Sam Allardyce continued his summer of squad restructuring earlier this week by bringing James Collins back to West Ham on a four-year contract. After spending three years at Aston Villa, the centre-half returns to Upton Park in a deal thought to be in the region of £2.5m and offers the Hammers plenty of top-flight experience in the heart of defence for the season ahead:

The move ends a summer of speculation which has linked the Welshman with a number of clubs following the arrival of Paul Lambert to Villa Park. With the former Norwich boss adding Dutchman Ron Vlaar to the ranks, Collins’ days appeared numbered at the midlands outfit and, as he revealed to the club’s official website, the chance of coming back to east London was one that he simply could not refuse:

It’s great to be back. As soon as I knew the interest was there from West Ham I couldn’t wait to get down and sign. I had a great affinity with the club and the fans when I was here the first time and I enjoyed my time here so much last time that it wasn’t a hard decision to make, to be honest. I think everyone knew that I didn’t really want to leave when I did [in 2009] because I was enjoying my time here so much. I’ve come back and I’m a much better player this time around so I can’t wait to get cracking and show the fans that I am a better player and can put in the performances on the pitch.

The Statistics

Collins’ career began in his native country with Cardiff City. Joining the club as a trainee in August 2000, he made his debut three months later in the FA Cup but initially struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular – over the course of five seasons at the club he made just 66 league appearances and scored three goals before West Ham came calling in 2005.

A combination of injury and competition from others blighted his first stint with the Hammers, however; Collins failed to play half of his side’s league games in any of his four seasons at Upton Park and managed just two goals in 51 league matches. He made his way to Aston Villa on the final day of the 2009 summer transfer window and finally nailed down a regular spot at the midlands outfit. Striking up a partnership with Richard Dunne, he was a key member of Villa’s backline and featured 91 times over his three seasons in the top-flight, finding the net on five occasions.

Collins has also turned out for his country at every level from Under 19 to Under 21 and has scored twice in 39 appearances for the senior side.

The Prospects

Collins’ arrival at Upton Park looks set to place major question marks over the game time of Winston Reid in the heart of the Hammers’ backline. The New Zealand international missed three months of last season with a shoulder injury and resultantly made just 30 starts – James Tomkins, in comparison, began all but one of the league games in Allardyce’s first campaign and certainly looks to be in the driving seat to partner Collins in the upcoming campaign.

Of the three promoted clubs, West Ham returned the fewest clean sheets – they accrued 17 last time out and, with just seven from 23 home matches, it’s obvious they need to tighten up at the back if they are to stand any chance of staying afloat. From a Fantasy perspective, however, Collins is likely to suffer from his initial pricing as a Villa player – coming in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he is more expensive than all of his defensive team mates; bearing in mind that George McCartney and Guy Demel are priced as little as 4.0, he should struggle to pick up investment if either of the aforementioned pair can nail down a role at left-back and right-back respectively. It’s a similar scenario in the Sky Sports game, too; Collins comes at a cost of 5.4 – prior to his arrival, Tomkins was the priciest Hammers defender at a mere 4.1.

It’s a frustrating situation for Fantasy managers as Collins’ game is clearly suited to the EA Sports Player Performance Index. Last term, he picked up 12 bonus points – the same as Vincent Kompany, for example, and the second highest for Villa, despite their poor performances under Alex McLeish.

Certainly, the Hammers’ strong opening schedule is likely to see substantial investment come their way. Ironically, Collins welcomes his former club to Upton Park in the first Gameweek of the season and with home clashes against Fulham and Sunderland, in addition to trips to (swa, nor, qpr), he certainly has the potential to produce the points early on, though that price tag will almost certainly be enough to deter the vast majority looking for a route into Allardyce’s defence.

Tough one. I'd say B as I'd rather have Utd defensive coverage thanks Spurs. Siggy is a bit more of a risk than Bale, but I reckon he has the quality to nail down the in the hole position as his own (VDV playing in place of Modric at CM, as he does for his country).

Do you honestly think Balotelli won't make any PL starts?

Not doubting that Tevez and Aguero are 1st choice pair but there's no way Mario won't get some starts. And Aguero is less likely (but still possible) to be left out for Balotelli, when Mancini wants to give him gametime in the PL.

ATM, everything points to having Tevez ahead of Aguero IMO.

Good pre season, Aguero playing in a friendly 3 days prior to first game, first game is against Southampton so full strength isn't needed, he's £2.5 mill cheaper.

Having said that, he'll probably start Balotelli and Dzeko

Good pre-season? how about Agueros? 1 goal and 2 assists last time round.
Almost every time Aguero and Tevez have played together for City, it has been Aguero in all the points, even before Tevez pissed off for half a season, Aguero was the one who got a hat-trick vs Wigan when Tevez played, and it was only a couple of howlers from Norwich that Tevez was able to get anything when he returned.
Everything points to Aguero for me.

I completely agree that Aguero is the better player and has had a good pre season also. However, it's all about saving money, and £2.5 mill is huge tbh. If he is gonna be starting regularly, he is likely to score a similar number of points, probably a bit less but those points can be made up through buying better players with the money you've saved.

          Up to you

Yeah it's annoying but there's no point having someone who you never know if they'll start or not. It just doesn't work and you end up with loads of 1 pointers from them.

If you really need a 4.5, Guthrie's the best pick imo. Should be nailed on to start and an excellent player who pops up with goals from time to time.

What are your thoughts on my team

    Friedel - Federici
    Ivanovic - Clichy - Williams - Demel - Clyne
    Silva - Hazard - Holman - Maloney - Guthrie
    Aguero - Torres - Graham

2.0m spare for Torres -> Rooney

Clichy will be rotated, pay the extra for Lescott.

Prefer Petric to Graham at 6.0 up top.

Other than that I quite like it. Holman could be a great differential, lots are underestimating Villa imo. I've gone for N'Zog as he's more proven but Holman could do very well if given starts.

imo Villa will be strong up front but have an extremely heavy unbalance in the strength of their defence compared to their strike force. Could see some high scoring games with Villa

Good point about Clichy. I like Graham's set of fixtures and I think there's more safety with him rather than Petric as fulham have a few other attackers up their sleeve whereas Graham is the only person who can really play up top. Yea I agree with Holman after watching him plasy for both club and country I can say that he;s very creative and is always invovled in the attacking aspects of the team and I reckon he could be a steal at 6.0. I'm finding it hard to find 0.5 to upgrade to lescott without damaging my team's vision.

I don't see spurs keeping many clean sheets under AVB so friedel for me isn't worth 5.5

Tomkins is not a defender worthy of a starting slot imo

Valencia is in the usual United rotation risk situation in midfield

That's a pretty good team and I like the Walcott pick - he scored a load of points and played well at the back end of last season before he was injured.
Not sure about Graham though. He averaged a goal every 236 minutes over the season and made only 3 assists. Djerbil Cisse scored a goal every 88 minutes and costs only .5 more. Of course we can't really compare the two as Cisse only played 533 minutes ( and got sent off twice ). Valencia and Graham is a more stable pick but Kagawa and Cisse are very appealing.

united will line up with a 4-2-3-1 kagawa plays one position in the hole behind a main striker so effectively taking one of the strikers roles..

            carrick cleverley

            valencia kagawa nani/young

            rooney

with all top teams squad rotation will occur quite a bit but out of uniteds attacking midfielders valencia is with out doubt going to be more "nailed on" than any other.. not bull just simple..

Trust me unless Kagawa is the next Ronaldo there is no way that he is missing the usual "everyone but roooney rotation". I have watched every United game from the Ronaldoless era and every 3 or 4 games 1 or 2 players are dropped for now apparent reason.

      Unlikely I'd say tbh.

When he was fit last season he looked a threat and was just edging himself into starting contention and then he got injured again. If he can manage to stay fit (big issue for him) and put some performances in in the Europa League and Carling Cup he could get himself into contention, especially if one of Gutierrez and Ben Arfa gets injured.

Looks similar to mine, so you must be spot on. I have aguero so 2.5 m taken out of goal and mid.

I need someone to give me a clear idea on Kagawa.
He seems to be a very good choice at that price but will he be playing in the advanced role in MU and will he even get a start?
