Tony Pulis added to Stoke’s midfield options last week with the deadline day signing of Charlie Adam from Liverpool on a four-year deal. The 26-year-old moves to the Britannia for an undisclosed fee just one season after joining the Merseysiders and was handed his debut at Wigan the following day, climbing off the subs bench for the injured Andy Wilkinson:

Adam became The Potters’ fifth acquisition of the summer, following the likes of Maurice Edu, Jamie Ness, Michael Kightly and Geoff Cameron to the club and his new manager revealed he has high expectations for the playmaker:

It’s no secret that we’ve been looking to bring more goals to the squad and Charlie is a fantastic signing in that respect. Not only will his creativity and his eye for delivering a pass be a great asset to us, he scored twelve goals for Blackpool in the Premier League two seasons ago. In fact, he scored 28 League goals for Blackpool over two seasons which is a fantastic return for a midfield player. We are looking for more goals from all areas of the team and his arrival gives us more competition for places in that department.

The Statistics

Adam’s career began in the youth ranks at Dundee before joining Glasgow Rangers on his fifteenth birthday. His time at the Ibrox club proved frustrating, though; the midfielder was unable to break into the first-team and made just four league appearances in his first three seasons, with loan spells at Ross County and St Mirren providing him with game time instead.

The 2006-07 season was Adam’s only campaign as a regular for Rangers – a total of 11 goals from 32 appearances highlighted his capabilities but midway through the following term he was packed off to Blackpool on loan. Having scored twice in 13 games for the Seasiders, Adam was snapped up on a two-year deal by Ian Holloway in August 2009 and, with spot-kicks and set-piece duties under his belt, helped lead the club from the Championship to the Premier League with 16 goals and nine assists in 43 matches.

Adam continued to prosper in the top-flight – his cut-price appeal across the Fantasy games earned significant investment, with 35 appearances harvesting 12 goals and eight assists in spite of his club’s subsequent relegation. A move to Liverpool last term saw his Fantasy price rise substantially and, with no penalty duties to fall back on, he scored just twice in 28 matches, with 11 FPL assists also accrued. Adam has also featured 12 times for his national side, scoring on one occasion.

The Prospects

The move certainly looks to hand Adam the opportunity of a regular role under Pulis. The installation of Brendan Rodgers to the Anfield hot seat was always likely to see him edged towards the exit door – Adam’s sometimes wayward distribution was completely at odds with the Irishman’s style of play and, with Joe Allen, Lucas and Nuri Sahin all ahead of him in the pecking order, it’s little surprise he has moved on.

While Stoke’s rigid 4-4-2 formation won’t afford him the same sort of leeway as the 4-3-3 at Blackpool, Adam’s style looks the perfect fit for Pulis’ side. With Peter Crouch to aim for up front, the midfielder’s distribution from deep could be a key weapon for the Potters this term, as Pulis looks to address a record that saw his side score a mere 36 goals last season – the lowest of any side in the Premier League.

Ideally, Pulis will partner Adam with an industrious ball-winner such as Glenn Whelan or Geoff Cameron in the centre of the park, allowing him a little more freedom to push on and spark his side’s attacks. He’s likely to be handed the majority set-pieces and corners and, with Crouch, Robert Huth and Ryan Shawcross all supplying a significant aerial threat, Adam could easily rack up a decent number of assists over the season. It’s worth noting, however, than Jon Walters maintained penalty duties when the new boy was on the pitch at Wigan last weekend, a factor that will surely diminish his overall potential.

Coming in at 6.8 in FPL, his initial classification as a Liverpool player means Adam is costlier than any Potters player, while the Sky Sports game have handed him a 5.8 price tag – 1.0 less than Matt Etherington in Pulis’ midfield. Looking at the short-term fixtures, though, it’s unlikely many Stoke players will be primed for investment. Pulis’ side square up to City, Chelsea, Swansea, Liverpool and United in the next five – such a schedule will surely see us look elsewhere, keeping an eye on Adam’s progress at the Potters until the fixture list smiles a little kinder.

Jenkinson could be out when Sagna returns. Could consider Yayas purple patch a gone and go for a Ben Arfa for example.

Hughes, HBA, Graham/Lambert works. So does Davies, Piennar, Berba/Fletcher.

Hughes, HBA, Berba/Fletcher doesn't as I want Arsenal defender for sure later.

How about getting Hughes, Pienaar, Lambert or get HBA instead of Peanuts?

I dislike Davies as Swansea will start to leak goals imo, at least until Chico is back.

Hughes, HBA, 6M FWD was my gut reaction before. My guts says HBA even though his fixtures are similar to Pienaar's.

Hughes or Davies, either will make way for Arsenal defender later. I just fancied Swansea's next 3 over Fulham. Even if Swansea sign a new LB he may not be match fit so Davies can do job until I get Arsenal defender.

Isn't it strange so many people wildcarding?

Well, what I am trying to say is . . . Everyone spends months tossing and turning over their squads, asking numerous advice (RMT) then only to want to start AGAIN 3 weeks later.

    Bizarre.

Was everyones thinking that far off the mark, or deluded as at gw1?

Your team is what it is because of one poor knee jerk decision which in its entirety is not poor. Ba had three chances to score. Also, your situation was not as bad as the rest. I would have saved my WC if i was in your place too mate 🙂

Transfer window has changed a lot of clubs nailed-ons. Some price rises , Hazard, Van Persie, Tevez etc are more than expected and prob out of reach in a few weeks. I was gonna ship 8 pts for Van Persie, Hazard and Coloccini. Then realised Green is a goner, Rafael not so nailed on. Better than dropping buckets of points but the proof of the pudding will be the end of GW 38.

    Good evening peeps.

I've got an awkward problem with my browser at the moment (Chrome). I'm experiencing viewing problems with all my regular FF-related webpages (this one, the official FPL-page, the UCL-fantasy web-page and the wordpress-sites (the council-site and Doosras page)).

Only problem with the Scout site is that none of the avatars are showing (only the broken-image-link-symbol), while the FPL-page and the wordpress-sites all look something like this: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/67772320/council.png

Any ideas to what might be the reason for this? Strange thing is that all other pages are completely fine! Is it the effect of a curse trying to ruin my FPL-enjoyment?

I use Chrome myself on my win7 pc and it's fine with adblock.

If you don't find a solution I'd do a fresh install (not too much hassle) and check each and every stage to see what may be causing the problem. Obvious but sound advice, imho.

You didn't have this problem before, right?

Usually a page loads up like this when your net is extremely slow. Since it's unable to render it, it leaves most of the graphics out, hence you get a page like that. But I doubt your net is slow, so must ask you did you install any add-ons recently - Firebug, Tilt etc?

Cuellar- a 4.5 defender under MON, one of the best defensive sides in the PL last season.. no brainer!

Baines- expensive but OOP taking pens and set pieces with Everton's run of fixtures.

Seem like solid picks to me mate

I don't think NEW or swa are easy fixtures at all. Everton might win, but that doesn't mean they'll keep a clean sheet.
If you downgrade him you could upgrade Berbatov to someone expensive. Or upgrade Sterling / Morrison.

            But he isn't a midfielder.
Doesn't everyone always say form over fixtures?
            Cheaper but not by much.
            Better? In what sense?

Not that I have Cazorla, but so far your arguments are invalid.

Form was in reply to the fixtures bit.
The main thing is there are just 3 striker roles, but 5 midfielder roles.
Tevez / RVP are pretty much a given in most teams, including the person above's team, so he's left with just one free place. After Dempsey there aren't too many Fulham midfielders you can choose from, so Berbatov is his only pick (although, I'm not convinced by Berbatov yet)

It's hard to tell so far. To be fair they've both been involved in all (2) goals that Arsenal have scored. It's like comparing Michu and Dyer. CAM vs winger, and we know how Michu is doing. Also Cazorla should be on more set pieces than Podolski, only I'm not sure about penalties.

i dont like berbetov, for 0.1m you could get fletcher in. he had a great season last year for wolvs. also look at jenkinson, i had him from gameweek 1 i got him for 4.5m he was a bargin evan now for 4.8 he is definately worth it.

Berbatov joint Golden Boot 2010/2011.. not the same quality players supplying him but worth a shout at 6.9 imo. Jenkinson is a short term solution.. Sagna will probably be back for GW5

Ok guys here some insights to UCL. have been playing Barclays & UCL for a while but never really spoken, so might find this coming out of the blue.

I see people taking Malaga & Valencia defense. Stupid. Might as well take defense from porto, cluj, zagreb, celtik, zenit.

Forward: Nothing better than Messi RVP Ronaldo. Infact i would say this is it. the only reason one wouldnt want it is to increase some midfield power, but from my experience, just like Liga, UCL mids dont give u much. I mean some do, but u never know who really will. one should blindly take a messi (who would score max) couples with either ronaldo or RVP and for the 3rd go with ibra, mandzukic (gomez injured), hulk, muller (with gomez out he benefits the most).

dont forget guys like cardoza, luiz adriano, lewandowski, hunteleer, kerzakhov, Umut, tevez, michel, cause liek it or not they will score.

Mid: everyone will do a typical Hazard, cazorla, swine, shirokov & cheapo. unfortunately its not gonna work. simply cause UCL is about great forwards and great defense. i remember when i took Frei last season for 4.5 and he was my best buy over any god damn expensive mid. people to look out for are giggs, sammir, KPB, Krros, yaya, moutinho, lampard, Srna, Montolivo, fegouli.... these are the guys who will rack some points.

Defense: Ivanovic, Evra, Gibbs the most polular combo, and rightly so. u get decent chances of cleanies, and some assist / goal chances. other 2 just invest is the 4 mils. enough options there.

Keepers: this is going to be tricky. again people are more concerned about prices than game days. one got to choose 2 keepers who play on different days. in cheapos, best combo is pyatov and malafeev. another good way of getting into AC milan defense, which in my opinion is going to get more cleanies than ManU is abbiati. do not go for Valdes, im a barca fan and there is no way they will get the best cleanies.

dont know if this help anyone, but nevertheless... all the best!!

    (I Hate international breaks!)

Agree with most of this except defence
Evra has been a weak link so far and needs rest
Going stronger on Defence during group stage is a good bet
Also group strength is very important
