It says a lot about Robert Huth’s previous performances that the Stoke City defender started last season’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game with the same price tag as Vincent Kompany. Granted, the City skipper had been classified as a midfielder beforehand but Huth’s outstanding attacking returns were enough to see him slapped with a 6.0 valuation as the campaign kicked off last August:

The former Chelsea man seemed to discover a keen eye for goal in 2010/11, finding the net six times in addition to providing a trio of assists. Huth’s offensive exploits, teamed with his resilience at the back, helped harvest 14 bonus points and racked up eight clean sheets for the Potters – in total, he returned 138 points, eclipsing central defensive partner Ryan Shawcross’ haul of 98 by some distance.

The big German suffered from Tony Pulis’ tinkering last time out, though. While Huth missed just four of the Potters’ league games, only 22 of his 31 starts came in his natural position at centre-half, with the Stoke boss fielding him as a full-back on nine occasions. Out wide, Huth looked ill-at-ease and notched just three times in 2011/12, with only one goal in the first 31 Gameweeks of the campaign. A single assist and eight bonus points, in addition to seven clean sheets, boosted his tally to 101 but Shawcross proved far greater value in Pulis’ backline, returning 118 points from a starting price of 5.0.

The Prospects

Ideally for Fantasy managers, a permanent berth at centre-back is the perfect scenario – at the very least, this would afford Huth a better chance to rack up the blocks than the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index favours so much. Many of his appearances at right-back were down to Andy Wilkinson’s injury-plagued campaign, though with Ryan Shotton now establishing himself as a regular in the first-team squad, Pulis has a more natural alternative as cover. Last summer, the Stoke boss snapped up both Jonathan Woodgate and Matthew Upson with one eye on the club’s European exploits but this term the Potters have no such diversions; with less need for chopping and changing required, Huth could once again forge a partnership with Shawcross at the back.

A drop in price seems on the cards across the Fantasy games. Huth had never been dearer than 5.0 beforehand in FPL and if his cost returns to that same level, he is likely to afford Fantasy managers a decent mid-price option at the back and will be favoured by many over Shawcross. Looking at the statistics, Huth still offered plenty offensive potential last time round. Only Pulis’ first-choice front two, Peter Crouch and Jon Walters, averaged more efforts per game than the German – for a side with just 36 goals (the lowest in the Premier League) his set-piece threat is ever-crucial and vital to his Fantasy potential.

With six of those eight clean sheets coming in front of their own fans last time out, Pulis’ backline clearly offers greater potential at home but the opening fixture list has done them little favour. The Potters have just three home matches in the first eight Gameweeks, with Arsenal, City and Swansea all rolling up to the Britannia. Visits to Chelsea, Liverpool and United are also all on the agenda in the first couple of months, suggesting that Fantasy managers are likely to steer clear of Huth until Stoke’s shocking schedule takes a turn for the better.

Just been looking back at my GW1 team last year and their prices to see if I could compare them to players Im looking at this year (obviously predicted prices).

    Given 4.5 Al Habsi 4.5
    Cole 7.5 Kompany 6 Brown 4.5 Gabbidon 4 Simpson 4
    Malouda 10.5 Silva 9.5 Sessegnon 6.5 O'Hara 6 Moses 5
    Bent 10 Carroll 9.5 Zamora 7

    Potential Replacements

    Jass Al Habsi
    Cole Vertoghen Onouha Gorkss Hooiveld
    Bale Hazard Nzogbia Nolan Mcanuff
    Torres Bent D.Cisse

I think my replacements are realistic and wouldn't actually be too displeased with this side to start the season. To fit Aguero in I would probably downgrade Bale and upgrade Bent to alter my spread of cash.

Lallana a definite if betwen 5-6m only.

Hooiveld did well at set pieces last year but its' a different kettle of fish with Premier league defenders.

Lambert is exactly in the Holt mould but offers so much more in terms of free kicks and assists, much more of a team player.

GK all dependent on the Butland situation

it wasn't a bad pairing, Schwarzer and Mingolet, I just kept leaving the guy who scored more on the bench. I got so fed up I shipped Schwarzer to De Gea to play him every week. I kept Mingolet to play him when United played City and he pulled a no-shoe. My keepers annoyed me last season

But you wouldn't just leave a cheap GK in for all season would you? Well Vorm and Foster could disagree but they were special cases.

Looking at Given/Foster for rotation probable cost of 10m could be expensive but still 1m cheaper than Hart/4m for example.

You sticking to a Hart/Vidic combo?

Krul/Ming will be over 10M I think. I am initially thinking heavy defence to start things off. Hart for sure.

              Then Vidic and Chelsea def.

Or double chelsea defence changing one to Verthongen/Vidic for GW2

              Hart and a 4M.

Vidic, Vertonghen and Terry all on my radar for expensive defenders. Prob Terry to start and then moving him after DGW for Verthongen I think. Clichy and Rafeal could be bargains, but at same time headaches too.

My season only kicked off when I wildcarded GW6 to change to a Super 6 attack or whatever us deadzoners called it? (Christina/Jafa?) With ubercheaps. I may go that way rather than an even spread from the start this time!

    Super 6 from last year

    Mata Nani Silva
    Rooney Adebayor Dzeko

    This years alternative could be?

I'm not sure, there aren't any pairs that appeal enough for it. Might go Reading/Swansea but Swansea could be too expensive. Villa/WBA is another but too expensive I think. I might reduce it to a double double rotation and then have another cheap rotating pair from other teams.

Hopefully pricing throws up a nice surprise but doubt it. Im looking at Given/Foster for keepers and Harte is a shoe in for DGW so will most likely get a Swan to rotate but would predict 5m price tag.

    Well that was fun!

Just won a 5-a-side tournament without scoring a single goal!

Scraped through the groups with 3x 0-0's.

Won both the Quarter-Final & Semi-Final on Penalties, all thanks to my immense keeping skills.

Then won the final 1-0 with a Paul Robinson-esque own-goal.

Jesus Christ, since when did Southampton sign Jason Puncheon, Jay Rodriguez, Steven Davis and Buttner?!
They will stay up next year, already have players like Rickie Lambert, Morgan Schneiderlin, Billy Sharp, Adam Lallana, Danny Fox, Steve de Ridder, Jack Cork etc...building a strong outfit

Morgan Schneiderlin will get you lots of RBs and make a lot of passes btw

      I like you

Davis was in the last hour, Buttner is yet to be officially confirmed and Jay Rod was a few weeks back (not sure about Puncheon though?)

I would also suggest caution as to Schneiderlin. A fair few appearances from the bench last season. Looking more likely that rotation is going to be key in Saints approach to the Premier league

Squad suddenly has depth. Most Saints fans are expecting a big centre back signing. We have very little pace at the back. It will be interesting to see whether Adkins breaks the Fonte/Hooiveld partnership

Its Lambert or Lallana I guess, with the latter having the advantage being the mid. I've a feeling most squads will only have one forward spot up for grabs again, such is the dominance of the heavyweights (with Jel and Cisse as mid-price).

      Excuse the bias.

Phenomenonal with the ball at his feet. Likes to twist and turn. Wouldn't say he has unbelievable pace but very quick when actually running with the ball.

Superb at link up play, likes to drift in and often ends up playing behind the front two. At times our left and right mids would swap last season just to mix it up.

How he will adapt to the premiership pace is unknown. Not really defensively minded.

All depends on price. Anything between 5 and 6mill then he should be a definite. Taarabt was a Championship gem and was priced accordingly and we all know how well that went....

Bowing to your clearly superior inside knowledge on this one - what's his temperament like? Can he make the jump mentally if things don't go for him early on. I think that's Taarabt's main issue.

I'm feeling I can carve a niche here with my Saints knowledge(bias) cheers.

Genuinely, he is very level headed, persistent and doesn't react to bad challenges.

Downside? I'd say he can go down too easily (although the way he plays draws fouls) and he can be guilty of trying too much trickery (not showboating, more twists/turns).

          I'd guess 5.8 (hopefully)

I fear for us given the early fixtures (remember Boltons start last season, look how that ended...)

West Ham won't get away with the long ball tactics they employed last season. Its a very easy criticism to make but I did watch quite a bit of them last season and very rarely did I see them get the ball down and play.

Very impressed with Vaz Te late in the season though.

I have no idea how Reading will get on at all. Unknown quantity for me

That's why I think he will be moved inside and Buttner goes on the left win, he comes inside so much that Fox is often left exposed. I think you got away with it a lot last season but could be a huge problem in the PL.

Who are Southampton going to play upfront next season? I cant see Atkins dropping Lambert as he is too valuble to the team, and he's just splashed 6 million on Jay Rodriguez which to me suggests Sharp will be dropped and Lambert and Rodriguez will start upfront. What are your thoughts??

      General consensus, Lambert 100%

Rodriguez and Sharp will rotate depending on how the former/latter settles but J-Rod will get the nod early on

Also, would not be surprised to see us go 4 5 1 for the first month of the season looking to pack the midfield with the likes of Cork, Hammond and Davis

The Double - did you have that? Massive time sink, stick men matches almost in real-time. Took about 15 minutes for the ball to go from one end of the pitch to the other. Massively wasted youth.

Football Director ruined my life. Didn't some City author sy the same about Utd? I moved onto another by the same programmer - International Manager I think.

Completely agree - he is technically capable & if he applies the workrate BR requires he could prove an excellent player this season, but it will come down to Cole and his desire.....
