With a string of pre-season friendlies taking place this weekend, it seemed timely to catch up on all the summer action to this point.

Here’s a match by match breakdown of all the encounters, with details of scorers and lineups.

We’ll be covering all of today’s friendlies in a round-up tomorrow, while all the pre-season results, scout notes and form players are being captured and collated in our dedicated pre-season section.

Gateshead 0 Newcastle United 1

Steve McClaren earned victory in his first outing as Newcastle manager as Papiss Cisse’s first half spot kick proved decisive at Gateshead. Massadio Haidara was the man felled in the box, allowing the Senegalese striker to convert.

The Magpies boss opted to put out a solid first summer lineup, handing debuts to Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles and surrounding them with experienced first teamers. Mike Williamson, Haidara and Daryl Janmaat made up the rest of the Newcastle defence, while McClaren fielded a five-man midfield, anchored by Vurnon Anita and skipper Jack Colback – Moussa Sissoko, Yoan Gouffran and Siem de Jong provided the support for Cisse in attack.

De Jong’s performances will be of particular interest to Fantasy managers this summer after a first season of injury frustration on Tyneside. The Dutchman enjoyed a prosperous pre-season last year, only to be stricken from August until the final few matches of the campaign; De Jong is classified as a 6.5 midfield option in this season’s Fantasy Premier League.

RB Leipzig 5 Southampton 4

Southampton tasted defeat in their first pre-season clash but will be encouraged by the goalscoring return of striker Jay Rodriguez. His brace was the highlight in Fantasy terms, although new signings Juanmi and Cedric Soares also caught the eye with a goal apiece. The latter came off the bench on 69 minutes and also earned an assist to underline his attacking potential: Soares will be expected to claim the right-back berth following Nathaniel Clyne’s departure.

Ronald Koeman’s teamsheet was comprised of those players with some pre-season training behind them, with Maarten Stekelenburg earning a first half debut in goal, while Gaston Ramirez also started the first period following his return to the club after a somewhat patchy loan spell at Hull last season.

Darlington 2 Sunderland 4

Another forgotten winger, Emmanuel Giaccherini, was undoubtedly the star on show in Sunderland’s pre-season opener at Darlington. The Italian crafted two well-taken strikes, including a superb 20-yard effort in the second half.

Dick Advocaat named a strong initial lineup, with the likes of Patrick van Aanholt, Billy Jones, Jermain Defoe, Danny Graham, Lee Cattermole and Adam Johnson handed starts; Graham and second half sub Connor Wickham claimed the Black Cats’ other goals.

St Albans 0 Watford 4

Odio Ighalo made an early claim for a starting berth with two goals as the Hornets eased through their summer opener. Skipper Troy Deeney and substitute Connor Smith added further goals as Quique Sanchez Flores earned his first victory at the Watford helm.

The Spaniard immediately elected to go with a strong lineup for pre-season and, interestingly, utilised a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Gabriele Angella and Craig Cathcart were the centre-backs, with Ikechi Anya and Daniel Pudil at full-back; Anya is listed as a midfield option across the games.

Ben Watson and new singing Etienne Capoue anchored the midfeld in the double pivot, with Fernando Forestieri, Almen Abdi and Ighalo supporting lone striker Deeney.

Capoue earned an assist on his Watford debut, while Giedrius Arlauskis and Sebastian Prodl were also given their first run-outs from the bench.

Post-match, Flores was keen to emphasise that his side will need to show tactical flexibility for the season ahead…

“They are ready to play in a defence of four, a defence of three, a midfield of four or five, and for sure the response of the players has been amazing….I want to create a good block that will be able to move in defence, in midfield, in attack, to take control of the situation in all parts of the pitch.”

Red Bull Salzburg 3 West Brom 1

Tony Pulis side suffered defeat at the hands of the Austrian champions in West Brom’s first pre-season foray.

The Baggies boss named a strong initial lineup, with Craig Dawson, Joleon Lescott, Jonas Olsson forming an experienced back four with new signing James McClean fielded at left-back. Boaz Myhill took his place in goal in the absence of the injured Ben Foster, while Craig Gardner, Darren Fletcher, Claudio Yacob and Calum McManaman formed the midfield. Up top, Victor Anichebe led the line, with Stephane Sessegnon played up in support in a “number 10” role. Pulis made ten alterations on 50 minutes, with youngster Abil Nabi emerging from the bench to grab West Brom’s consolation.

West Ham 3 FC Lusitans 0
FC Lusitans 0 West Ham 1

Slaven Bilic’s side coasted through their first Europa League two-legged qualifier against their Andorran opponents, although the Croatian was not officially in charge for either encounter.

The Hammers opted for a 4-4-2 in both matches, turning to a mix of youth and experience to help them progress. James Tomkins skippered the side, while Morgan Amalfitano, Matt Jarvis and Diafra Sakho also started both fixtures.

Sakho notched twice in the first leg but was sent off within 15 minutes of the return match, with fellow forward Elliot Lee scoring the only goal of that tie. Sakho is now expected to miss the next three European encounters, starting with the second qualifying round first leg against Birkirkara FC on July 16.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Which is better?

    A) Rooney + Benteke + Yaya + Walcott

    Or

    B) Kun + Sakho + Mata + Ramsey

Generally, I'd say B. But obviously the doubts over Aguero and Sakho playing at Arsenal gives me concerns. Mata over Yaya and Ramsey over a bench potential Walcott makes sense. Can you afford Rodriguez instead of Sakho?

I'm really bored (if you can't tell), so I made a list of all the midfielders who since 2012/13 season, have had over 30 goals + assists combined, might find it interesting:

    Eden Hazard - 37 Goals, 36 Assists - 73

    David Silva - 23 Goals, 36 Assists - 59
    Santi Cazorla - 23 Goals, 32 Assists - 55
    Juan Mata - 26 Goals, 29 Assists - 55
    Yaya Toure - 36 Goals, 16 Assists - 52

    Theo Walcott - 24 Goals, 19 Goals - 43 (even with 1300 mins in 2 seasons)
    Raheem Sterling - 18 Goals, 23 Assists - 41

    Oscar - 18 Goals, 20 Assists - 38
    Aaron Ramsey - 17 Goals, 20 Assists - 37
    Jordan Henderson - 15 Goals, 21 Assists - 36
    Adam Johnson - 18 Goals, 18 Assists - 36
    Kevin Mirallas - 22 Goals, 13 Assists - 35
    Samir Nasri - 11 Goals, 24 Assists - 35
    Jason Puncheon - 18 Goals, 16 Assists - 34
    Adam Lallana - 17 Goals, 17 Assists - 34
    Philippe Coutinho - 13 Goals, 21 Assists - 34

Suspect I'll definitely have Hazard in my team. Had him all of last season and practically all of the one before as well from memory.

          Currently looking at:

          Schmeichel, Hamer
          Azpilicueta, Bellerin, Ward, PvA, Targett
          Hazard, Walcott, Mata, Deulofeu, Anya
          Aguero, Sakho, J. Rodriguez

Bellerin is very risky, especially at 5.5
Targett will only be good for a short period of time.

            I like the Deulofeu pick.

That striking force, is becoming a mini-template, seen so many teams with it 😉

    RTM pls

If I use all those information about new BPS, and also last years history about form I think first draft team is good team.

    PANTILIMON / 4,0
    MERTESACKER/ FONTE / SKRTEL / AZPILIZUETA / 4,0
OZIL / FABREGAS / YAYA TOURE / DEPAY / DOWNING
    GIROUD / KANE / DEFOE

recently avoid of those heavy hitters and think about 1-3 GW with no transfering

I haven't even seen Defoe's price, so won't comment on him.
I don't think Kane is worth that much, better options imo.
Chance Downing to a cheapie, albrighton maybe at 5.0, and try and get rooney/costa up top

also you have too many defenders (high priced ones anyway), swap out fonte & skrtel for 2 cheap rotating players, perhaps Morgan & N. Taylor for 9.5

I have Defoe myself and think he's a great shout - 5.5m, nailed on under Advocaat, proven Prem goalscorer. Very similar mid/st in general!

      Ruddy Butland

      Ivan Williams Cedric O'Shea Mings

      Depay Fabregas Yaya Payet Ritchie

      Giroud Lukaku Defoe

3m ITB to upgrade Lukaku to Kane/Costa/Rooney, or Fab to Haz

      Comments appreciated!

I have Ritchie already, which rules out Wilson. Deeney was brilliant in the Championship, but I'd prefer to wait and see how he does in the PL. Watford start with poor fixtures also - more reason to wait. Could be a good way to free up funds for Aguero/Sanchez return in a few GWs

This is the best balance ive found so far tiny bit worried of the four x 4.5 defenders

    Ruddy Butland
    Ivanovic Morgan Matthews Mings Holebas
    Hazard Walcott Henderson Ritchie Wanayama
    Costa Rooney Sakho

The team with the best balance doesn't have Ivanovic in it. He constrains you to having very week goalies and defenders.

Ivanovic + 1 other decent defender to play every week is viable. Then you can fill the other 3 spots with cheap fodder. All you need in goal is a bit of R&R.

With proper planning you can buy much cheaper players who can be much better value than Ivanovic. He'd have to do something pretty special at the start of the season to convince me to buy him,.

Agree that you can get better value but you can also end up with some 'good on paper' 4.5-5m defs that keep blanking or get injured/dropped. Ivan is nailed on, isn't injury prone and is very likely to outscore a number of 8.5/9m mids. He's a great option to just put in and never have to use a transfer on.

Newcastle have a lack of CBs and Taylor has the experience, althought they've been linked with Nkoulou from Marseilles.

B, in part because Downing is 1/5 on to move to 'boro, plus competition with Payet. Also Yaya on pens whilst Aguero's being rested, and Kane has good fixtures (bar GW 1)

Anymore 3 way defense rotations other than LEI BOU SUN?

    Currently running with...

    Hart - Hamer

Ivan - Clyne - (Huth Mings Matthews 3 way rotate)

    Haz - Sig - Erik - Cabaye - Wanyama

    Rooney - Benteke - Sakho

Bound to change within the next few weeks but very keen for 2 decent defenders plus 3 way rotation with 3-5-2 formation

So does the Schweini deal mean that Schneiderlin's transfer is off now? Seeing as how essential Carrick was to keep the team ticking last year, I think he should play every match he's available for. One of the most underrated players imo. Wouldn't complain if United doesn't sign Morgan anymore, with the experience and dedication that Schweini brings, I think United's midfield is just fine. Just need a CB and a backup striker and we're good to go. (Assuming Darmian is signing as well). Thoughts?

I suspect not, but it will leave United overloaded in midfield whilst still being short up front and at the back.

I really think Lukaku and Gomis have been under priced especially if both are on pens now. Shame about the fixtures but i think they could be great options moving forward (dam you Lukaku if you troll me this time i sware!!!1)

Lukaku's fixtures are awful but he's one to monitor for when the fixtures turn good around 10 weeks in. I like Gomis as an option but the fixtures are mixed.

Looks solid - unsure on whether Aguero will start due to Copa America rest however...

      I've been deliberating:
      A) Azpili & Kos
      B) Ivan & Williams

      Both 12m - thoughts?

If going with Aguero will be too risky at the start of the season then I will probably change him to Costa and save 2.0 for quick upgrade.
I think A is better option, I'd rather buy someone cheaper for one of them and strengthen front lines than go with B.
