Just 24 hours into the Andre Villas-Boas regime and Spurs were already making waves with Wednesday’s announcement of the capture of Gylfi Sigurdsson from Hoffenheim. The 22-year-old arrives at the Lane in a five-year deal which costs the club £6.8m and represents something of a coup, with the Icelandic star initially expected to follow former boss Brendan Rodgers to Liverpool this summer:

Sigurdsson’s acquisition is regarded as the first step in a restructuring program under Villas-Boas as Spurs look to target younger and more dynamic players with the ability to cope with the new manager’s demanding high-pressing game. The former Swansea loan star admitted that playing under Villas-Boas next season was one of the major factors in his decision to reject the advances of Liverpool and move to the north London outfit instead.

I like him and the ideas he has. He has faith in me and I’m looking forward to working under his leadership. The team has world-class players in their ranks and they play good football, which I like. I was impressed with the club’s plans for next season and the coming years. There is clearly great ambition at Tottenham and the club intends to do big things.

The Statistics

As a youngster, Sigurdsson spent time on trial at Arsenal and Preston before signing a youth contract at Reading in October 2005. Prior to the 2007-08 season he was handed a professional contract but failed to establish himself at the Royals, with loan spells at Shrewsbury and Crewe earning the midfielder his first taste of league action.

The arrival of Brendan Rodgers to the Madejski in August 2009 finally allowed Sigurdsson to flourish as a key component of the Reading first XI. His one and only full season at the Royals harvested 17 goals and nine assists and, after producing two goals and an assist in four games at the start of the following campaign, Sigurdsson was snapped up by German club Hoffenheim prior to the closure of the August transfer window.

His time at the Bundesliga outfit was a little hit and miss, however. While he made 29 appearances in the 2010/11 season, 16 of those came from the bench – with 9 goals and 3 assists, though, Sigurdsson was voted the fans’ Player of the Season. Last season harvested just seven appearances before Rodgers rescued him once again, bringing the Icelandic star to Swansea in January. With seven goals and three assists in 18 league games, he lit up the Premier League and afforded Fantasy managers a superb cut-price option across the games, with a 5.0 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) eventually rising to 5.6 by the end of the campaign.

The Prospects

Turning down the chance to reunite with Rodgers could well be a risky move, given the effect the Irishman has had on Sigurdsson’s career. Clearly, his move to Spurs isn’t one of blind faith, however – assurances are likely to have been given over his role in “the hole” behind a lone front man as Villas-Boas goes about reshaping the north London outfit. Levy and Villas-Boas have already spoken of their “shared vision” and the highly sought-after playmaker is unlikely to find himself stranded on the flank – a scenario Rafael Van der Vaart suffered from time to time during the Redknapp era, much to Fantasy managers’ frustration.

Sigurdsson’s price across the Fantasy games will be key to how we assess his prospects. Gareth Bale’s cost is set to escalate after last season’s exploits, with the Welshman likely to join Van der Vaart around the 10.0 bracket. From an FPL perspective, Sigurdsson could well come in around the 8.0 – 9.0 mark and present us with a relatively cheap alternative route into Tottenham’s midfield, though the potential downside is he may not be handed free reign on set-piece duties this time round – a factor that would dent his appeal.

Much may also depend on the transfer dealings between now and the end of August. If Spurs can make the necessary changes required to implement Villas-Boas’ philosophy, the new manager’s time at Porto suggests they could well be a force to be reckoned with. Elsewhere in the midfield, Luka Modric may be moved on to generate cash, while Van der Vaart could also head out the exit door. While there is no doubting the latter’s class, the Dutchman is hardly known for the dynamism required to nail down a role in the new manager’s starting XI – such a scenario may well boost Sigurdsson’s appeal.

With a half-season of Premier League experience behind him, a bedding-in period isn’t required; there’s no reason why Sigurdsson won’t hit the ground running and one look at Spurs’ opening set of fixtures holds plenty promise. Although trips to Newcastle and Man United in Gameweek 1 and 6 respectively are far from straightforward, a run of games between Gameweeks 2-5 (WBA, NOR, rdg, QPR) suggests Villas-Boas’ side will be set for heavy investment and, with Sigurdsson at the creative hub of their attacking ploys, a strong start to the Fantasy season could well be on the cards for a player who averaged 5.7 points per game last time round, more than any midfielder in the league.

I know it's silly but I'm bored. Thinking the structure of my team will be:

    Cheap rotating GKs (8.5-9m)
Chelsea def (7m), 4 x 4-5m defenders (RDG, SWA, WBA, AVL, WIG, NOR, FUL all options)
    Hazard (9.5m), Siggy (7.5-8.5m), 1 bench fodder 4.5-5m
    Aguero (12m), Torres (11m)

Leaves about 20m for 2 mids and a striker

I'm thinking over GW2-3 Chelsea def becomes Vertoghen and Torres/Hazard become Spurs striker/Bale/big hitter from another team

A decent number of CS and attacking points came from the change in system. Was a poor points scorer under the old formation.

Milanista, you not thinking of starting the season with a big hitting GK, wait until the cheap, form, good rotators become clear?

Also, personally, I typically steer clear of expensive players new to Prem, perhaps to my cost sometimes. But they often struggle at first - Mata, Silva both started slowly. That's why I wouldn't be tempted by Hazard early doors.

I realise Vorm/Krul for 8.5 was exceptional but individually they scored almost as much as 7m Hart. I'll go with 2 cheapies, spend the money elsewhere and WC early if necessary.

Hazard is only in because of DGW and Mata being absent.

Ok, I see what you're saying but I can always use a transfer or 2 to correct the rotating keepers. If I have to sell a big hitting GK it adds a third transfer (spending the money in midfield or attack)

Yes Optimus, Heco's made the point. Suarez/Evra was an FA disciplinary process, JT's is action by the CPS. But FA could easily attach some sort of 'football' punishment, if found guilty, thereafter although that could be argued as double punishment.

Either way, this is a very prickly case and a bit of a no-win situation for the FA. JT found guilty, taking him to Euros/demand for additiona games ban will bring political pressure, not guilty, may make Anton look like he's abusing the 'race' issue for his own ends.

Good luck, sorting that lot out.

Optimus, I point you to the Churchill quote:

Could easily apply to the law. 🙂

Wtf? He's good and all, but not ready for such a high profile move! He's extremely wasteful sometimes and is like a kid on the playground who thinks he can skill it past everyone instead of passing.

Has a footballing brain worse than Theo Walcott's, even though the latter has improved considerably with decision making

Fulham are about to sign Sascha Riether (29) from the relegated German side 1.FC Cologne on a year's loan. Riether can play either at right-back or defensive midfield, but hasn't been convincing in either position recently for his club. I'm not convinced that he will be an improvement on anything that Fulham have already got.

Wolfsburg defender Alex Madlung may also be moving to WBA next week. He's one of those players of whom German observers say that he'd "do well in England", but don't mean it as a compliment. Madlung is brave, throws himself in front of the ball a lot, but is technically limited. Not as good a player offensively as Robert Huth though, who has a similar profile in Germany.

Yeah, I know. But he played 33 games out of 34 for Cologne last season, so someone might have viewed Riether as being an OOP midfield dynamo, which he really isn't.

True, there is the pressure. Tsonga did also come from 2 sets down to beat Federer, which normally never happens so he does have it in him. Seems apt to post this again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tg56itziNMI

            Can't wait for it. 🙂

He's in the Olympic squad so the common interpretation is that he'll be handed extended leave, hence missing the start of the season.

many will say lambert, i dont think he'll make the step-up as well as some expect, rodriguez could be the one from saints

pogrebnyak will score goals at reading

west ham look the best defensive option to me especially with their tight home record last season

Lallana could be worth a look from the Saints. A couple of decent defensive options at Reading. Nolan as a goalscoring mid from West Ham...

😉 Yeah just checked and they had 17 clean sheets in the league. 7 at home and 10 on the road.

This is why I am having Jussi as my main keeper (along with a 4.0m GK) and not rotating him.

won both in the end, the 5 spanish defenders from the start turned out to be a masterstroke!! if id had any knowledge at all of european football i may have had a chance of winning the whole thing with them 5 as my base but unfortunately the rest of my team only got 1/3 of my total points so itd be fair to say i was quite lucky!!

    Evening all

So, i'm just sitting here taking screenshots of last season's debacle to record it for posterity and I found this transfer:

    GW9 Gabbidon > Boyata

What an exquisitely dull transfer: one hopeless 4m defender for another. To add extra spice Boyata got injured two weeks later and I had to sell him. Can anyone beat that for tedium and pointlessness?

I really think they're the sort of transfers that actually make a pretty big difference (but Boyata got injured there...) but I can never resist the urge to do the 'premium' transfers. And lots of them at that. One of my main downfalls in this game.

Yep, I know what you mean - when we only get one transfer a week it's really, really hard to spend it on the likes of Gabbidon or Boyata instead of a big-hitting mid or forward. I enjoyed that one though. Given the probable dearth of cheap, reliable defenders this season I think I'll be doing a few more like that.

I think the two valid approaches are:

      1) Big hitter plus filler
      2) Two cheap keepers who rotate well. The rotation bit is the key.

Completely depends on how well the two rotate. I've never really been that much of a fan of an expensive keeper though. There's usually one or two cheap one that come pretty close to matching the pricey ones anyway, with the additional saves (so save points) they have to make. So, to me, it makes sense to save some cash there.

Haven't checked, but if Green and Krul rotated, would seem a decent plan.

In theory, if you can find 2 decent keepers who aren't too pricey who rotate well, it could work out really well for you. However, you have to bear in mind that you may end up with your starting keeper getting 1 point and the guy on your bench getting lucky with an away clean sheet, some saves and/or maye even a penalty save. It's notoriously hard to predict so I would suggest getting a decent value keeper who you would be happy playing most weeks and a cheap back-up keeper who starts.
You could also look to rotate 2 super cheap options. That way you're not benching a £5m+ player every week. It worked well for me last year.

The same goes for defenders, especially attacking ones.

Both options can work very well. All depends on prices really.

Found last season than when having 2 rotatable keepers, i picked the wrong one quite often.

just checked my copy of the season ticker that milanista made, west ham and stoke, and sunderland and newcastle seem the best options

I personally prefer two that rotate because:

      - Less of an impact if injury strikes than if you're reliant on just one 'keeper.
      - You've usually saved enough funds to be able to upgrade a defender to one from a top team who will get the clean sheets plus potential attacking rewards.

Hart and be done with it.

Or like last year a Vorm/Krul combo. Maybe Davis and Green this year?

But away clean sheets infuriate me. So will prob do Hart this year and forget about it.

ok, hadnt thought of the choosing part. always preferred getting a top keeper and a fantasy bargain, vorm must be much more expensive this season though!

One drawback with the one expensive goalie route is that the more expensive keepers tend to have less to do, whereas the cheaper ones will pick you up more save points.

If the first choice keeper of Chelsea, Utd, City is reasonably priced, it's an option to get the keeper instead of a defender, particularly as full-backs were a problem for City and Utd last year, and Chelsea's back four was never nailed on. However, there's always a few cheap keepers who do well, and last year I decided to use rotating goalkeepers for the first time and it was better than if I'd stuck with Hart every game.

I'm thinking this, and have done in my Sky team Hart and Ivanovic. Hart is a certain starter and cheaper than Vinny/Lescott and Ivanovic is surley nailed on rb for Chelsea since Bos left and is cheaper than Cole/Terry. Utd difficult defence to pick from outside Evra, and Spurs/Arsenal bit iffy too and Spurs players will be dearer this year.

So Hart, Ivanovic plus cheapies for me. Almost certainly Fabio, Hooiveld of Southampton as benchies maybe with a punt on Rafael as he's likely to be the cheapest Utd option and one other poss Huth.

Apparently they were after Maicon, indicating they're not happy with just Ivanovic. Don't feel he's a first choice RB myself.
