his scoring boots. Had 2 FT's so brought in Morata + Mkhitaryan, thinking that those 2 will bring in more points, and about .5m of TV (although the transfer market slowdown might mean this doesn't turn out to be the case, but already 0.2 better off) despite trickier fixtures, than Kane + Ritchie.

Do players fit particular patterns over time do you know?

Like some strikers (like a Rooney) always scored goals in gluts of 4-5 game streaks...then went dry. Then the levee breaks...then they go ape-sh*t for short periods.

Whereas someone like a Costa never ever seemed to run dry, but just trickled a single goal in every other match.

Probably down to how the team plays as much as the individual player.

Maybe your goals imminent table should be more like a weather forecast...not only predicting when it will rain goals, but also whether it's likely to be drizzle or a full-on monsoon 🙂

Surprised by the -8 revelation Ruth - I've seen other comments from you on here referring to value as a key factor in the make up of an FPL squad, and elsewhere stating that Kane is not worth 12.5m. With those views, why take a -8 to bring him in (other than his stats)?

            1. Ruth_NZ
              • 9 Years
              6 years, 8 months ago

It was precisely because of his stats. And the value consideration is completely different with a player you intend to use as a captain.

I have never said that Kane isn't worth 12.5m. I said that he isn't worth 12.5m if you aren't going to captain him fairly regularly. Quite different things.
