Earlier this month, Swansea manager Garry Monk bolstered his attacking options with the capture of Braga centre-forward Eder on a three-year deal. Having plied his trade in the Primeira Liga for the past six seasons, the Portuguese striker was delighted to finally make the switch to the Liberty, after first arriving on the Swans’ radar back in 2012, when Michael Laudrup was in charge:

“I am very happy to have signed with Swansea. It’s a big club and I believe I can progress as a footballer here. The Premier League will be a step up for me, but I’ve played in the European competitions and also for my country so I’ve experienced different levels of the game. Hopefully my team-mates will help me develop and settle in quickly at the club. I can’t wait to meet all of them when I report for pre-season training. Swansea are a solid club who have big ambitions – last season confirmed that – and it’s great for me to be a part of it.”

The History

Born in Guinea-Bissau, Eder emigrated to Portugal at a young age and begun his footballing career at ADC Ademia. The six-foot-three-inch forward earned his senior debut for third-division Portuguese outfit Oliverira Hospital, producing seven goals in 23 appearances before switching to fellow third division club Tourizense, where he amassed 10 goals in 34 outings the following season.

Having cut his teeth in the lower leagues, Eder’s first taste of top-flight football arrived following a move to Academica. Throughout his four seasons with the Primeira Liga side, Eder carded 12 goals and nine assists in 83 league outings and also contributed to Academica’s first Portuguese Cup win since 1939, courtesy of a win over Sporting Lisbon.

Braga then snapped up the Portugal international in the summer of 2012 on a four-year deal. Eder’s first season with Os Arcebispos (The Archbishops) was curtailed by injury when he suffered ligament damage in February. Nonetheless, he still managed to tally an impressive 13 goals and three assists in just 18 league appearances.

Eder made just ten starts the following campaign, registering three goals and two assists. The past season saw the rangy forward handed the most pitch time since his transfer to Braga, harvesting 10 goals and one assist in 28 appearances. In all, Eder notched 26 goals and six assists in 59 league outings during his stay at the Municipal Stadium.

On the international front, Eder made his full debut for Portugal during a 2014 World Cup qualifier back in August 2012. His solitary goal for A Seleccao arrived in a friendly against Italy in June 2015.

The Prospects

Given that Swans boss Garry Monk primarily favoured a 4-2-3-1 formation last term, there doesn’t appear to be a natural role for Eder to fill. Bafetimbi Gomis is sure to retain his lone striker berth – having bagged five goals in his last six appearances of the campaign – while Gylfi Sigurdsson cemented the number ten spot with seven goals and ten assists in the season gone by. On the flanks, new boy Andre Ayew will likely be deployed in his favoured role on the left, while Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge are able servants on either wing.

Having been fielded as a centre-forward in every league appearance he made last season, Eder should serve as a back-up to Gomis in a one-striker formation – particularly when Monk has already referred to Eder as “competition” for the former Lyon frontman:

“Eder is the type of striker we’ve been looking for. He has excellent attributes; strong, quick and technically sound with the ball. He has a good pedigree and is a full international with Portugal. He fits our profile in terms of the players we’ve signed in the last two seasons because he’s young, hungry and eager to prove himself in the Premier League. He has the characteristics we are looking for and will certainly add competition to the striking department. I’m looking forward to seeing him work alongside the likes of Bafe (Gomis) and Marvin (Emnes). And the fact that we’ve got him in early is a bonus.”

Last year, however, Monk adopted a 4-3-1-2 formation on a handful of occasions, and a return to such a system would allow the Portuguese marksman to possibly earn starts in a two-man attack. That being said, Ayew also possess the skill set to partner Gomis up top and could be considered a better foil to the Frenchman in light of his propensity for making runs in behind.

Save for developments in pre-season that suggest he can establish a starting role, Eder – priced at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game – looks like one to steer clear of in the early stages. Currently, Sigurdsson and Ki Sung-yeung are the most popular outfield options for the Swans; both currently sit in 9.1% of teams, with the latter’s eight strikes and 5.5 price tag making him one of the stand-out options in the sub-6.0 midfield bracket. Gomis, meanwhile, is available for only 7.0, and having netted against the likes of Arsenal and City last season, has already highlighted his fixture-proof appeal.

The Swans kick off the 2015/16 campaign with a trip to champions Chelsea, before hosting Manchester United in Gameweek 4. Mercifully, the Welsh club’s other four fixtures (NEW, sun, wat, EVE ) in their opening half-dozen look to be more fertile grounds for their attacking contingent. For now, though, it seems Eder’s time may be restricted to minutes off the bench unless Monk switches systems in order to accommodate a two-man frontline.

    @Walsh

    9m keepers
    Azpi 4.5 4.5 4.5 4.5
    Fabregas Walcott Mane Chadli 4.5m
    Costa Rooney Lukaku

    Alternatively my defence could be
    Azpi 5.0 4.5 4.5 4.0.

Just a rough draft I did in 2 mins. Doesn't look too weak imo, it's not that hard to find a 4.5m rotation or two in defence.

      Thoughts on Haz Innsie?

Obviously he's one of the best players to own, this was just a quick draft to show Walsh what I can do without him. I may still end up with him in my GW1 squad, I'm still undecided. If I decide to start with him, I'd have to sacrifice one of my strikers... With Haz in my team I wouldn't be too nervous not owning Costa as I'd probably never captain him, so he may end up being the one to make way.

Overall I think he's still a great pick, albeit a little pricey to start the season with. It all comes down to what you can do with the 2.5m (if you get Fab instead).

Im tempted to start with Haz and then downgrade to Fab to fund Aguero. Kinda makes sense.

          A) Haz starts well, then just keep

          B) Haz starts poorly, drop to Fab before a price drop, get Aguero sparing the rest of my team.

Do they rotate home and away ? If they do, my concern would be that Swans keep a fair amount of cleansheets away from home.

Personally, Ivan + Hazard + Costa is too expensive and doesnt represent alot of value. Think Rooney as a lone striker with the fixtures is abit hard to ignore.

Yeah, I want to fit him in somewhere but I'm struggling to think where to downgrade. Hazard + Costa's are must haves imo. Especially with Hazard's ownership. Cheers 😀

I'm looking at a draft without Hazard at the moment, and I do look like it alot. But would appreciate your thoughts on these 2 options PPU

          A) Hazard Benteke Ozil/Ramsey

          B) Fabregas Costa Walcott

Yaya is alot more appealing then Mane. No doubt. He actually didn't have that bad of a season. Infact - he got only 3 points less then Mane who had a "amazing" season for Southampton.

No way. Firstly, Yaya plays a lot deeper. He hardly got attacking returns when Aguero was on the pitch. You might say that Aguero might miss the start of the season, but it'll only be GW1 imo with Chelsea in GW2.

Mane played 2247 minutes compared to Yaya's 2476.

Mane was involved in 50% of goals while on the pitch compared to Yaya's 20%.

Not much else to say really.

                10 years, 4 months ago

Another way you could look at it is that Yaya, and Man City had a poor season. He was only involved in 20% of goals and still scored similar to Mane. Mane played less minutes then Yaya because he was dropped, and with Jrod around it doesn't help his "nailedness".

He did have a poor season. A very poor one indeed, both FPL and real life. I can't see that changing. He's only worth having when he is needed as an attacking outlet which is when Aguero is out of the team.

Mane played less minutes because of ACON, arriving late (his first game was GW5 from memory), not being nailed at the start and injuries.

He's most certainly nailed in their team imo. He's their best attacking outlet, and since he can play no 10. or out wide he shouldn't miss many games especially at the start of the season.

      Morning.

B for me. Yeah the 6.0s arent inspiring for players who you want very week but with Luis going then Azpi seems nailed and Rooney so much of a better shout than Jrod. Yaya? Hes a mystery. Guess we have to go on his most recent performances (last years as opposed to the previous season)

I agree, they were the best options last season, but Fabregas and Azpi aren't far behind. Rooney is on another level to Jrod/Gomis. Huge upgrade there, whereas the downgrade wasn't.

Start a team and pick a squad this Saturday 25th July and confirm.

Then start another team and pick a squad on Sat 2nd August and confirm.

Then do your proper team. See which has the most points at the end of GW1. Realise that all your overthinking gets you nowhere.

I have a funny feeling Mourinho will bring out the best in Falcao this season. he might not be first choice striker all the time, but he didn't fit in the Manchester line-up well. Mou has a knack of bringing the best out of guys like this. Might not be useful for Fantasy Football, but i can see him snaring 10-12 goals when Costa is resting or subbed!

All I know is that as soon as he scores, people will be screaming "FALCAO IS BACK!", much like they did every time Torres scored. It got tedious.

My first RMT this season. Thoughts..........

    Schmeichel Rudd
    Azpi Skrtel Mings O'shea baker
    HAzard Wally Milner Bolasie Ritchie
    Costa Rooney Deeney

    0.0 in the bank!

i'm thinking of rotating Ritchie and Deeney!

Why Rudd. If a non-starter why not Scwarzer or Hamer?
Baker is just taking up a slot. The rest looks fine.

However just noticed youll have two 4.0 defenders, I'd be downgrading Kos and get yourself another 4.5 defender

Yeah, 2 x 4.0 is a bit of a concern, although it may be worth the gamble for just 3 weeks. Kos, Azpil and Huth look fairly locked to start.

I'm edging this way also. 3 great fixtures first up for Muzza. Is he on pens or is he second behind Jedinak?

He was every time he was on the pitch. But he did miss one near the end of the season which could see Jedinak take over

Yes because I wanted him as a cheap 5th. BR said he'll get game time

I think the FPL price setters were waiting for clarification of his role as well. He'll cost 5.0

If they're reasonable, they would consider 4.5 since Moreno is the starting LB and costs 5.0 but I wouldn't hold my breathe

Bloody annoying that. I can see him getting gametime. FPL are waiting to see if he is first choice and will price him accordingly 😕

I apologies but have to repost this:

For the first 4 GW's only:
    1) Schmeichel/Butland + Azp
    2) Courtious/4.0 + Darmian

    Both costs the same.

    Cheers!

    Morning all.

Nowhere near finalizing my squad, but this year I'm determined not to be taken in by pre-season form...

So a lot of ppl saying this the season for an early WC yet everyone agrees that the 2nd WC post gw33 dgw + bench boost strategy is near essential. Doesnt it makr sense to play the WC as late as possible(ie nov/dec) else you ll be stuck with a team for 30+ gws/end up throwing away the 2nd one before march

Whatever plans I make, I usually find I need to play my WC earlier than I'd like...

Yep. I'm not sure too many people have put much thought into it and some might subconsciously still think they have a JanWC

To me, the wild card advantage stems around a few issues.
Repairing your side: This could be the best possible option;especially early on when you first picks have failed. You can lose ground both in money and points and there is reason to use it early.
Benefiting from bench boost: This would be used to maximise double gameweeks. Usually associated to the latter part of the season or ensuring full squads are available on rearanged matches.
Injuries: I, at one point last year had 7 in my squad and if I had not used it early I would have saved myself 16 points.
All out attack and captain treble seems less affected by wild card choices.
My conclusion is get lucky, use it late with cancelled matches and DGW's arriving at around the same time. Team value increases throughout the year and you choices are greater the later the need to use them.

Early WC isn't a terrible strategy but I'd prefer not to go into the season thinking that it will be early.

Far better to set up your team for a few months and if it goes well then great. Your WC will be there no matter what happens but it seems silly to willingly chalk off an option.

I'm guessing people feel that focusing on just 3GW's gives them a better chance at early points then focusing on a couple of months. Of course this theory falls over quite easily because if they do well in the first 3GW's because they focused on those weeks then surely they'd be less willing to use their WC in GW4?

Ha, yes - double edged sword. And who wouldn't want a team that was too good?

Like most of us, I've considered the short term team but that's still very hard to get right. Your WC is not going away and you're not going to lose a mini league by the start of September so my view is that it's worth trying to keep it longer.
