Reading’s summer recruitment drive showed no signs of letting up after the club announced the capture of Chris Gunter from Nottingham Forest in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £2.5m. The 22-year-old arrived at the Madejski Stadium on a three-year contract, with the option of a further year, and is the sixth player to join Brian McDermott’s side since the Royals clinched the npower Championship title last season.

Snapped up on the same day as Adrian Mariappa from Watford, Gunter’s arrival boosts McDermott’s backline options and perhaps puts him in the driving seat to nail down the right-back role ahead of Shaun Cummings for the upcoming campaign. Cummings was the Royals’ first-choice option last time round but failed to impress from an attacking perspective, with no goals or assists to his name; Gunter’s speed and attacking sensibilities should add a key ingredient to the Royals play from deep and affords Fantasy managers an intriguing option in the cut-price bracket.

Upon completion of his move, the new boy revealed McDermott played a major part in persuading him to leave the City Ground after three full seasons as a Forest regular:

You only have to look at what Reading have achieved in the last couple of years to realise what a good manager Brian McDermott is. I also spoke to Garath McCleary when he joined Reading from Nottingham Forest and the first thing he mentioned was the manager too. So when I met Brian myself he was exactly what I expected. He played a massive part in my decision to join this club. I’m yet to meet anyone who has anything but massively positive things to say about him and the club.

The Statistics

A prodigious talent, Gunter signed for Cardiff City’s youth academy at the age of eight and penned his first professional contract less than two weeks after his 17th birthday in August 2006. The full-back featured 15 times, returning one assist in his debut campaign and, after a further 13 appearances in his second season for the Welsh outfit, was snapped up by Spurs midway through 2007-08 in a deal thought to be worth £2m.

After so much early promise, Gunter’s career came to an abrupt halt at White Hart Lane, however; he made just five league appearances during his time at the club before moving to Forest on loan in March 2009 – the brief loan spell saw Gunter appear eight times and his impressive performances were enough to convince the club to fork out £1.75m for his services in July 2009. From then on, he quickly established himself as a vital first-team member; Gunter has missed just five games in the past three seasons, appearing 133 times for the City Ground side and returning two goals and 13 assists.

The Prospects

There’s no doubt Gunter looks an intriguing option for Fantasy managers eyeing up the Reading defence. Ian Harte initially looked the best bet; with set-piece duties and spot-kicks in the bag, the former Leeds man returned four goals and eight assists in just 32 appearances last term but the subsequent acquisition of Nicky Shorey clearly places plenty doubt around both players’ game time at left-back.

In the middle, it’s a similar scenario. Alex Pearce and Kaspars Gorkss appeared to be nailed-on but Mariappa’s arrival means there is uncertainty over McDermott’s preferred central defensive partnership right now, suggesting Gunter, at right-back, could be the most secure. Last season he returned a goal and five assists; a significant improvement on Cummings’ attacking output, though it should be noted that Mariappa is versatile enough to play at right-back, affording the Royals boss further options in defence.

Priced at 4.0 in both Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and the Sky Sports game, the former Forest man will pick up plenty interest if he manages to cement a role as a regular at the Madejski. The fact that Reading were relatively reliable in terms of home/away defensive returns last term is likely to make it easier for Fantasy managers to bench Gunter when the Royals head out on the road; 12 clean sheets and 18 goals conceded at home compared to eight and 23 respectively away illustrates the fact that McDermott’s men were defensively superior in front of their own fans.

Early interest in Gunter could be tempered by an ankle injury suffered in training that has kept him out of the pre-season reckoning. The latest reports suggest that a scan on the injury revealed no serious damage, indicating that the full-back will be in the equation for the season kick-off.

With a double Gameweek to start off the season as Reading host Stoke before a tricky trip to Chelsea, we should quickly get an idea of McDermott’s thinking for the season ahead. As mentioned above, the home games are likely to be targeted as potential for points but with only Spurs and Newcastle visiting by the end of Gameweek 8, it may well be that we take a step back from Reading’s defensive assets, with their Madejski schedule taking a turn for the better from Gameweek 9 onwards.

Good morning all. Please could I have quick RMT before I leave for work:

    Ruddy/Jaaskelainen
Lescott Gunter A Cole Cuellar Clyne
Mata Bale Kagawa Taraabt El Ahmadi
    Aguero Torres Petric

Tempted to do Aguero>Tev to free up 2m for Torres>Rooney in gw2. Thoughts?

      Looks good
      1) Norwich/Hammers is a sort of weak GK combo, not many CS there
      2) Not totally sure on El Ahmadi but may be ok
      3) Wait till community shield for the tevez decision but do plan ahead
      4) IMO Graham is better than Petric but it may be worth a punt

      Other than that looks good.

        Thanks MAHFREEMS. In response

        1) Its either Ruddy/Jaask or Federic/Jaask and I just fancy Norich at the back this season
        2) El Ahmadi is a bargain at 4.5. Really impressed for us in pre-season
        3) Agreed
        4) That is an option and I am consious of the Swans good fixtures early season, but Petric has been banging them in pre-season,

Thanks for the advice though, food for thought 🙂

I expect him to hit the ground running. If United go with a 4-2-3-1, he WILL definitely start. But if either Welbeck or Hernandez get a chance, he might be the one to drop out.
But I rate him as a fantasy prospect and have him too.

El Ahmadi plays as a holding/defensive MF yeah? Probably won't get many attacking points, but for 4.5 seems like a solid option. I'm thinking about swapping Guthrie for El Ahmadi after the DGW.

    Freidel, Federici
    A. Cole, Cuellar, Coloccini, Demel, Fonte
    Bale, Mata, Pienaar, Noble, Guthrie
    Rooney, Tevez, Torres

Basically, I bounced Lescott and beefed midfield up.

not enough strong defences in their IMO, try to pick up a MUN, MCI or CHE defender as they may prove more reliable.

Also a tip, as tempting as it is, never post on here when you think you're sorted, you'll spend at least another 20 mins making it "perfect" again.

Aston Villa were just horrible last year under Mcleish.. They were good for Clean sheets till two years ago. While some may argue that Lambert does'nt do defense, they do have potential to get some CS's. With the fixtures they have, combined with Clark's goal threat and price he seems a bargain

Bargain price yes, but he's not been a reliable FPL prospect prior to this. I had him last year and he was an OOP disappointment playing the holding role and frequently being the first to go off (usually around the 60th minute)!

I much prefer Lowton's goal/assist potential to Clark's and will be pairing Lowton up with Ridgewell in a rotation should give me cleanies/goals/assists/BP's far more often than most £9.5m combo's.

They already signed Podolski and Giroud. Wenger has already said he sees Podolski playing through the middle so I'd guess he believes the bases are already covered when RVP leaves as Giroud can certainly play there too.

Both are different types of striker to RVP so it will change the team dynamic but it's Arsenal - they will still play fast, attractive footy and score plenty of goals!

Re Pienaar: Everton also have 5 of their first 8 games away from home.

Two of those home games are against Man Utd and Newcastle. For a team that perennially starts slow that isn't the most friendly of schedules to begin with.

Petric could be a good punt as I think he will start up top with Ruiz playing behind him. Fulham are a decent team with good early matchups. I am beginning to be wary of Swansea, especially if Allen goes.

Moses is £7m but could also be a good shout. Consider Larsson of Sunderland too at that price.

1- He's Italian...and seeing what Martinez did gave him a chubby, as he probably didn't have the balls to roll-it-out himself.

2- He needs something to negate the extra attacker, if I'm right, didn't Pardew flail and try to play a 3-4-3 by the end of their ass whoopin by Wigan?

3- allows him to keep people happy...possibly gets dirt dobbler working wings (see slow white guys) out of advanced spaces/lanes and protecting the back three, and allows players like Yaya to bomb forward. It also allows marginalized talents like Nasri and Johnson more field time...
This also can legitimize Tevez dropping deep, which shouldn't worry his owners the way a Rooney dropping deep would.

Key point would be; are there line ups where they sneak an extra striker or an extra mf in there?

Funny you mention Ruiz as I was looking at him the other day wishing he'd been listed as a midfielder in the game... I think he'll have a good second season. He was coming on strong late last year when he suffered a season ending injury.

Hi ILA.. I have already rearrnaged my team on the basis he is going there... He is my big punt at the start of the season.. Not many are going that way but if it pays off I will be laughing.. Nice opening fixtures for the Irons and big sam will play the long ball game even more if he gets him....

    DDG, Federici
    Cole, Cahill, Demel, X, Y
Piennar, Michu, Noble, Bale , Kagawa

Fair enough, you could also go for Petric or Graham up top and save 2.0 in the bank for El Nino -> Rooney. Could also give you 2 solid defenders in the back (5.0 each -Colo, Hangeland, Williams, Rangel, ShawX, etc.)

You see Cuellar (sunderland) picking up clean sheets?
            Hazard 180minutes????

Why do people choose Pienaar for their starting team? Not great fixtures .. 3 away in the first 5 matches and 2 home with Man United and Newcastle. Also, they usually don't start season well. 😐

Form over fixtures. With Jelly and Pienaar in the starting XI they should do well versus any opponent, as stated above.

Their first 13 fixtures are as follows:
MUN, avl, wba, NEW, swa, SOT, wig, qpr, LIV, ful, SUN, rea, NOR

They've never really had a finisher like Jelavic in the past few seasons. I expect them to turn the tide this time.

I said the exact same thing further up the page.

He's definitely a good FPL player but the 5 away games and Everton's penchant for starting slowly every season is rightly making some wary of getting him in.

Good arguments for and against him in your GW1 squad.

I have had him in my team but on bench for GW1 as recently as early this morning actually. Utd between him, Moses and Sinclair for my final MF spot actually and Swansea worry me which leaves Pienaar and Moses.

You could argue that Wigan start off just as slowly as Everton and had an equally good finish to the season.

All in all I think either player will do well for whoever picks them. Pienaar is probably not going to outscore those other players I've mentioned by many points , if at all so I don't think its that big of an issue.

Both have similar propositions facing them: Everton: Do we play negative shaped football playing not to lose?
Wigan: Do we stay with the 3-4-3 which served us well in last 10 matches?

I think Wigan has the easier choice.

I don't buy this not starting well stuff. Few different faces at Goodison this season, compard to when they started last year e.g. Pienaar, jelavic, Gibson, to name but a few?

Although you have to play fixtures first 6 games min, no one has any form.

Pre season doesn't can't teams rotate like hell during the 90 and used often for fitness and trying different combos out. Not a true yard stick.

I looked into the slow start thing because I thought it must be a myth. Sadly it really is true and it goes back years and years.

I can't explain it but what I can say is that it cannot be because of a lack of striker. It's true that they haven't had a good striker for a long time but that doesn't explain why they do so much better in the second half of every season. Aside from last season they've always had the same striking options at the start of the season as at the end and yet they always follow this pattern.

Maybe it will be different this year but I'd like to find a reason for the pattern that isn't true this year before investing.

I've been trying to find an article I thought I'd seen which explained that Everton's slow start is not just a jinx, but I can't find it. It might just have been someone explaining it on the Guardian podcast.

But it was something to do with the facts that they have a smalp squad, don't make many summer signings, have loan players who take time to adapt, etc.

I'm picking Pienaar in some of the limited transfer formats, but in FPL I think I'll wait & see.

    DDG, Federici
    Cole, Cahill, Demel, Hangeland, Wilson
Piennar, Michu, Noble, Bale , Kagawa
    Torres, Bent , Jelavic

    0.0 in the bank

    Gw1 -> Cahill->Dawson
    Gw2 -> Torres->Aguero
There will be no injuries which will disrupt my plans. I will not knee jerk, or jump on one of the crazy FFS bandwagons. Plus Dawson will play regularly as he is now captain.
