Robin Van Persie’s stock continues to rise. The Dutchman’s form that’s brought him 6 goals in his last 5 league outings has seen his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership rise dramatically, while his price has now climbed from 9.5 to 10.0 over those 5 Gameweeks. He’s on everyone’s Watchlist, part of everyone’s Wildcard plans.

Outstanding form isn’t the only factor behind his popularity. Arsenal boast a run of opponents in the coming Gameweeks that look set to provide Van Persie with ample opportunity to keep the goals, assists and FPL Bonus Points flowing at pace. A double fixture in Gameweek 27, with both Wolves and Stoke poised to arrive at the Emirates, is without doubt the main draw. However, there’s one major caveat that needs to be considered that, up until now, may have gone unnoticed.

With Arsenal about to restart their Champions League campaign with a titanic tie against Barcelona, Arsene Wenger must surely be considering his rest and rotation options – Van Persie looks to be particularly vulnerable. This directly threatens the striker’s potential for the double in Gameweek 27.

Arsenal are due to host Barcelona in the first leg of their tie on Wednesday February 16. They, like Spurs, play their tie one week earlier than United and Chelsea who face their opponents on February 22 and 23 – this could prove to be a crucial factor.

While United and Chelsea have their FA Cup tie prior to Champions League involvement, Arsenal’s clash with Barcelona falls directly in between their double Gameweek fixtures. Significantly it follows the first match, a home clash with Wolves, by 4 days. The question is then, will Wenger rest and rotate for the Wolves game with Barcelona in mind?

With Samir Nasri sidelined, we should expect the creative promptings of Cesc Fabregas to be untouchable. He may well be withdrawn early should Arsenal establish a lead, but would seem a likely starter against Wolves. The same can’t be said of Van Persie.

Wenger has viable alternatives available – Marouane Chamakh and Nicklas Bendtner are straining at the leash – the former has proved himself a reliable scorer and a capable foil for Arsenal’s surges from midfield; Bendtner meanwhile has taken his recent opportunities reasonably well, a fine strike in the FA Cup win over Ipswich was particularly memorable. Chamakh has started a league game since Gameweek 20, that 2-2 draw at Wigan was also the last time Bendtner earned a starting berth. Wenger may just look to hand them an opportunity when Wolves pay a visit to kick-off Gameweek 27. At the very least we should expect one of them to impact on Van Persie’s pitch time.

So, while Van Persie continues to climb in popularity and price, those yet to place their investment should ponder the possibility that the striker faces a trip to Newcastle this weekend and could then be reduced to a cameo role against Wolves. That would leave a home clash with Stoke in Arsenal’s second Gameweek 27 fixture; following that, the Gunners currently have a blank with the trip to Spurs yet to be rescheduled.

When you consider that this could mean a possible two-and-half matches over the next 4 Gameweeks, suddenly, Van Persie’s seemingly irresistible potential takes a dent.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

At the moment these are changes im making with my WC

    Kingson > Foster
    Gordon > Begovic
    Simpson > Walker
Vidic > Kolarov (always planned on getting him back)
    Hangeland > Coleman
    Foley > Djourou
    Albrighton > Young/Cahill

    Make Sense?

He is but does Wenger has options here? Bendtner and Chamakh could arguably do a job vs Wolves. Will he go without Fabregas too? Unlikely I would say - particularly with no Nasri.

I just sent this email to FPL, I am interested to hear people's opinions on it:

    Dear Sir/Madam,

I am just writing to you to offer my suggestions on how your game could be improved, in my opinion, for next year. On the whole I think your game is excellent, well run, easy to use and has a good scoring system. I just have an issue with the auto subbing system.

Of course I see that sometimes there may be unforseen circumstances that lead to a player not playing and I think the squad system is very good and allows the keener players to organise their teams based on a combination of matchups rather than just hoping their players do well every week. I also understand that you feel that you want to keep the less keen players coming back to your website and by having the auto sub system it means that they won't give up after missing the deadline for one week.

However, I also feel that the Fantasy Football system should be rewarding good sensible play rather than having luck like this causing the less astute managers to stay up the table. For instance in my minileague, the guy who is top hasn't checked his team since week 3 but has N'Zogbia and Gamst Pedersen on his bench and Bassong and now Chamakh (previously Fabregas when he was injured etc) starting who usually doesn't play. Throughout the season he has continually been given 10 or more points a week as a reward for his negligence of his team. I would be fine if he was still involved and had chosen (as he should) to start N'Zogbia and Pedersen, but he hasn't. Shouldn't you be rewarding the players who give your site 10, 20, 30 or in the case of me above 50 hits a week rather than the players who don't make your site look popular at all?

My suggestion would be a system where you confirm your team every week and then you get your auto subs. Just once would be enough, you wouldn't need to confirm it on the day or anything, just set your team for that week to show that you'd had an interest. That would mean the less keen people who only check it once a week would still get it and they would get rewarded with points off the bench, and might encourage the zero checkers to check it once, keeping them involved for longer.

Another suggestion I would have along the same vein is about the Captain choice. I like the ability to have a captain and I like that you can have a safety net just in case they don't play. However, I question the decision to have it selected based on either form or value. It seems to me that you need some luck to have the right people to select. Why not have a Vice Captain option that allows you to select your first substitute captain? That way each player can choose their favourite option even if he's an inexpensive guy that isn't in good form.

I thank you for your time and your excellent Fantasy Football game.

    Kind Regards,

    Chris Halls

Agree on auto captain, but not on auto subs. I love the idea that people can rediscover their interest in the game and do reasonably well even if they spend no time tinkering for a while. It's a fair reward for investing in decent substitutes and not only a great starting XI.

Sure, I am all for investing in a good squad. I myself operate a rotating 3 man defence and switch two cheap guys amongst the big guns up front. My point is that these people haven't chosen a good squad because their starting players (eg Bassong and Chamakh) aren't starting. They haven't been unlucky one week that their players haven't played, their players have been dropped and they haven't been on the website to change it.

To be honest mate, you've taken 4-8 point hits every week, so maybe you should look at that instead of getting frustrated at people who haven't changed their team.

Yes, I had a period of panicking and making stupid decisions. That was my fault and I'm over that. It's not about our relative positions, it's about where he should be. It's my fault that I am where I am.

I like the ability to choose an alternative captain who isn't based on form or value.

Only problem would be if your vice captain also didn't play, like for example if several games were abandoned. You'd need to have a 3rd default option. The 3rd option would need to be either form or value.

As for players not checking their team? You don't know that they don't give their team a cursory glance every week but just can't be arsed to change it. Or, maybe they like their teams as they are.

That bit just sounds of sour whiny grapes to me.

Hard to argue with any of that. Right with you on the captaincy thing. Nominating a vice captain would end the ludricrous fiasco of Tim Cahill becoming everyone's captain a few weeks back when almost everyone who had him had him as their third sub. And doing very well out of it. Vice captain is the only way to go, I think.

Why should you though? The player should get rewarded for having a good bench. In my opinion the game is perfect the way it is, other then maybe the Auto captain (but that's not a big deal) and maybe people who concede pens should get minus points.

At last a voice of reason amidst this must get Van Persie panic.

He has been in my team for the past 3 weeks and scored excellently. He will be replaced by Tevez on Friday night and will not be in my plans for the wildcard next week. I can't see RVP playing against Wolves and Tevez looks a very strong captaincy option at home to WBA.

Fabregas will most likely play both and to help at the back the keeper, Sagna, Clichy and Djourou will all most likely miss the Wolves game with Almunia, Eboue, Scillacci and Gibbs getting a run out, while KOSCIELNY should play both. He costs 5.9 and popped up with a goal in the week (went close also) and therefore represents perhaps the only defensive way into Arsenal's doublegameweek.

I'm having same dilemma and thinking of doing the same.

Thinking of building defence around Vidic, Coleman and Huth with 2 cheapies around them (probably Waker and Kelly).

WCing this week is Fabs a must? I am struggling fit him in, but I probably will...

I think so yes, he is the one player that is making me think of WC'ing this week having not been able to afford him on a freebie this week, instead opting for Torres OUT RVP IN

Look, the way I see it, a good game this weekend away to Newcastle, chance of a goal and or assist and BP's, Wolves away, even if he comes on, still a good shot at some points with limited pitch time, RVP always has an impact, and then Stoke, following the Champions League game, he could injured of course, but, if you're not in, you can't win!

I plan to have Tevez/Odemwingie/RVP for GW27 onwards

Even if RVP & fabs only play one of the DGW games they could still easily outscore other DGW players like RVP last time.

Very possible. If Wenger feels it necessary to play his best players vs Leeds and Huddersfield then surely he should be playing them in the Prem to try and keep up / overtake Utd?

spot on here mark. i think it's the fear that he does start both that worries me the most. that coupled with the complete lack of 'big' strikers with a dgw. jermaine defoe isn't exactly screaming "pick me pick me" right now

great article mark has made me doubt rvp in my wc. howveer the more i think about it - even if he only plays one of these games i think he can score highly higher than many of the doublers. my strikeforce will be odem and RVP and if only plays one then im ok with it.

does anyone know if hes in the dutch squad?

Internationals could really screw up everyone's pre-thought out plans. Glad holding the WC back for 27.

No 2 looks great until you realize that you have the real headache of having 5 players out for GW28, when you'd have 4-2-2 based on that line-up.

You'd need a 4 pt hit to field 11 that week.

I would like to vote but I don't like either of your midfielders - Begovic with Foster for me, although I have Gomes.
