Reading’s summer recruitment drive showed no signs of letting up after the club announced the capture of Chris Gunter from Nottingham Forest in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £2.5m. The 22-year-old arrived at the Madejski Stadium on a three-year contract, with the option of a further year, and is the sixth player to join Brian McDermott’s side since the Royals clinched the npower Championship title last season.

Snapped up on the same day as Adrian Mariappa from Watford, Gunter’s arrival boosts McDermott’s backline options and perhaps puts him in the driving seat to nail down the right-back role ahead of Shaun Cummings for the upcoming campaign. Cummings was the Royals’ first-choice option last time round but failed to impress from an attacking perspective, with no goals or assists to his name; Gunter’s speed and attacking sensibilities should add a key ingredient to the Royals play from deep and affords Fantasy managers an intriguing option in the cut-price bracket.

Upon completion of his move, the new boy revealed McDermott played a major part in persuading him to leave the City Ground after three full seasons as a Forest regular:

You only have to look at what Reading have achieved in the last couple of years to realise what a good manager Brian McDermott is. I also spoke to Garath McCleary when he joined Reading from Nottingham Forest and the first thing he mentioned was the manager too. So when I met Brian myself he was exactly what I expected. He played a massive part in my decision to join this club. I’m yet to meet anyone who has anything but massively positive things to say about him and the club.

The Statistics

A prodigious talent, Gunter signed for Cardiff City’s youth academy at the age of eight and penned his first professional contract less than two weeks after his 17th birthday in August 2006. The full-back featured 15 times, returning one assist in his debut campaign and, after a further 13 appearances in his second season for the Welsh outfit, was snapped up by Spurs midway through 2007-08 in a deal thought to be worth £2m.

After so much early promise, Gunter’s career came to an abrupt halt at White Hart Lane, however; he made just five league appearances during his time at the club before moving to Forest on loan in March 2009 – the brief loan spell saw Gunter appear eight times and his impressive performances were enough to convince the club to fork out £1.75m for his services in July 2009. From then on, he quickly established himself as a vital first-team member; Gunter has missed just five games in the past three seasons, appearing 133 times for the City Ground side and returning two goals and 13 assists.

The Prospects

There’s no doubt Gunter looks an intriguing option for Fantasy managers eyeing up the Reading defence. Ian Harte initially looked the best bet; with set-piece duties and spot-kicks in the bag, the former Leeds man returned four goals and eight assists in just 32 appearances last term but the subsequent acquisition of Nicky Shorey clearly places plenty doubt around both players’ game time at left-back.

In the middle, it’s a similar scenario. Alex Pearce and Kaspars Gorkss appeared to be nailed-on but Mariappa’s arrival means there is uncertainty over McDermott’s preferred central defensive partnership right now, suggesting Gunter, at right-back, could be the most secure. Last season he returned a goal and five assists; a significant improvement on Cummings’ attacking output, though it should be noted that Mariappa is versatile enough to play at right-back, affording the Royals boss further options in defence.

Priced at 4.0 in both Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and the Sky Sports game, the former Forest man will pick up plenty interest if he manages to cement a role as a regular at the Madejski. The fact that Reading were relatively reliable in terms of home/away defensive returns last term is likely to make it easier for Fantasy managers to bench Gunter when the Royals head out on the road; 12 clean sheets and 18 goals conceded at home compared to eight and 23 respectively away illustrates the fact that McDermott’s men were defensively superior in front of their own fans.

Early interest in Gunter could be tempered by an ankle injury suffered in training that has kept him out of the pre-season reckoning. The latest reports suggest that a scan on the injury revealed no serious damage, indicating that the full-back will be in the equation for the season kick-off.

With a double Gameweek to start off the season as Reading host Stoke before a tricky trip to Chelsea, we should quickly get an idea of McDermott’s thinking for the season ahead. As mentioned above, the home games are likely to be targeted as potential for points but with only Spurs and Newcastle visiting by the end of Gameweek 8, it may well be that we take a step back from Reading’s defensive assets, with their Madejski schedule taking a turn for the better from Gameweek 9 onwards.

Tevez, Siggy, Petric, Hughes and Michu all have slight doubts around them for various reasons (rotation, new to league, positioning)

Course you probably know this, but there ya go. One risk too far imo.

Are there any potential (i.e. rumoured) real life transfers that would make you rethink your current FPL team?

Mine is: if Baines goes to United (or leaves Everton basically), I would be tempted to find a way to get Jelevic in.

RVP going to United/City would be an FPL nightmare as well!

I find it slightly irksome, as an Arsenal fan, that some of the posters I find myself most often in agreement with - are Spurs fans. Milky, Roscola, Sitilicho, Spence (?)... My Tottenham friends in real life aren't nearly as discerning or reasoned - so this is quite a shock.

Good to see pre-season on FFS going well. Everybody looking sharp in training. Practising for the real thing - which will start around Monday 13th. Lots of sounds decision-making going on, lots of good reasoned picks - rotation, fixtures etc etc. When the squads are little more set and settled in 2 weeks time, and when we've seen the final pre-season games... then we can cut our teeth for real. I reckon current drafts will bare only passing resemblence to the finished teams - but good to stay fit and sharp...

What are your thoughts on this team and give it a rating out of 10.

    Friedel - Federici
    Williams - Clichy - Ivanovic - Demel - Clyne
    Silva - Hazard - Holman - Maloney - Guthrie
    Aguero - Torres - Graham

2.0m spare for Torres -> Rooney in gwk 2
Straight way Hazard for Bale in gwk 3

My question stems from players seek to upgrade Torres +2 to Rooney GW2.

It might. Which is why they'll do it early in the week.
Also, we're just a couple of thousand people on here. For a price change of 0.1 I think you need much more transfers, in or out. Form affects highly too.

If Adebayor can score 24 goals as Arsenal frontman, then I'd certainly fancy someone like Giroud to do well.

Ryo Miyaichi at Wigan anyone? Could be going on loan there...

I had a bit at Bolton and it didn't quite click FPL-wise, despite him playing very well for them. I read some statistic saying he created more goal-scoring chances per minute than anyone else in the league?? Not sure it was quite that good but a similar stat... hold on...

I had him too when he was on loan. I rate him higher than Walcott. He'll go out on loan, but there isn't definite news as to where.

No love for Sess here, surprising considering he will probably play OOP and scored pretty well for his 1st full season. In line with Dempsey of previous years (with exception of last year). Slowed down towards end of year like the rest of the club, and had a slow start but could be another Dempsey in the making.

Not that I have him. Just saying 🙂

He was a powerhouse at one point last year, but the 8.0 is disconcerting. Once he starts scoring > in

Too expensive imo, if he was around 7 id have him but 8 is too much.

To be fair, with last seasons total and his potential, they could hardly make him cheaper. He is close enough to Dempsey's price last year, and got a similar score to Dempseys 2010-2011 season.

That's true. When he hits form, he will clearly be good value. He has greater potential than, say, Larsson, for instance.

Yeah, youre right. I just dont feel comfortable owning an 8m mid from Sunderland. In saying that if he starts off as the solo man up top and rattles in a few early goal ill probably jump on. just think its too much of a risk for GW1

True true, just thought it funny to see Kagawa floating around allot of squads who is more expensive and no league experience with a rotation risk attached, to a lil dempsey in the making 🙂

Yeah it's a fair price, I've considered him especially looking at the fixtures. It all depends on which striker Sunderland sign, could boost his points dramatically if it's someone like Fletcher.

Despite this article, I'm not convinced with Gunter.

Not sure YaYa will get many points unless played further forward.

You'll probably find it hard to replace Poggy. Go for Graham instead?

Cech is an interesting choice, 6.5 isn't an outrageous valuation for him, but I really don't think Chelsea are going to play park the bus in the PL this season so I'm not a fan of your doubling up on their defence.

Midfield is weak with Yaya and Song. Song is nowhere near worth his price. Front 3 are nice but beware of whether Aguero might start or not, I think he will but it's hard to take risks on your opening team. He has an international fixture on 15th 🙁

Cheers dude, Song played in a more advanced role torwards end of season is reason for his inclusion..Ya Ya is a gamble for sure but again can play very advanced...Didn't know Argentina were playing on 15th! Cheers
