QPR continued their summer of squad restructuring earlier this week with the capture of Fabio Da Silva from Man United on a season-long loan deal. Having struggled to nail down a place in Sir Alex Ferguson’s first-team, the 22-year-old has moved to Loftus Road and seems set for a regular role under Mark Hughes in the upcoming campaign:

With Taye Taiwo returning to Milan after completion of his short-term loan deal, there’s a vacancy at left-back to be filled for the R’s next term. Hughes has talked up the player’s adaptability but, depending on the club’s future dealings before the end of August, it seems more than likely Fabio will become an integral part of the back-four for the 2012/13 campaign, with his new manager revealing:

First and foremost, he’s a good defender. We can give him the games he’s craving at this stage of his career, so it benefits everybody. He’s very versatile – he can play left or right-back and he’s also been utilised in midfield by Sir Alex (Ferguson) in the past, so we know what we’re getting, and that’s a very good player….we believe he has all the attributes to be a success here next season.

The Statistics

Along with his twin brother Rafael, Fabio began his youth career at Fluminese in the 2005-06 campaign. Initially joining the club as a defensive midfielder, he was converted to left-back and was spotted by the Man United scouting system early on in his career at the Brazilian club. After three seasons in the youth set-up, the pair were snapped up by United in February 2007 and moved to Old Trafford the following January without making a single first-team appearance.

Over his four campaigns in the Premier League, it’s fair to say Fabio has failed to make the expected impact. Every season, Ferguson has utilised him more in cup games and Europe, with only 21 of his 53 appearances coming in the league – Rafael, in comparison, has played 52 times in the top-flight and a total of 90 times. Back in April, the United boss acknowledged the need for Fabio to gain experience elsewhere and he’s been true to his word, turning to his former player Hughes in a bid to boost the player’s game time.

The Prospects

Judging by Hughes’ comments above, the player hasn’t just moved away from United to end up warming another bench. Clearly, Fabio is under the impression he is set to feature regularly – this factor was the overwhelming reason both he and Ferguson have agreed to the loan, according to the 22-year-old:

This loan is so important for me in terms of my career. I want to play as many games as possible here. I want to play well and win games as well. Sir Alex Ferguson said that I’d enjoy it here and told me to play as many games as I can. It’s a good move for my career and for my confidence.

Fabio is likely to come in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and will be classified as a defender, though Hughes’ remarks concerning his versatility are intriguing – if in the unlikely event that he is fielded further forward, the loanee would certainly rise in our Fantasy thinking as a potential out-of-position prospect.

QPR Under Mark Hughes

P W D L F A GD P CS
Total 18 6 2 10 24 31 -7 20 3
Home 9 6 1 2 15 8 +7 19 3
Away 9 0 1 8 9 23 -14 1 0

CS = Cleansheets

A look at QPR’s performances since Hughes took over from Neil Warnock highlights the potential of perhaps picking up one of their backline as part of a rotation pairing. The R’s were unbeaten in their last six at Loftus Road, with their home form paramount to their survival – with clean sheets in each of the last three games in front of their own fans, Hughes’ approach seemed to pick up as his time at the helm progressed. If Fabio’s foraging runs from deep prove instrumental to QPR’s attacking potential, he could well offer the best route into Hughes’ backline for those willing to take a punt for home games.

Analysing the fixture ticker, Hughes’s side certainly have two strong fixtures in their first three at Loftus Road (SWA, CHE, WHM), affording Fabio the platform to demonstrate his potential early on and perhaps finally stake a case as a bona fide Fantasy asset for the season ahead.

Fast and strong with a trick or two and has scored well in France (over 50 gls in 130-odd gms), but not really tested higher up. $ in 17 for France, but I understand he's often been used as a wide right foyle for Benzy.

But he is only 25 and had injuries last season, which kept him out of the Euros.

I've seen YouTube compilations of course but they can make Kevin Doyle look like a Champons League level striker. But Remy does look skilful and has scored a goal or two.
Not sure if he seems capable of playing the role of a lone striker though. Time will tell.
        Cheers for the response lads

Can't believe Spurs fans can forget VDV's heroics so conveniently, when he was really instrumental to their growth over the previous 2 seasons.

+2 Spurs fans certainly haven't forgotten DVD, and while he may not have been quite so productive last season compared to the previous, he's a top quality player. If only he didn't fade so badly late in games.

I don't see Siggy's signing affected DVD at all, think they'll rotate for some games, perhaps play together in others. Depends on AVB's tactics. But 4 comps to go for this season, so a big squad is necessary.

        I can't say I agree that Sig's a better long-term option. Only time will tell, I guess.

VDV could really be at the peak of his career, if you could get a near-complete season out of him. A little more patience goes a long way - look at the results Arsene yielded by being patient with RVP's fitness. There's no denying VDV's class & hunger for goals.

Malouda/Studge very likely on their way out.

                Hazard should play CAM

                Hulk not confirmed.

DeBruyne likely go on loan again.

That leaves who? Just Marin & maybe Hulk.

there has been a lot of excitement about him already, with good reason, but there is no guarantee he will be a success there. I worry that he fell out of favour at Hoffenheim, and Swansea managed to get the best out of practically anyone! I think he wont be good enough value next season if 9.0-9.5m

Interesting CG, but surely for that t happen it would require changing the way the Gooners attack. Giroud will need service in a completely different way to RvP, who often makes chances himself.

Watching Arsenal a lot last season. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VycVcYSAz2U

Look at how many tap ins he has, obviously that is partly down to his world class movement but to say he often makes chances for himself is wrong.

OK, but that doesn't necessarily mean Giroud will be able to reproduce RvP's goals. It was interesting that Bert van Marwijk allegedly chose RvP over Huntelaar because he could be more involved in team play, something he also does at Arsenal.

Giroud looks a completely different player to me, albeit based on limited evidence so far. But as Chamakh found out, the big, tall forward doesn't necessarily prosper at Arsenal.

Still, we'll see down the line, but I wouldn't expect anything close to 20 Prem goals from Giroud this season.

I don't mean to piss on everyones parade, but I think Siggy might be around the £10m mark. The £8-8.5m I've seen a few times on this page will be way off, imo. His ppg was absolutely fantastic whilst playing for Swansea. Going to a top 4 team, it'll mean we'll have to cough up big bucks I reckon.

I think 9.5 is a good guess. It'll be interesting to see his involvement at set pieces with VDV and Bale around.

They could maybe adopt the infamous 4-6-0.

    next season predictions:
mancity will remain at the top
man utd carrying their financial problem and off field issues will drop couple of positions. young will keep diving
avb will take tottenham as far from top 4 as he took chelsea
liverpool will return to the top 4
chelsea will finally understand that RDM is not good and the CL win was a miracle. he will be sacked before christmas
swans and norwich: at least one of them will return back to the championship. new coachs, 2nd season syndrom, bad players...
everton: will it be the season where they get it right from the start??..... naaahhh
arsenal: will lead the league, see rvp picking up a 3 months injury, and qualify for the CL

City finish third behind UTD and CHEls ( I dont know in which order)
      Young probably will still dive
AVB will do better, similar position for TOTT
Chelsea will do well in the Prem but suck in the CL and everyone will be ok with that since they won last year.
This could happen, more likely with Norwich IMO
I think they will, they will spend more than 10 mil in pre season and try to challenge top 4 😀
Arsenal will do ok, but not great.

I was thinking Sigurdsson would be 7-7.5 million and I still do

Just because people on here have hyped him up doesn't necessarily mean he's suddenly going to be ridiculously expensive....

(I hope anyway) Modric was only around that mark last year wasn't he? As was Bentley when he was supposed to be the next huge points star and spurs had just paid 20 million for him

Because by the time the game launches in a week or so VDV and Modric should still be there so he should be priced alongside them

plus carroll, dempsey and adam did it over an entire season and were known FPL favourites, Siggy did go under the radar apart from on these sites

That said they did go a bit wild with the over pricing last year, but I still think Siggy should and will be affordable
