Alan Pardew is sweating over the fitness of Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa ahead of Tottenham’s visit to the Sports Direct Arena on Saturday evening. Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign wide man Oussama Assaidi from SC Heerenveen, Norwich snap up former City left-back Javier Garrido on loan, while Swansea sign Kyle Bartley from Arsenal…

Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa both remain “still doubtful” for Newcastle’s home clash with Spurs on Saturday evening, according to Alan Pardew. The French duo have barely featured in pre-season due to their Euro 2012 commitments and, while Ben Arfa’s omission is likely to hand Sylvain Marveaux a starting role on the right flank, the possible absence of Cabaye could be offset by the news that the Magpies have signed Vurnon Anita from Ajax on a five-year deal. The 23-year old can also play in defence but Pardew admitted yesterday that he anticipates his new signing to mainly feature in midfield in the season ahead. The Newcastle boss also revealed Papiss Cisse has recovered from a recent hamstring problem and will be available for selection against Andre Villas-Boas’ side – Pardew failed to mention Demba Ba, who has been nursing a shin problem, though it’s worth remembering the Senegalese striker slumped in form this time last year after fasting during Ramadan.

Liverpool have agreed terms with SC Heerenveen for the transfer of winger Oussama Assaidi. The deal is subject to a medical but, upon completion, is likely to raise concerns over the club’s bid to sign Clint Dempsey from Fulham. The Reds have been linked with the US international all season but with Assaidi’s preferred position as an inverted winger on the left, it may well be that Brendan Rodgers has given up on the chase to snap up Dempsey, bearing in mind that Luis Suarez is likely to be fielded on the flanks in Rodgers’ preferred 4-3-3 formation. The transfer also raises question marks over the game time of Stewart Downing – the former Villa man has been stationed on the right in recent matches and, at 6.5 in FPL, had looked an intriguing prospect, but he could well be restricted to a sub role is Assaidi completes his move.

Norwich yesterday completed the signing of Javier Garrido from Lazio on a season-long loan. The former Man City left-back’s return to the Premier League immediately raises major question marks over the game time of Marc Tierney for the season ahead as Chris Hughton continues to bolster his backline. Having shipped 66 goals and returned three clean sheets under Paul Lambert in 2011/12, the Canaries defence was given a wide berth by Fantasy managers but pre-season results have been encouraging, with four clean sheets in the last six friendlies and Tierney – priced at 4.0 in FPL – looked an intriguing option. Dependant on Garrido’s price, it could well that one of Ryan Bennett or Leon Barnett may afford us a cut-price route into Hughton’s backline for the season ahead.

Swansea have signed Kyle Bartley from Arsenal on a three-year deal. The deal is something of a surprise from a Fantasy perspective – with Chico already arriving from Genoa, we’d anticipated the Spaniard forging a partnership with Ashley Williams at the heart of the Welsh club’s defence but Michael Laudrup looks to have other ideas up his sleeve. With a strong starting schedule, the Swans backline seem primed for investment but with doubts surrounding the central areas, Angel Rangel and Neil Taylor could well be a safer bet until we discover the new manager’s intentions. Bartley has yet to be added to the Fantasy games and, while all their main defenders are priced at 5.0 in FPL, Rangel, at 5.7 in the Sky Sports game, looks like the most secure route into Laudrup’s backline right now. Reports have also suggested the Dane is ready to bring Pablo Hernandez to the club, raising question marks over Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer with just one day before tomorrow’s big kick-off – hardly ideal as we look to whittle our squads into shape.

    Was scrabbling around last night and found a good potential GK rotation

    Jaask/Mignolet

    Just digging, and for the first 10 you get

    AVL, RDG, FUL, nor, SUN, WIG, ARS, SOT, wig, AVL

    If I was at all confident of West Ham’s clean sheet potential, this would be a winner for me (the obvious flaw being the Arsenal fixture). Anyone found better?

      I like Federici + Friedel (10m) or Krul + Migs (10.5m)

      Former for great rotation (albeit riskier and leakier)
      Latter for stability - Can see Newcastle and Sunderland doing well defensivly.

    This is my starting team for the big day tomorrow;

    DDG

    Zabaleta Hangeland Cole

    Santi Ramires VDV Pienaar

    Torres Petric Tevez

    2.5m left over

    My questions are as follows;

    1) Is Zabaleta nailed on for the next few GWs at least?
    2) Should I risk spending the 2.5m on upgrading Pienaar to a United mid with the lack of clarity over the line-up
    3) Should use the 2.5m to upgrade petric to one of; Podolski, Jelavic, Bent or Defoe and if so who?
    4) Any other suggestions?

      1. yes
      2. I'd wait until GW2 or possibly 3
      3. Thinking about this myself, but I really want to keep Petric. I've opted for taking out Torres instead -> Podolski, and putting Mata in midfield
      4. I'd go Hangeland-> Fabio, VDV-> Bale

        What's The thinking behind both of your options in 4? QPR are still gonna be shaky in defence I reckon and VDV has had a higher points average per game than Bale for the last 2 seasons/

          QPR have been great in pre-season, Fabio has been playing a lot and is attacking, and he is cheaper in a defence with two heavy hitters.

          Bale is completely nailed on and doesn't get injured all the time. VDV is just so hot and cold, and challenged even further by Siggy. Is he even gonna play?

            I don't see why he wouldn't, Siggy is coming from a team where he was the main man by a mile last season and not sure it will work out for him as well this season. Still not sure on Fabio, looking at all of QPRs defenders there's not one of them I like, just can't see them keeping clean sheets.

        Ireland is a strange character. What he needs is a manager who has faith in him and he has that now. He should show some of the potential he displayed at Man City. Time to repay the faith and patience Villa have had in him.

    A chocolate bar of your choice for informed answers to these questions:

    1) Are we expecting Nolan to start for West Ham? He's not in the predicted lineup on the team news page, which is puzzling.

    2) Is it Barnett or R.Bennett who is the sole remaining 4.0 nailed on defender for Norwich?

        Very unusual for the team news on this site to be out of kilter with expectations. Would Mark etc really accidentally omit the West Ham captain from the predicted line-up? Anyone else able to put my mind at rest here?

      Kevin Nolan has a foot injury. Something to do with his big toe I believe. He got hurt against Colchester around a month ago. I don't he has played a minute since? He wouldn't be match fit so I wouldn't expect him to start tomorrow. He might be out for a while.

    Looks like Koscielny & Sagna are both injured

    Sorry if mentioned but sources say Southampton FC have signed Watson Ramirez from Bologna .

    If so then this is a real coup, Liverpool,Tottenham And A.C. Milan were all after him. Costs 12-14 million.

    Show of intent 🙂

    A or B...

    I think B is much more solid but really want to squeeze Bale in (Telegraph game in which he's very expensive)

    A: Kolarov,Cazorla,Bale
    B: Agger,Sigg,Van d Vart

    Thanks!

    Pienaar Kagawa Yaya Toure Mata

    Pogrebnyak Tevez Torres

    Subs: Noble, Williams Barnett

    Any chances? I'm undecided on Kagawa don't think he will be nailed down in united team prob rotated!

    Really wanted an Arsenal player as I think they might thump Sunderland, but finding it difficult to be honest with all the injuries and doubts.

      Prefer Gibbs. But with Kos out they may use Djourou or Mertesacker and would not go near one of their defenders with either of them in it.
