Roberto Martinez made his third foray into the summer transfer market earlier this week by acquiring the services of Ryo Miyaichi from Arsenal in a season-long loan deal. The 19-year old follows Fraser Fyvie and Ivan Ramis to the club and has since been joined by Arouna Kone from Levante as the Latics boss continues to bolster his first-team options:

Having finally struck upon a winning formula after moving to a 3-4-2-1 in the latter part of the previous campaign, Martinez is now in the process of fine-tuning his system, bringing in players who will flourish within the new formation. Miyaichi’s trickery on the ball and intelligent passing play looks an ideal fit for Wigan and the manager clearly anticipates the player to make a big impact in the season ahead:

The way we play, I think he’s going to fit in really, really well. As we’ve done previously with players that have come on loan, they’ve really found an important role, they’ve really found themselves feeling at home and we’ve seen the best of their football ability – so that’s the case with Ryo. We’re looking forward to seeing him here.

The Statistics
Miyaichi signed his first professional contract at the Emirates in January last year after impressing in a trial in the summer of 2010. Loaned out to Dutch club Feyenoord in the latter half of the 2010/11 campaign, he made an immediate impact – named man of the match on his debut, he went on to score three times and provide five assists over 12 starts.

Granted a work permit for the start of last season, Miyaichi was no more than a peripheral figure for the Gunners, though, and was reduced to reserve outings and League Cup matches before sustaining an ankle injury in November. Upon recovering, he was farmed out on loan to Bolton, where he provided a couple of assist in 12 games but his displays were not enough to save the Trotters from the drop.

Miyaichi has represented his country at every level from Under 15 to Under 21, scoring six goals in 19 matches, and also made his debut for the senior side earlier this year.

The Prospects

The future of Victor Moses is likely to have a considerable say in Miyaichi’s projected game time over the season ahead. The former Crystal Palace man has already been the subject of a number of failed bids from Chelsea but if he does finally clinch a move to the Bridge, Miyaichi is surely set to be handed a regular starting role in one of the two positions behind a lone striker. There is also the possibility, though, that if Moses stays, Miyaichi could impact heavily on the game time of Shaun Maloney, bearing in mind that the latter has had his fair share of injuries over the last couple of years. Although Maloney’s appeal is boosted by his spot-kick duties, Miyaichi could be handed a fair share of corners by Martinez; similar to the situation that transpired upon his loan move to Bolton under Owen Coyle.

While Moses comes in at 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), both Maloney and Miyaichi offer potential in the cut-price bracket – both will set you back 5.0 in comparison. In the Sky Sports game, however, Miyaichi comes in at 4.6 compared to Moses’ 6.9 – somewhat surprisingly, Maloney is also 6.9 and is classified as a forward; clearly, the new boy looks the most intriguing option to Fantasy managers here.

Before looking at the schedule, it’s worth remembering that Wigan served us an emphatic reminder last time round that form is a better barometer than fixtures when assessing their options – wins over United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle, in a run that saw them rack up seven victories in their last nine in 2011/12, stand testament to that.

Martinez will hold no fear heading into Sunday’s opener at home to a Chelsea side that have tasted defeat in all four of their previous matches, then, while home clashes with Stoke and Fulham, allied with a trip to Southampton within the first six Gameweeks, all look prosperous. For Fantasy managers, let’s hope Roman Abramovich opens the chequebook once again and quickly snaps up Moses, affording us a cheap route into Martinez’s midfield with plenty potential for attacking points.

A Postcard from Tenby - skip if not in FFS UEFA or not interested

“Such a shame the games are over” Mr CatMac sighed. What? Oh he means the Olympics. I leave him to his umpteenth re-run of the “glorious moments”, hear the 4 grandkids bickering in the background over the last piece of toast, and gaze out of the caravan window. Little does he know that in my secret fantasy world, the real games begin this Saturday.

I see hot turkish sunshine, azure seas and picture the season ahead as manager of Galatarasay. I dont know too much about them other than what I've read on Wikipedia, but there again I didnt know much about CSKA Moscow or Chile (which I co-managed with Menly if any of you had forgotten) and I did pretty well with those two. So now lies a new challenge ahead – to take this proud turkish club to the top of the Rest of Europe league.

And talking about the league, who am I playing? I've had a quick look on my new fangled Android phone with its ice cream sandwich and A plays A in the EPL. Ok, but there isnt a G. Or does it just go alphabetically down the list, in which case I make it Newcastle. Mmm....China Mag, that would be interesting as I've used his rotation planner as a basis for my defence this time as I did last season.

Another look at my phone shows me the copy of my pc desktop (the reason for buying an Android) and sure enough all my bookmarks are there, but bugger, I forgot to copy over the spreadsheets with all my notes of the season's ones to watch and my summer's work of draft teams. Oh well, I think my team is good enough, at least I do until Friday when I will probably completely overhaul it following the internationals. At least they have free wi-fi at the clubhouse.

“Nan, whats for lunch?” Bump, back to here and now. I sigh and put away the last of the washed breakfast dishes. At least it's not raining at the moment.

So, that's it for now fellow FFSers. I will just leave this final thought for my forthcoming opponents– apparently Galatarasay's home ground is nicknamed “hell” - so I'll be welcoming you all to hell at sometime!

Note to FFS UEFA Council managers: This is the nearest I can get to a Press Conference at the mo 🙂

I have to my dismay read a number of 'DDG nailed on comments' the last few days and would for the benefit of those who (like me) are still tinkering with your goalkeeper options like to say that DDG is catergorically NOT NAILED ON. Why? A young scandinavian gent commonly known in these parts as Lindy, who recently signed a contract extension and WILL play a part in this season. If DDG owners are comfortable with this and happy that their 4.5 (or similar) backup keeper will provide suitable cover then good on ya. To claim that DDG is 'nailed on' however is both misleading and completely not true......rant over

People seem to think that by saying it enough, it'll come true. Everytime Man Utd teamsheet is out, you will check if DDG is on it. i.e. not nailed on. He will be benched when you think you've got 6 points in the bag at home to Reading or the like.

    Hello everybody,

Yes, another RMT but I am actually more concerned about a few aspects of my team as I have been tinkering today quite badly!

    Current team for GW1:

    Federici (De Gea)

    Demel Terry Zabaleta (Cuellar Fonte)

Yaya Toure Pienaar Bale Valencia (Maloney)

    Torres Tevez Pog

It is very generic indeed but I would like to know firstly, is Cuellar nailed on, how likely is Zabaleta to start vs Southampton (and for that matter in general) and is Valencia at all at risk to start this season if he is fit?

    Many thanks

Generic isn't a bad thing, Cuellar is nailed on, yes Zab will start against Southampton and Valencia is the safest United midfield option, only risk with him being if he plays at right back. Team looks pretty good, but I'm not convinced by Pienaar, think Michu will outscore him by some way.

thank you very much for the help mate (and the others for their posts). Good luck in the season ahead. I chose Pienaar as he is decent value for 6.5 and as you may be able to tell with my team, I'm trying to minimise my risk and go for a fairly solid starting team and avoid jumping on band wagons that may well prove to be flops as there is always tons of these band wagons every year. I haven't had the chance to look at this Michu kid, can you tell me much about him or why you think he will outscore other 6.5s?

Once the deadline passes you can make any transfers you like - it won't affect gw1 team. So Torres will still be in your team for GW1 if you take him out on Sunday.

Once the gameweek 1 deadline has passed (11.30am on Saturday) then you can't change your team for gameweek 1. If you chooses Torres then he is there for both his gameweek 1 games.

Any subs you make after the deadline has passed will apply to gameweek 2 (i.e. Chelsea's game against Newcastle).

Away to Stoke is a tough fixture, their defence is pretty solid at home. SUN, sto, liv, SOT, mnc, CHE. 2 good fixtures in the first 6 GW's, and 3 very difficult ones. I'd call that poor. After GW 6 when we know how they will line up, we see who the goal threats are and their fixtures improve then I'll certainly be getting 1 or 2 of them in.

Great, great passer of the ball. Reads the game well too, a bit like Alonso. Good defensively, and takes a great set piece.

Relies on his left foot a little too often though and is very injury prone.

Best position is between DM and CAM as a proper centre mid though is also excellent in the pivot of a 4-2-3-1.
