Reading’s summer recruitment drive showed no signs of letting up after the club announced the capture of Chris Gunter from Nottingham Forest in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £2.5m. The 22-year-old arrived at the Madejski Stadium on a three-year contract, with the option of a further year, and is the sixth player to join Brian McDermott’s side since the Royals clinched the npower Championship title last season.

Snapped up on the same day as Adrian Mariappa from Watford, Gunter’s arrival boosts McDermott’s backline options and perhaps puts him in the driving seat to nail down the right-back role ahead of Shaun Cummings for the upcoming campaign. Cummings was the Royals’ first-choice option last time round but failed to impress from an attacking perspective, with no goals or assists to his name; Gunter’s speed and attacking sensibilities should add a key ingredient to the Royals play from deep and affords Fantasy managers an intriguing option in the cut-price bracket.

Upon completion of his move, the new boy revealed McDermott played a major part in persuading him to leave the City Ground after three full seasons as a Forest regular:

You only have to look at what Reading have achieved in the last couple of years to realise what a good manager Brian McDermott is. I also spoke to Garath McCleary when he joined Reading from Nottingham Forest and the first thing he mentioned was the manager too. So when I met Brian myself he was exactly what I expected. He played a massive part in my decision to join this club. I’m yet to meet anyone who has anything but massively positive things to say about him and the club.

The Statistics

A prodigious talent, Gunter signed for Cardiff City’s youth academy at the age of eight and penned his first professional contract less than two weeks after his 17th birthday in August 2006. The full-back featured 15 times, returning one assist in his debut campaign and, after a further 13 appearances in his second season for the Welsh outfit, was snapped up by Spurs midway through 2007-08 in a deal thought to be worth £2m.

After so much early promise, Gunter’s career came to an abrupt halt at White Hart Lane, however; he made just five league appearances during his time at the club before moving to Forest on loan in March 2009 – the brief loan spell saw Gunter appear eight times and his impressive performances were enough to convince the club to fork out £1.75m for his services in July 2009. From then on, he quickly established himself as a vital first-team member; Gunter has missed just five games in the past three seasons, appearing 133 times for the City Ground side and returning two goals and 13 assists.

The Prospects

There’s no doubt Gunter looks an intriguing option for Fantasy managers eyeing up the Reading defence. Ian Harte initially looked the best bet; with set-piece duties and spot-kicks in the bag, the former Leeds man returned four goals and eight assists in just 32 appearances last term but the subsequent acquisition of Nicky Shorey clearly places plenty doubt around both players’ game time at left-back.

In the middle, it’s a similar scenario. Alex Pearce and Kaspars Gorkss appeared to be nailed-on but Mariappa’s arrival means there is uncertainty over McDermott’s preferred central defensive partnership right now, suggesting Gunter, at right-back, could be the most secure. Last season he returned a goal and five assists; a significant improvement on Cummings’ attacking output, though it should be noted that Mariappa is versatile enough to play at right-back, affording the Royals boss further options in defence.

Priced at 4.0 in both Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and the Sky Sports game, the former Forest man will pick up plenty interest if he manages to cement a role as a regular at the Madejski. The fact that Reading were relatively reliable in terms of home/away defensive returns last term is likely to make it easier for Fantasy managers to bench Gunter when the Royals head out on the road; 12 clean sheets and 18 goals conceded at home compared to eight and 23 respectively away illustrates the fact that McDermott’s men were defensively superior in front of their own fans.

Early interest in Gunter could be tempered by an ankle injury suffered in training that has kept him out of the pre-season reckoning. The latest reports suggest that a scan on the injury revealed no serious damage, indicating that the full-back will be in the equation for the season kick-off.

With a double Gameweek to start off the season as Reading host Stoke before a tricky trip to Chelsea, we should quickly get an idea of McDermott’s thinking for the season ahead. As mentioned above, the home games are likely to be targeted as potential for points but with only Spurs and Newcastle visiting by the end of Gameweek 8, it may well be that we take a step back from Reading’s defensive assets, with their Madejski schedule taking a turn for the better from Gameweek 9 onwards.

Why bad news? From what ive seen Stekelenberg is a pretty good keeper, Ajax are continuing to be a feeder club for the rest of Europe which is a shame, i'd like to see them rise to the European heights again of yesteryear.

Anyway one this is for certain Spurs will have a new No1 this season, which is why I will not get Friedel.

Only because Friedel is available at 5.5, Stek would probably come in at 6 at least. I would say Stek is a world class keeper.

Stek is actually coming from Roma as he left Ajax last summer, I take your point tho. This has always been the Ajax model. Train and develop young players who will eventually leave. It means we always have a young team. It isn't an unpopular policy with the fans either. It is not seen as a feeder system, more of a development centre. When one leaves there is always a youngster ready to replace them

I forgot he went to Roma last year.

Thats fair I do like the idea of a development centre but because of this they will alwyas struggle in Europe. I appreciate money is tight at the moment but i'd like to see Ajax competing again in the CL.

Rating out of 10 before I jump off, slowly getting towards something resembling a happy squad.

    De Gea, Fed

    A.Cole, Taylor.S, Hughes, Cuellar, Fabio

    Bale, Valencia, Larsson, Noble, Maloney

    Aguero, Tevez, Graham

3 Million in bank for Tevez to Rooney switch after GW1. Not sure if i'm comfortable with Hughes, Cuellar and Taylor.S, are they dead certs to start? Could easily switch to Hangeland, Clyne and Colo.

      7/10

almost no chelsea cover for double gameweek
aguero and tezez are a lot of eggs in a singulare (albeit big) basket

lucky you - torres instead of tevez can solve both problems

would also consider finding a place for a city defender

Cheers for reply. Reason for lack of Chelsea attacking coverage is the doubts over midfield sure starters. Personally id rather risk Tevez vs SOU at home over Torres and his two games. Tevez being a powerhouse when he plays, Torres not so much for the last few years.

Heres my back 8 and how im going to utilise my players. I think it is a good tactic but would appreciate any help or advise on this matter.

    GK: Green, Jussi

DF: Vermaelen- Im going to start him in every game, due to his price, goal threat.

Saylor/Cuellar - Perfect rotation, giving me a home fixture for a pretty solid team each week

    Saylor/Cuellar/Clyne/Gunter - 3 way rotation for the 3rd slot

Don't like Verm myself, relies on goals to hit his price expectations. Much prefer a defender whose main source of points is a steady income of clean sheets, e.g. Lescott.

He'll do better clean sheet wise this season. Last season Arsenal spent lot of time with 4 fullbacks injured. That can't really happen two seasons in a row, can it? I'd get him ahead of any other defender at that price.

No sure about that, its not just about who they have on the pitch, its the high line, and lack of communication the have continued to persist with in their friendlies. Man City exposed them regularly.

Four fewer clean sheets for Vermaelen last season (playing less games)
But 4 more goals and an assist

And he scored even more the last full season he played.

I know what you mean about defenders relying on goals - but his minutes per attempt on goal is and always has been almost as high as some midfielders. He will always score goals.

If he can do his actual job as well and keep cleansheets then that's a bonus.

His lack of clean sheets last term was due to the makeshift nature of Arsenal's defence last season. They were down to their kids some of the time. Baring the same number of injuries this season (unlikely) Arsenal will keep more clean sheets and Vermaelen could explode.

That said, Diaby would still be my first choice from Arsenal.

Your paying an extra 1.5 over the next nearest defender in Arsenal though for the goal scoring threat. Big premium imo and you really need to keep Verm over the course of a season to benefit from those goals, as you can never really tell when a defender will score.

True. If he's in my team, he's likely a season keeper. His minutes per attempt is better than some similarly priced midfielders though - Ramires for example. Which is pretty insane considering the extra points available to him.

On Miyaichi - just a rumour at the moment but could go on loan to Wigan. 5.0m

Better mins per chance created than Bale, Valencia, Walcott last season. Albeit playing in Wigan forwards, but still - if he gets the minutes he could be a bit of a steal.

Silva also played a lot last year because Mancini didn't have the option to rest him.

Nasri is now finding his feet and Tevez is back giving them so many more formation options.

No one is safe at City, they will want to win the CL this year making rotation in the league inevitable for all players.

    Right so here's my team.

    Foster
    Ivanovic / Baines / Hangeland
    Siggy / Sess / Michu / Noble
    Torres / Tevez / Bent

    Mignolet / Guthrie / Demel / Cuellar

I have the stanard 2m in the bank for Torres to Rooney, plus I also have and extra 0.5m which I dont want to spend as it will allow me a straight swap with Tevez to Ade or Siggy to Bale or even Sess to Kagawa.

Im happy having Siggy over Bale and I think Sess should be worth his 8.0 price tag.

My only issue with this team is Michu. I have 6.5m and the best three picks I can see are Pienaar, Larsson & Michu. Having Baines & Sess puts me off the first two so Michu is in there. Do we think he is worth the risk with the great fixtures Swansea have?

Id start with Bale over Siggy. Not keen on Baines, everton slow starts and he has to score/assist to make up his premium.

        Thanks for the reply.

If I have Bale of Siggy then if the Tevez punt flops I would need two transfers to swap him to Ade (who is likely to be the main forward at that price I would want). Do you think its worth it?

Torres is a 1 week DGW punt then swaps to Rooney.

Re Baines, alot think he is overpriced but consider this, pretend Baines is a 7.0 midfielder. At 7.0 he would just about score enough assists, goals and bonus to justify his price tag as a midfielder, BUT he also has the bonus of cleansheets for a solid defence to add into the mix?

Id consider downgrading Baines to Lescott and saving the extra 0.5 in that case for your Tevez switch.

Regarding the value of Baines, aside from one exceptional year he has brought home average returns for his price. For less you can get the same from Lescott.

If you believe he will replicate the 2010-2011 season, he is well worth it, but I don't trust relying on goals and assists when it comes to defenders.
