With two days until the season kick-off, Robin Van Persie’s future appears to have been decided with the announcement that Arsenal have agreed terms with Manchester United.

The official statement arrived this evening from Arsenal and United have also offered confirmation of the move, subject to a medical.

This is obviously momentous news on the eve of the Premier League and Fantasy season. Undoubtedly the biggest move of the summer transfer window so far, the Dutchman’s move to Old Trafford is – from a Fantasy perspective – arguably the most significant transfer since Cristiano Ronaldo left the Old Trafford club for Real Madrid in 2009:

Sir Alex Ferguson’s acquisition of the former Gunners skipper hands United a lethal looking frontline as they look to wrestle the title back from neighbours City. The two top scoring players in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in 2011/12, Van Persie and Rooney – with 269 and 230 points respectively – will surely rack up goals aplenty but, with either of the two more than capable of accruing huge points hauls to the other’s detriment in any given Gameweek, we are left with an unwanted armband dilemma as the Fantasy landscape around us is altered irrevocably.

Quite how Van Persie will fit into the pecking order in terms of set-pieces and spot-kicks is a crucial factor which will be keenly anticipated by Fantasy managers – if Rooney continues as the number one for penalties, the Dutchman’s stock will clearly drop in our estimations, with a tussle for bonus also a significant factor is how we invest in the United frontline. The Fantasy popularity of new boy Shinji Kagawa perhaps now looks a little less appealing until a clearer picture of the situation at Old Trafford, in terms of tactics and the likelihood of rotation, is established.

Over at the Emirates, Van Persie’s departure is surely set to boost the long-term appeal of new signings Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud. The Gunners’ French-based scout Gilles Grimandi admitted only last month that Giroud was signed from Montpellier in anticipation of Van Persie leaving – a central role looks likely for the Frenchman, then, but with Wenger conceding his summer signings will be eased into action in the season ahead, their initial impact is perhaps questionable. Despite this, it seems Podolski, at least, is set to start against Sunderland on Saturday as the Gunners gear up for action without their former skipper.

Fellow new-boy Santi Cazorla, though, now looks the most likely Gunner to benefit in terms of set-pieces; potentially, he should be handed corners and free-kicks, while the issue of spot-kicks looks up for grabs – Podolski scored from the spot on Sunday, though it’s worth noting that Mikel Arteta didn’t feature in the 4-0 win over Cologne.

We’ll have more on the full impact of the Van Persie move and its knock-on effects for both sides in a more substantial Moving Target later.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Just wondering, what are the chances Arsenal will get off to a horrible start? Last year they lost Fabregas and did terrible, now they have lost RVP. Hmm

Weren't they injury ridden in the back too though? When Vermaelen came back, they picked up a bunch of cleans...I have him in my team right now. I just have a good feeling about him.

It's hard to tell because both Podolski and Giroud are both new to the league and will have to adapt the the PL. If Song goes to Barca then that's another big loss.. until Jack Wilshere returns from injury at least and his return date seems to keep getting pushed back. IMO, it will be another slow start until the new strikers start to settle into the team

Okay China Mag let's do a Newcastle rundown! Having read your action-packed article I see we're still trying to nail down how Newcastle will line up this year. Which of course is very intriguing to me as I see plenty of FPL potential.

This is my understanding of what you did last year.

Initially you played a standard 4-4-2. Tiote and Cabaye were CMs with Tiote generally deeper. Gutierrez on left (seemed pretty defensive though) and a mixture of more attack-minded players on the right including Obertan and Raylor, eventually leading to Barfa. Ba and a support striker such as Best or Ameobi up front.

Once Barfa established himself and Cisse arrived you played 4-3-3. Ba left forward, Cisse center forward and Barfa right forward. Cabaye the most advanced midfielder of the three with Tiote and Gutierrez more defensive.

    How's that?

So as for this season we have the problem that Pardew has mentioned he intends to play Ba as center forward "90% of the time". The burning question is how it is possible for Cisse to play alongside him if Cisse can only play as a center forward. It seems unlikely for example that Pardew would play a 4-3-3 swapping Cisse and Ba, so Ba played in the centre. Is it marginally more likely that they revert to 4-4-2 with Ba deeper striker and Cisse furthest forward? We all remember that Ba actually got his goals from playing deeper...

        REPOST

I’ve been rethinking how we will line up this season. The formation I posted with my analysis

        http://uefacouncil.wordpress.c.....china-mag/

came from the quote from pardew saying that Ba would play 90% of games through the middle. I took that to mean we would play two up front. But what if he means that 90% of the games that Ba plays will be up front? He could be planning on playing just one of the dembas (one in the league, the other in the cups). The other would be on the bench to either come on and replace the OTHER, or to switch it up and go two up. We would also definitely play two up front for certain games.

If this is the case, then it majorly dents the potential of both demba’s, but (and this is the key), it allows Marveaux to make the left sided position his own. If we do play 4-3-3 (which is the best formation for the players we have), I would prefer to play Marveaux on the left. He then becomes the biggest must have in the game at 4.5m!! It also increases Cabeye’s stock as he would be playing ACM.

I would be interested to hear peoples thoughts on this.

If my above thinking is correct, the first choice 11 would be

          ———–Krul———
          ?–Collo–Saylor–Santon
          ——-Anita–Tiote———
          ———-Cabeye——–
          Barfa–Ba/Cisse—Marveaux

Hopefully ? will be a new right back (though debuchy got injured last night). If not, Simpson would be ok

Ah I read that but was trying to digest it. So you reckon he means that WHEN Ba plays, he'll be center forward, but Newcastle's center forward won't always be Ba 😉 Quite possible given the fixture congestion coming up, though few of us want it to happen of course.

I get what you mean with Marveaux now. So if that happened, he could become left forward. There would still be a defensive left midfielder such as Gutierrez covering behind him to maintain team balance.

I really don't know. All I'm saying is that COULD be what he is saying. It makes more sense with the personnel that we have for us to play 4-3-3.

See my suggested formation above. No room for Jonas. But i'm sure he will get plenty of game time. Especially as he can cover several positions

And yes, worst case scenario if the rumours are true and Song actually leaves, Diaby should step right in the replace him.

There's always the possibility we go 4-4-2 with two strikers up top, Walcott RW and Gervinho/Ox LW, Cazorla and Arteta in the middle. But doesn't really affect any massive FPL players that badly, unlike United 😉

VDV over Siggie for sure. AVB said he will be a key figure in the upcoming campaign. Makes sense otherwise he could have been sold. I expect Siggy to play in the Modric role at least for the short term till a replacement is found and becomes match fit.

So how will the Arsenal front 6 for Gw1 look like?

    Arteta - Song
    Cazorla
    Walcott/Gervinho - Giroud - Podolski

    This even remotely correct?

Currently have Bale Mata and Dyer +0.5
Thinking about VdV, Cazorla, Pienaar, Siggy etc.

    de gea / begovic

    fabio / cuellar / hangeland / A. cole / zabeleta

    bale / mata / noble / dyer / n'zogbia

    torres / tevez / graham

    2 mil in the bank

pretty balanced I think though I am struggling to stick with my mid price mid selections. How do ppl feel about wigan's gomez, taarabt, etc. and other mid price midfielders?

I dunno. Walcott will score more goals I think and will play more advanced. On reflection I think I might wait until fixtures improve - sto, liv, mcy, CHE in the first 6 weeks is tough.

    GW1

    Schwarzer (Cerny)
Demel - Gorkss - Lescott (Tierney, Clyne)
McAnuff - Lampard - Mata - Bale (Britton)
    Tevez - Aguero - Torres

    GW2 WILDCARD

    De Gea (Cerny)
Lescott - Clyne - Tierney (Demel, Gorkss)
Yaya - Noble - Bale - Kagawa (Britton)
    Tevez - RVP - Torres

Then Torres to Cisse/Spurs striker for GW3 and back to Torres for GW4.

    Is this crazy?

Judging by the number of pages on this article, I am guessing that there would have been a chaos around here when the news were out. I just saw the news and honestly I am shocked. So what are people doing about the Torres > Rooney move? Leaving 3mil in a bank or avoiding them altogether?

avoid for now. leaving 3m in the bank is too much anyway.

Yeah Baines is very tempting. But avoiding them means we have no United attacking coverage? I had Kagawa but he is now too risky and Valencia may play RB that's why I don't want him. I think I'll leave the Rooney cash and do the Rooney transfer as he is unlikely to be rotated. If RVP becomes essential later I'll get him by downgrading somewhere else.

          i will get valencia.
even at RB, which I think he won't be playing at, he will still send in quality crosses all the time and RVP/ROon will connect those crosses. still the best united coverage IMO

Have ditched my original plan of Kun Tevez Torres + 2 > Roonpig. Probably will downgrade Torres to Bent, Podolski etc in GW2 and upgrade one of the midfielder for a hit 🙂
