SUPERIOR BEING SUPERIOR BEING
Share:

In a season where the same group of Fantasy Players seem to be scoring heavily in the points, the quest for a differential becomes more like searching for the proverbial pot of gold.

I find myself trailing in my mini league to a leader who owns the big-hitting Ashley Cole, Carlos Tevez, Nani etc, etc, so I reckoned my decision to stick with Mikel Arteta was a good (albeit hopeful) one. The Spaniard certainly helped me to mini league glory last season anyway.

But after a below-par Fantasy Season so far, what has happened to Mikel Arteta? I decided to look at the stats to find out:

Last season, Arteta played 1033 minutes in the league. This season, he has played 1041, so this makes for a fairly straightforward comparison.

SeasonGoalsAssistsBonus
2010-112012
2009-106217

Quite a significant difference then, let’s see what the OPTA stats show …

SeasonTouchesSucc Pass Opp HalfGoal AttemptsOn TargetPenalties ScoredEverton Goals
2010-111024 45812 5 013
2009-101094 4841612 225

Notice Arteta is touching the ball and making Successful Passes in the Opponents Half just as much as he did last season. However, it’s his shooting that is really letting the playmaker down; last season 75% of Goal Attempts were on target whereas only 42% have been this season.

Arteta cannot be blamed for this dip in form alone, though; as a team, Everton are contributing to his Fantasy demise, too. Not only have David Moyes’ side not been awarded any penalties for Arteta to benefit from, they are also not scoring as many goals. In the 12 games Arteta has played this season, Everton have scored 13 goals, whereas in the 13 games Arteta played last season, Everton scored 25. Now if you take away the 2 penalties scored you will see Arteta was responsible for 17% of outfield goals last season which is very similar to the 15% he has achieved this season. This indicates that when Everton do finally start scoring with more regularity, Mikel Arteta may, indeed, be that pot of gold many of us are searching for.

SUPERIOR BEING SUPERIOR BEING thinks the world is just one huge maths puzzle waiting to be solved.

Arteta was pretty poor on Sunday I noticed having watched the game eightenn times since. Crowd were groaning a bit when he gave it away and then Moyes whipped him off- both very rare events at Goodison...I'm still going to play him ahead of Bale this weekend though

I am amazed at the number of people who are considering transferring in Rooney before he has played a game! Yes, he was wondrous last season, but crap for the past 6 months.

Perhaps you believe the Good Fairy came down and bestowed countless future goals on him. Of course, if you believe in fairies, it makes sense that you believe that Rooney is a lock to score a hat trick this weekend.

Agreed. Its pretty much the same thing every time Torres comes back from injury. His first week back, people captain him and wonder how in the world he only brought in 2 points. Madness.

People are just so sick of Drogba they are looking for any way out possible.

i think everyone realises the risk involved

it just depends if you are risk preferring or not.

The fact is that berbatov and hernandez havent been doing the business, that rooney IS one of the best strikers in the world at the moment, that he just signed a new contract, that the crowd will back him,

if he plays, he will score IMO

    B. Arteta to Nani (no hit)

Trying to convince us or yourself on that one?

Funny thinking back to the pre-season RMTs when Arteta (at a whopping 8.5) was a must have on everyone's team.

Remember some of the other 'must-haves':

    - M Petrov
    - Keane (if he went to Villa)
    - Boselli
    - Lamps
    - J Evans
    - Matt Dawson
    - Dorrans
    - RvP
    - Shawcross
    - Etherington, N'Zogs (although still not a bad picks after slow starts)

Other popular picks included Zigic, Baptiste, Joe Cole, N'Gog, Tuncay, F Campbell, Figueroa, Van Damme

On the positive side, great successes from the start include Adam, Carroll, El-Mummy (until a week ago), Nolan and Bale

Be interesting to see an article looking at the trends in player ownership from the start to mid-season...

That's a painful reminder for many.

Glad I never bought into the Boselli, Keane, Shawcross, Dorrans wagons.

I did have Valencia, Arteta, M. Petrov, Evans and Arshavin though..

I was very close to having Lampard, but a last minute injury doubt helped me out a ton by giving me Drogs(c).

        Valencia, Petrov, Bilyaletdinov, Lamps
