Readingโ€™s summer recruitment drive showed no signs of letting up after the club announced the capture of Chris Gunter from Nottingham Forest in a deal rumoured to be in the region of ยฃ2.5m. The 22-year-old arrived at the Madejski Stadium on a three-year contract, with the option of a further year, and is the sixth player to join Brian McDermottโ€™s side since the Royals clinched the npower Championship title last season.

Snapped up on the same day as Adrian Mariappa from Watford, Gunterโ€™s arrival boosts McDermottโ€™s backline options and perhaps puts him in the driving seat to nail down the right-back role ahead of Shaun Cummings for the upcoming campaign. Cummings was the Royalsโ€™ first-choice option last time round but failed to impress from an attacking perspective, with no goals or assists to his name; Gunterโ€™s speed and attacking sensibilities should add a key ingredient to the Royals play from deep and affords Fantasy managers an intriguing option in the cut-price bracket.

Upon completion of his move, the new boy revealed McDermott played a major part in persuading him to leave the City Ground after three full seasons as a Forest regular:

You only have to look at what Reading have achieved in the last couple of years to realise what a good manager Brian McDermott is. I also spoke to Garath McCleary when he joined Reading from Nottingham Forest and the first thing he mentioned was the manager too. So when I met Brian myself he was exactly what I expected. He played a massive part in my decision to join this club. I’m yet to meet anyone who has anything but massively positive things to say about him and the club.

The Statistics

A prodigious talent, Gunter signed for Cardiff Cityโ€™s youth academy at the age of eight and penned his first professional contract less than two weeks after his 17th birthday in August 2006. The full-back featured 15 times, returning one assist in his debut campaign and, after a further 13 appearances in his second season for the Welsh outfit, was snapped up by Spurs midway through 2007-08 in a deal thought to be worth ยฃ2m.

After so much early promise, Gunterโ€™s career came to an abrupt halt at White Hart Lane, however; he made just five league appearances during his time at the club before moving to Forest on loan in March 2009 โ€“ the brief loan spell saw Gunter appear eight times and his impressive performances were enough to convince the club to fork out ยฃ1.75m for his services in July 2009. From then on, he quickly established himself as a vital first-team member; Gunter has missed just five games in the past three seasons, appearing 133 times for the City Ground side and returning two goals and 13 assists.

The Prospects

Thereโ€™s no doubt Gunter looks an intriguing option for Fantasy managers eyeing up the Reading defence. Ian Harte initially looked the best bet; with set-piece duties and spot-kicks in the bag, the former Leeds man returned four goals and eight assists in just 32 appearances last term but the subsequent acquisition of Nicky Shorey clearly places plenty doubt around both playersโ€™ game time at left-back.

In the middle, itโ€™s a similar scenario. Alex Pearce and Kaspars Gorkss appeared to be nailed-on but Mariappaโ€™s arrival means there is uncertainty over McDermottโ€™s preferred central defensive partnership right now, suggesting Gunter, at right-back, could be the most secure. Last season he returned a goal and five assists; a significant improvement on Cummingsโ€™ attacking output, though it should be noted that Mariappa is versatile enough to play at right-back, affording the Royals boss further options in defence.

Priced at 4.0 in both Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and the Sky Sports game, the former Forest man will pick up plenty interest if he manages to cement a role as a regular at the Madejski. The fact that Reading were relatively reliable in terms of home/away defensive returns last term is likely to make it easier for Fantasy managers to bench Gunter when the Royals head out on the road; 12 clean sheets and 18 goals conceded at home compared to eight and 23 respectively away illustrates the fact that McDermottโ€™s men were defensively superior in front of their own fans.

Early interest in Gunter could be tempered by an ankle injury suffered in training that has kept him out of the pre-season reckoning. The latest reports suggest that a scan on the injury revealed no serious damage, indicating that the full-back will be in the equation for the season kick-off.

With a double Gameweek to start off the season as Reading host Stoke before a tricky trip to Chelsea, we should quickly get an idea of McDermottโ€™s thinking for the season ahead. As mentioned above, the home games are likely to be targeted as potential for points but with only Spurs and Newcastle visiting by the end of Gameweek 8, it may well be that we take a step back from Readingโ€™s defensive assets, with their Madejski schedule taking a turn for the better from Gameweek 9 onwards.

I'd worry about what you're going to do when Aguero/Rooney/RVP go on a great scoring run. No easy way to get a couple of them in. Tevez isn't a viable alternative in the long run imo.

My suggestion : Kagawa to Taarabt, Tevez to Aguero

Neither. If you really have to, imo Guthrie is best at 4.5 but surely you can edge out another 0.5 somewhere for Maloney/Noble.

        Already got Noble, my team:
        Friedel/Federici
        Rafael/A.Cole/Clichy/Cuellar/Gunter
        Kagawa/Lampard/Pienaar/Noble/Britton or El Ahmadi
        Torres/Aguero/Petric

2.5 for Torres-Rooney and Lampard-Bale. I could go for Sigurdsson over Bale which would give me an extra 0.5?

          Much prefer Bale to Sigurdsson.

What about downgrading Kagawa? To maybe Sinclair/Taarabt/N'Zog/Larsson?

Then you could get say Taarabt and Larsson for Britton and Kagawa.

And spend the 0.5 on upgrading Clichy to Lescott.

I think the points difference between Kagawa and Taarabt etc would be too great to make that viable, I'm not planning on playing Britton/whoever would replace him that much. I have a very good feeling about Kagawa, bit of a punt but I reckon he will be a very high scorer.

Think of the anguish when Mancini subs him on 59 at home to QPR at 2-0 and then benches him for Kolarov at home to West Ham!

๐Ÿ™‚ It's all about gut instinct in GW1, no reliable form to go by so you may well go well. I just think you are over playing HBA's ability a bit and i certainly wouldn't put him in the category of 'dangerous to exclude' or whatever.

Kaboul to Hughes: Kaboul isn't nailed on which is unacceptable for a 5.5 defender
Ba to Petric: First 2 GWs are tough(Maybe use a transfer in GW3)
Rooney to Torres(Rooneys first fixture is tough, torres has dgw bring rooney back GW 2 or 3)

What is your take on Cabaye in that case? I had considered him as a cheaper alternative but thought Ba would be a more consistent scorer. I also considered barfa but went with Ba since he seems to have come back to a more central position again. I know NC doesnt have the greatest schedule to start off but i feel like i need some kind of coverage from that team...

I like your midfield so I would'nt bring in Cabaye. Pardew did not start Ba until Ramadan had finished last year. So maybe play a it safe with 3:5:2 for G1. Cheers

I doubt it, may be a way of getting players fit, will get forward though. Playing him left mid, also is also useful in case he is required at left back.

I'd be a lier if I said it wasn't my aim to finish as high as I could each year and that's what I strive for. I don't join loads of leagues, I just try to be the best i can overall. I have had amazingly consistent scores in the three years that I have played (only one point between the three scores, two the same)! but with massive difference in ranking, all underwhelming. There are people on here with brilliant rankings consistently whose opinion I really value, there are others who have excellent rankings who talk shit.
I like to think that I mostly talk sense, some would disagree and that's their right, but it annoys me when if I offer an opinion people ask me my rank. I offer my opinions with good intention and it's up to you if you heed it...if you need to know my rank then just ignore my advice. If someone offers an opinion I look at it, assess it's merits or otherwise and then decide whether to listen to it. I care not what the previous rank of the poster was, good advive is good advice and bad is bad regardless of rank.

There was certainly a lot of new faces last season and many of them have become regulars. Will be interesting to see if things grow again this season and FFS becomes even more busy. I suspect it will prove to be the case. Comes with its own pros and cons of course.

What's your target for this season WR? Personally my aim is always top 1k.

        2009/10 ...... 2035 (300k +) but din't have a clue

This is a great point Wild Rover couldn't agree more. Especially with myself I have not had the best ranks as I am willing to show, but I don't think that should take away from the quality of my advice, because for all I know I might finish in the top 20k this year.

I like the look of Swansea and QPR defensive rotation. There's only about 3 or 4 bad weeks up until January and I expect both sides to be decent at home. I've think I'm going with Williams and Fabio. If it doesn't work out there's plenty of decent defenders in that price range to switch to.

    Morning all

I think I'll rate my own team:

    Green Davies

    Cole Dawson Rangel Clyne Demel

    Kagawa Mata Siggy Noble Maloney

    Rooney Graham Aguero

    • Keepers - Very poor. No clean sheets there. Get De Gea and Federici
    • Defence - Dawson may not start and AVB's high line means catastrophe. Swansea may have second season syndrome. Southampton and West Ham poor defensively. Cole is OK.
    • Midfield - Kagawa unproven in Premier League. Mata knackered already and rotation risk. Maloney and Noble are rubbish and the wrong price. Go Bale over Siggy.
    • Attack - Rooney overweight and may play in midfield. Swansea low scorers. Aguero OK but maybe Tevez is better value. It's all about value.

Overall - 3 out of 15. Start again.
