Having racked up two goals and 14 assists for Ipswich in 2013/14, Aaron Cresswell’s raiding displays persuaded former West Ham boss Sam Allardyce to splash the cash last summer. Immediately nailing down a starting berth, the left-back was one of only four outfield players to feature from start to finish in every one of his side’s league fixtures in the previous campaign.

Cresswell’s displays saw him named as the Hammer of the Year and Player’s Player of the Year in his debut top-tier campaign and his performances were noteworthy enough to attract reported interest from Premier League big boys Manchester City and Chelsea.

Having opted to sign a new five-year deal at West Ham over the last couple of weeks, Cresswell will be keen to push on under new boss Slaven Bilic this time around as the Hammers prepare for their final season at Upton Park…

Key Factors

    • Cresswell’s haul of attacking returns last term (two goal and four assists) was more than respectable yet didn’t quite do justice to his impressive underlying statistics. Comparing his goal threat to fellow defenders, only Branislav Ivanovic (11) fashioned more attempts on target than the Hammers full-back over the course of the previous campaign. Furthermore, Cresswell sat joint top – alongside Seamus Coleman – with regards to shot accuracy (47.4%) among those defenders that fired off at least ten attempts. Turning our attention towards his creative influence, Cresswell served up 34 chances for his team-mates, which was just two shy of Ivanovic’s total and only bettered by three other defenders.

    • Having tallied 129 points last time out, Cresswell has retained his 5.5 starting price. Only three teams (Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United) accrued fewer clean sheets than the Irons (nine) in the previous campaign, so unless Bilic’s arrival engenders a substantial improvement on the defensive front, Cresswell’s value lies in his attacking potential. The fact that the former Ipswich Town man never pushed past the 5.7 mark last season and ended with a mere 5% ownership suggests he could become a differential to watch in that mid-price bracket, should he be overlooked once again.

    • Beyond a flirtation with the top four berths at the halfway point of the season, West Ham’s promising campaign fell apart. Their greatest shortcoming was a severe lack of goals, given that the final 16 league matches of Sam Allardyce’s reign harvested just nine. With Bilic at the helm, however, the Hammers are likely to be adopt a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 set-up – crucially, the former Croatia manager, who’s been stressing the importance of attacking with fluidity and numbers, favours inverted wingers, which should afford Cresswell license to maraud forward and provide the width, thus enhancing his attacking prospects.

    • Notwithstanding a trip to London rivals Arsenal in Gameweek 1, West Ham’s start to the new campaign throws up some enticing match-ups. Visits to Liverpool (Gameweek 4) and Manchester City (Gameweek 6) should also prove stern tests, yet the remaining six fixtures up to Gameweek 9 (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR, sun, cpl) all present decent opportunities for clean sheets.

    First draft. Tear it apart!

    Pantillimon / Fabianski
    Ivanovic / Koscielny / Coloccini / Martin / Vlaar
    Fabregas / YYT / Ramsey / Henderson / Wanyama
    Costa / Rodriguez / Deeney

    ITB: 2.5m

GK: Pantillimon / Fabianski between the posts is expensive (5m a piece) but both collect saves like nothing else. Home / Away rotation isn't great but over the first 20 games they play promoted teams 5 times, and never play last year's top 6.

DEF: Ivanovic / Koscielny from what look to be the two sturdiest defences in the league, and both have offensive presence. Three-way rotation of Newcastle / Norwhich / Villa for the last slot.

MID: We all want Hazard / Sanchez / Silva in midfield but thats a little expensive early-game. I've downgraded all of them so I have cash in the bank for wiggle-room in the early weeks. Henderson is here because I don't fancy anything else in the 5.5 - 7.0 price range, and he covers Liverpool I guess. Wanyama stand-out fifth mid for me.

FOR: Costa started hot last year and with a decent fixture list, should do well. Rodriguez is the only thing close to a punt here; Southampton playstyle is similar to 2013/14 so he should slip in fine, and they have maybe the best opening fixtures. Deeney's cheap and I've heard good things from people who follow the Championship.

ITB: Holding onto enough cash so I don't have to wildcard / take a hit to get in a big name if they start really hot. 2.5m is enough for Fabregas -> Hazard, YYT -> Silva, Ramsey -> Sanchez, Costa -> Aguero for example. I think I'm willing to risk starting with none of the huge names and save the cash for more selective upgrades after a couple of weeks.

Not sure it's worth rotating expensive goalkeepers when they're both good for save points, personally.

I don't see any reason for Kos over Mertz. Somebody did analysis under the new system, and they were very close for BAP potential.

      JRod is risky.

Might change around the budget defenders, everything else is preference.

      • 11 Years
      10 years, 5 months ago

10m for keepers is too much. With bad rotation (as you wrote yourself) you have to change it

Not sure about Colo and Vlaar. Bournemouth have some good fixtures in the beginning, maybe change to someone there

Midfield looks good, but I would get Haz instead of Fab because you have some money ITB for it

Nice front line but some question marks for J-Rod

And overall you lack Utd players

I expect Pardew will use him similarly to how he did at Newcastle, switching between the two:

      Bottom half opposition:
      McArthur - Cabaye
      Zaha - Puncheon - Bolasie
      Striker

      Top half opposition:
      McArthur - Jedinak
      Puncheon - Cabaye - Bolasie
      Striker

I think he is a good CAM, and a very good central midfielder.

Was at his best controlling midfield from deep, imo.

In other CL transfer news, Atletico Madrid, who are once again doing terrific job on transfer markets, has signed attacking midfielder Ferreira-Carrasco from Monaco.

Fee according to transfermarkt is €20M, or £14M, to which according to journals will be added bonuses according to performances and/or percentage of the re-sale value.

This deal is related to Monaco buying Cavaleiro, as Ferreira apparently didn't want to leave but was sold because the manager Leonardo Jardim wanted his highly unimpressive compatriot Cavaleiro, and Ferreira was a wanted asset in essentially similar position.

This was incredibly stupid business imo. Ferreira-Carrasco is same age as Cavaleiro, but has already established as the most important creative player of a team that got into the CL QF's and also clinched a CL spot for this season. Yet he moves for almost the same price as Cavaleiro, who in his whole season for Deportivo only made an unmistakable impression of mediocrity. For reference, transfermarkt.co.uk values Cavaleiro at £2.45M, and Ferreira-Carrasco £6.3M. Obviously you overpay for potential in both cases, but it is also obvious that Ferreira has showed much more potential and end product than Cavaleiro.

Monaco is supposed to play CL football next season. They make a profit of €5M + bonuses, which compared to CL money is negligible. And with Ferreira we know that we've got a CL level football player, whereas with Cavaleiro we're unsure if he can do it in low table La Liga football.

    From Sky

    OSPINA HAPPY DESPITE INTEREST

David Ospina says he wants to stay at Arsenal, even though he has hinted that he has offers to leave.

The Colombian, who is likely to be second choice at the Emirates behind Petr Cech next season, told AS Colombia: "As of today, I am an Arsenal goalkeeper. I have four years left on my contract. Let's see what happens.

"Everton? They are a very competitive team, that showed important things last season, with a good coach, and that plays good football. They are a team to take into account and a big possibility. There are some (other) possibilities, but my mind is on Arsenal. I want to continue there."

In other words he's not asking to leave because then he'd have to give up his loyalty bonus...

Perhaps, absolutely think he should leave. Everton would be a great club for him, he's PL standard.

So Cabaye gonna take penos and steal Puncheon's set pieces? Maybe Puncheon is not that great an option anymore.. got to find 0.5 for Cabaye by the looks of it

i like norwich villa and spurs in the first 6.. atleast they playing Arsenal and City at home too. Just feel Palace are gonna be THE bargain fpl side this season. Team looks fantastic and they were a great attacking threat last season with Pardew at the helm.. Feels much safer going for one of their mids over the likes of Ritchie etc

I think they'll both have their fair share. Right foot/left foot, great news for Scott Dann's scoring prospects if he stays there. Punch wasn't on pens anyway.

Unless we're playing with 4 at the back our goal *should* be to spend as little as possible on our 5th defender.

worth noting that Cabaye is a bit of a card risk from memory. Last season he picked up 6 yellows and 1 red card in 13 starts (and 11 sub apps)
