Moving Target – Kevin Wimmer

Earlier this week, Stoke City made their seventh signing of the summer with the acquisition of centre-half Kevin Wimmer from Tottenham Hotspur for a reported £18m.

The Austrian international arrives at the bet365 Stadium on a five-year contract as manager Mark Hughes looks to strengthen his defence for the campaign ahead:

“Bringing Kevin here is a real coup in my view, because he is a hugely talented young player who will undoubtedly add further quality to the group. We have already brought Kurt (Zouma) into the Club and managed to get Bruno (Martins Indi) back on a permanent deal, which was important to us, and we have Ryan (Shawcross) here too. Obviously, this deal was with a view to the future because we know that Kurt is a Chelsea player, but Kevin is our player now and we knew that this deal wouldn’t have been available to us this time next year.”

Discussing his move with the club’s official website, the 24-year-old is desperate to cement a regular role after falling out of favour at Spurs:

“At every top Premier League football club there are groups of players in every position chasing those starting spots, and that is the case here, I know I will have to work hard and keep on improving to be successful…First and foremost I am here to help defend, but I am confident with the ball at my feet and I like to get the ball forward with accurate passes through the middle or up to the guys at the top end of the field.”

The History

A product of the youth system at Austrian outfit LASK Linz, Wimmer progressed through the reserves before making his senior debut in 2011/12.

Four goals and 28 league matches later, he was snapped up by then-German second division side FC Cologne in Aug 2012.

Wimmer produced two goals and a pair of assists in 35 league matches over the next two seasons, helping them clinch promotion to the Bundesliga ahead of the 2014/15 campaign. The centre-half featured 32 times that season and caught the eye of Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, who snapped him up in late May of 2015.

Yet Wimmer’s move to north London was more than a little underwhelming, with just 15 league appearances over his two seasons at the club.

On the international stage, he was handed a debut for Austria in 2013 and has since been selected on eight occasions.

The Prospects

Having fallen out of favour at Spurs, the switch to the Potteries allows Wimmer the chance to kick-start his career.

It now looks on the cards that Hughes is planning to keep faith in the 3-4-2-1 set-up utilised over the opening three rounds of fixtures.

Yet there’s still competition for places, with Kurt Zouma, Bruno Martins-Indi, skipper Ryan Shawcross and Geoff Cameron also vying for pitch time in the heart of defence.

With Zouma at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and Shawcross, Martins-Indi and Erik Pieters all costing 5.0, we’re hoping that Wimmer – who sets you back 4.4 in FPL (7.6 in Sky Sports) – can cement a spot and emerge as the cheapest nailed-on starter available for our five-man defences.

Yet in terms of minutes per Baseline Bonus Points System in 2016/17, his average of 12.3 minutes was well behind Zouma (3.7), Martins-Indi (6.0) and Shawcross (7.6).

You could argue, though, that this was in part to featuring alongside and Toby Alderweireld (5.2) and Jan Vertonghen (6.0) for Spurs.

Over the course of the previous two seasons, Wimmer has won a combined 60.7% of aerial duels and 66.7% of tackles.

Again, Zouma (71.1% and 84.4%) and Shawcross (64% and 74%) are better on both counts, and while Martins-Indi was superior for tackles (79.2%) in his first season at Stoke in 2016/17, he won just 48.3% of his headed duels. So far this term, he’s succeeded with 57.1%, which highlights an area of improvement for Hughes to consider.

Elsewhere, Hughes’ switch to a wing-back system could bring Cameron into the frame. Shifted from centre-half to right wing-back to accommodate Martins-Indi away to West Brom last weekend, the US international – at a price of just 4.5 – is clearly one to monitor if he can keep ahead of Mame Biram Diouf in the pecking order. The Senegalese was sidelined through injury for The Hawthorns visit.

In terms of goal threat, Wimmer has been less than impressive since arriving at Spurs. Having managed just a single attempt on goal in 1,168 minutes over the last two seasons, it’s likely that even if he nails down a starting role, you’ll be hard pushed to earn attacking returns from the Austrian.

Ultimately, if you are looking for goals from the Potters’ backline, Shawcross remains the best bet if you’re willing to splash out more – he registered 20 efforts in the box last year. Zouma’s four shots against West Brom show promise but few will be prepared to fork out a premium price for a Stoke defender.

While a clean sheet at home to Arsenal in Gameweek 2 is encouraging, clashes against Man United, Chelsea and Man City in the next five rounds of fixtures is enough of a deterrent for now until the schedule turns from Gameweek 9.

7m for a midfielder who gets full clean sheet points? Seems pretty reasonable to me.

Strongly agree, he could hit 190+ points imo. And Jesus that's better value than any midfielder at that price.

Alonso had 177 in 2700 minutes last year. At that pace, he'd only need to play ~2900 minutes to hit 190. Chelsea might not keep as many clean sheets without Matic, but it's not like 190 is ludicrous.

If they don't keep as many clean sheets, his points will be lower. He has to score and assist more to cope then. He's playing in the same position as last season at LWB (not a midfielder). So I don't see any reason why we should expect more goals/assists this early.

And not only do they not have Matic, but they have CL this season.

The amount of CS Chelsea got last year is not out of the ordinary. Conte had more CS with Juventus every single season. There's also 8 teams in the last 5 seasons of PL that has had more CS than Chelsea did last year. Two of them are Manchester United and Tottenham in the exact same season.

I didn't say they'd keep fewer clean sheets. The other guy did. But it's still too early to predict 190+.

I said "might" not would. And my point was that if he has the same production as last year and plays a few more minutes, he'll break 190. Assuming good health, the most likely reason he doesn't IMO is less clean sheet points because he looks every bit as threatening going forward.

Irrelevant because he's classified as a defender in FPL. Only the points matter, whether they come in the form of goals, assists, clean sheets or baps. So what difference does it make what he plays LIKE?

Whether he plays like a defender, mid or striker is irrelevant in this game. All that matters is his FPL classification and how many points he gets.

He gets far forward and will outscore all other 7m mids. And David Luiz stays back and will also outscore all other 6m mids. Almost all defenders outscore mids of their identical price. So what significance does calling Alonso a mid have? Should we call David Luiz a mid too then? All that matters is how many points they get.

Well I'm sure you're not getting the point.

                        1. In theory, a wing-back is a defender, not a midfielder. This is in real life as well as FPL.

                        2. He doesn't get points for 'playing far forward' or 'playing like a mid'. Only for goals, assists, clean sheets and baps. So 'playing like a mid' is irrelevant.

                        3. He will outscore 7m mids but almost all defenders do in the same respect. I've already explained that.

                        4. Nobody called him a mid last season and he's playing in the same position this season. He's not been shifted to LF.

In conclusion, he's a defender. If you still don't get it, you're dumb.

Playing like a midfielder is relevant as it indicates a higher potential for attcaking returns than you would normally expect from a defender. That's why I described him as a midfielder who get full clean sheet points, as a turn of phrase to emphasise the extra attacking returns he is likely to get.

People did call him a midfielder last season, or rather alluded to the fact that his playing style essentially meant he had the attacking potential of a midfielder. It was repeatedly alluded to on the scoutcast, for example.

If defenders generally outscore midfielders at that price point then it only further highlights what a good pick Alonso is given he *also* has that higher potential for attacking returns that most defenders don't.

As for me being dumb, you're the one who has failed to grasp a rather simple point that absolutely nobody else seems to have a problem understanding.

"If defenders generally outscore midfielders at that price point then it only further highlights what a good pick Alonso is given he *also* has that higher potential for attacking returns that most defenders don't".

And that is why he is priced HIGHER than those defenders. So he's not a value pick or something that requires special attention or someone that's essential. He's just as good a pick for 7m as David Luiz is for 6m. He will outscore 7m mids, and Luiz will outscore 6m mids in the same way.

So my question is, what weight does him 'playing like a mid' or 'playing far forward' or 'having attacking potential' hold in FPL? Why are we bringing that as an argument to justify picking him? His price already reflects that advantage. The game doesn't award him points for bombing forward.

You calling him a 7m mid is only justifiable if he has the same attacking potential as 7m mids. And no, he's not going to score more goals and assists than a 7m mid say, Zaha.

So you shouldn't be calling him a 7m mid that gets clean sheet points. Rather, a 6m defender that has extra attacking potential (for 1m more). That is all.

And LOL, "absolutely nobody else seems to have a problem understanding". How would you know that? For all you know, there might be plenty others who laughed at you for calling him a mid. I'm the only one posting so far.

I think instead of "not wanting to go to Arsenal" the factor could be that he can't leave the national team before the match. There was a strict rule imposed by the coach that no player can take a leave from the team to sign contracts or take medicals or anything transfer related. It's also fair play, because they have a must win match against the Netherlands, and he needs his players to focus on that.

Offer him £500k a week wages, he'll accept, you'll still wind up saving money compared to £60 million plus his usual wage.

Don't you think 60m for a proven PL top scorer is actually a steal in today's market? Ox for 40mil, Siggy 45m and Walker 50m!

Yeah that could be the only "logical" explanation. Still surprised that other clubs in the PL aren't trying to force the issue. Same was said of Kaku to Chelsea and his relationship with Mourinho at the start of the season but we all know how it went after all.

      Fabianski/Foster, Elliot
      Hegazi, Jones, Naughton, Wimmer, Mbemba
      Sanchez, Mikhitaryan, Pogba, Salah, Brady
      Kane, Firmino, Calvert-Lewin

Brady could be Carroll and the 1M spent upgrading defence (possibly Mbemba > 5.0 such as Cedric...or Salah could be Mane and Brady > Renato-Sanches maybe...thoughts?
