Thomas Vermaelen concedes his form has let him down in recent matches. Sergio Aguero is on his way back to Manchester to step up his recovery from a knee injury, Eden Hazard reveals his confidence is on the up, Daniel Agger praises Liverpool’s fitness regime under Brendan Rodgers, Newcastle receive good news on Massadio Haidara’s injury, while George McCartney is targetting a first-team return for West Ham’s upcoming home clash with West Brom:

Thomas Vermaelen has admitted he has deserved to be dropped by Arsene Wenger after a series of disappointing displays this season. While Wojciech Szczesny’s father has publicly criticised the Gunners boss for omitting the keeper from the last couple of games, the Belgian seems a lot more pragmatic over the situation:

“I have made mistakes…If I played flawlessly in all the matches I would be Lionel Messi. As a footballer you know you what may happen when you play badly. I’m not worried though – it’s only the last games, I have played about 35 times this season. This is Arsenal, they are not a bad team and there is a lot of competition.”

The duo’s absence from the first-team has coincided with an upturn in defensive solidity for the north London outfit. With Laurent Koscielny installed alongside Per Mertesacker at the heart of the back-four and Lukas Fabianksi taking his place between the sticks, the Gunners have registered back-to-back clean sheets against Bayern and Swansea and are now just four points behind Spurs with a game in hand in the race for a fourth place finish. With a home game against Reading up next and a double Gameweek 33 edging ever closer, though, Mertesacker is perhaps still the only nailed-on option, with competition in the full-back areas also adding to the mix as Fantasy managers look to take advantage of Arsenal’s kind run of fixtures.

Eden Hazard has spoken of his growing self-belief under Rafa Benitez as Chelsea, hinting that a consistency of game time has been key to his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge:

“My confidence is really up at the moment and I feel good in myself. It’s quite weird because, historically, March always seems to be the best time of the year for me. Last year I got player of the month in Ligue 1, and a couple of years ago I won the same award… Being honest, I didn’t expect to be playing in every game, but aside from the three I missed through suspension, I have.”

As demonstrated by his goal and assist contribution in Sunday’s win over West Ham, Hazard seems to be replicating his early-season form after a somewhat hit and miss autumn period. Double figure returns in four of his last six starts in front of his own fans have helped the Belgian rack up the points at a time where Juan Mata seems to serve up his best Fantasy performances for the Blues road trips. Now just 11 points behind his team mate, Hazard’s form goes from strength to strength and with a double Gameweek also still to be schedule for Benitez’s men, he looks set to have a significant say in the remaining few matches of the campaign, as Benitez juggles his options to cope with FA Cup and Europa League demands.

Sergio Aguero is heading back to Manchester to continue his knee injury recovery after being ruled out of Argentina’s World Cup qualifiers with Venezuela and Bolivia. The forward took to twitter to reveal:

“My knee is better but the squad’s physicians would rather have me be safe and stick with the treatments until it’s completely healed. It’s a pity to miss out on the national squad matches but I’ll be cheering for Argentina from Manchester, while I finish the recovery. “

While his absence is unfortunate for his national side, Aguero’s update certainly hasn’t ruled out a return to action in time for City’s home clash with Newcastle in week on Saturday. Roberto Mancini had hinted last week he was anticipating his main forward to be in the mix for the Magpies game and with a trip to United to follow – in addition to an FA Cup Semi-Final against their neighbours or Chelsea the following weekend – Mancini is desperate to ensure Aguero is fit and available as he looks to end the season with at least one lot of silverware.

Liverpool were given some positive injury news yesterday after Pepe Reina recovered from a calf problem that has kept him out of the last couple of matches. The keeper is expected to start for Spain against Finland tomorrow and while Brendan Rodgers will welcome him back for the following weekend’s trip to Villa, the Reds will be without the services of Joe Allen for the rest of the season with the midfielder set to undergo a shoulder operation.

Staying with the Reds, Daniel Agger has taken time to praise Rodgers’ fitness regime. Speaking to a website in his native Denmark ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, the centre-half revealed:

“For me it’s about being fit and I’ve been the fittest in years. I have not missed a game because of an injury and I think that is the first time in my career. Brendan Rodgers is undoubtedly the reason I have played all the matches without injuries this year and I cannot be anything but pleased. It is not I who can take these decisions, it is he who has decided to adjust my training specifically for me. The new coaching team have come up with a form of exercise taking into account the individual, and it is something I have needed. My training volume is scaled down and then I have an increased recovery period.”

Agger has missed a single league match all season, back in Gameweek 2 against City as a result of a one-match suspension and has already played more minutes this term than in any other since arriving on Merseyside back in 2006. While many managers have applied rest and rotation throughout their squads, Rodgers’ approach has clearly been beneficial to Fantasy managers. Granted, Agger’s two goals haven’t quite caught the eye but Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez have offered us a consistency of game time which seems to be something of a rarity these days. The Liverpool skipper is currently on course to play every minute of the season and is set for his most impressive Fantasy campaign since 2008/09, while Suarez’s single-game absence has been as a result of suspension and have helped him close the gap on Robin Van Persie to just three points at the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings.

Newcastle have received a positive prognosis on the injury sustained by Massadio Haidara in Sunday’s defeat at Wigan. The full-back has also undergone scans which suggest he could be back before the end of the season, dispelling fears of a possible career-ending injury. Haidara’s potential return could be crucial for the Magpies, given their current issues at full-back – Mathieu Debuchy limped out of the Latics defeat with a hamstring issue, while Davide Santon is reported to have picked up a thigh injury during training for the Italy Under 21s.

George McCartney is targetting a return to action for West Ham’s Gameweek 31 clash with West Brom. The full-back has failed to feature since Gameweek 16 but speaking to the club’s official website, has revealed:

“The knee’s feeling good, I think I probably need a bit more fitness and a bit more sharpness but that will come with the next few days’ training and hopefully some more game time. I’ve only been back training for about ten days to two weeks. The next game’s not until the end of March so that gives me a bit of time to do some more training, more fitness work and I’ll be raring to go come the West Brom game. “

A return for McCartney is something of a worry for owners of Guy Demel and Joey O’Brien, with the former, in particular, looks susceptible to rotation. With a double Gameweek 33 also on the cards in addition to a home clash with Wigan the following week, the Hammers’ short-term fixtures are looking decent and with injuries to many of their midfielders, Fantasy managers may fancy a punt in defence in light of that schedule. Down to 3.8 in FPL, McCartney looks an enticing proposition but remains a little risky, with Jussi Jaaskelainen and Winston Reid the safest options at the back for those eyeing up a route into Sam Allardyce’s defence.

I can't see any argument against Michu > Cazorla then Cazorla > Hazard after the double.

Think I'm going lampard and hazard for the run in. May even treble up with Mata when they have their double.

Cazorla is a good possibility to draw blanks many weeks? Cazorla's effectiveness varies depending upon the position he plays and whether Wilshere is available?

I've done Michu > Cazorla myself but there are certainly arguments against it.

So, could need some expertise on this:

    My team:

    Bunn/Scz
    Dawson, Wilson, Zab (Davies, Clyne)
    Michu, Mata, Walcott, Sissoko (Snodgrass)
    Suarez, Kone, Cisse
    Bank: 3

Thinking of doing this transfers for -8 hit (Need to catch up on rival)

    Scz -> Jaaska
    Michu (Or Snodgrass?) -> Cazorla
    Cisse -> Giroud

    What do you think lads?

Personally I'd only do the keeper one and that's if you don't have any back up. Maybe Fabianski if you fancy a punt and saving some dosh.

Cazorla can wait as michu/snodgrass could easily score this GW so not worth a hit and Cisse has two good fixtures after Man City.

I know the scouse accent can be difficult, but asking for an interpretor seems abit much. 😉

Watching highlights of Chelsea v West Ham last night it occurred to me why Mata hasn't been getting good chances recently causing his goals to completely dry up.

Frank Lampard. Lampard was taking up goalscoring positions in the box whenever Chelsea went on the attack and was the furthest forward on several occasions. The very positions Mata might take without him. With Lampard providing the goal threat, Mata sat back slightly and played creator - exceptionally well it must be said - but his only chance seemed to be a shot from that position outside the area, where considerably fewer shots go in.

Wouldn't be surprised if the FPL history shows Mata scoring less when Lampard starts.

My decision to sell him this GW for Caz thus rests on whether Lampard will start again.

Strange to say I'm wrong when it's the opposite.

        GWs Mata has scored
        6 8 9 15 16 19 23 24 25
        Minutes Lampard played in each
        0 1 0 0 12 18 90 90 90

Mata hasn't scored since then and Lampard has played all those games.

Well you can scrap the earlier rounds with Di Matteo being in charge at that time and a bit of a different system. And you clearly show that Mata has scored with Lamps playing.

Now look at his shooting stats the past few games they have dropped off, the volume just has not been there. That could be down to the opposition or him just trying to get others involved or tiredness. If you looked at the last game as you said you could see that he had the same amount of chances as Lamps. Mata also shoots a lot from outside of the box so scoring constantly cant be expected. He will pick it up soon.

He has also scored goals in europa and in the cup so managers have been unlucky. If there is a reason to get rid it would be rotation, but certainly not because of Lampard.

I thought Mata was very unlucky not to get more points vs West Ham. Few deflected passes prevented him from getting another assist or two, and he also had a terrific 1-on-1 with the keeper which he probably should have scored.

Yeah my point is not about assists, if anything they should go up from playing creator, but shots and thus goals. Remember when he was nearing the end of his scoring run, did express concern about how few shots he was getting. Course goals are what you really want from a midfielder.

Stick to the point - simply that the goalscoring potential appears to have decreased. Don't misread it as "Mata is a bad option". That's for you to decide.

Also, clearly all things being equal you go for the midfielder with greater scoring potential.

yeah but this is FPL where assist potential can be handy too...and Lampard has very little of that. Whereas Mata offers a supreme assist threat over other players because of his creativity. He got 3 assists in one game in the DGW let's not forget...that was better than one goal as captain!

He has never been a big shooter this season, he's just been very efficient at converting the chances he's had at a rate that was probably unsustainable.

If you compare gameweeks 1-19 with gameweeks 20-30, his shots in the box has fallen only slightly (1.5 to 1.3 per 90 minutes), and his chances created have increased by a similar amount (3 to 3.2).

    PROBLEM:

If Chelsea have the double gameweek in 33, the temptation on the wildcard is obviously to throw in three mid or budget strikers (probably Giroud, Berbatov and Tevez), and go heavy on the midfield (Hazard, Walcott, Cazorla, Mata Fellaini etc).

BUT...... the very next week RVP has Villa at home, and will obviously be a highly desirable captain choice, where all the double gameweekers have duffish fixtures. So you'll want him in, and you won't have the money to switch up from Giroud.

SOLUTION: Wildcard in 32, save up the transfer in 33, and then in 34 do a double free transfer: Hazard down to Maloney, and Giroud up to Van Persie. Good plan?

No you still have much more to fill for DGW36 I´d say. United, City, Swansea, Wigan.

This is a way of getting both a Wigan and a United player in, which also gives me a United captain for 34. Best of both worlds as far as I can see.

Problem is you have 3 GWs(FT) to plan till GW33 while you only have 2 GWs(FT) till GW36 and City have expensive players that will force you to move around looking for value on your team imo.

This is probably sensible, but not for me, thanks. I need the differentials from the guys on the top if I'm going to have any chance of winning. I think many of them will keep RVP through, so I'll lose him.

Yes I admit you´ll have to take some risks indeed.

I´m not in the same situation as you (I can only dream with it) but have to catch on my MLs so gone with Rooney and Cazorla... not much point with Cazorla now but you understand the value in Rooney.

Because Chelsea and Tottenham both have Europa league. They are currrently scheduled to play GW33, but that match will be cancelled if Chelsea win the FA Cup replay and GW33 midweek is one of very few opportunities to replay it. Fulham have no other commitments to worry about.

theres 3 more fixtures to be pencilled in
The United/Chelsea replay should clear things up - but you have to see predicting chelsea as a very risky business, given their favouritres for the Europa League, its hard to say when those fixtures will occur
The best outcome for FPL from that replay is definitely a United win

The thinking is that if Chelsea win the Fa Cup Replay, the Chelsea vs Tottenham match will be moved midweek.

If Chelsea lose the FA Cup Replay, the Chelsea vs Fulham match could be moved midweek.

As a wildcarder, I'm looking at keeping him as the player that I keep on the bench in gameweek 33.

He's had three shots on goal a game since the Carling Cup final, where the supposedly lost their motivation etc. That's good enough for me I think.

As a wildcarder, Fellaini is too good an option for his price, I think.

In the Chelsea 33 scenario, I'm looking at a wildcard frontline of something like this:

Hazard, Lampard, Fellaini, Walcott, Michu (benched)
      Giroud, Tevez, Berbatov.

A mix between the doubles for that week and being set up for the doubles in 36, basically.

I think the next game is the key one for working out their position in the team. Scesney could easily start against Reading, in my opinion, but if Fabianski gets it, you'd have to say he looks pretty set up.

The discussion is still active. I can't see why removing it from recent comments will have any effect. Next week recent comments will move at pace again so I hardly think it was a vital tool for finding the thread. Besides, most folk interested in the tournament have already been active in the thread and know where to find it. It's also still featured and I'll keep it on the frontpage at all times. I'm not sure the tournament needs new recruits 😉 but a reminder post in here now and again, if that is the case, is fine.

I do not want ICC banter finding its way into article comments though. All the talk of West Indies and South Africa is just puzzling and off-putting to visitors who are not aware of the tournament.

If they find West Indies and South Africa references are puzzling, they're going to be really screwed during the international break with all those foreign teams they've never heard of.

Don't think we can blame the ref, though. Wales were very, very good. England need to lose with a bit of humility - ok to seek clarification from the ref for some decisions, if you want - in fact it's in the team's best interest to do so - but do it privately, not in the media.

Rubbish. The reffing of the breakdown was a travesty. The reffing of the scrum was criminal. It is about time rugby referees were put under the spotlight.

Wales were good - but so were we. Don't contribute to the myth-making.

This is very optimistic, but what are the chances of George McCartney playing both games of the DGW for West Ham? He would be a straight replacement to Harte, cost 3.8, and have a DGW. What's not to like?

Very unlikely I'd say. The pecking order is not certain, although I wouldn't be surprised if O'Brien right-back and McCartney left-back is the eventual first choice setup. I doubt Allardyce will throw him straight in and certainly not in both games but we have a week or so to test the water.

We certainly have goals and attempts from set-plays under team stats. Assists from set-plays is an interesting one - we have goals from corners and throws but we don't split free-kicks. Also, Opta have two phases of play that rule that a goal is from a throw or corner when actually, it's not direct from a set-play. We need to look at these stats more in the summer to break them down.

Hi guys, only managed around the average score the past few weeks but still somehow in the top 2.5k. I've got 2 free transfers. Any advice?

    Begovic, Bunn
    McAuley, Davies, Harte, Onuoha, Demel
    Bale, Mata, Sissoko, Walcott, Michu
    RvP, Sturridge, Remy

I was thinking maybe McAuley > Mertesacker but beyond that i don't really know. My defence is crap.

i doubt it, it was a break away against now defence and a big deflection. he may well get his starting place back but more because of anichibe being average. i wouldnt bother with the DGW with him as he'll only probably get 90 mins over the 2 games

Will have to see how his form is closer to the time. I can't make decisions like that so far advanced

That's an option to free up fond for dgwer

With the upcoming DGW and the spurs fixtures at this time could be a great idea.

It was tough to get rid of Hazard a while back in the early season but it had to be done and definitely paid off. Could be another difficult decision that could go either way.

Depends which of Chelski or United have the DGW33. If it's United then I think I'll keep and try for a front 7 of:

      Bale Walcott Santi Fellaini
      Rooney Suarez/Sturridge ?

      ? being RVP/Giroud...
