Alan Pardew made his first move in the transfer market as manager of Crystal Palace earlier today, after acquiring Yaya Sanogo on loan from Arsenal until the end of the season.

As he looks to bolster an attack that scored a meagre two goals in the seven league matches prior to his arrival, the former Newcastle boss admitted that the 21-year-old has been on his, and Palace’s, respective radars for some time:

“He’s a young player with tremendous promise, somebody that I have tracked personally and this club has too so that fitted well. We have given him an opportunity, he needs to play more games and I think he’s ready for that and he proved that at Arsenal. It’s tough to get in their team but he’s closer to the starting action with us.”

As the injury situation eases for Arsenal, Sanogo’s chances of starts look remote at the Emirates right now. The youngster is optimistic, however, that the move to Selhurst Park will help him garner a little more top-flight experience:

“When the Arsenal manager spoke with me about Crystal Palace I was very happy because I want to play more games. I think Palace are a good team, I watched the game against Tottenham and it was a great performance from the guys. I hope I can help the club have a successful second half of the season… My ambition is to keep on and every day work hard on the training ground, and try to always play. It would certainly be good to play [more] for my adaptation of the league. I have spoken to the manager and he says if I work hard, I will play, and to improve every day after training.”

The History

Sanogo’s youth career kicked off in his native France back in 2005 when he joined local side Les Ulis. A year later, he was snapped up by Auxerre and rapidly rose up through the ranks with a series of prolific displays. After notching 15 times in 31 appearances for the club’s B team in 2009/10, Sanogo made his Ligue 1 debut that same season before a serious leg injury kept him on the sidelines for a number of months.

After recovering in time for the 2011/12 campaign, Sanogo scored just once in seven appearances as his side slipped into the French Second Division. A return to the lower leagues saw him rediscover his eye for goal, though – after netting 10 times in just 13 Ligue 2 outings, Sanogo was snapped up by Arsene Wenger in July 2013. So far, though, his time at the Emirates has been restricted mainly to substitute outings – a single goal and three assists in 20 appearances, over the course of 878 minutes, underlines a clear lack of opportunities.

On the international stage, Sanogo played a total of 62 times from Under-16 to Under-21 level for France. Despite registering an impressive 37 goals, he’s yet to make the step up to the senior side.

The Prospects

Bearing in mind that Palace’s most prolific strikers this season are Dwight Gayle and Fraizer Campbell, with three goals apiece, it’s clear that Pardew needs reinforcements up front. So far, the new manager has rolled out a 4-3-3 formation over both matches in charge and started Glenn Murray – back from a loan stint at Reading – as his preferred lone striker. Discussing his intentions, Pardew had confirmed he’s in the market for fresh faces:

“We are kind of monitoring strikers. My pool of strikers don’t have any problem with that. They know competition is coming in. [Glenn] Murray was terrific and I was really pleased with him; that is a boost for us but hopefully there will be a striker or two arriving.”

The Eagles have allegedly been knocked back by Rickie Lambert and are also amongst a host of clubs eyeing up Jermain Defoe for a loan deal. Standing six foot four, Sanogo certainly has the stature to lead the line on his own, though his lack of experience (and scoring record) at the highest level still raises question marks over his likelihood of nailing down a starting berth – particularly if Palace continue with a 4-3-3 formation from here on in. With Yannick Bolasie and Mile Jedinak still to return, though, Pardew could yet move to two up front and bolster the youngster’s chances of more minutes.

As we’ve discussed in recent articles, Pardew’s intentions to attack could force us to look at the Eagles’ options in a different light. After toiling so badly in the latter stages of Neil Warnock’s second stint in charge, they’ve fallen far from our Fantasy radars but Saturday’s 2-1 win over Spurs saw them rack up 21 attempts and 15 efforts inside the area in Pardew’s first league match at the helm – encouragingly, no side bettered those stats over Gameweek 21.

With the fixtures falling firmly in their favour (bur, EVE, lei, NEW), Palace certainly have the opportunity to string together some morale-boosting displays to strengthen their fight for survival. Priced at just 4.7 in the Fantasy Premier League game, Sanogo could find his way into our plans as a cut-price third striker, allowing us to splash more cash in midfield or defence, but as Wilfried Zaha has shown, a loan move to Selhurst Park doesn’t necessarily spell success. At present then, Jason Puncheon, at 5.5, seems the likeliest route into Palace’s attack, though at that price, Sanogo is worth monitoring if he can finally start to settle in the Premier League.

I've gone with different approach and strategy, how many thinks this is madness?

    Forster/krul
    Clyne/bertie/Terry/Ivanovic (Taylor)
    Sanchez/haz/chadli (Boyd, Jones(double bur))
    Kane/Austin/Agüero

    So, how much madness??

A jolly 150 to leader, around 50 to getting cash back

3-4-3 usually scores more than 4-3-3.

I suggest you downgrade a defender and bring in Downing or Siggy as your 4th midfielder.

I've been playing that all season but my mind tells me that these four defenders are more consistent than both sigge and downing

The four defenders are all good, but don't have quite as many points per game as Downing or Siggy.

It's not just which formation you play, but which players you choose within that formation.

In many mini-leagues, having both Terry and Ivanovic should be a good enough differential without also changing your formation.

You could also save a little money if needed by changing your goalkeeper combination.

Another way to make up ground might be to improve your captain choices.

Well went with Sanchez last week, rvp's 2 goal match a month ago and Austins hatty, so I've had no probs with captaincy lately:)
will prob change at least one defender to free up some cash,
            And might switch goalie combo

If you keep choosing your captains that well, then I would be surprised if you don't soon improve your position in your league. 🙂

Probably out of my three lucky guesses 🙁 and would need 17 more if to rise to league leader

150 points is a lot to make up, but the 50 point gap to be in the money is definitely bridgeable.

3 good guesses in the last month is pretty impressive though. If your captain choices had been that good earlier in the season (especially if they included Costa for the first 4 GWs) then you would be much closer to the leader already.

I think it's a great strategy, given that you're chasing the league leaders in your cash league.

I would suggest freeing up some funds to improve on Jones in MID - perhaps a cheaper rotating GK combo or keeping Forster and downgrading one of Clyne/Berty to a cheaper DEF option

If you can nab a Siggy/Downing type in place of Jones, then you'd be set!

Thanks for the cheering up input. What do you think of changing Tyler and krul to not playing goalie / defender and fretting up 1,5 with the risk of being short of players in future?

If you can find bargain-priced starters to include in your side - you're laughing. Naylor > Baird for example.
If you can find the cash to upgrade your 4th MID, then you're good!

I'm thinking about it, though it's a total punt given ADM's lack of form.

Still, QPR are definitely liable to give up a few goals. Also, this probably isn't a bad week to go for a slightly punty captain.

Would very much appreciate you guys picking this apart:

    Foster (Myhill)
    Bertrand Clyne Terry/*Ivanovic (PvA Wasilewski)
    Hazard Fabregas ADM Sanchez (Boyd)
    Aguero Kane Ings

1.6m ITB (1m if Ivanovic over Terry)

May well do Boyd > 4.2m before the deadline. Cash will most likely be spent on Ings > Austin in a couple of weeks.

Gone for a gamble with the wildcard.
    Final team
    Adrian, Pantilimon
    Terry, Fonte, Trippier, Wisdom, Kelly
Hazard, Di Maria, Sterling, Puncheon, Boyd
    Aguero, Rooney, Kane

0.6 ITB allows me to put Costa in after City game which is what I'll be doing. Silva and Costa in after the city game vs Chelsea 🙂

Not sure statistically - but I tend to find CSs more difficult to predict at the end of the season. Mid table teams with nothing to play for and relegation threatened teams with everything to play for always throw up 'surprise' results.

    Current team:

    Siggy, Sanchez, Silver, Hazard (Albrighton)
    Austin, Kane, Costa

    Potential WC:

    Kane, Costa, AGUERO

I'd probably done as AB says,
for example Costa + Terry --> Kun + Bertrand
Then you'll have soton x3 like me, might not be wise, but
            ..
I think it all depends on agüeros playing time and performance against the gunners

Bellerin's speed might give him an edge at this point as he looks to have improved and Chambers can look like a very weak link against quick wingers

If Alderweireld is out he's priority, probably straight swap for a saints full back. Then it's up to you if you want to take a 4 point hit to get aguero in for coasta or giroud before his price runs away from you.

Walcott probably has more potential to score big - but coming back from injury is always a bit uncertain. Saints fixtures look good too and Tadic has set pieces. I'd probably go with Tadic - but its a tight call.

WC team 24.5M for 2 defenders, a mid and striker.

Not sure on what option to go for!

    Panti Heaton
    Terry Clyne Wisdom ? ?
    ADM Hazard Sanchez Boyd ?
    Aguero Kane ?

1 - Hutton, PVA, Fabregas, Austin
    2 - Jones, Hutton/PVA, Siggy/Chadli, Pelle
    3 - Jones, Hutton/PVA, Sterling, Pelle/Austin
    4 - any other combo for 24.5M

I hate how template my WC team is, but I can't think of any worthwhile changes. Only 0.7m in the bank so not much wriggle room.

    Foster, Guzan
    Bertrand, Wisdom, PVA, Dummett, Trippier
    Sanchez, Hazard, Silva, Sterling, Downing
    Austin, Costa, Aguero

Anyone a glaringly obvious candidate for an upgrade?

    1. Najoman86

Solid side, but you'll have a weekly benching issue. Perhaps you could downgrade to a cheaper 5th MID & use funds elsewhere (in DEF, for example)?

Burnley have tough fixtures on the horizon - I'd rethink Trippier. Not fussed on Dummett either. I'd downgrade one of them and upgrade the other.

    Hey All,
Would it be worth a one-week punt (with a FT) to shift Zabaleta to Creswell?
Other FT to be used for either Rooney or Costa to Aguero

    Appreciate any thoughts

I just dumped cresswell but was maybe a mistake, both teams haven't had a cs since gw17 and leaked same amount of goals since then. Both teams also has similar upcoming fixtures.
I'd prob stick with cresswell since it's less of a rotation risk, although Zab got a little better attack return to offer
