It says a lot about Robert Huth’s previous performances that the Stoke City defender started last season’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game with the same price tag as Vincent Kompany. Granted, the City skipper had been classified as a midfielder beforehand but Huth’s outstanding attacking returns were enough to see him slapped with a 6.0 valuation as the campaign kicked off last August:

The former Chelsea man seemed to discover a keen eye for goal in 2010/11, finding the net six times in addition to providing a trio of assists. Huth’s offensive exploits, teamed with his resilience at the back, helped harvest 14 bonus points and racked up eight clean sheets for the Potters – in total, he returned 138 points, eclipsing central defensive partner Ryan Shawcross’ haul of 98 by some distance.

The big German suffered from Tony Pulis’ tinkering last time out, though. While Huth missed just four of the Potters’ league games, only 22 of his 31 starts came in his natural position at centre-half, with the Stoke boss fielding him as a full-back on nine occasions. Out wide, Huth looked ill-at-ease and notched just three times in 2011/12, with only one goal in the first 31 Gameweeks of the campaign. A single assist and eight bonus points, in addition to seven clean sheets, boosted his tally to 101 but Shawcross proved far greater value in Pulis’ backline, returning 118 points from a starting price of 5.0.

The Prospects

Ideally for Fantasy managers, a permanent berth at centre-back is the perfect scenario – at the very least, this would afford Huth a better chance to rack up the blocks than the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index favours so much. Many of his appearances at right-back were down to Andy Wilkinson’s injury-plagued campaign, though with Ryan Shotton now establishing himself as a regular in the first-team squad, Pulis has a more natural alternative as cover. Last summer, the Stoke boss snapped up both Jonathan Woodgate and Matthew Upson with one eye on the club’s European exploits but this term the Potters have no such diversions; with less need for chopping and changing required, Huth could once again forge a partnership with Shawcross at the back.

A drop in price seems on the cards across the Fantasy games. Huth had never been dearer than 5.0 beforehand in FPL and if his cost returns to that same level, he is likely to afford Fantasy managers a decent mid-price option at the back and will be favoured by many over Shawcross. Looking at the statistics, Huth still offered plenty offensive potential last time round. Only Pulis’ first-choice front two, Peter Crouch and Jon Walters, averaged more efforts per game than the German – for a side with just 36 goals (the lowest in the Premier League) his set-piece threat is ever-crucial and vital to his Fantasy potential.

With six of those eight clean sheets coming in front of their own fans last time out, Pulis’ backline clearly offers greater potential at home but the opening fixture list has done them little favour. The Potters have just three home matches in the first eight Gameweeks, with Arsenal, City and Swansea all rolling up to the Britannia. Visits to Chelsea, Liverpool and United are also all on the agenda in the first couple of months, suggesting that Fantasy managers are likely to steer clear of Huth until Stoke’s shocking schedule takes a turn for the better.

thought i'd ask this before FPL opens and everyones a little bored. im on my 3rd season of sky ff (cash ML at work) thought i had the game all figured out, and now they throw in extra points for 4 tackles won and 60+ passes. i fear change!
can anyone lend me some insight so who may achieve these extra points, particularly with the promoted teams?
are there sites where i can gather this information?

Our members area has opta data for tackles won and pass count which can be sliced by Gameweek and viewable match to match. For promoted teams you'd need to do more digging but obviously we'll have these as the season unfolds.

tackles won, im thinking cheap defenders from lower clubs may benefit, also holding midfielders like lucas make loads of passes and are cheap.

Let's cut to the fantasy chase - in the first 6 GWs (yep, I'm looking at the ticker) what do you think the top 5 team rankings will be for
    A) Most goals scored?
    B) Least goals conceded?

    My unscientific guesses:
    A) United, Chelsea, City, Tottenham, Villa
    B) Chelsea, City, United, Everton, Swansea

Fulham definitely were playing on my mind, good shout, but I fear attacking wise they may have peaked last year. See how the new striker does alongside Dempsey, it's a high bar to equal.

Not quite sure with the hammers players but it is an inkling.
AVB's defence relies on quick players and when Luiz and Bosingwa are your quick defenders, he had no chance. I expect much better at Spurs

Yeah granted the Chelsea defenders were a poor fit for AVB's high line, but I still want to see him prove his high line works in the Prem - I find it hard to recall many sides who have played that and kept an outstanding number of clean sheets. Maybe Swansea, but that unravelled in the second half of the season.

Vertonghen is very tempting though as Mila says.

It was only the one game against Stoke where he delivered the points and I haven't seen him mentioned so thought it might have been forgotten about.

I'm staying clear of Newcastle to start with. Dodgy fixtures and Europa.

Mark, if you're still around. What's the deal going to be with the Fantasy League Pro game for the Premier League? Andy said the prices ranged between £20-40 per team in previous seasons! That coming down at all (if you know)? Seems ridiculously high, really.

All in all the Euros version was good fun, made a nice change from the usual.

Cool. The ones in my league really enjoyed it and, given the price, we were thinking of just doing a draft system ourselves but if the prices did come down I wouldn't mind paying as it was pretty good fun.

            Definitely.

Apparently Faurlin was one of the players Hughes wanted to work with at QPR. Got injured just before we sacked Warnock.

Not much of a FF prospect though sadly. But his positioning off the ball is flipping amazing, even with Barton dragging him all over the pitch.

So, will Joe Cole hold down a regular place this season or just be an impact sub? I have a feeling the latter but since Lille were interested in keeping him and Rodgers still wanted him back he must have a role to play.

He would probably fit well into the proposed system and would offer a bit of flair, if he can avoid 2 footed lunges on players 90 yards from goal.

Anyone thinking of Rafael this season if he comes in at 5.5m again? There is some rotation risk with Jones/Smalling but he seemed to get ahead of them in the pecking order towards the end of last season. 5.5m for a Utd defender playing most games with assist potential sounds decent to me.

Of course its no Jonny Evans but we won't have that pleasure again.

I think he'll be more than 5.5m. 6m for sure IMO, maybe even 6.5 if they're really harsh. He should be our 1st choice RB, but i can't see him starting the 1st few games due to the Olympics. Great assist potential as you say and he's improved his fitness which is good meaning he can play week in week out and last the full 90 with more regularity. There will be some rotation, with Jones and Smalling but he'll play the majority.

I'd be amazed if he was 6.5 but can definitely see 6. Though if he's not around the first few weeks that will help his price drop when the sales start. 5.5-6 for a Utd defender playing nearly every game has some appeal.

He is a good enough player to adapt to a more restrictive style. Also have you seen how small the QPR pitch is? He can do laps of it in the time it takes to string 3 passes together.

this^^^, who's going to protect fabio/traore lack of defence?
at least they should be good to watch.

didn't notice that. Good spot, Green will surely be first choice at QPR.

Great news for Everton. I predict a surprisingly strong start for them this season given the fixtures, & the additions of Jelavic, Pienaar and Gibson; all of whom they didn't have at the start of last season

It's a brave man who sticks his neck out on a strong start for Everton.

Especially when they start with Man Utd at home followed by two away games. Maybe give it a few weeks to see what their form's like and if good enough bring coverage in from GW6 - SOT, wig, qpr, LIV, ful, SUN, rdg, NOR is a nice run of games

True, the away games aren't that good. I think i'll still have one of Jelly/Pienaar from the beginning though. Dilemma is choosing the right one. Jelly would get pens when/if Baines leaves

When Jelly and Naismith played together at rangers it was Naismith scoring the goals. Interesting, thinking Mandy myself.

Perhaps I might betray myself here but I wish the worst for Mr Naismith. This imposter picked up an absolute fotrune for doing NOTHING this year and he deseted ship like a RAT at the first sign of surf.
Everton, you're welcome to this little deserter.

Excellent, think I'll struggle to fit Jelly in so Pienaar will be in my team early on. Hopefully around 7m.

He did a great job for Rodgers as Swansea...nice touch, cool finish. Prospect rather than starter though I'd say.

Since then he's come on enough to have got a surprise call up to the Italy Euro squad. Didn't see a minute of football though...
