With attention understandably focused on Manchester Unitedโ€™s impending record signing of Angel Di Maria, the capture of fellow Argentine Marcos Rojo for ยฃ16 million has taken a back seat. Nevertheless, the clubโ€™s third summer recruit could be a crucial piece of the jigsaw โ€“ manager Louis van Gaal sees the 24-year-old as integral to his plans and has waxed lyrical over the defenderโ€™s versatility:

โ€œMarcos is very gifted. He has played at the highest level in world football and can play either as a central defender or left-back. He has ability, physical strength and a willingness to learn that means he has a very bright future ahead of him. He had a very strong World Cup and has been playing in Europe for a couple of years now. He is a very good addition to the team.โ€

THE HISTORY

Recruited by his local side Estudiantes de La Plata at just ten years of age, Rojo signed his first professional contract in 2009. Promoted to the first team, he was employed predominantly as a left-back and managed 53 appearances in three years, scoring four times and helping his club win the Copa Libertadores and Argentine Primera Division.

Despite signing a five-year deal with Spartak Moscow in December 2010, Rojo made a total of 17 appearances and delivered a single goal and assist in a forgettable spell before moving to Sporting Lisbon for ยฃ3.5 million in July 2012. His first year with the club was disastrous; rash tackling, positional naivety and temper tantrums contributed directly to the sideโ€™s worst season in their existence.

Last year the side enjoyed a rebirth, though, and Rojo began to impress Europeโ€™s top scouts. Lisbon secured Champions League football by finishing second, utilising him as centre-half in a backline that conceded just 12 goals in 29 games. Rojo proved to be a decent goal threat from the back and scored seven times in 61 outings for the Portuguese outfit, though itโ€™s fair to say his disciplinary record leaves something to be desired and may deter some Fantasy suitors โ€“ he picked up 23 yellows and was dismissed on five occasions during his time with Sporting.

On the international stage, Rojo made his debut for Argentina back in February 2011 and has subsequently represented his country on 28 occasions, finding the net once.

THE PROSPECTS

Although he stands six foot one and is adept at centre-half, Rojo built his reputation as a pacey attacking full-back, with excellent close control and the ability to beat an opponent before rifling in pinpoint crosses. While most expect Luke Shaw โ€“ when fully fit โ€“ย to take up the role on the left, whether in a 3-5-2 or 4-3-3 formation, Rojo is certainly adept in the positionย and offers a definite alternative if Van Gaal chooses to overlook the youngster. In the recent World Cup, for example, he executed the most key passes and the second-most crosses of any defender in the tournament.

In terms of pitch time, Van Gaalโ€™s statement above looks key. Rojo is versatile enough to offer United the chance to switch tactics during matches, moving from the heart of a back-three to left-back in a four-man back-line (or vice versa) and perhaps gives him an advantage over his defensive team-mates in terms of security.

Given the clubโ€™s current injury woes, it seems we wonโ€™t have a clear picture of Van Gaalโ€™s intentions until he has a fully-fit squad to choose from, though even if Shaw edges ahead for the position on the left, Rojoโ€™s installation will afford United a much-needed injection of pace through the middle.

Available for 6.0 in FPL, Rojo is the Red Devilsโ€™ most expensive defensive option after Shaw suffered a drop to 5.9 but itโ€™s something of an understatement to suggest his new side have done little to vindicate our investment to date. With United conceding three goals in their opening two fixtures, few will be willing to risk so much until the Old Trafford outfit begin to show some signs of solidity. Once his work permit comes through, Rojo looks a definite starter and has some very strong fixtures in the upcoming six (bur, QPR, lei, WHM, EVE, wba), though, as weโ€™ve seen so far, whether Van Gaalโ€™s side have the form to take advantage is another matter entirely.

      So do I

Shame I can't find any stream of the game - would like to do some Newcastle scouting. Feeling the growing urge inside me to buy de Jong and captain him.

Can't help I'm afraid (and couldn't even if I could if you see what I mean ๐Ÿ™‚ ) I'd like to get him but not sure who I'd lose out of Hazard, Fabregas, Ramsey, Sigurdsson - one of the Chelsea boys I guess but hard to see who.

I've got Davis but he needs to go for a 4.5 player probably. I see value in way too many players, it's deeply frustrating!

I fancy him for those fixtures. Took him into my UFPL team a few days ago but i don't think he'll get into the FPL squad.

Possibly a bit risky for UFPL in my view - I'm going to avoid injury prone players if possible otherwise I'll spend all my points on loans!

            hmmm, a valid point there.

I already have Agüero and Kolarov... maybe i should consider the safety of this squad again.

      Yes please

I think I need to restructure my team; currently thinking Cahill to Clyne and Young to Sigurdsson for -4.

Then GW4 bring in Naismith for Bojan which will give me approx £0.9 to improve my defence. Hopefully S Taylor will play GW3 in Williamson's absence and I'll see how Rio does against SUN but they are the two under threat atm.

Will probably play Siggy most weeks in a 5 man midfield with exception of GW4 against Chelsea away

The above was yesterday, now with the impending rise of Siggy and drop for Bojan night need to rethink?

      Thanks

Yeah, this is going to take a few transfers to fix.

        1. Uncle Gamst
          12 years, 1 month ago

Thanks do you really think that:

Cahill (eve) > Clyne (whu ),
          Young (bur)> Siggy (WBA)
Bojan (city and inj) > Naismith (CHE)

for -8 points is worth it? Can't do just do bottom 2 as 0.5 short?

          any suggestions

Someone mentioned rotation was a bad tactic, what do you think about rotation (mostly for defenders and keepers)?

    1. Andrew
      12 years, 2 months ago

I am a fan of rotation. Sure, It doesn't always work out and you'll get a goalkeeper who keeps a clean sheet against the "harder" opposition but I prefer to have 2 first team playing goalkeepers.

      1. HUMZAH96

    2. tw
      12 years, 2 months ago

I think rotation in defense and goal can be pretty good. helps you avoid having your 4m and 4.5m defenders playing against the top sides. just think attacking rotation is silly as it's more likely for an attacker to score in a tough fixture than a defender to keep a cs in a tough fixture imo

I didn't say rotation itself was a bad tactic, I said that personally I've found it too frustrating when players with good form/fixture blank and the guy with the bad fixture you bench goes on to score points, particularly in attack where in previous seasons I might have 2x 5.5m midfielders to rotate for the final spot. I decided to go with a regular front 7 and 4.5m bench fodder to avoid that this season.

I'm still rotating defenders, but not keepers as I opted for Foster/Myhill to free funds (and they have a tendency to do well in tougher fixtures, such as Southampton away this past weekend).

Think about it. Why did you originally get DDG?

    3. Kerz

IMO, A is your best bet. Gives you 2 FTs for the int. break and a bonus 0.6 for upgrades...

      Lamela IMO

        That's what I'm leaning towards

Get the one you like. Both equally likely to score or assist.

Eriksen better stat wise... Lamela looked more threatening watching the game live. 50/50 IMO

    6. M.I.A.

      Thanks all.

I think it really is a 50/50 between them. Both should score well.

Does anyone think Di Maria will be a help or a hidrance to Mata FPL wise?

I probably would have had Gayle for GW1 if they didn't sign Richardson!

whats the consensus on balotelli? worth the 10.0 layout? if you could choose either him or di maria, which would it be, and why?

    1. sinik
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Di Maria because name a reason.

Balotelli is a diva, he'll fight with teammates, he'll get booked a lot and there are better striker options.

    2. Sánchez
      12 years, 2 months ago

If priced evenly, Balotelli for me.
But I wanted him at 9.5.
10.0 is a bit more than I value him

      1. Exeter Gently
        12 years, 2 months ago

agreed, i asked about and most assumed he'd be at the 9-9.5 bracket. 10.0 seems a bit much

    3. A.T
      12 years, 2 months ago

I wouldn't go near him personally. Unless he becomes good obviously.

      1. Exeter Gently
        12 years, 2 months ago

isn't he good though? inconsistent, yes. but he can be unplayable too. although i guess too often that can be said of many a player

        1. A.T
          12 years, 1 month ago

He was awful last time he was here. I haven't seen him since.

    4. Clam. โ˜˜๏ธ

No way is he worth the 10. Much rather have Di Maria but even then I doubt I'll get him.

    5. SC not pearls before swine

He looks a little too pricy for me. A Sturridge injury would bring him into consideration though.

Is it worth wildcarding for this?

    Old Team:

    Krul (Elliot)
    Clyne/Azpi/Hutton (Kelly) (Chester)
    Siggy/Ramsey/Fab/Sterling/Tadic
    Costa/Rooney (Wood)

    Possible Wild Card Team:

    Krul (Elliot)
    Azpi/Rose/Kompany (Clyne) (Chester)
    Siggy/Hazard/Lamela/Ramsey/Sterling
    Costa/Adebayor (Wood)

    Thoughts?

    1. finkfankfunk

no worth wildcarding for those changes, imo

    Who to transfer in???
    A - Clyne
    B - Clichy
    C - Dier
D - Someone I should not have forgot? Under 5.5

probably Bertrand over Clyne based on the Big Numbers article and being .1m cheaper

Need to offload Bojan and Eriksen. £2M banked.

So, a mid and a fwd for £15.5M

    Have...

    Fabs, Ramsey, Siggy, Mata
    Jovetic, Rooney

    1. Kerz
      12 years, 2 months ago

      Why offload Eriksen ?

      1. mvtaylor

        See below.

    2. A.T

      What's wrong with Eriksen?

      1. mvtaylor
        12 years, 2 months ago

I don't like our fixtures and I don't want an 8M mid who isn't firing (albeit through a bit of bad luck) and will also be falling in price.

I hung on to Mata last week through the price drop as he had the fixtures and got rewarded for that, but we don't have fixtures as good as United.

Also a slight downgrade on Eriksen allows me a slight upgrade on Bojan as there's no 5.5M or under forward who I think is going to keep the scoring going. Naismith and Weimann both have garbage fixtures and anyone else is a total gamble.

        1. A.T
          12 years, 1 month ago

Fair enough. You're struggling to get a decent fwd there. Dropping Mata would help! Sterling would be a good move but you've no faith in Naismith so....

      2. Andrew
        12 years, 1 month ago

He doesn't seem to have the form at the moment. 2 blanks and one of them in a 4-0 win. Dunno, I am normally patient (much to my detriment last season) but I'm thinking he isn't good for 8m when I already have 4 other great midfielders.

    3. Voice of the Mysterons

      Swop Eriksen for Lamela

      1. mvtaylor
        12 years, 2 months ago

Cheers for the post all the same but I don't want to do a sideways move like that.

        1. Andrew
          12 years, 1 month ago

I'm thinking of getting rid of the same 2 players for -4 hit. Unlike you I don't have Jovetic so i'm thinking Jovetic for Bojan and Ward Prowse (or Larsson) for Eriksen

    Krul Elliot
    PVA Clyne Hutton Taylor Chambers
    Siggy Ramsey Sterling Young Albrighton
    Rooney Aguero Costa

    £2.4m in the bank

    Young to
    A) Chadli
    B) Tadic
    C) A.N. Other (& upgrade Chambers)

    1. Ohhhhh Gary Macca!

How can I even get on a de Jong/tadic band wagon????

How can I sell one of Ramsey mata fabregas siggy lamella? Not to mention I want sterling hazard and silva?
Midfield is an absolute gold mine, anyone who does not play 5 mids will pay dearly.

    1. Sunny ๐Ÿ˜Ž
      12 years, 2 months ago

Forwards are not that behind either with Aguero, Rooney, Costa, RVP, Sturridge, Balotelli, Jovetic, Adebayor.
I'm firmly in the 3-5-2 camp for now though ๐Ÿ˜€

    2. Clam. โ˜˜๏ธ
      12 years, 2 months ago

Similar dilemma myself. Powerful 5 man midfield definitely the way to go when there's not all that much choice in the forwards option.

    Sturridge>Jovetic a good shout?

I think Sturridge is a bit overpriced this season and I could use the funds to upgrade a budget mildfielder.

I'd keep him. Although I agree he's overpriced.
