Our next members article assessing the previous season takes a look at Sunderland’s campaign, with most of the focus on the impact of new manager, Dick Advocaat.

Following a 4-0 defeat to Aston Villa in March, the Dutchman replaced Gus Poyet at the helm, with his side sitting 17th in the league, just a single point clear of the relegation places. Advocaat guided the Black Cats to a 16th-place finish, after picking up three wins and three draws from their final nine matches, with their survival clinched in Gameweek 37 after a goalless draw at the Emirates. After initially turning down an offer to stay on at the Stadium of Light, the Dutchman signed a one-year deal to remain in the North East.

    I apologies, but hope to hear from you.

    Initially had a stronger defense, but have (maybe) decided to go for premium attacking assets for the first 4-7 weeks.

    Pantimilion(4.0)
    Azp - Cedric - Huth/O'Shea/Targett
    Hazard - Mata - Walcott - Mane (4.5)
    Benteke - Rooney - Sakho

    Key issues:
    1) Downgrade MID -> Upgrade DEF? (Mane & 4.5 DEF vs. Chadli and Shaw f.ex.)
    2) Mata a better alternative than f.ex. Ozil? (Double up ARS.)
    3) Rooney -> Aguero means f.ex. Walcott->6.5. Are there any potential emergin 5.5-6.5ers?

      1 Defence is fine, though light. Targett will become an issue, but you prob nknow that.
      2. I like Mata more than Ozil
      3. Yes, always is - just have to wait and see, sounds like an ok plan to get him in.

      Not too fond of Sakho, other wise a solid team.

        Defense a bit weak yea. Targett could turn into an issue, might change him to another 4.0 - if some starter shows up. Thinking of WC early on.
        Not sure of Sakho neither, but can't see any better alternative for 6.5?

          Me neither, but doesn't fill me with any confidence, though GW 2 and 3 are very good (and he scored against some of the harder teams last year as well)

      I really like the team, although I have reservations about your GK situation, and is Targett even guarenteed games?

        Targett might get 1-2 games, if lucky. See above.
        SUN have great fixtures first 10 weeks, except TOT and mun.
        And Pantimilion usually gets a lot of saves.

      1. As has been said, you may need to transfer Targett out after 2 weeks.
      2. Double up United or double up Arsenal. Dealer's choice, really.
      3. You could downgrade Mane to Tadic, and get Walcott->7.5. Even more choice in that category.

      I think, if you're using Rooney as a place holder for Aguero, you need a good transfer strategy for when you want to ship in Ags. Currently, your strat is to downgrade Walcott to a 6.5.. but there are many better options at 7.0 compared to 6.5 (Hendo, Milner, Chaldi) I think the best 6.5 option is Bolasie - who, imo, is a much worse option.
      In short, I think you need to shave 0.5 to plan for Ags.

        Start maybe 2, he's basically a placeholder 4.0 until anyone emerges. Will monitor Benteke until season starts, want him more than Lukaku, but Lukaku has a great opening fixture and has been good to me in the past.

      Personally, I'm not a fan of Sterling. I think there are better options around that price.
      Solid team other than that.. Maybe kinda weak front 3. Although, to be expected with your back line + 3 premium mids

      value doesnt rise in FPL.. it only rises after gw1 depending on changes (transfers/other parameters)..

          yeah so after transfer period closed for GW1 the clock starts ticking... if people buy him after that yes price will rise... But by how much depends on multiple factors.. last year max price rise between GWs was 0.3 i think.

          I remember I had Chester who scored 15, Fabregas, Siggy, Ramsey who all scored well, Sturridge who scored, Dzeko assist.

    As a non-british, I was wondering.
    How do you guys feel about all that money spent by the BPL ?
    All of these clubs are paying millions for those average+ players.
    Aren't you afraid this is ruining european football ?
    And once these players are in the UK, the only teams that can afford to buy them back are Madrid, Barcelona and Munich. That is meant to explode soon.

    On one hand, french teams like Marseille (ranked 4 this year) have had to part with their best striker (Gignac: >20 goals last season), playmaker (Payet best passer) and most promising player (Imbula to Porto) because they didn't qualify for the CL and couldn't afford to pay their salary (40% of what they would get in the UK). They have bought free agents like Diaby or Lassana Diarra, and got Manquillo on loan (because he didn't make it in the premier league).

    On the other hand, the last team in the BPL will receive more money than the winner of the french league, and can afford to buy the best players in the french league.

    This seems like the opposite of financial fair play.
    Quite unfair if you consider the fate of Arsenal and Chelsea last year in the CL vs, Monaco and PSG for instance.

      The system doesn't just hurt other European teams. Smaller PL teams get picked off - see Southampton for example.

      Its the greatest league for the greatest game in the world.

      It doesn't currently have the best few teams in it, though due to team cycles it often does.

      It's a complete escape from reality and if I'm honest, financial fair play never enters my mind.

        I feel that this is meant to provoke only, or severely biased.

        I think they are indeed trying to make it the best league in the world right now. But then the champions league has no meaning at all.
        That a british team that would loose 38 games in a row would win 99 million pounds per year, more than a league winner is mind blowing.

          Not agreeing with the general sentiment shouldn't be interpreted as provocation.

          Genuinely, I don't care about EPL teams being richer than Dutch teams.

          I'm 29 years old and with the odd exception, the big European teams have always been the big European teams.

          The wonderful thing about football is that you can spend 1 billion pounds on players and then in 5 years they are worth nothing.

          My counter query would be, how do you want the money to be split, like Spain? Two big teams sucking up the money, a couple of possible contenders and a load of cannon fodder?

          It's not like Burnley are winning European cups is it. But on any given day they can give arsenal a game and that's why I love the EPL.
