Our next members article assessing the previous season takes a look at Sunderland’s campaign, with most of the focus on the impact of new manager, Dick Advocaat.

Following a 4-0 defeat to Aston Villa in March, the Dutchman replaced Gus Poyet at the helm, with his side sitting 17th in the league, just a single point clear of the relegation places. Advocaat guided the Black Cats to a 16th-place finish, after picking up three wins and three draws from their final nine matches, with their survival clinched in Gameweek 37 after a goalless draw at the Emirates. After initially turning down an offer to stay on at the Stadium of Light, the Dutchman signed a one-year deal to remain in the North East.

    Would appreciate some advice.

It seems that option a and b offer the versatility of being able to choose both the keeper and defender with the better fixture each week. Where as option c alows for Cedric.

    a) Ruddy + Butland + Huth and Richards

    b) Schmeichel + Butland + O'Shea and Mings

    c) Ruddy/Schmeichel + 4m keeper + Huth and Cedric

People writing off Watford when they've done the best business of any promoted side by far. In particular, their defensive set up.

Bournemouth might go all out attack, and could get pummeled if not careful.

QPR did the same a few seasons ago and suffered.

Buying so many new players never bodes well.

They may gel eventually but I do fear for them in the opening few gws.

Different players though, Watford have punched above their weight imo. Plus, most of them are defensive minded signings, so they are trying to ensure they tighten up.

Perhaps the first few game you'll be right, but not whipping boys I don't think.

Well, that is interesting. Not sure that would hurt Jurado too much, however, as both players can play on the wing, and Jurado I think also goes up the middle with regularity. The #10 spot, and such. Definitely something to keep an eye on, however.

As for Berghuis' price in FPL, probably seems about right to me. 11 goals in 22 appearances is strong returns. Of course, different league, etc, etc.....but he does seem to carry a healthy goal threat.

I believe Ritchie, Payet and Wijnaldum will be great value.
Wijnaldum the most potential but has horrible fixtures, alas.

      A. Ayew is very good but can play everywhere in midfield, so it really depends where he is positioned. Even deep, he scores goals from time to time (5-6/season).
      J. Ayew I think will take time to find his mark.

Wilson Deeney and Lens I dont know.

I went back to the drawing board to be sure I put back all the big names I had taken off my team since FLP started:

Basically I want Ivan+Haz+Kun (or Silva/Sterling while he's not fit). Kane if possible.

    Pants-Schwarzer
    Ivan-Cedric-Francis/O'Shea (Bennett)
    Haz-Silva-Ozil-Ritchie (Wanyama)
    Rooney-Benteke-Sakho

Silva->Chadli & Rooney->Kun when Kun is fit (could be prior to GW1).

Would love to find a 5.5/6.0 fwd to afford Kane, will monitor that.

Team's alright, I'd get Kaboul instead of O'shea, think he'd inspire more confidence. 5.5 forwards, could be a slight gamble but Deeney and Wilson could do well, scored for fun last year. Could swap Sakho out for one of those and get Kane (although personally I'd wait on the Kane front)

MU might be Kane's first game, yes. But Benteke seems like a gamble too. Deeney has poor fixtures, maybe Wilson (I'd have 3 Bournemouth 🙂 )

O'Shea is the team captain, I picked him for nailed-onness, but Kaboul might work too.

        Thanks !!

    Alright guys,

Firstly, I want to thank the site for allowing me to gain my first top 10k finish last season. Cracking articles and the members tools were brilliant for generating ideas.

Had a first draft of my team which I'm reasonably happy with, with the exception of possibly too much Arsenal, and potentially too weak a midfield. Thinking about Deeney/Callum Wilson in attack too. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, team is as follows.

    Ruddy- Butland
    Azp-Koscielny-Alderweireid-Kaboul- Saylor
    Haz-Walcott-Hendo-Ritchie-Wanyama
    Roonpig- Giroud- Lukaku

    Cheers gang

Theo and giroud is madness as they will often be competing for same role. Downgrade to Wilson and upgrade Ritchie to ozil or Ramsey. Or silva if you can afford him
You could also take 0.5 off that defence. Lose Toby for another 4.5. Spurs just don't keep enough clean sheets.

      Defense is good
Yeah if u have Theo and Giroud it's too much.
I would downgrade Giroud put in a 'Lowe forward' I.e Wilson or Deeney and upgrade WNyama to a decent midfielder
      Nice choices at around 7mil

Thanks for the replies. Depay- The walcott/giroud thing is something that was worrying me, especially now Walcott looks threatening for the striker berth. Will watch the charity shield and see. I'll have an experiment with Wilson, see what I can do with the funds that frees up.

Gold monster- Thanks, saylor is in as a dead pick until a 4.0 is playing. Kaboul is in because of the nice Sunderland fixtures at the start, will have a rethink.

Dont think Kocs is worth .5m more than Mertesacker tbh.
Kosc might get an occatinal extra goal, but more inclined to get a Yellow, and have had ankle problems, Mertesacker almost never injured. Both 100% nailed imo.

Maybe try to find a less chosen 4.5 than Wanyama, with so high selection he is a danger for price decrease.

      Otherwise looking guuud.

I don't have high hopes for Lukaku and Hendo, but thats more peronsal preference than anything else, so you maby shouldn't listen to that.

Contratz on you position last year

    I am seeing RMTS for a long time all 3-4-3 . From what I have seen only I have a 3-5-2 .
Am I missing something something obvious ?
    Here's the team
    myhill/Hennessey
    Ivan Kos Targett O'Shea huth
    Silva fabregas wally repay Ritchie
    Rooney lukaku 4.5

Money from wally or Silva for lukaku to kun when he scores a goal.

Even with Ritchie, I can't make an honest 352 with Hazard+Kun.

Yes, i think. Sterling might be played up front, no? I actually think aguero will play the first game, some minutes. Wasn't it last season he was injured all summer and there was uncertainty whether he'd play, and he did. sanchez will be given more of a rest. I think sterling up front aguero on for 25 mins ready for chelsea is likely.

personally for 5.5 I prefer Defoe

PL proven with good fixtures and I think Advocaat is working on making Sunderland better in attack

Of course, I'm not saying that Wilson or Deeney for that matter, can't improve, either of them could have a great season, if they get off to a good start, confidence will be flowing and who knows what they could end up with.

I just think people are blinded by the fact they got loads of goals in the Championship, when in reality Jerome scored just as many, with less minutes, but no one is considering him as he has failed in the PL before.

Costa got two points for the season more than Berahino but is priced 4.5 more. I suppose that was in less minutes, and his first season. But still, do people buy players based on their end of season total score?

    1. Long Juan Silva
      • 11 Years
      10 years, 7 months ago

No, because it's highly likely you won't own them all season, so the total season points can be a very miss-leading statistic.

      1. aehii
        • 12 Years

But every season I say to myself; play the long game, because you swap someone just as his two duff games have gone and he's ready to score again..at least with aguero even though he's always injured he scores loads. Costa is overpriced compared to kane and berahino and pelle, because he plays for chelsea.

Like this season, i should own Henderson for all of it if I am to own him at all.

I feel the same. Costa went hiding towards the end. Having said that if Berahino does move to Spuds his price will ascend, ofcourse the team matters as you have improvement in the entire build up play.
