Reading’s summer recruitment drive showed no signs of letting up after the club announced the capture of Chris Gunter from Nottingham Forest in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £2.5m. The 22-year-old arrived at the Madejski Stadium on a three-year contract, with the option of a further year, and is the sixth player to join Brian McDermott’s side since the Royals clinched the npower Championship title last season.

Snapped up on the same day as Adrian Mariappa from Watford, Gunter’s arrival boosts McDermott’s backline options and perhaps puts him in the driving seat to nail down the right-back role ahead of Shaun Cummings for the upcoming campaign. Cummings was the Royals’ first-choice option last time round but failed to impress from an attacking perspective, with no goals or assists to his name; Gunter’s speed and attacking sensibilities should add a key ingredient to the Royals play from deep and affords Fantasy managers an intriguing option in the cut-price bracket.

Upon completion of his move, the new boy revealed McDermott played a major part in persuading him to leave the City Ground after three full seasons as a Forest regular:

You only have to look at what Reading have achieved in the last couple of years to realise what a good manager Brian McDermott is. I also spoke to Garath McCleary when he joined Reading from Nottingham Forest and the first thing he mentioned was the manager too. So when I met Brian myself he was exactly what I expected. He played a massive part in my decision to join this club. I’m yet to meet anyone who has anything but massively positive things to say about him and the club.

The Statistics

A prodigious talent, Gunter signed for Cardiff City’s youth academy at the age of eight and penned his first professional contract less than two weeks after his 17th birthday in August 2006. The full-back featured 15 times, returning one assist in his debut campaign and, after a further 13 appearances in his second season for the Welsh outfit, was snapped up by Spurs midway through 2007-08 in a deal thought to be worth £2m.

After so much early promise, Gunter’s career came to an abrupt halt at White Hart Lane, however; he made just five league appearances during his time at the club before moving to Forest on loan in March 2009 – the brief loan spell saw Gunter appear eight times and his impressive performances were enough to convince the club to fork out £1.75m for his services in July 2009. From then on, he quickly established himself as a vital first-team member; Gunter has missed just five games in the past three seasons, appearing 133 times for the City Ground side and returning two goals and 13 assists.

The Prospects

There’s no doubt Gunter looks an intriguing option for Fantasy managers eyeing up the Reading defence. Ian Harte initially looked the best bet; with set-piece duties and spot-kicks in the bag, the former Leeds man returned four goals and eight assists in just 32 appearances last term but the subsequent acquisition of Nicky Shorey clearly places plenty doubt around both players’ game time at left-back.

In the middle, it’s a similar scenario. Alex Pearce and Kaspars Gorkss appeared to be nailed-on but Mariappa’s arrival means there is uncertainty over McDermott’s preferred central defensive partnership right now, suggesting Gunter, at right-back, could be the most secure. Last season he returned a goal and five assists; a significant improvement on Cummings’ attacking output, though it should be noted that Mariappa is versatile enough to play at right-back, affording the Royals boss further options in defence.

Priced at 4.0 in both Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and the Sky Sports game, the former Forest man will pick up plenty interest if he manages to cement a role as a regular at the Madejski. The fact that Reading were relatively reliable in terms of home/away defensive returns last term is likely to make it easier for Fantasy managers to bench Gunter when the Royals head out on the road; 12 clean sheets and 18 goals conceded at home compared to eight and 23 respectively away illustrates the fact that McDermott’s men were defensively superior in front of their own fans.

Early interest in Gunter could be tempered by an ankle injury suffered in training that has kept him out of the pre-season reckoning. The latest reports suggest that a scan on the injury revealed no serious damage, indicating that the full-back will be in the equation for the season kick-off.

With a double Gameweek to start off the season as Reading host Stoke before a tricky trip to Chelsea, we should quickly get an idea of McDermott’s thinking for the season ahead. As mentioned above, the home games are likely to be targeted as potential for points but with only Spurs and Newcastle visiting by the end of Gameweek 8, it may well be that we take a step back from Reading’s defensive assets, with their Madejski schedule taking a turn for the better from Gameweek 9 onwards.

I have £13.0m to spend on a defender and a midfielder. Preferably one should play for an elite side i.e Manchester City as I am lacking in City players. I have narrowed it down to two options, which would be more effective?

    a) Lescott & Pienaar

    b) Williams & Toure Yaya

Okay then... I said 'key', I never said it's all that matters.

But it's still by far the most important thing in the game, (and captain choice). Obviously they didn't all finish in the top 10, but it's not like you could select them all is it!? That's the flaw with your point.

My point doesn't disagree with your statement though does it... Everybody has £100m, so if you spend this £100m and have the best value, it will score the most points...

'its about the most points from a budget of 100m'

So you're basically saying that the person who gets the best value from their £100m does better? 🙄

No it's not, on the whole the best value players are cheaper. If you bought all the best value players you would not have the most points as your total value would be below 100m, in addition you need players who rotate with each other well and good captain choices. The players who score the most points tend to be expensive and so are not the best value but they will put your ranking higher.

This discussion is pretty convuluted; no offence to anyone.

I think you actually all agree, but its been lost in the haze.

I think its simpler to just say:

Its about packing your team with the value players, getting the more expensive players who aren't good value but get big hauls, and captaining them at the right time.

(The reply system seems to be a bit strange so I have to reply to the initial comment again).

This isn't what we're saying. I was saying that it's 'key' to get points per £. This sounds very obvious, but it is often ignored. I never said 'select all of the best value players', I'm saying that just because a player scores a lot of points, it doesn't mean you should have them.

Urindanger made a comment about the top 10 scorers not being in the top 10 for value - this supports my point that people are ignoring the value for money. The very fact that you can't select all of the top 10 and need to find the best points per £ combination is what I'm trying to get across.

No, I can see that. Rafael and Clichy will get rotated but I rate Utd and City to get more clean sheets and also more likely for attacking returns. Maybe more stressful but ultimately more rewarding imo.

Hey TT, LONG TERM it's great IMHO. Yes, I have to play Wilson at home to Arsenal for example, but I generally get two great home fixtures each week.

47 clean sheets between Ful, New, Sto and Sun. Only New were tight all year round.

Its so annoying so many combos look good once you get past the first few weeks, currently looking for GK combo and most start like a train wreck then become superb. Only thing is I want to get off to a bang this year after a nightmare start last time.

Agree. My back 7 is doing my head in. as I don't to be spending transfers on it.

            Option A:
            Green Davis
            Cole Collo Cuellar Wilson Hughes

            Option B:

Just looking at some betting markets here, and stumbled across Monaco against Laval in Ligue 2 on Friday night. Monaco seem to have kept mostly the same squad from their relegation, and were 4-0 up at half time in their last game. You can get them at well over evens at every bookie for the win, which just seems like printing money. Anyone have an opinion?

If I was going to go down the big hitter route in defence I would go Walker/BAE/Vertoghen over Lescott/Clichy what I see a lot of. A lot of people negative about AVBs defensive approach but these are more mobile than Terry/Ivan at Chelsea and Porto had a great defensive record (Ok it was Portugal), their fixtures are great, can rotate with Gunter and more importantly are nailed on. City are bound to sign another CB so only Kompany interests me and even then Id rather Baines for the start (Why hasn't he been mentioned much? Mark is bound to have him).

If tevez starts gw1 and scores there will be a massive knee jerk for scarface. Lot of people may ship kun. Could be a massive decision for starting the season well.

True. However my seaso for having aguero is that he is nailed on. Tevez isn't. But we won't know for sure until gw1. People who have taken a risk with tevez could reap the benefits.

I think he's 90% nailed as Kun, taking into account how many times Kun is subbed quite early.

I thought Kun was bought to replace Tevez and then they couldn't get the 50m they wanted for Tev so kept. I am leaning towards him over Kun as it offers so many more options and flexibility.

If I was certain Tevez will start GW3 there would be no question I would go with him!

      The way I see it..

      SOT - Aguero Tevez
liv - Aguero Tevez or Aguero lone striker
QPR - Aguero Balo 60% Tevez 40% (Balo to throw strop if he doesnt start)
      stk - Aguero rested

You can't compare two different value defences on there own. The more expensive is obviously better. On the whole how many extra points will your more expensive defence vs how many extra points will your attackers get on a more expensive budget

Find 2 teams where one plays at home and one away each game (Man U/City, New/Sun etc.) then find 2 teams with cheap players that do the same. By 2 cheap defs from those teams so you always have one playing at home and spend the cash saved elsewhere.

Seriously thinking about getting a 4m defender from each of the promoted sides. Works out as decent rotation, and frees up a lot of funds to give me shed loads of big hitters:

    DDG Fed
    Cole Clichy Fonte Gorkss McCartney
    Silva Hazard Mata Maloney Noble
    Rooney Tevez Pog.

Biggest worry is I've trebled up with 3 teams, although 2 of them have DGW, and the other is the Champions who have SOT and QPR in the first 3 GWs.
