Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 3

Jose Mourinho reveals that Phil Jones has been playing through the pain barrier for Man United. Everton’s number one Jordan Pickford withdraws from international duties with a muscle problem, while Eden Hazard is destined to step up his recovery with minutes for Belgium against Gibraltar.

Here’s the latest on the injuries influencing Fantasy managers’ plans.

New Arrivals

After seeing his side chalk up a third successive win and clean sheet on Saturday, Jose Mourinho revealed that Phil Jones has been playing through the pain barrier in the heart of defence:

“For years and years and years he was injury prone and he has a problem now, he’s complaining about an ankle problem so he’s the kind of player where we need to have him always in our hands with a lot of care from the medical department, the fitness coach, my assistants in the gym, working on prevention and recovery”.

In spit of his manager’s words, Jones has since allayed any concerns over a possible injury by joining up with the England squad. After being assessed by the medical staff, reports suggest he has been passed fit to feature.

However, reports yesterday confirmed that he was one of four players who missed England’s latest training session as a precaution. Given that Spurs’ Kieran Trippier was also included in the quartet, it seems likely that these players’ are being managed in light of recent injury concerns rather than any new setbacks.

Already up to 5.1 in Fantasy Premier League, the former Blackburn Rovers man has been acquired by a further 39,000 since Saturday’s deadline passed as the most budget-friendly route into United’s resilient rearguard.

And his record alongside Eric Bailly shows just why. If you factor in last season and the summer friendlies, the Red Devils haven’t conceded in over 10 hours with the pair both on the pitch.

Indeed, with both centre-halves banned for the first Champions League match, Mourinho has confirmed that Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof will start together against FC Basel on September 12.

That match occurs three days after a Gameweek 4 trip to Stoke and five days prior to their Gameweek 5 home clash with Everton, suggesting that – providing he continues to steer clear of the treatment room – Jones looks in the box seat to retain his spot alongside Bailly for domestic duties at present.

Elsewhere, Spurs’ Victor Wanyama missed Sunday’s home draw against Burnley, with Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier utilised in central midfield once again.

Surprisingly, Mauricio Pochettino has yet to start with a wing-back formation this season. He rolled out 4-2-3-1 set-ups in Gameweeks 1 and 3 and opted for a 4-3-3 against Chelsea, with Wanyama the deepest of the central three behind Dembele and Dier.

Indeed, Dier has now been utilised in central midfield in all three fixtures, with the Chelsea encounter the only time that Wanyama has been fit enough to start.

However, the recent arrival of Davinson Sanchez could now see a change in tactics. The new boy played the last few minutes off the bench against the Clarets, but with Pochettino seemingly reluctant to play Dier in defence, Spurs could now operate with a three-man backline away to Everton next time out.

With Swansea, West Ham, Huddersfield and Bournemouth in the next five, their prospects of clean sheet returns could be on the rise, particularly if Wanyama can recover from a knee problem in time to feature at Goodison.

Meanwhile, Aaron Ramsey was replaced at the break in Arsenal’s loss at Anfield after sustaining a calf complaint.

He is set to miss a training session for Wales, but local press indicate this is no more than a precaution and that Ramsey is expected to recover to feature.

Although the Gunners’ back-to-back defeats at Stoke and Liverpool are hardly encouraging for would-be investors, the upcoming schedule affords them an immediate chance to build momentum again.

Arsene Wenger’s side host Bournemouth, West Brom, Brighton and Swansea in the next seven Gameweeks, which could yet bring them onto our radars.

Priced at just 7.0 and owned by only 3% of FPL managers, Ramsey’s form in front of his own fans also bodes well if he can avoid injury – he’s scored in each of Arsenal’s last two league matches at the Emirates.

Over the last 24 hours, Everton’s Jordan Pickford has withdrawn from the England squad to face Malta and Slovakia after sustaining a muscle problem. His Toffees’ team-mate Mason Holgate is out of the England U21 squad due to a minor ankle injury.

West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini has also withdrawn from Argentina duties due to a knee problem. Now down to 6.9, Lanzini was handed his first outing of the season off the bench against Newcastle United last weekend after recovering from a similar complaint.

It may be no more than a precaution by the Hammers as they look to bounce back from three successive losses. A potential setback for their playmaker could force a reassessment of their potential, however, as Slaven Bilic’s side prepare to host Huddersfield and Swansea in the next four Gameweeks.

Elsewhere, a handful of peripheral Fantasy figures are early concerns ahead of Gameweek 4. Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi, Bournemouth frontman Benik Afobe and Huddersfield wide man Rajiv Van la Parra, along with Palace and Watford defenders James Tomkins and Craig Cathcart, all picked up problems over the weekend.

In Recovery

Eden Hazard continued his recovery from an ankle injury with a run-out for the Chelsea reserves on Friday night. With Hazard yet to feature for the champions this term, Antonio Conte has allowed him to join up with Belgium in a bid to step up his match fitness:

“I had a conversation with Roberto Martinez, and I think now it could be positive for Eden to go with the national team and have the training sessions, and then maybe to have the possibility to play a part of the game with Gibraltar. He is the Belgium captain and the most important thing is to continue to work and improve and then after the international break, to have the possibility to have him on the bench and to start to think of him as a new player for Chelsea this season.”

Speaking to Chelsea TV, Hazard is hoping to earn pitch-time for Thursday’s home encounter against Gibraltar:

“I need time. Maybe not a lot, but I need a little bit of time. So, I’m ready to play. I just want to play. I miss football. I want to touch the ball and feel good. It can be good [to play against Gibraltar] just to feel the sensation [of playing] again. Just to play football. I just want play and have fun.”

Hazard’s absence has allowed Willian to start all three Gameweeks so far, but with just a single assist to his name, the Brazilian is already the third most transferred-out midfielder since the weekend. With the Belgian back in contention, his role now looks under real threat again.

And Hazard’s return will also force a reassessment of the best route into Conte’s attack.

Two goals and a pair of assists have earned Alvaro Morata substantial backing – he’s the second most acquired player since Saturday, with over 159,000 new owners. Yet Hazard’s spot-kick duties, allied with their very similar prices (10.5 to 10.1) may persuade many to overlook the summer signing for their three-man frontlines.

Bournemouth skipper Simon Francis could return after the break to hand manager Eddie Howe a defensive dilemma.

The Cherries boss moved to a wing-back formation at home to Manchester City last weekend, with Tyrone Mings at centre-half and Adam Smith and Charlie Daniels patrolling the flanks.

With a trip to Arsenal up next, Francis could oust Mings in the three-man defence, thus allowing Smith to retain his position on the right, with such a system now placing big question marks over the pitch-time of Ryan Fraser. The Scot had started 18 of the previous 22 league outings prior to dropping to the bench against City.

Florian Lejeune narrowly missed out on Newcastle’s weekend win over West Ham, having failed to recover from a hamstring problem. However, the Frenchman’s imminent return could be concerning for Chancel Mbemba’s raft of new owners.

Priced at 4.0, the latter is the second most transferred-in (82,000+) defender in the Gameweek after serving up nine points at home to the Hammers. Yet if Lejeune and/or Paul Dummett can prove their fitness in time for the trip to Swansea, there’s a chance that Mbemba – who was a sub in Gameweek 1 prior to the pair’s respective injuries against Spurs – could soon be back on the bench.

Fernando Llorente missed Swansea’s 2-0 win over Palace as he continues his rehabilitation from a fractured arm. In his pre-Gameweek 3 press conference, though, Paul Clement revealed that the Spaniard “will be ready” after the international break, potentially placing him in contention to host Newcastle next time out.

But with rumours growing of a switch to Chelsea, Llorente’s future could have a knock-on effect on our transfer plans.

If he stays, an upcoming run of five very favourable home matches in eight (NEW WAT HUD LEI BRI) could bring him into contention at 7.5 in the mid-price bracket.

Yet if Llorente does depart, strike duo Tammy Abraham and Jordan Ayew – at just 5.5 and 5.0 respectively – could now offer excellent value as cut-price picks if Clement continues with two up top. Indeed, the pair both opened their accounts for the campaign with a goal apiece away to Crystal Palace.

Over 39,000 FPL managers have already sold on Ruben Loftus-Cheek since the deadline passed, after the Palace midfielder missed the home loss to Swansea with a groin problem.

Loftus Cheek remains the most popular sub-5.0 midfielder, but his ownership has now dropped from 14% to 9% since he was ruled out last Friday.

With a further 38,0000 shipping team-mate Wilfried Zaha over the last few days, the Eagles’ run of three straight losses under Frank de Boer has sparked a collective loss of faith. Trips to Burnley and both Manchester clubs, allied with a visit from Chelsea in the next five, suggest the exodus will continue.

Would love it if journalists would realise that SWAP DEALS DON'T HAPPEN. They just don't. The rumours are a total waste of time.

It isn't a straight swap though. Agents would never allow them because then they don't get their fees.

how do you know what fees agents are charging clubs for facilitating the deals?

usually comes through as part of the fee itself I believe, which is why it's more likely that Palace would sign Gray, then Leicester would sign Townsend, than do a swap. Also wage structures etc, it just doesn't seem to happen.

          Difficult to decide.
Ive made a knee jerk reaction and swapped Kane for Morata and Hernandez for Firmino. Spurs have a hard Everton match which I don't see much in it for them.

Liverpool as free scoring and Salah's role is to only contribute in the final attacking third. A perfect FF player. But likely more subject to rotation than Mane.

I'd swap Poggsy to Salah, because Pogba isn't a goal scoring midfielder and Salah is. And in games that don't end in a rout Pogba wont be getting in to the box as much as Mhki

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Defence in a mess - what to do.

From a number of Rate My Teams I've seen over the last few days it is clear that some of our defences are in a bit of a mess.

Ake and Daniels show promise for baseline bonus and goals respectively but with awful fixtures can they justify their price tag?

Rotation has already started among City's backline for Stones owners

Jones is fit, or is he? There are now question marks there.

The Southampton centre backs are another area of concern - with Hoedt signed one of Stephens or Yoshida is set to make way - but which?

What problems do you have in defence and who do you have your eye on.

    Here's some solutions

Go Welsh - The swansea backline has some great fixtures and some good cheap options

Go full back at Southampton - avoid rotation by getting in Cedric or Bertrand

Think ahead - Leicester and Everton are on the cusp of good fixtures - perhaps make an early move?

Currently though - but for that to continue for you that relies on CS for Newcastle and Huddersfield in the medium term. Also worth noting that Goldson is about to go out on loan. Non playing already but he could perhaps do with an upgrade to a 4.5 to rotate with those others.

As a Newcastle fan, I'm not convinced he'll keep his place, dummett is the main one to watch out for, lejeune would probably slit in cb so not so much of a risk, yedlin could push manquillo to lb - all in all would be very surprised if he's playing every week in a month's time

Yep that will need to be wildcarded soon. Luiz not great fixt. Mbemba set to be benched again post international break. Rosenoir only back up for Bruno. Hegazi slight question mark.

There's an argument Daniels is fixture proof given the goal against City. In hindsight, I should have played him instead of Suttner and bank on attacking points should they concede. Will keep for now as they're due a CS.

I've also got Stephens and slightly worried he will be replaced by Hoedt (one of the reasons I didn't use a FT to replace Daniels last week). I'll look to get Cedric if that's the case.

He also was playing as a wing back versus City. If Howe persists with that formation that can only benefit Daniels....and Smith on the opposite flank. Swansea have also switched to 3-5-2, promoting Olsson and Naughton to wing backs.

Hoedt is by no means guarenteed to come into the saints backline, he was only a backup at Lazio and only played when De Vrij was injured or suspended. One to monitor.

A defender scoring a wonder gaol against City is just about the least likely thing possible to happen. Just because it did doesn't mean it was in any way likely to. Your decision to bench him was a sensible one.

I think we need more data to decide who to eye except for Swansea's Naughton, perhaps. Until then, I think we should just hold on to who we have. WBA had 2 clean sheets out of 3 at this time last season as well, but then went on to only get 4 more for the entire rest of the season. Huddersfield aren't conclusive either. So just keep who you have.

Stones is a problem, Stephens/Yoshida aren't a problem yet, Jones has to be monitored but unless they say he's injured we have nothing to worry about, and I think Daniels is well worth his value if he's used as a rotation defender.

On Kolasinac, Bertrand, Stephens, Francis, Naughton at present, and have been since the start.

Very happy with it so far! Will be interesting to see where Francis plays on his return from injury, he may slot in as one of the 3 centre backs if Howe persists with 3-5-2. It would be amazing if he became a wing back, but thats wishful thinking probably. Happy with him just being a regular starter 🙂

Naughton has been amazing, far exceeding my expectations. Him now being a wing back is gold, and Swansea have kept 2 clean sheets too, indicating some resilience in the easier fixtures.

Stephens and Bertrand double up has served me well so far, happy with both of these up until GW11 barring injures and loss of form.

Kolasinac the only one I'm monitoring. Nice run of fixtures coming up, but Arsenal are cack. However his competition at wing back is most likely to be sold, which could nail him on at LWB. His stock has also surely gone up by not being associated with that non performance at Anfield!

      Currently on:

Thinking of doing Ake > Naughton and then Valencia to Jones, although his fitness concerns me. Kinda wish I'd gone Cedric over Bertrand for that 0.5m, but was worried about him starting GW1.

my defence has done me well this season - Bavies, Stephens & Hegazi = 57pts but all 3 could be under threat from returning players or new signings. (bench Mee & Dummett)
Want to avoid a WC as doing well (66k) but an injury or 2 mids/forwards in international break could force me into one.
Hate the idea of a WC being forced by defensive issues.

most defensive goals are lucky in FPL terms - bailly owners crowing about his but it was his 1st ever career goal.
          Non-set piece defenders might 2 or 3 a session if you're lucky.

Ideal defense in 2 or 3 games is, imo,

Maguire - Keane (or Holgate to save money if he keeps starting) - Cédric - Naughton - cheapie (4.0 or 4.5 max) like Mee. Maybe VVD for one of the 4.5 if he actually looks likely to start, whatever club he is at then.

Short term (up to 6 game weeks):
      - West Brom (Hegazi - there's no way Pulis would shoehorn Macauley back in without good reason)
      - Huddersfield (Lossl / Suttner) had shown they can defend, and don't have a difficult fixture until Spurs in GW7. Even then, followed with Swansea.
      - speaking of which: Swans have a trip to Wembley but excellent fixtures otherwise. And their Man U mauling aside, they look like having points potential, even at 5.0m.

Misjudged faith in Bournemouth (Ake) and lack of MNU coverage has cost me a fair few points.
With Ake away to drop I think I will take a -4 to get in Jones before i'm priced out.
Happy with the rest of my defence - Alonso, Bertrand, Suttner and Mee. However, if I wasn't happy with my 4.5s I'd be all over Kyle Naughton.

      Pretty happy for now :

Forster. Bertrand. Dawson. Kolasinac. Dunk. Long

Monitoring Kola as a downgrade if he continues not to play. Although the ox leaving should free up the right wing back spot for Bellerin, this allowing Kola to inherit his rightful left wing back throne.

      Here is my WC defense:

      Bailly Jones Naughton Maguire Hegazi

Which coincidentally is covering all the above concerns:

      1) I had Daniels - I am selling him
      2) Not going for Stones
      3) Doubling up united defense in case of rotation/injury
      4) No Southampton defender - might get Forster instead

Who is, in your opinion, to blame for Arsenal's lack of form?
    A) the gaffer
    B) the players
    C) the fans
    D) bad luck

Would be interesting to know what you guys think. My mates almost unanimously pointed at Arsene.

He isn't clueless but he is also never willing to compromise. Sometimes you need to play negatively and drop certain players rather than shoehorning them in.also playing players in unfamiliar positions doesn't help. Partly the players because regardless of morale or tactics you need to give your all for the club and some clearly aren't willing to do that.

The amount of price rises this season has been a bit pathetic. Richarlison has been over 100 going into the 2am "deadline" for about a week now only for it change its parameters and go back down to 97-98, the amount of transfers he has had in, regardless of wildcard transfers, would mean he'd be looking at his second ruse by the deadline for sure. What has changed? It's a fundamental part of the game and we have little to no information on this

The price rise and falls are a fundamental part of the game but the mechanics behind them are not. I've said many times before, it's a part of the game that - for now - will remain unexplained and concealed so that the levers can be tweaked to keep the rise and falls in check.

If ISM have decided there needs to be fewer price changes, they're allowed to change it. That's why we are not informed on the mechanics. If we were, they'd have little or no freedom to tweak.

I don't necessarily agree with this. For me, it's perhaps time to have some transparency on rise and falls and perhaps even the workings that govern them. But not my call.

        Thanks for replying:

I completely understand on the mechanics side of it. If they were to say exactly how they work then yeah no freedom to tweak, but

Any information whatsoever on the price rises and falls would be a bonus, not the mechanics behind it. It's all about transparency like you said as players are making big decision's on transfers because of imminert price drops/rises (Zaha for e.g) then to find they survive for a few more days and we could have had more information to hand.

How Kane hasn't fallen yet is beyond me. The inner conspiracy theorist in me thinks that this may be part of a scheme to keep the best players happy as the majority of them still own Kane whereas casuals are likely selying him in droves. But Lukaku has already risen by £0.2? Well anyone that matters owns him don't they? Hmmmm...

hi Gregg, i guess that Lukaku got bought in with a free or paid transfer over the last weeks and started rising in value but with Kane everyone was still hoping he is coming good and with an drop in Overall ranking for the majority of players due to Kane's performance used they wildcards to let Kane go .....and wildcards don't influence the rise or fall of value.....well that's just my idea why Kane is still 12.5....

Not really. The marketing exercise is to build interest and involvement in the PL around the world. That interest and involvement leads to bigger and better TV deals. Which in turn leads to more money.

If the players of FPL don't like it and/or lose interest in it, it fails as a marketing exercise. Which means that having happy managers is the name of the game.

He's gone from 97% certain of a drop to 85% today....which suggests he's either been reset or his exodus has stalled.
Either way multiple rises and drops are very rare in the first international break. If he falls it'll be 0.1 max.

Yeah, I think that's more likely - the tool is reconfiguring. His net transfers are still declining - he's lost 8,638 owners in the last 24 hours but I'm not sure how many of those are on WC - he's still second only to KDB for sales in that period.

I still predict just one drop, though if he blanks at Everton, another will likely follow very quickly.

yeah, definitely still declining and can't really argue with that re: an Everton blank - although once again, he has a plum GW5 fixture which could make people hold. It will be interesting to see if his England performance has an effect.

Players are making decisions based on sites like FISO and FPLstatistics. These sites state that they do not fully understand how the rise/fall works.

There is no reason at all for FPL to provide information about how their mechanism works. And if they did then it would just detract from the game as picking and choosing transfers regarding transfer value would become even easier. It would make the game worse, not better.

The fact that they do not give their algorithm away generates more traffic surrounding their game with an eco-system evolving to try and figure it out. It engages more people in spending more time thinking about FPL that otherwise would be the case. It also keeps the element of luck that was there before some one first decided to crack the code and tell everyone else about it. This luck element within the game framework is a very important part of FPL playability.

Since I started playing FPL a few seasons ago I've always found this strange. Strange in that most people seem to be content with the 'secrecy' behind the price change system. My argument is that price changes are an important part of the game, just as important as bonus points for example. Would people be as accommodating to the bonus points being issued using a 'secret' formula?

Wasn't everyone moaning that they were too volatile last season though? I seem to remember there being a discussion on one of the scoutcasts after Coutinho got injured against Southampton last season, and he fell 0.3 in 3 days. At that point there were a hell of a lot of people saying the price changes needed to be slowed down. Maybe FPL have responded to that criticism?

It's a guided system meant to bring balance to a part of the game that creates difficulty and adds an extra dimension. A reason Kane has not fallen in price is because he brings balance to the game. The most prolific scorers are always over priced to add an element of thinking to the game. In the last 15 days Kane has only dropped a NET ~200,000 from a starting point of ~1,500,000. It has all been nibbled away without any large drops. If each 30,000 drop were to create a 0.1 drop, he'd be down to about 12.1 by now. This then makes the statistically best asset under priced for the game. By controlling the price fluctuations for the most owned players FPL keeps the whole game stable.

(If each 30,000 drop were to create a 0.1 drop, he'd be down to about 12.1 by now) based loosely on 0.1, 0.2 =x2, 0.3=x3

But the perceived wisdom is that each drop needs ~10% of owners to ship. So for 1.5M owners at the start he needs to lose 150k for his first drop. Not including wildcards.

Sorry, yes, I forgot to clarify that. I assumed those talking about this know that and was just flipping it around to show why there are different calculations for price rises and falls. I think it's designed very cleverly to allow for an active stock market with controls in place to stop wild shifts that would end up unbalancing the whole game.

The opposite of the 12.5m player is the 4.0m enabler. There are many of them in comparison and are each owned by so few players that a small number of sellers constitutes a 10% fall in ownership and a fall in value. This is a clever way of increasing the difficulty too as players are encouraged to buy the 4.5 and 5.0 options, thus reducing the funds available.

The speed of price changes is irrelevant to me. What I like in any gaming environment is consistency - which we have been sorely lacking over the last couple of years. Consistency between seasons is ideal. However right now FPL don't even seem to care about consistency within the same game week. Bonkers imo.

are we sure that mechanics has changed?

situation you described can be explained by people transferring Richarlison in and in a few hours/days deciding to activate their WC.

In that case his "transfer in" count would be cancelled.

A lot of wild cards are being played at the beginning of the season and the strange things we noticed affect mainly the "template" players, which go in almost every wildcard team.

I may be wrong of course.

Make all risers and fallers occur on the day before the gameweek only (e.g sat morning 02:15am). If they have had enough to rise/fall 0.2m/0.3m then allow that to happen in the same day. No one would need to rush about worrying about injuries or catching early risers, making informed, safe decisions.

Most people transferring between last Sunday and the next week or so will be on wildcards and so they won't affect price changes.

Anyone not on a wildcard has either done a quick rage transfer on Sunday or is waiting until after IB for any injuries which is the sensible thing to do.

If Kane scores a few for England this week I could see him being transferred in by some rather than out and he might not drop at all.

As the weeks progress and less wildcards are in play then the price changes become more sensitive.

IMO, I don't think any large-scale game that involves a soft salary cap should include some executive level judgment at any point in time. For the integrity of the game, by definition, market prices, which impact all players and fantasy managers, should be solely based on an clearly communicated algorithm, with our without any maximums (e.g. max 0.3 rise or drop per gw). If properly communicated, the algorithm can even be adjusted mid-season, if it is determined by the overlords that price changes are seemingly too volatile or too minimal -- as long as the change is to the algorithm, not individual players. As Mark says, this should all be transparent at the outset of the season, and if any changes to the algorithm are made mid-stream. If some executive judgment is exercised, then individuals can legitimately complain that such decisions were arbitrary, inconsistent, etc. This results in a hit to the integrity of the game.

I've played the game for a number of seasons and have always found FPL Statistics to be reasonably reliable. This season there has definitely been a change to the algorithm as numerous players on FPL Stats have been set to rise/fall only to be reset in the morning and remain the same. However this does not apply to all players (e.g. Jesus who dropped immediately) whose price drop conformed to last season's parameters. This would indicate an imbalanced weighting system to some players values this year and seems unfair. Most experienced players would expect a high owned expensive player who blanked for 3 weeks in a row to drop, but still Kane remains the same price. Expecting a 0.2/0.3m drop, a lot of wildcards have been activated (again probably based on last season's price changes). All of this seems unfair.

I don't understand FPL wanting to keep control of when and how players rise/fall. In my view the game would be better and fairer if each player knew when a player would go up or down and for FPL to publish a live table showing this information so that all managers can make informed decisions. Even if they want to be able to manipulate the algorithm for each player based on their whims, why not have a list of risers/fallers available to see each day before a know deadline for rises/falls? Surely this is another excuse for people to visit the website and eat their marketing message?

TV is an important aspect and last season my patience in making late transfers cost me £1-2m when it came to the double game weeks. The lack of information about rises/falls this season is making the market worse as people are forced into making unnecessary moves as they are mislead by once reliable sources for price data and making moves based on incorrect information.

The system at the moment is like having the stock market controlled by the government where buyers/sellers of stock cannot predict with any certainty whether real world events will have an impact on price. If players blank, they get sold in droves and if this happens the price should fall. Equally if a player hauls, he gets bought and his price goes up. Sort it out FPL!

Transparancy would just make it fair for everyone. Some people would still ignore it and do their transfers on a Friday night the same as always anyway.
One thing that bothers me is that they are allowed to take place in the middle of a game week. They should only be allowed when the last game has finished and before the first one has started it would make price changes occur over just a few days aswell.

The non-transparency just adds another unknown element to the game. It just means you have to be more skilled (e.g. in detecting that risers are slower this year) in order to beat other people. I don't see any problems with it.

I prefer it like this - it levels the playing field. If you know which players are going to fall/rise every day you gain an advantage over people who can't/won't check it everyday. It becomes a game of who plays it the most rather than who is the best at picking a team. There should be a risk for people acting on market forces rather than just points potential, people that wildcarded this week are already panicking and I like it 😉

Sorry YMA, but it is quite possible for Richarlison to have not had enough effective transfers for one rise, let alone two.

I doubt there's anything sinister going on. The price change parameters have clearly been changed but this happens every season. It's entirely possible that they might speed up as the season goes on if FPL have introduced a change to the algorithm to compensate for dead teams. This would make sense as otherwise jumping on early bandwagons is too obvious a strategy.

Kane probably hasn't dropped simply because so many of the people transferring him out are on wildcards. This is made all the more likely when you consider that if you remove him you are going to have a lot of dead money in the kitty. Kane > Firminho leaves you with a balance of +3.9M (+4.0M at the start of the week). Leaving that unused for a GW is the equivalent of a whole season's worth of a 0.1M drop or a 0.2M rise.

All the wildcards will affect it

Does seem a touch slower this year which is nice though

I WC first international break last year and only got a couple of increases so maybe not that different in reality, remember being surprised it was so few

It was this that led me to want to keep me Wc for a bit later this year and get the price rises from others that had played a WC and then forced into hits, therefore actually moving prices.

Big fixture shifts this year later

I know he doesn't like the wing back role. You could see that from his interview after the FA Cup win. I didn't think WIjnaldum would be a starter this season and then Lallana got injured. He might think that if he gets a couple of games then he might impress and get a run in the side.

Wij is a bedrock of Liverpool, without his presence in midfield Liverpool would struggle imo.

Personally, I don't think Ox is making a good decision. I do think he will struggle to nail a spot unless he is aware and sacrificing his first season there.

If Coutinho stays and plays in midfield, that leaves 2 spots for WIjnaldum, Lallana, and Henderson. I would say that Can definitely plays ahead of Wij

Chamberlain should have left a while ago. Arsenal just keep lots of players, never play them consistently, and they never fulfil their "potential".

Look at Welbeck. Obviously a centre forward. Man Utd shoe-horned him in to the attacking wide role as clubs tried to ape Madrid and Barca 4-3-3. But he doesn't have the skill set of a wide forward. Then he went to Arsenal with the explicit promise of playing centre forward. Low and behold he is farmed out to the wing role again while Walcott is indulged in a fantasy that he can play centre forward. Even Sanchez was played as a centre forward, a role which he clearly failed in when required to do anything except dribble the ball.

Now Wenger thinks Ox can play centre midfield? A position only the best players who understand the whole game can play well. It's all nonsense at Arsenal. Ox would do well to move to Chelsea with a manager who has a clear vision of how to structure a team.

I'm on a wildcard and my debate isn't whether to include Kane, but instead whether to include Lukaku. I feel Kane definitely will explode very soon so for me he is in the squad. However Lukaku's penalty miss and success of Mkhit and Pogba has got me looking at teams without him, and the funds freed up allow for Alonso plus an extra premium mid (Salah) with perhaps Rooney taking Lukaku's striker spot. Anyone else looking along similar lines? I certainly think it's riskier going Kane-less than going Lukaku-less.

If Lukaku gets assists mostly from Mhki and Poggsy, but Kane is the number one nailed on centre forward in your opinion, AND coupled with the Spurs mids being £1.5m more than the Man Utd mids... It makes sense to Double up Man Utd mids and Captain Kane. Then bring in players to cover Liverpool and Chelsea to taste.

It really boils down to a choice between something like

Alonso is a big factor in this. Kicking myself I left him out my initial squad. 7m for a Chelsea attacking midfielder who gets clean sheet points. Need to get him in there so something has to give.

B being way better is exactly how I see it currently. When you look at what you can do with the money Kaku-less gives you, it's hard to reassemble your squad with him in it again and see it as better. Yes there's the potential he'll punish, but ultimately we all have to take some risks sometime to get ahead.

Thing with Kane is this is nothing new. He does this every year and if you accept the pattern then logic dictates now is the time to bring him in and not the time to sell him as hard as that looks at face value.

            1. MTPockets
                6 years, 8 months ago

Possibly, but I'm not allocating 1/8 budget to him again until he starts justifying it.
That could of course be next gw.

There's logic in that. My feeling though is I'd be hugely surprised if I don't want him within the next 2 weeks so getting him now saves restructuring. Like I say, he does this every year.

I'm happy to lose one/two week's returns if the £ can be allocated efficiently and reversibly elsewhere.
It's ownership that worries me, not finding others who can also score points in competition.

Fair play, I think the crucial thing is having a plan with any of these two in terms of how to acquire them short notice. I actually took Kane out GW2, regretted it instantly, hence the WC. Makes it very nerve-wracking, knowing he can and will start banging in hatricks and braces for fun at any moment. Lukaku just doesn't worry me in that same way, perhaps I'm underestimating him a bit to suit my own ends there.

                            I think it's important to keep assessing points per £ allocation. For example (ignoring captaincy) T.Carrol @ 4.5m & total 8 trumps Lukaku @ 11.5 & total 19.

Kane & Spurs stats are very good, but could also argue they're too good in absolute and relative terms. One's best arguing just bad luck, as relying on extrapolating statistical outperformance doesn't seem that logical.

No doubt I'll be eating my words soon though.

Shall i swap now before the int. break and risk injuries?

Was thinking – KDB for salah or mane….. Or perhaps Abraham for Firminio, KDB for Salah and then Ramsey for a sub 5mn midfielder (4 point hit).

              TEAM:
              De Gea

              Alderwield Stephens Mee

              Ramsey Pogba KDB Willian

              Abrhama Kane Lukaku

              Elliot – Carroll / Dawson / Rosenior

thanks mate. I appreciate the response. i'll wait it out. I have just noticed that arsenal and swansea have good ficture so will leave abraham for now and get in a liverpool midfielder for KDB and carry over the 1 Ft

I would wait until another price drop/rise is imminent on KDB and Salah/Mane respectively to make any changes. Though if you do want to make a transfer, I would just get rid of KDB and hold the other till after the transfer window closes and the internationals are done. You can then take stock and possibly take a -4

Due to international break boredness, I’ve just created my UCL Fantasy Team.

              Thoughts?
              Any obvious bargains this year?

              K.Navas (REA) – Areola (PSG)
Azpilicueta (CHE) – P.Jones (MUN) – Ghoulam (NAP) – Lenglet (SEV) – Vasin (CSKA)
Mkhitaryan (MUN) – Pulisic (BVB) – Sahin (BVB) – Casemiro (REA) – E.Can (LIV)
Ronaldo (REA) – Neymar (PSG) - Jonas (BEN)

              thx

              KDB Mkhi Ritchie Redmond Puncheon
              Kane Lukaku JRod

If you want to replace more than 2 players, then yes. I would.

I disagree, I would only wildcard if I wanted to change at least 4+ players.

They wouldn't sell him without signing a replacement but if they somehow did, it'd be between Joselu and Mitrovic.

How crucial is it for you that a 10m+ player is on pens? Surely if Morata is banging in the goals like Costa did, it doesn't matter if he's not taking them.

it doesn't matter to me at all , especially if they are not great at taking them in the first place like with Aguero and Lukaku
