Lacking strength in depth up front, Swansea City recruited Bafetimbi Gomis last summer in an attempt to provide their leading frontman, Wilfried Bony, with competition. The Ivorian responded by stamping his authority on the lone striker berth, netting eight goals in between Gameweek 7-16, thus restricting his counterpart to just three starts over the first half of the season.

In the wake of Bony’s big-money move to Manchester City, Gomis initially struggled to impart his presence, before a late flourish alerted Fantasy managers to his potential next term.

Key Factors

  • Gomis clearly profited from a free run at the lone forward berth upon Bony’s winter departure; the French marksman recorded just one goal prior to Gameweek 21 yet notched six strikes and one assist from that point onwards. Looking at his minutes per goal average before (581) and after (198) that point offers the truest indicator of an upturn in form. In truth, the former Lyon striker needed time to calibrate his sights, as evidenced by the five consecutive blanks he carded at the turn of the year. In the latter stages, Gomis clearly exhibited greater confidence and become more attuned with manager Garry Monk’s philosophy, netting six times in his final ten appearances of the season – with three of these being cameos of 20 minutes or less. Furthermore, Gomis reaffirmed his credentials by scoring against the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City, revealing fixture-proof potential that should be further investigated next term.
  •

  • Considering he chalked up a modest haul of 84 points last season, Gomis is set to remain in the mid-price bracket. Conversely, Gylfi Sigurdsson is poised for a sizeable price increase – in light of the 6.0-priced midfielder notching an impressive 154 points – which could render Gomis the most valuable route in Swansea’s attack. This line of thought is lent greater credence by the wealth of high-priced midfielders (the likes of Eden Hazard, Alexis Sanchez and David Silva) who are already topping many shopping lists, making it harder to isolate funds for a pricier Sigurdsson, who could easily come in around 7.5 – 8.0 next time out.
  •

  • Delving into the stats that defined his strong finish to the campaign, Gomis executed a shot every 27.6 minutes from Gameweek 21 onwards. Put into perspective, only two forwards that clocked 1000+ minutes from that point on (Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane) fired off their attempts at a quicker rate. In addition, Gomis posted a shot accuracy of 44.2% and shot conversion rate of 14% from the point of Bony’s departure – intriguingly, that outstrips the Ivorian’s shot accuracy (36.4%) and conversion rate (13.6%) for the Swans in 2014/15.
  •

  • Gomis’ late-season displays certainly bode well for his prospects next time around. Speaking on the Frenchman’s showings, Monk heaped praise on Gomis, with the Swansea lone striker role looking his to lose:

“Of course he was frustrated in the early part of his time here because he is a big striker and people forgot what he had done his career; he’s played Champions League, he’s played international football, he’s scored a big number of goals in every single season. He’s a top player who wanted to feel pride in what he was achieving and being that No 1 – but he was never a problem. And I told him at the time, ‘Let’s have this conversation at the end of the season and I guarantee things will be different’. I think they are. He has been fantastic for us.”

  •

  • Monk’s occasional use of a midfield diamond behind a front two merely heightens Gomis’ security of starts. Whilst there’s no question over Sigurdsson’s starting role in either system, the Icelandic playmaker struggled for returns whenever Monk moved away from the default 4-2-3-1, as he was stationed somewhat deeper as a result of the switch.
  •

  • The arrival of new signing Andre Ayew may also have a bearing on Gomis’ prospects. The pacy Ghanaian will doubtless attract interest in pre-season, particularly if he’s confirmed as a midfielder across the games. Ayew will provide another direct attacking threat to the Swansea attack and a new avenue of service to Gomis as the lone striker. Certainly Sigurdsson’s appeal will be dented whilst Fantasy managers assess Ayew as an alternative, a factor that could initially leave many considering Gomis as the preferred option in Monk’s attack.

        Hey Jonty!

I'm wondering whether it would be possible to gather RMT data from last season, as I have a project in mind analysing any correlation between the RMT predictions and the points scored for each player and put my findings into a community article. Do you know if this could be possible?

I'm not sure it would. The predictions are altered each week and within the week depending on team news and injuries etc. So for example the best players from Gameweek 8 on a thursday could be completely different from the best on a Friday before the weekend. the system is designed to be organic and predict for that week.

          Does sound interesting though.

Hmm I see. Would it be possible to capture the predictions for each player every week based on the last RMT change? ie, right before the deadline?

              Possible - Yes
              Will it happen? - Unlikely.

Depends how much they believe in RMT as to whether they want analysis of its accuracy undertaken or not.

Yeah, I may start this as a project for next season then. Would The Professor know if an 'export' function could be implemented as a way to capture the data in a database format eg. Excel?

let's assume you do all this work...it doesn't mean your analysis of what happened in one season will have the slightest bearing on the next

if Mark and Jonty are actually updating it regularly then you know they'll be doing a decent job just by looking at their ranking histories

but the key thing about using the RMT is to look at the estimates with a very critical eye and decide for yourself what estimates you believe and what estimates you think are shaky

Ok thanks Jonty. Do you keep the data from the previous season? Just to clarlify, he project I am thinking about would try to emphasise the usefulness of the RMT tool and to encourage users to use it more as well as non-members to sign up!

They wont have the data from previous seasons, the RMT is constantly altering variables. You would need to gather the data going forward yourself to do this.

If you intend to, then talk to Berbilly/Turdbird about automating the process.

@Berbinho: "It's football fans in general though. When Liverpool signed Markovic last year, Liverpool fan became Benfica experts. Its in the natural nature of fans."

Pretty much the same thing is happening this year with Kovacic. It's all rather tedious but it's just the nature of the transfer window. If you don't know the player then you have nothing to talk about so people don't like that!

I fully admit to using FM as a key source of knowledge. They scout players extensively so we don't have to 😉

No one should ever listen to me regarding young players, I tipped Yaya Sanogo to be the best striker in the world based on FM.

well this year they have Raheem Sterling as being born in Liverpool and Gerrard jumping =15 and Henderson jumping =10 even though they're close to the same height...so I've little confidence in the Liverpool scout

Not really. You have Young who has been playing very well but is in the long run not a good enough starter, Nani should be on his way out, ADM's best position is in LCM in a 4-3-3 IMO like in his last season at Madrid, Januzaj should be going on loan and Mata who is playing well on the right but is obviously not a winger.

I am sure it will be just fine. At least it is a different colour to usual. The may clash with opposing keepers occasionally though.

The good news is the players are at eye level, so when they look across the pitch the colour of the shirt will be clashing against the fans behind them, not the pitch.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal insists it will take time for new signing Memphis Depay to settle in the Premier League but he has backed him to excel at Old Trafford…

Van Gaal told the club’s official website: “I know Memphis well from our time working together in the Netherlands national team. He is a young versatile player who has the ability to play in a number of different positions.

"It will take time for Memphis to get used to the rhythm of the Premier League but I have no doubt that he has the potential to become a great footballer for this club and he is at the right club to continue the good work he has done so far.”

To be fair it was proven from his experiences at previous clubs that his teams wouldn't get going til about 3 months in as he gives a lot of information to his players (even when he'd go on to win the league).

I suppose it's true that a player is worth what someone is willing to pay, but I'm only judging "worth" on ability, i.e. Jo was never an £18m player even though City paid it.

i'm not disputing that they would seriously overpay at that fee, I just think that it's not surprising that City would pay 40-50mil for him, given their spending history and the home grown rule and inflated market today.

I suppose the point is that a lot of the prices they pay are quite surprising. In fact, I'm less startled by the Sterling figures than the Jo figure, to be entirely honest.

Yeah, Man City are just operating in their own bubble, they've overpaid on every single transfer in the last 2 years. The market has inflated, but not to the extent that any other club would value Sterling at £50m.

Aye, though I will say £38 million for Aguero was an excellent buy. But they've definitely overpaid for the majority of transfers, probably because clubs know that they're loaded.

They started well: Aguero, Silva, Toure, Kompany etc were excellent buys, I just mean the last couple of years. They've blown an insane amount and, bar Fernandinho and Mangala/Demichelis, none of the signings are regulars.

Aye, and even then the likes of Fernandinho blow very hot and cold. I'm surprised because they have some terrific youth players who they could count as homegrown but they aren't arsed bringing them through.

Sterling is worth 30M pounds. Last year he was a phenom and now he's a nobody? Please, let's stop this. Di Maria is one of the best wingers in the world but after ONE mediocre season(that he started pretty well) people make him out to be a loser. Last year there were people debating over whether Sterling was a 40-50 or 60M player.

things are different at City now

When they were first bought by Thaskin, and then the Arabs. they were like lottery winners who had no idea what to do with the money so just bought anything and everything no matter the cost

Now they are trying to run a proper football club and the owners would like to try and get the club to be self sufficient. The problem that City are finding now is that, like with United, when they make a call, another £5m-£10m gets added onto the price because "well they can afford it"

Why have Liverpool put a £50m tag on Sterling? Simple, they don't want to sell, and don't believe that anyone will pay that (but if someone is mad enough, they will take enough)

Liverpool will have to sell him this summer, if they don't want to miss out on several million pounds. His value is rumoured to be around £10mil in Jan due to some webster ruling

that's only what i've read on twitter, haven't actually looked into it myself to verity this. I assume that the home grown rule requirement needs to be fulfilled before the season starts?

Jesus, if that's true then they really are paying £30-40m to fill the home-grown quota.

the Webster ruling is something to do with players buying out their own contracts under certain circumstances...Andy Webster was at Hearts and wanted to go to Rangers

Sterling has relatively low wages at £30k per week compared to the wages he could command elsewhere so it might be very profitable for him to buy out his contract because he'd theoretically be able to get the transfer fee for himself

"...because he had served more than three years of his contract he was outside of FIFA's "protected period", and any compensation due to Hearts would, per Article 17, be based primarily on the amount of Webster's salary still outstanding..."

I think so. Borini has to be on the way out after the Sunderland transfer debacle last season. If they don't find anyone willing to take Balo, it may be Lambert heading out on loan.

I've been looking into the BT sports pricing options.

It's £5.00 a month for existing BT broadband customers like myself, it's likely to be £15+ for non BT customers, and it's free with BT TV.

The only charge for the basic BT TV package (that includes BT sport) is a £35 activation fee, so this appears to be the most economical option, for those wishing to watch BT sports.

No need to try and learn too much about 'tactical tweaks' on that one. Wasted money, every penny. Only gave me the frustrating feeling of indifference. Its all just a game of signing the best players. And it is simply because they have chosen not to invest in it, not because of the less powerful machine, because the 90's SMs were more developed than that iPad version of FM.

          Nah, not even close.
My problem with social media is that you are more or less expected to be available 24/7 and also flaunt(spelling?) every little detail about your life. What, when and where.
I guess your name is not Camp Mou, mine certainly aint Captain Crunch.

What? Are you suggesting my name is weird? How dare you!? 😀

But I don't think social media is even meant to mean only what you just described. That is just some forms of social media. It is like general media, too, is not just the so called reality shows, although it might look like will eventually be. Similarly social media can cover a lot more than just people reporting what they're doing.

Twitter is brilliant as a news aggregation tool. You can setup an account that cannot be "followed" and just follow those sources that are relevant to you. News services, transfer sites, etc.

          He's a natural born goalscorer.

He has that talent that you can't teach players - the ability to be in the right place at the right time.

I know he's going but I'm convinced whatever we end up getting for him is going to end up being a real bargain for the team that gets him.

That skill, like other tactical skills, can be and is taught.

Austin also could finish those chances with way better rate. I don't mean he is really bad, but not very good either, certainly not finishing at levels warranting the label 'natural born goalscorer'.

      £8.5m

If I was Austin I'd wait to see what happens to Kane at Spurs. If he goes to Man Utd then he's a natural replacement for Kane. No house move required either and he'll get a plethora of chances from Mason and Eriksen.

Vila don't play long ball either. They play like Sherwood always plays with early ball into the box, which if it happens to be a long ball then so be...but wherever it comes from it's an early ball.

Blackburn and Shearer played the same way....no mucking about.

I don't think either analysis is right, really. They're doing something that they just completely fail at, and thus it is pretty tough to say what's their real strategy. It might be an effort to a possession game without actually getting the possession. Or it might be that they try to play counter attack but just don't find passes that get them forward. Or it might be....

I don't know really. It's a bit of a mystery, but the bottom line is that it fails.

    Word going around is,

    Utd will replace:

    RVP(10m) with Kane(50m)
    DDG(25m) with Cech(10)
    Nani(10m) with Firmino(13m)

Lets say this happened, for a net price of 28m.
What do you make of it?

Maybe not easy, but I don't think he'd cost more than those 10M, if even that. He's getting age, he is 2nd choice, annd they've given him a freedom to choose his club. At that point, they're not in a position to ask for too high fee.

No, the basic reason, also implied by the reason you give, is that they've allowed Cech to choose his new destination as a reward for his long and loyal service.

Pretty attacking lineup. Still without real laterals. I fear Wilmots manages to make Belgium dull once again. He masters that pretty decently.
