It says a lot about Robert Huthโ€™s previous performances that the Stoke City defender started last seasonโ€™s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game with the same price tag as Vincent Kompany. Granted, the City skipper had been classified as a midfielder beforehand but Huthโ€™s outstanding attacking returns were enough to see him slapped with a 6.0 valuation as the campaign kicked off last August:

The former Chelsea man seemed to discover a keen eye for goal in 2010/11, finding the net six times in addition to providing a trio of assists. Huthโ€™s offensive exploits, teamed with his resilience at the back, helped harvest 14 bonus points and racked up eight clean sheets for the Potters โ€“ in total, he returned 138 points, eclipsing central defensive partner Ryan Shawcrossโ€™ haul of 98 by some distance.

The big German suffered from Tony Pulisโ€™ tinkering last time out, though. While Huth missed just four of the Pottersโ€™ league games, only 22 of his 31 starts came in his natural position at centre-half, with the Stoke boss fielding him as a full-back on nine occasions. Out wide, Huth looked ill-at-ease and notched just three times in 2011/12, with only one goal in the first 31 Gameweeks of the campaign. A single assist and eight bonus points, in addition to seven clean sheets, boosted his tally to 101 but Shawcross proved far greater value in Pulisโ€™ backline, returning 118 points from a starting price of 5.0.

The Prospects

Ideally for Fantasy managers, a permanent berth at centre-back is the perfect scenario โ€“ at the very least, this would afford Huth a better chance to rack up the blocks than the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index favours so much. Many of his appearances at right-back were down to Andy Wilkinsonโ€™s injury-plagued campaign, though with Ryan Shotton now establishing himself as a regular in the first-team squad, Pulis has a more natural alternative as cover. Last summer, the Stoke boss snapped up both Jonathan Woodgate and Matthew Upson with one eye on the clubโ€™s European exploits but this term the Potters have no such diversions; with less need for chopping and changing required, Huth could once again forge a partnership with Shawcross at the back.

A drop in price seems on the cards across the Fantasy games. Huth had never been dearer than 5.0 beforehand in FPL and if his cost returns to that same level, he is likely to afford Fantasy managers a decent mid-price option at the back and will be favoured by many over Shawcross. Looking at the statistics, Huth still offered plenty offensive potential last time round. Only Pulisโ€™ first-choice front two, Peter Crouch and Jon Walters, averaged more efforts per game than the German โ€“ for a side with just 36 goals (the lowest in the Premier League) his set-piece threat is ever-crucial and vital to his Fantasy potential.

With six of those eight clean sheets coming in front of their own fans last time out, Pulisโ€™ backline clearly offers greater potential at home but the opening fixture list has done them little favour. The Potters have just three home matches in the first eight Gameweeks, with Arsenal, City and Swansea all rolling up to the Britannia. Visits to Chelsea, Liverpool and United are also all on the agenda in the first couple of months, suggesting that Fantasy managers are likely to steer clear of Huth until Stoke’s shocking schedule takes a turn for the better.

        I think so too.

Reckon he'll be about £6m this season.

I get the feeling people are going to get a nasty shock when they see FPL prices this season. Genuinely cannot see cheap £4.5m defs coming from the likes of Swansea, Sunderland and Stoke.

I can see MCFC defs at £7.5-8m easily. Hart may be the cheapest route to Citeh defence this year. I'm racking my brains to think what Jonny Evans like bargain from a top 4 club there will be this year and I'm struggling.

I have already decided that Ian Harte may well be the best cheapie with scoring potential to get.

          +1

Kompany will be £8m, similar points total to Vidic/Baines in the previous season.. you don't really know about the Jonny Evans of the world until things get going, but there always are one or two.. don't think we'll get anyone on par with Vorm though..

True Pratik, but Mata/Silva started more slowly. You never can tell and this is why I er on the side of caution. So he starts great, you miss out of maybe 2/3 GWs of points, easily adjusted with an FT. And who's to say the alternative doesn't do as well or better?

Simple judgement call, yours to make, for sure.

He could be, but he's certainly not gonna be in my team. Under RDM, he played alongside the defensive midfielder and didn't venture forward much. I'm pretty sure he will be given a similar role this season. He might get some assists, but I don't see him scoring too many goals from open play.

Conclusion : Go for Mata/Hazard, given they will be priced similarly. Ramires could be a good punt for the first few weeks.

Plenty of players have had questionable celebrations at times (I remember Federer making a speech after a Wimbledon win over Roddick in which he fairly rubbed his nose in it from memory anyways) I don't mind Djokovic as a player, I don't really take into account the person when it comes to playing style. Nadal is my front runner right now, was disappointed to see him go out so early.

Yeah, it was bound to happen. He has a lot of knee issues that they keep pretty low on the media radar, but I can see him getting a similar treatment in NY, as well unless he rests. As for celebrations yeah there´s a thin line, but when a guy can´t even reach a ground stroke my mom could get to do you really get hype to the point of fist pumping like you really turned it around. Some of them have such pressure put on them it's terrible. I quite like Murray as an actual player and person, just the pressure is nuts.

Yeah, allegedly the cause of AVB's first Sir Red Nose blast. Don't know much about Fryers but this deal has been talked about for past two weeks, which goes to show Levy's new focus, and the type of job AVB is being asked to do.

That was a poorly concieved loan idea from the start. I guarantee that McE would play circles around Aaron Ramsey. He essentially played the entire preseason, looked good at making Fat Frank look good recklessly blasting forward and was benched soon after the season started. He could be a decent offensive player, but he´s been made a bitch so many times, no one knows for sure.

HTR, this is the real test of UEFA's new rules, which will be pointless if not policed. Can it be proven that, based on similar sponsorship arrangements, that Citeh's is well outside the market rate, and therefore, could be investigated.

But what then? And how many other ways will the bean-counter creatives at Citch find to circumvent the system? What if, all of a sudden, every Qatar citizens suddenly bought a Citch shirt (easily sponsored by the family)? That would clearly be market manipulation, by will UEFA be able to prove it, and then have the power or will to actually do something about it?

Answres on a postcard, 'cause I don't know.

Only had one proper season using FPL so I was just wondering, when a player misses a whole season over injury, such as Wilshere or Vidic, do they cost less the next year or will it be the exact same price?
It's probably a stupid question, just wondering what Vidic might cost.

Gimli, it should be reflected but to what extent is tough to predict. Wilshire is a good example. He's never scored well in FPL (albeit age-related) but back-end of previous season was getting a lot of hype. That hype hasn't reallt stopped (he's largely seen now as a must in the Eng et-up, for eg) so I doubt he'll be dirt cheap.

Vidic is proven in the Prem, and his price won't be affected much. Last season £8m, this might be £7m-£7.5m but could easily be £8m again.

      Hope that helps.

Got bored yesterday night so thought I'd bug FPL Support Team about when it's starting. Got the following reply today

    'Hi Ceri

Thank you for your interest in the Fantasy Premier League game.

The new game for the 2012-13 season will be up and running within the next two weeks for you to select a team and create leagues to compete in with your friends.

You will be able to login using the same login details as last season.

We hope you enjoy taking part in the game and good luck.

    Regards

    Fantasy Support'

Been dying for a match like this. One very baseline, one more comfortable at the net. Causes some brilliant points.
