Stewart Downing picks up the plaudits with a brilliant match-winner as Liverpool record a 1-0 victory in Belarus. Sir Alex Ferguson reveals Nemanja Vidic is ready to return for United’s remaining friendlies, while Chris Brunt admits he is struggling for fitness in time for the new season after picking up a calf problem:

FC Gomel 0 Liverpool 1
Brendan Rodgers chalked up a win and a clean sheet on his competitive debut as Liverpool boss last night. The former Swansea manager named a strong lineup for the Europa League third round qualifier, handing Steven Gerrard a role as the most advanced midfielder, while Fabio Borini led the line with Joe Cole and Stewart Downing on the flanks. Borini and Glen Johnson both had chances before Cole was withdrawn midway through the first-half after picking up a hamstring problem, but it’s fair to say Liverpool were lucky to go in level at half-time after their hosts spurned plenty of opportunities to break the deadlock. Martin Kelly and Lucas came on as subs in the second 45, with the latter continuing his comeback from a knee injury, though the Reds continued to lead a charmed life as Gomel spurning chance after chance. Stewart Downing eventually made the home side pay for their profligacy by firing home a superb 25-yard effort for the only goal of the game on 67 minutes – Borini had a chance to double the Reds’ lead and although he fluffed his lines, Rodgers’ men kept possession well to see out the victory.

Liverpool Starting XI: Jones; Johnson (Kelly 46), Carragher, Skrtel, Enrique; Henderson (Lucas), Spearing, Gerrard; Downing, Borini, Cole (Sterling 22)

The Liverpool centre-halves made the headlines for various reasons last night, Jamie Carragher marked his 700th game for the club, while Martin Skrtel’s display at the back earned him man of the match but the main talking point surrounded Daniel Agger. Initial reports suggested the Dane was absent for the 1-0 win due to a knock but – with Barcelona and Man City both rumoured to be eying up a move – the player’s agent was somewhat cryptic, going on to say:

He is not injured in any way. Only the club and the manager can answer to why he is not in the squad. But the reports of Agger handing in a transfer request are purely nonsense. He is very happy at Liverpool.

In Other News…
Only a couple of weeks ago, Sir Alex Ferguson had doubted whether Nemanja Vidic would be ready in time for the new season but yesterday the United boss revealed his skipper is well on the road to recovery and will feature in the club’s three upcoming friendlies. With Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling still unavailable, Vidic’s return is a timely boost for United’s backline ahead of their opener with Everton on Monday August 20, though Ferguson also hinted that Phil Jones could get the nod at right-back, due to the fact that Rafael is still involved in the Olympics with Brazil:

Chris Smalling is out for 10 weeks with his metatarsal operation and Jonny Evans is still just in light training. They’re big losses at the moment and they will miss the start of the season. Rafael is away [on international duty with Brazil at the Olympics] and Fabio is away on loan so there are four defensive players that we don’t have for the back four positions. We do have Phil Jones, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra, though. That will be the back four on tour. Hopefully we don’t get any more injuries as it would leave me a bit short.

Chris Brunt has admitted he is struggling to make the start of the season for West Brom. The Irishman has failed to feature in the club’s recent friendlies due to a calf problem and with just over two weeks until the new campaign kicks off, is yet to return to full training. Speaking to the press yesterday, the Baggies midfielder conceded:

I’ve had a couple of decent days this week and I’m hoping if everything goes alright I’ll be back in full training next week. It’s really frustrating because I’ve missed out on a lot of fitness work as well. Also, I haven’t played any football yet – other than the few training sessions I got involved in. The nature of the injury means it’s difficult for me to run on it, which is a bit of a nightmare. If I want to be involved against Liverpool I’m going to have to play some football.

What are everyone's thoughts on Kagawa? I'm plumping for Aguero over Rooney and dont want to afford both, so where are United's other attacking points gonna come from?

I reckon Kags is actually the most nailed on of their (attacking) midfielders. If memory serves Fergie likes to throw new signings in to the mix straight away...

No offense, but the situations not being equal, those stats mean little.

What teams were they against, those minutes? Were they playing together? What effect did the Tevez saga have upon his form when back playing? What effect did the rest of the team's form have on those numbers (Silva's late-season drop in form, for example)?

Meh on stats. I watch the games and Tevez is the spark, the prime mover, of that offense. I'll take him and 2.5, thank you.

ROSCOLA: What we all do best at work, Ross. 😉

Equally excited myself - more so for Chelsea's prospects in the domestic scene. Things are looking bright. Now, only if Torres could... *insert classic Christopher Nolan ending*

Hope to achieve the top 1k at the very least, come end of season. It'd be extremely difficult to replicate. Just ended up being very very lucky in the last 6 weeks.

Settled on your team eh? Doubt you'll be so sure a week before the deadline. Things have just about started rattling a bit. Expect more injuries, rotation due to intl. friendlies, rumored starters, Mark's player of the season (ala Moses) and course, signings...to cause chaos amongst your current team chemistry. I haven't gotten to my team yet - there's just so much uncertainty to do anything.

Meanwhile, simply enjoying watching Olympics footy. Best intl. footy I've watched for a while. Brazil are simply world-class eh? They're playing on a different level compared to other teams.

        ???

At his best, he can be more technical. He also rarely plays defense and is wasteful on the ball, often. Too delicate mentally, as well.

How you can possibly compare him to Kagawa is a mystery.

Valencia is a far better crosser of the ball and plays defense. He's also not a self-obsessed git like Nani.

And Nani was never a top fpl player.

I'm not arguing that Young is a better FPL player, btw. I agree that Nani is 'explosive' ... which means he does fa all game or for several games and then finally does something. Maybe a brace and an assist. Good for points, terrible for FPL consistency.

But let's not ignore that Forca throws down smacktalk and responds with a limp +1. Nicely defended, Forca. Take a shower.

2 seasons ago he was hurt by Carragher and absolutely imploded for the remainder of the season. He was a shambles, mentally.

And his 'top player' stats can be explained in ways far too lengthy for me to attempt ... but take a look at his numbers and the top numbers for any other year. He's a pretender.

Not a huge fan of the new Newcastle strip, it's too white and looks to much like the West Brom strip for my liking. I am a fan of the burgundy away kit though...but I miss the yellow Championship one 🙂

Who would people say the best Sunderland defender would be? Trying to be slightly more frugal with my defence so I can improve my midfield.

Is this Chelsea DGW worth 3 players? (Iva, Torres, Oscar)

Oscar is quite risky for the first 2 GWs anyway, they will more than likely give him bit parts in both weeks

Torres I'd say is worthwhile, Iva has a certain charm even though I'm not positive Chelsea will keep many cleansheets even against weaker teams and I'd just say no on Oscar as he's far too risky.

Hello all, I'm the new guy here! I really looking forward to getting involved here... love what you do!

I have never posted a team for people to rate, so here goes...

    Friedel- Federici
    ACole - Clichy - Koscielny - Hageland - McCartney
    Silva - Mata - McClean - Noble - Britton
    Kun - Torres - Pog

The Chelsea guys will get cleared out after the 2 game week and i have 1m in the bank... Looking at adding Bale for Mata pretty quickly...

    Any thoughts?

Looks good. No United cover is an issue, and I'd question whether Mata or McClean will star so brightly this season but you did say you were shipping the blues out. For who though?

Clichy not nailed on and i'm not sure about Big Brede, nailed on certainly but there's better options around his price range. Newcastle defenders namely, or Fabio, Bardsley, Ridgewell, Collins for a punt or a Swansea defender given their fixtures and superior clean sheets to fulham.

Anyone captaining a Chelsea defender? I'm considering it, but torn between that, Hazard, and Aguero (no Torres)

I think if your delving out money on Chelsea attacking players for the DGW then you have to captain one of them

You don't have to plump for a Chelsea player, I'm choosing between Cole/Haz/Aguero. I think it's wiser to take a punt on Haz/Aguero as they have easy fixtures and imo it's far easier to score against weak opposition than keep a clean sheet against them.

Valencia is out wide, Kagawa is through the centre so he's not affected by the trio competition with Young and Nani. I think he has a better chance of starting over the latter mentioned wingers as Kagawa's only real competition would be Welbeck (since SAF has leant towards Welbeck over Hernandez consistently this past season).

I think the uncertainty around De Gea's starts means that you want a nailed on backup.
