It says a lot about Robert Huth’s previous performances that the Stoke City defender started last season’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game with the same price tag as Vincent Kompany. Granted, the City skipper had been classified as a midfielder beforehand but Huth’s outstanding attacking returns were enough to see him slapped with a 6.0 valuation as the campaign kicked off last August:

The former Chelsea man seemed to discover a keen eye for goal in 2010/11, finding the net six times in addition to providing a trio of assists. Huth’s offensive exploits, teamed with his resilience at the back, helped harvest 14 bonus points and racked up eight clean sheets for the Potters – in total, he returned 138 points, eclipsing central defensive partner Ryan Shawcross’ haul of 98 by some distance.

The big German suffered from Tony Pulis’ tinkering last time out, though. While Huth missed just four of the Potters’ league games, only 22 of his 31 starts came in his natural position at centre-half, with the Stoke boss fielding him as a full-back on nine occasions. Out wide, Huth looked ill-at-ease and notched just three times in 2011/12, with only one goal in the first 31 Gameweeks of the campaign. A single assist and eight bonus points, in addition to seven clean sheets, boosted his tally to 101 but Shawcross proved far greater value in Pulis’ backline, returning 118 points from a starting price of 5.0.

The Prospects

Ideally for Fantasy managers, a permanent berth at centre-back is the perfect scenario – at the very least, this would afford Huth a better chance to rack up the blocks than the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index favours so much. Many of his appearances at right-back were down to Andy Wilkinson’s injury-plagued campaign, though with Ryan Shotton now establishing himself as a regular in the first-team squad, Pulis has a more natural alternative as cover. Last summer, the Stoke boss snapped up both Jonathan Woodgate and Matthew Upson with one eye on the club’s European exploits but this term the Potters have no such diversions; with less need for chopping and changing required, Huth could once again forge a partnership with Shawcross at the back.

A drop in price seems on the cards across the Fantasy games. Huth had never been dearer than 5.0 beforehand in FPL and if his cost returns to that same level, he is likely to afford Fantasy managers a decent mid-price option at the back and will be favoured by many over Shawcross. Looking at the statistics, Huth still offered plenty offensive potential last time round. Only Pulis’ first-choice front two, Peter Crouch and Jon Walters, averaged more efforts per game than the German – for a side with just 36 goals (the lowest in the Premier League) his set-piece threat is ever-crucial and vital to his Fantasy potential.

With six of those eight clean sheets coming in front of their own fans last time out, Pulis’ backline clearly offers greater potential at home but the opening fixture list has done them little favour. The Potters have just three home matches in the first eight Gameweeks, with Arsenal, City and Swansea all rolling up to the Britannia. Visits to Chelsea, Liverpool and United are also all on the agenda in the first couple of months, suggesting that Fantasy managers are likely to steer clear of Huth until Stoke’s shocking schedule takes a turn for the better.

I don't think Evans will be as much as Vidic, I think Fulham defenders will stay fairly cheap, but I doubt we'll get a 4.0 route in this season. I don't think Zabaleta is going to offer us much discount on Richards, but otherwise I think that's all plausible.

Don't worry I saw this reply 😉 Yep agreed, Fulham defenders may well approach the 5.0 zone where the agony is not worth the punt. The Zab/Richards thing skewered me completely last season. I actually went from being a massive fan of Richards to thoroughly appreciating the solidity and decision-making of Zabaleta and could understand why Mancini kept preferring him. If he was nailed on this year I would seriously consider.

I have a bit of a grudge against Richards, I fought to get him in the picks over Kompany the very week Mancini started going with Zab instead.

In a way I don't mind the Fulham defs being around 5 as it makes going for Riise or Hangelaand more attractive at only 0.5 more.

Such wasted effort Stilicho! I was almost certainly just as confident in Richards at the time and got him into my team in the January wildcard. Hung on way too long.

Hopefully they won't all rise with the tide pushing Riise and Hangeland's prices up still further. My hope is that Hughes gets nailed on ahead of Senderos who didn't convince me at all. Hughes at least should be cheaper.

Doubt you'll get any for less than 5. (apart from williamson who won't play). I've got my eye on santon who should probably be the cheapest. He has mad fantasy potential. But probably at least 5m. I might avoid our defence altogether due to europa commitments. They will probably be too expensive to rotate.

The Thunder are my second favourite team. The Finals must've been bad for u being Miami vs OKC

really? any big names or mostly draft picks and young players for the future?

yeahh maybe... would require us trading gasol and/or bynum though. would be a start of an entirely new era with most of our last title winning team all gone

ohh really? god I just wish they hadn't moved. I can only imagine what it would have been like to go to SONICS home games with durant and westbrook and harden. but since they screwed us over I only have hatred for them. though i'll admit they're a very talented team

yeahh it was. i was rooting for LA and chicago initially then rose got hurt and LA knocked out so in the conference semis was rooting for boston (really like that team) and san antonio. in the end my disgust of miami and the whole lebron thing oveweighed my hatred for the thunder though almost everyone else here was rooting for miami.

I honestly lost most of my respect for lebron when he moved to miami.... i'll be honest here

We signed dragic, Beasley and Eric Gordon so not bad.

                  You from Seattle?

I hate boston almost as much as miami.

LeBron is an amazing player but a terrible person

yupp! at least we've got the sounders to be proud of :D. and the mariners TWICE this season... couldn't believe they actually did something good! haha.

yupp! otherwise they might be my second team tbh.

ohh huh... weird. guess some people just have a team like that. for me i really like kg, pierce, rondo and allen. them and the bulls would probably be my two teams in the east.

can't believe that allen and lewis both used to be sonics too! to think of okc was still in seattle and then had one or both of those guys in addition to their current team! danggg

its nowhere near the epl or la liga but I wouldn't call it absolute garbage. its pretty entertaining to watch and theres a decent amount of skill. the seattle sounders have some good players including fernandez who appeared 4 times for uruguay in the wc and then you've got players like donovan, beckham, henry, keane. nesta just signed for an mls team (though i honestly can't remember who). its a pretty good league and it's getting better.

and actually attendance here is great! the sounders lead the league in average attendance every year since we joined the mls! and if you compare our average attendence we would be 8th in the epl and ahead of spurs. we'd be 6th in la liga and 4th in serie a in terms of average attendence 😀

I don't!!!! it bores the hell out of me. honestly everything important at all in the game can be seen on sports center highlights if you really care, BORING

Anyone think Alonso would be a great signing for Rodgers to bring back to Anfield? Lineup could be:

    Reina

    Johnson -- Skrtel -- Agger -- Enrique

    ------- Lucas ------ Xabi Alonso --------

    Gerrard -------- Suarez/Cole ---------- Downing/Cole

    ------------------- Carroll /Suarez -----------------

or if you're lucky pratik will convince the council to take this on 😉

As long as you know your stuff around the web, you shouldn't have a problem. And as rick said, use google docs. It's very simple, try it out. But are you sure you are up for regular maintenance - weekly checking of everyone's scores etc?

Think about it. Chat with rick on the email till you get a rough layout. I don't wanna do the country thing, as some country have very few members but countries like England, India have quite a few. But if you feel you are up to it, go ahead.

When he starts, he scores more than his fair share of goals. An assists more than a few too.

I am in particular looking at Hoilett. If he joins a good looking PL team, i fancy him.

It does appear that latest rumblings have QPR in the chasing pack for Hoilett.

Not sure that will happen but it would make for one interesting midfield battle for places: Diakité, Faurlin, Hoilett, Park, Taarabt, Barton(?), SWP, Mackie.

Just need a centre half to go with Anton and we're all set.

Starting 11 for next season in a 4-2-3-1 formation at home?
              ------------Green------------
              Onouha, Anton, Hill, Fabio
              ------Faurlin, Diakite-------
              ----Cisse, Taarabt, Park----
              ----------Zamora------------

Starting 11 for next season in a 4-3-1-2 formation away?
              ------------Green----------
              --Onouha, Anton, Hill, Fabio--
              --Faurlin, Diakite, Park-------
              -----------Taarabt ----------
              --------Cisse, Zamora--------

And of course we have Derry, Mackie and Andy Johnson to come off the bench even before Barton gets back!!

I think Mackie might be sold. Also think that Nelson starts unless there is another centre back purchased to go alongside Anton.

Hughes will be able to rotate properly this season too.

We may be able to get rid of Barton in the January window, but even if not he still gives us an option in MF from November.

With Green in goal and a stronger midfield I think QPR defenders, at home, will be better value than Swansea, who I think will struggle this season.

I'll almost certainly be getting Fabio.

Wonder who our new captain will be?

If we bring in Hoilett as rumoured today Mackie would be surplus to requirements.

Captain? My money's on Ale Faurlin. Quality player, his English is pretty good and he's been with us longer than most of the others who will play regularly

It's what he played with last year Evs.

There's a world of difference between being stuck out on the wing with an unstable midfield behind him v playing in the hole behind the front 3 with good players in front of him and the depth to make changes each week as form/fitness dictates

Evs, last season was a oretty tumultous one for Taarabt.

Warnock and the previous owners completely shafted him (ironic since it was Taarabt who pretty much got them all into the Prem!).

Comments like 'I'll drive him to PSG myself' did nothing for his confidence whilst Dastardly and Muttley were looking for the best way to make a buck out of selling him before they scarpered.

He then bought Barton and immediately stripped Taarabt of the captaincy-another public humiliation. Then he dropped him despite him being our only creative force.

His performances under Hughes in the latter half of the season were brilliant. This season with a proper Premier League quality manager from the off, an owner who knows how to treat people decently and a proper quality supporting cast I also think he can take off this season.

I can see Park doing a lot of the water carrying for him.

Also, look how many shots of his hit the post last season. All it takes is a bit of luck to change and he could have had 10 or 12 goals easily last term.

Think he was just unlucky to be honest, Doosra.

Head wasn't right for the start of the season though. Look at his performance against Newcastle at Loftus Rd, though, as an example of how he dominated a game and got no reward for it.

Pressure is off him now and I can see him having the kind of season this year that everyone was expecting at the beginning of last season.

                Agree with this TW.

I think Norwich score enough goals to stay up and since they kept Holt that should continue. You'd also trust Hughton more than Laudrup to navigate the Premier League.

I think Swansea will miss Caulker immeasurably. They will also struggle for goals without Siggy. I could see them completely tanking it this season.

I reckon Reading will go too.

Southampton look like they are making some decent buys but, again, will they perform at this level? Buttner looks like a very good piece of business for them. Can Lambert be a goal machine at this level?

West Ham worry me. Don't think they are as strong as they were when they last went down and think the loss of Green, Upson, Ba and Parker is going to hurt them.

Wigan's luck may well run out this season too and I have a feeling Stoke are going to be in the relegation struggle as well for some strange reason.

The last national manager wouldn't pick players from the a-league and for good reason. Players like Kewell come back when they're too old to play in europe and thats about it
