SUPERIOR BEING SUPERIOR BEING
Share:

In a season where the same group of Fantasy Players seem to be scoring heavily in the points, the quest for a differential becomes more like searching for the proverbial pot of gold.

I find myself trailing in my mini league to a leader who owns the big-hitting Ashley Cole, Carlos Tevez, Nani etc, etc, so I reckoned my decision to stick with Mikel Arteta was a good (albeit hopeful) one. The Spaniard certainly helped me to mini league glory last season anyway.

But after a below-par Fantasy Season so far, what has happened to Mikel Arteta? I decided to look at the stats to find out:

Last season, Arteta played 1033 minutes in the league. This season, he has played 1041, so this makes for a fairly straightforward comparison.

SeasonGoalsAssistsBonus
2010-112012
2009-106217

Quite a significant difference then, let’s see what the OPTA stats show …

SeasonTouchesSucc Pass Opp HalfGoal AttemptsOn TargetPenalties ScoredEverton Goals
2010-111024 45812 5 013
2009-101094 4841612 225

Notice Arteta is touching the ball and making Successful Passes in the Opponents Half just as much as he did last season. However, it’s his shooting that is really letting the playmaker down; last season 75% of Goal Attempts were on target whereas only 42% have been this season.

Arteta cannot be blamed for this dip in form alone, though; as a team, Everton are contributing to his Fantasy demise, too. Not only have David Moyes’ side not been awarded any penalties for Arteta to benefit from, they are also not scoring as many goals. In the 12 games Arteta has played this season, Everton have scored 13 goals, whereas in the 13 games Arteta played last season, Everton scored 25. Now if you take away the 2 penalties scored you will see Arteta was responsible for 17% of outfield goals last season which is very similar to the 15% he has achieved this season. This indicates that when Everton do finally start scoring with more regularity, Mikel Arteta may, indeed, be that pot of gold many of us are searching for.

SUPERIOR BEING SUPERIOR BEING thinks the world is just one huge maths puzzle waiting to be solved.

      Do it now!

Why are people so averse to making transfers early?! There are no more matches between now and the weekend, so any injuries are highly unlikely.

I'm wildcarding too. Interesting that you are keeping Elmo (and that he is the only one you're keeping). I don't want to risk it.

Decent looking side with good balance. Brunt appears to be injured so that would be a risk and you've got a lot of Newcastle. Brave with no Chelsea coverage. I'm sticking with Drogs but I've had him from the beginning.

Why are people averse to Gyan?

He's on form, Sunderland have good fixtures, the team's on form, and he's undroppable at the moment.

There's no reason why he can't keep it up.

Thanks again. My problem with Elmander/Davies is I don't know which one I want. Gyan is definitely a risk but I like the way he plays and it might pay off.

Samba is the one I thought of as an alternative to Konchesky too. Don't want a Sunderland defender as I already have the keeper.

Lee was also in my thoughts for Bolton coverage. Nice option owned by few. Brunt could be injured. Jarvis is also a decent idea.

      Don't like it much.

      Berbatov isn't the best choice.

No Chelsea is also too risky. They are the champions, and all it takes is one really good game this weekend where they stuff Birmingham 4-0 and all of a sudden, everyone wants in again. Don't get drawn in by current form.

Goalkeepers could be better for the coming run, defense needs tidying. Elmo and Dann should probably be replaced. Midfield, you've given yourself a really tough choice of who to bench every week. Nolan and Brunt, choose one, and drop the other for a 4.3 mid. Up front, replace Berbatov with Torres at the very least, or downgrade to Gyan and use the funds on a better defense.

      There's tons to improve on.

          Ferguson or Emerton.

You could even go for De Jong and save the 0.1. Up to you. Remember that this fifth slot midfielder will rarely play, so don't feel bad if he's not as amazing as your other players.

I had Arteta in my team before I watched the first half against Arsenal last week. That was enough. Stats can tell you anything but there is no substitute for watching a player in a match. He may make a lot of passes in the opposition half but he is still standing in the centre circle at the time.

Get rid. He's way too deep and not worth it, BPs withstanding. If you are thinking about Arteta -> Nani, stop thinking about it and do it.

Don't like Hughes much. Fulham aren't that good, and you could get Coleman instead who's out of position and playing for a better team.

Midfield conundrum that you probably don't want. Choose one of N'Zog and Jarvis, and then drop the other to a bench mid of Ferguson/Emerton/ De Jong.

Up front, you need better. Torres and Tevez preferably.

Haha, I make my own decisions at the end of the day, the reason I went Arteta in the end was because a few already had Cahill in my league and at the time everyone was shipping out Nani for him and not Arteta, so it was a 'differential'. Hasn't worked so far but he's a top player so can never write him off.

This is true. Certainly a top player and he hasn't scored badly in terms of BP's. It was just so depressing watching his first half against Arsenal - playing deep, missed passes, too nonchalant and no shooting.

there has been plenty of opinions back the pages, unfortunately they are just opinions!

      2 main schools of thought

      1. the way they played against chelsea, brucey would be foolish to change anything

      2. elmo is/was playing well, the forums on sunderland fc are calling for him back, and with a home game he shud return

it depends who u see him in contention with! if its zenden, then even if he plays he will probably be first sub and occasionally get over 60 minutes
but richardson was the one oop agaisnt chelsea so he could lose his spot to let mummy in, or , more likely bardsley could lose his spot, richardson takes bardsleys, and mummy comes back in!

BUT the main thing is, is that he is by no means safe!

As a Baggie, you got any more info on Brunt, other than what RdM has said? Brunt very likely to sit Stoke out?

All I know is he is a doubt. Di Matteo seems quite annoyed by the fact he's picked up an injury so that might be an indicator that he is more than likely going to sit the game out.

        Cheers anyway..

Don't bother upgrading Ferguson. You don't need the hassle of trying to decide who to play and who to drop. Keep him, stick him on the bench.

Yeah but its always better to have a strong bench. For example, this week N'Zog is playing Man utd away and Jarvis is playing Blackpool away, or Adam has Wolves at home...

                So?

Midfielders aren't as dependent on fixtures.

I played Arteta in 4 easy home games and he scores 2 every week.

Then he plays againt ManUtd and scores 8.

Thats practically what the people who run the country class as "part of the job". This place is gone to the pits. Id liked the idea of having the option of staying or not when I did my masters. Decision is most certainly out of my hands now.

Brian Cowen wouldn't get a job in cafeteria in Uk. Being a former GAA star who drinks gets you along way in Ireland....
