Tony Pulis added another wide man to Stoke Cityโ€™s ranks earlier this week after snapping up Michael Kightly for a fee believed to be in the region of ยฃ2m. The 26-year-old arrives at the Britannia on a long-term deal from neighbours Wolves and is expected to push for a starting role in the upcoming campaign:

Having tasted relegation with the Molineux outfit only a matter of months ago, Kightly was clearly a relieved man to be given another bite of the Premier League cherry. Speaking to the Pottersโ€™ official website upon completion of the move, he enthused:

Itโ€™s a great club; an established Premier League club, so I am delighted to be here. Any footballer wants to play at the highest level and I am grateful to Stoke for giving me the chance to stay in the Premier League. The Club sold itself to me. What they have achieved over the past few years has been remarkable. Then thereโ€™s the excellent facilities and, of course, the supporters. So, itโ€™s definitely a Club that is moving in the right direction.

The Statistics

Kightly began his career in the Tottenham youth ranks but returned to hometown club Basildon United after being released by the London outfit. Having scored 11 goals in 18 matches, he caught the eye of Southend United and was handed a two-year deal in 2003 but struggled to make any sort of impact. Over 13 games, the winger failed to find the net and was farmed out to Farnborough Town but his temporary spell was largely underwhelming; no goals in 11 games saw him return to Southend, where he was released by then-boss Steve Tilson.

Greys Athletic then came to the rescue ahead of the 2005-06 campaign. Over his season-and-a-half at the club, Kightly finally began to produce the goods; 52 games harvested 24 goals and earned a loan move to Wolves where, after notching twice in his first five matches, he signed a permanent deal. The wingerโ€™s first three seasons at Molineux hinted at huge potential; he returned 20 goals and 30 assists over 80 appearances, with the 2008/09 campaign alone producing eight goals and 19 assists, but since then, his game time has been dramatically reduced by injury. Ankle and metatarsal problems have limited Kightly to just 31 games for Wolves in the past three seasons, where he returned four goals and a couple of assists. A four-month loan spell at Watford midway through last term saw him find the net three times in 12 games before returning to the midlands club in January 2012.

The Prospects

With a mere 36 goals to their name last season, the Potters were the lowest scorers in the Premier League and Pulis revealed Kightlyโ€™s acquisition was a major factor in addressing this statistic. Attacking threat from the flanks was somewhat diminished in 2011/12 โ€“ Matthew Etherington scored three times while Jermaine Pennant failed to find the net at all, a factor their manager acknowledged:

There is nothing better than to have strong competition in all areas of the squad and Michaelโ€™s arrival will give us that in the wide positions. Iโ€™ve long been an admirer of Michael, not only in terms of him being a provider, but also the fact that he gets his share of goals. Our two wingers, Matthew Etherington and Jermaine Pennant, have been brilliant over the past few years, but they went off the boil in terms of goalscoring last season, so we wanted to address that. Competition for places will bring the best out of them again and that is what Michaelโ€™s presence will give us in that area.

With Etherington likely to continue in the left flank role, Pennant looks the most at risk here. The latter made just 18 starts for Stoke last season, with Jon Walters and Ryan Shotton both handed game time on the right of midfield. Walters now seems likely to continue solely up front rather than drop back onto the wing on occasion, boosting his potential as an out-of-position prospect in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

While he has yet to be added to the Sky Sports game Kightly has been handed a 5.5 price tag by FPL – the same as Pennant and 1.0 less than Etherington โ€“ and, if he can nail down a regular role, his delivery from out wide will be a valuable asset to the likes of Peter Crouch up top and could, potentially, propel the former Wolves man as a viable mid-price asset for our consideration.

The Pottersโ€™ opening schedule is likely to see Fantasy managers approach the Stoke squad with plenty trepidation, however. With showdowns against Arsenal, City, Chelsea, Liverpool and United in the first eight Gameweeks, Pulisโ€™ men could hardly ask for a trickier start and, while some may feel trips to Reading and Wigan could prove prosperous, itโ€™s worth remembering the Stoke picked up a dire three points in their last nine away matches of 2011/12. Fantasy investment can be expected around the Gameweek 9 mark, however, when the fixture list smiles significantly kinder on Kightly and co.

Kelly will probably be behing Reither in Fulham's pecking order. Go with Hughes if you want Fulham coverage for the same price but even then I wouldn't be over confident.

Looks decent elsewhere. I like the Nolan selection, I've seen too much of Noble (including in my own team) lately.

Thanks, mate..Really, you think so, Hughes ahead of Kelly? Hughes played so much less minutes than Kelly last season. What gives you the hint that Hughes will be better?

Hughes looks like he'll start alongside Hangeland at CB. Kelly's a RB where they've now got Reither who's played most of pre-season. There's no question that Hughes will get more minutes than Kelly but that's not going to be that tough a task in fairness so I'm not tipping Hughes for exceptional returns. The value in the Fulham defence lies in Hangeland

Hey guys, RT please as I am a new member now !!

    Fridel – Frederici

Cole – Jones (or clichy)?? – Rangel (or Hangeland ??) – McCartney – Gunter

    Yaya – Hazard – Valencia – Guthrie – Noble

    Aguero – Torres – Petric

1M in the bank (Torres–>Tevez & Hazard –>Bale or Kagawa on GW 3)

What do you think of that ?

Should I change some players ?

So, are people having a city defender?

At the moment I don't have one but it's killing me knowing how tight they are.

I just feel with the uncertainty around their 6m options and 'mixed' first 6 fixtures I would prefer to look for a 5m with better fixtures, but it hurts me....

Anyone else having similar thoughts or doubts?

I've gone without one but that's mostly due to going 1 big hitter and then 2x2. With the DGW the big hitter is inevitably a Chelsea DF. If I was going 2 big hitters and 3 cheapies I would've probably got Clichy though.

I can see Aguero being a real pain in the arse this season. You really want him but with Tevez, Balotelli, Dzeko and Barndoor possibly all lurking he is sure not to play every game. In fact might only do 70% what with CL targets etc..

Rooney however will probably play 80-90%, but he is way too fat. Discuss....

Apologies in advance for the long post but I really need your help and advice on this

Who is the best 2DFs and MF to have for 16m

    Rest of Team is

    Federici Vorm

    Cole Hangeland Fonte

    Lampard Bale Noble McAnuff

    Aguero Rooney Petric

Reasons for Team Setup which is 3-4-3

GKs - Fed and Vorm (rotating)

DFs - Cole (big hitter) Hangeland and Fonte (rotating) - so either a big hitter and 4m bench warmer or another rotating pair

MFs - Lampard, Bale (big hitters) Noble and McAnuff (rotating) - so need another MF who will play every week in the team

    ATs - Play all 3

In GW3 will then do Cole > Man C/Man U DF and Lampard > Man C/Man U MF or Cazoria

Any help and advice would be appreciated

That was my understanding as well. Just because he's fit to play GW1 doesn't mean he will play in both games though, especially with Reading at home being an 'easy' fixture.

    Valencia Mata Bale Pienaar Noble
    Aguero Tevez Graham

Plan is to keep one 7 mill defender at the back at all times(Baines/Vidic GW 2). Tevez and Aguero will do ok first 3 gameweeks. Will then downgrade one of them to the sub 10 mill striker who strikes form. ๐Ÿ™‚

Is anyone planning to WC after GW3 as a deliberate tactic? It is early but it is a tactic I've used before to good effect. We know at that stage who's playing, and for whom. It also allows you to increase team value as the 2 week international break normally sees significant increases in value for some players.

It does change my initial selection though as I'd only be concerned with GWs 1-3. Decisions, decisions...

My thoughts on expensive defenders based on last season are......with the exception of kompany and Vera there was only about 20-30 points difference between the so called big hitters and the moderately priced refs from the 5million price ranges. Ie: less than 1 point per game over the season. In midfield the difference between big hitters and mid range mids was quite a bit more leading me towards favouring savings in defence and upgrading mids to big hitters. Do people think this will change this season, and why?

No, midfielders and forwards are much more likely to score/assist which can often result in double figure point hauls which are more likely for players in good teams. The majority of points defenders score come from clean sheets so they rarely break into double figures, even if they play for a top six side.

Yeah I get that, but the figures from last season have got me thinking that better to invest that extra 1.5 in a mid rather than a defender. I also can't see city being as tight at the back especially if Mancini is going to fiddle about with formations although I would expect both arsenal and united to be tighter this year with both verm and vidicon back. Still not convinced on vfm in expensive though, Just my thoughts

Man United have got 4 midfielders that will create loads for Rooney and chip in with goals. But the question is, who plays week in week out? Valencia, Nani, Kagawa, Ashley Young. If your going with 1 from the start, your gonna have to make sure you've chosen the one that will play a lot. Cleverley is also at a good price, but will he play week in, week out in the middle?

The best thing is to see what sort of team Ferguson is looking at in the early games and then making the changes quickly, if you haven't got them already.
