A change in formation during the latter part of Wigan’s 2011-12 season transformed the fortunes of right-back and occasional centre-half Emmerson Boyce. Shifted out of defence and handed a role on the right of the Latics’ midfield, Boyce and fellow wide man Jean Beausejour patrolled the flanks magnificently to help secure Wigan’s Premier League safety over the final few months of the previous campaign.

Bearing in mind his side registered seven wins in their final nine matches last time round, it’s no surprise to see Roberto Martinez stick with this ploy. Having recovered from their opening day defeat to Chelsea, the Latics bounced back with a win and clean sheet at St Mary’s last weekend and, with a strong run of fixtures on the horizon, Boyce has climbed his way up our Watchlist rankings.

Priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game, the Latics man – who is classified as a defender in both games – offers us an intriguing mid-price alternative over the next few Gameweeks and, as Martinez’s men square up to a kind run of opponents (STO, mun, FUL, sun, EVE, swa), Boyce has the potential for points at both ends of the pitch. Granted, the Gameweek 4 clash with United stands out in this short term fixture list but, as Wigan’s 1-0 home win over the Red Devils last season showed, it will not be an encounter that is likely to intimidate Martinez.

In his six years at the club, Boyce has only scored seven goals for Wigan but, with three of those goals arriving during last season’s formation shift, savvy managers will have spotted his strong potential for points over the coming campaign. The last fixture of 2011/12 saw him bag a brace against Wolves, including a spectacular volley, highlighting the attacking capabilities of the former Barbados international.

Already this season we have seen how integral Boyce’s delivery from the flank is to Wigan’s game plan. His well worked cross, that ultimately Manuel Figueroa failed to convert, proved to be the Latics’ best attempt on goal during the first half of their 2-0 victory over Southampton. While he’s yet to pick up an assist, Boyce has done enough to suggest he could well be on the cusp of attacking returns as Martinez looks to build on their Gameweek 2 triumph and avoid the customary battle to beat the drop.

It's a hell of an album, I could and have listened to it on repeat all day! Good job promoting it, it's worth getting people to listen. Great album cover too.

I was in a record shop with my cousin once and I asked him to pick one album he thought I absolutely had to have and he picked this, so the rest is history.

My team is terrible and I've had an atrocious start. Probably should have WCed last Saturday but didn't. Probably should WC this Saturday but won't.

VDV, Defoe, Ireland and Green all need to go for obvious reasons. I'm thinking VDV to Hazard and Defoe to Graham in GW4 (for my third 4 point hit in as many weeks).
If Hazard stays at 9.9 I will just do the first one for free.
Ireland and Green can come out in that order, later on.

    Sound like a plan?

My current WC squad leaves me short by 0.2m. Think it's possible to WC next week and use the international break to make 0.2 in the transfer market to get this team:

    Foster Begovic

    Williams Staylor Boyce Cuellar Vertonghen

    Hazard Guthrie Pienaar Bale Michu

    RVP Tevez Graham

Really like the look of it. What you think?

yes, cut a long story short, I've tried all sorts of combos. However, what I like about Hangeland/Hughes and Cuellar is that you can rotate them with one another or:

          Staylor and Cuellar + Hangeland + Boyce/Williams

With Dembele gone, you may do well to avoid the Fulham defence, though.

Vert looks a great prospect, but he costs a lot.

Only a suggestion, but I like what you've suggested and then play Williams/Rangel every week till GW9. Keep Pienaar and then keep flexible with a kitty for later upgrades. This is why I'm avoiding Baines; allows for greater transfer flexibility.

Yeah, actually I agree. Baines is a luxury that Pienaar should fill. Think I'll stick with my original WC above for now. See how GW3 pans out.

              Muchos Gracias my friend!

Yeah, Fulham do worry me now Murphy/Dembele/Dempsey are missing. Think I may stay clear for now.

Maybe swap Vert with Baines, Pienaar with McClean (for SUN cover) and see how that looks. Cheers again Corri. Always educational.

to be honest, i think clyne or demel would only start for me a handful of times, any thought on the keepers, would love vorm but can only get him in alongside a 4.0m non playing keeper, which i'm not keen on

I wasn't convinced by Magia and I think Nolan just had a quiet night. Who was your right back? He was awful. Henderson looked sharp and I wonder if he will push Jussi for starts.

              True.
What I meant to say was, a differential is kind of a punt, one that some people aren't willing to risk. Or more likely, are unaware of.
              Adebayor doesn't fit that bill.
By his ownership % yes he's a differential. But not in the other ways.
Once he starts scoring, his ownership will rise by 10-15% at least.

Please help I have a dilemma here...
Want to get Hazard in and get rid of Mata but will have to do it tonight to do so because of price rises. This would result in a -4 point hit, which I would usually be okay with but I've already taken a hit this week.
    Therefore should I :
    (A) Take another hit and do Mata ➡ Hazard tonight
    (B) Wait until next week and do Bale ➡ Hazard and keep Mata

No hit. Choose whatever you want, just don't take a hit on a player that isn't going to play, and probably rise by a maximum of 0.1 over the next 8-10 days.

I haven't, he's still a fantastic shot-stopper and one United's defense is sealed he'll come good. That and i have more pressing transfers out.

He might need a bit of time to get on the same wavelength as Vidic, they've barely played together, and GK/senoir CB is an important partnership, but I'm not wasting a transfer on my keeper at this stage.

Depends what i would spend the extra on if i downgraded. I don't really rate many of the rotations, though, wanted a fire and forget keeper.

Tell you wot... Ades ownership is so low, i can see a .3 rise during the international break if he scores a goal v norwich at the weekend.

    ANyone tempted?

Alread own him. Tevez, Torres, Adebayor seems to be the best strike force (value for money) out there and all sub 10m. Options such as Ba, Lambert, Podolski, Suarez, Torres etc for any who under perform. I don't see the need for RVP.

I will probably bring another midfielder in. Cazola or Kagawa are options.

Also thinking Tevez, Torres, Adebayor, just waiting for Ade to show some form and waiting to see if Torres is "back"

RMC Radio, who are pretty good for news on teams in the south of France, are reporting that:

    * Joey Barton's move to Marseille is a done deal. The QPR midfielder will join on a one-year loan and will be presented to the media tomorrow. OM will pay only 50% of Barton's salary, with QPR continuing to pay the other half.

    * In return, Stephane Mbia is set to join QPR on Thursday from Marseille.

Not sure what you mean. Debuchy's injured, so won't play for Lille tonight (Béria steps in). Newcastle broke off interest in him a while ago, but Real Madrid might want to sign him.

Newcastle are still interested in Douglas though, but they have competition from Schalke 04.

M'Bia and Diakite shielding the back 4 plus Julio Cesar in goal

Their defense should definitely pick up.

Agreed - if Hughes can stop meddling with the team long enough, that's a strong defence.
