After weeks of negotiations, Norwich finally completed the signing of Hull’s Robbie Brady for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £7 million. The Republic of Ireland international penned a three-year deal with the Canaries and joins Graham Dorrans, Youssouf Mulumbu and Andre Wisdom in making the move to Carrow Road this summer.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Brady spoke of his happiness after dropping a division with the relegated Tigers:

“The feeling of being wanted is something I’m so grateful to the manager for, and to everyone who’s been behind it. It’s another opportunity to play at the highest level, which is where everyone wants to be. I’ll relish it, and will hopefully play as many games as possible. It’s a new chapter for me at Norwich now and I’m raring to go.”

THE HISTORY

Born in Dublin, Brady was spotted by Manchester United scouts playing for local side St. Kevin’s Boys. He joined the club’s academy shortly after his 16th birthday in January 2008, and made his debut for the reserves just months later. Brady played under-18 and reserve team football for the next few seasons, before graduating to the reserves on a permanent basis for the 2010/11 campaign.

The Irishman was sent out on loan to Hull City ahead of the 2011/12 season, and went on to make 39 appearances during the campaign, registering three goals and a couple of assists. Brady returned to Old Trafford the following year but he only managed one senior appearance for United, however, coming on as a late substitute in a cup win over Newcastle in September 2012. An initial loan return to Hull was made permanent in January 2013, with Brady’s four goals and 13 assists in 32 appearances guided the Tigers from the Championship back into the top-flight.

Brady went on to star for the Tigers on their return to the Premier League, scoring three goals and providing one assist in 16 appearances, before undergoing surgery to cure a hernia problem, missing out on the club’s run to the FA Cup final, where they lost 3-2 to Arsenal. Last season, Brady made 27 league appearances, registering two assists, but the Tigers two-year stay in the Premier League came to an end as they finished 18th.

Having represented the Republic of Ireland at under-17, under-19 and under-21 levels, Brady made his international debut in a 4-1 win against Oman in September 2012, scoring once and setting up two of the goals. Brady has since amassed 12 caps for his country, scoring three times.

THE PROSPECTS

Having featured in several different positions for both Hull and the Republic of Ireland, Brady should provide Norwich boss Alex Neil with plenty of flexibility. Speaking about his big summer signing, Neil revealed Brady would primarily feature down the left flank:

“I’m really pleased to sign Robbie. As everyone’s aware, we’ve been chasing him for quite a while, He’ll be an absolutely perfect fit for us. Hopefully he can go on and show everything that we think he’s capable of. He’s dynamic, he’s got good energy to get up and down the pitch, and he’s got a fantastic left foot which makes him a real danger at set-pieces. He’s got a lot of things in his locker. It gives us good competition down the left side.”

In terms of tactics, Neil tended to operate with a lone striker system after taking the helm last year, rolling out 4-4-1-1, 4-1-4-1 and 4-2-3-1 formations. Bradley Johnson shone on the left flank, racking up 15 goals, but with Martin Olsson likely to miss the start of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery in the summer, Johnson has been occasionally fielded at left-back in pre-season. Brady also has plenty of experience in the position, particularly at international level, and offers an alternative until Olsson is ready for action.

The Swede is expected back shortly, though, and his return may well see Brady oust Johnson down the left of midfield. Certainly, he possesses greater pace than Johnson and is more of a natural wide man, with his cultured left foot able to deliver great quality into the box. Alternatively, Neil could utilise him centrally in the role in “the hole” behind a lone striker.

Coming in at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Brady sets you back the same as Johnson and Nathan Redmond, whose place looks secure on the right of midfield. Neil’s words suggest he’ll be handed a fair share of dead-ball duties, whilst Brady will be also hoping to climb up the spot-kick pecking order, having occasionally taken penalties for Hull.

The Canaries have been handed a kind start to their return to the top flight, with their first six home fixtures (CPL, STO, BOU, LEI, WBA, SWA) particularly friendly. Away trips to Sunderland and Newcastle in the opening nine Gameweeks are also reasonable match-ups, so Brady could provide Fantasy managers with a decent budget option. Given that he’s joined with just over a week until the season starts, he may need time to settle into his new surrounds before some consider taking the plunge.

    @ZaSa

I bet that sht was crazy! Not as exciting here obv but I def did enjoy it. Seeing my parents cry put in perspective for me. History baby!

Im so mad I was so close to flying down there because Lan Chile was offering a airplane ticket + ticket to a game but I was terrified it was going to end up in disappointment.

Alexis has massive balls to pull off that panenka. So proud of our boys and what will come out of it.

    Vidal to Bayern
Aranguiz could very well sign for Leicester rather than Leverkusen
Wonder where Vargas will end up this season if Napoli decide to loan him out again

Hehe, I can imagine mate, there is nothing like the passion Chileans have for the sport. Hearing the national anthem alone on TV gives me goosebumps, truly moving.

Damn! That's a real downer man, though understandable since no one could have seen this coming 😉

Ooof, so much class. Same, I think it'll pave the way for the next generation with Henriquez, Castillo, Pavez, etc & gives us some sincere optimism in world football.

Huge signings there, Vidal is great for Bayern now with Schweini gone. Pep has severely lacked that midfield enforcer on his team since he was at Barca with the likes of Masch & Biscuits. Bayern finally have some bark in the centre, Vidal's a warrior.

😯 Surely he'll go to Leverkusen no? I understand he's said he'd rather go there, though it seems part-owned by a third party called Group DIS. Champions league football, vs a bottom side PL outfit who'll be paying better wages. He's 26 already, at his prime too, can only see Leicester stunting his growth imo.

No idea Rubz, he's a mystery. World class for Chile with an outstanding record, but looks like only Sampaoli knows how to use him properly.

Yea apparently he prefers/agreed to them verbally but then Leicester had a meeting with Internazionale a day or two ago I believe and they offered them a much bigger fee and Aranguiz a massive contract. Something like 11 million pounds. May just be rumors though. Nothing is on paper yet so who knows. He might be better off at Leverkusen but would love to see him in the PL week in and week out.

    Afternoon, all.

Here's where my tinkering has taken me - to a rather silly 3-5-2 with power five in midfield, until a WC probably in GW4.

    Your considered opinions appreciated 🙂

    Schmeichel
    Mertesacker / Francis / Huth
    Hazard / Walcott / Sterling / Ozil / Mane
    Kane / C Wilson

    Bench: ??? / Cedric / ??? / ???

Leaves me with two options (note first two and Cedric will likely rotate in for GW2 and GW3):

    A) D Sakho, Prodl, 4.5 keeper
    B) Deeney, Jenkinson, Schwartzer

    Cheers 😀

3-5-2 is one thing, but rotating attackers is quite another. Would Sakho play most weeks?
The other problem is that getting Aguero is problematic. You need to ditch Kane or Hazard to make it happen.

I'm surprised there are so few tems with only 5.0 and 4.5 defenders. Beyond the value to be found at 5.0, I don't like the idea of starting a defender every game, which you pretty much have to do with any defender at 5.5 or higher. Are people too lazy to find a decent 5-pick-3 rotation, or are they afraid of getting the rotation wrong?

It's hard. I've got a 5.5/5.0/4.5/4.5/4.5 I'm reasonably happy with, but it's a really hard game to play.

Also, historically defenders are just better value than midfielders - especially at the start of the season, when I have a theory that attacking rhythm is harder to hit than defensive shape.

        I'm at 5.0, 5.0, 5.0, 4.5, 4.5.
Defenders may be better value if you look at points per game. But most metrics of value don't take rotation into account. A good rotation should give you as many points as more expensive options.

definitely possible. Personally, would want to have 1 defender that I play week in week out. Kosc has good aerial ability and Arsenal do get their fair share of corners, of which Ozil and Cazorla are great at delivering.

I will only play defenders with attacking threat every week..i will bench kosc against manc for eg.

people feel unsafe without a premium def..and having one indeed give u flexibility to downgrade.

And secondly premium defenders are cheaper than before..mert clyne shaw available at 5.5..azpi kompany at 6

At the same time there is no 4m defender..making the difference between shaw and mings for eg only 1m..last season shaw(6m) moore(4m) is 2m difference

The downgrade flexibility is a good argument. At least it is easy to downgrade Ivanovic to a cheaper option in order to fund a big-hitter up front.
Still, I'd swap a midfielder to jump on a midfielder bandwagon, than to downgrade a defender in order to fund a midfielder upgrade. It's a question of making one transfer or two. I don't think there are any expensive defender bandwagons that I would jump on, either.

Hey there. Just on and catching up on the posts. I agree with your comments re 4-3-3 and again here. Just doesn't make sense to me to lower your team's ceiling by loading up on the supposedly value players in defense.

In addition, many disregard the fact that you have to spend 8.5-9.0m on your two dead spots. A good rotation should get you a top 7-10 defender for an actual cost of only 4.5m.

      I am currently on

        Hey TM245!
You're absolutely right. Spending 7.0 for Ivanovic might be fine in a vacuum, but since you have to fill the bench spot, you won't come out ahead. A good rotation should win every time.
Kolarov, eh? You just can't resist, can you?

Right, instead of treating your 4.5m spent on the last two defender spots like the dead money it is for the fifth mid spot, use it like an opportunity to enhance the potential for your other cheap defenders.

Kolarov Ivan and Baines/Coleman are the only four defenders I would consider going for at the beginning of the season, so I went for the cheapest one who is also the most spectacular.

Hello DZ, it's been a while since ive been on here! I have a few quick question as I try and catch up...

    1) Siggy = essential?
    2) double Saints defense = essential?
    3) has Maureen declared Costa fit this week?
    4) anyone have the DZ league code?

Cheers to a buzzed, entertaining and successful FPL season fellow DZrs!!

      1. Siggy essential - why?
      2. Not imo - one will do
      3. Presser today
      4. Innsie might

      1) No.
      2) No Yet.
      3) His injury isn't something major, apparently.
      4) I would like to know this too.

Wouldn't start with this if I'm honest.
GW4 onwards with this team looks more than amazing.
(At that time Milner/Ritchie to whoever is firing in that price range)

      For GW1 I don't like it 🙁

looks good but you need Ag or Haz for Capt options for week 1 and that ain't there.
      so... Ag> Kane
sterling> Haz 1.0 itb get 2 playing keepers for at least 9.0. IMO GL

    Hello all.
    Thoughts on this?

    Schmeichel, Hennessy
    Azpi, Coates, Huth, Mings, Holebas
    Hazard, Sterling, Ozil, Chadli, Anya
    Benteke, Rooney, Pelle

Trying to choose between Hazard, Ozil and Pelle Or Walcott, Manè and Costa. Which combination do you prefer?

Nice, Azpi + 4x4.5 is interesting.

Front line is beautiful and I see quite some points from mids.

        Haz, Ozil, Pelle
        or
        Costa, Walcott, Mane

could go either way imo Hazards ownership is a worry though.

        Yeah 4.5 Sun-Lei and Bou-Wat rotations

    Another RMT..opinion plz!!

The Defence: Covered all of the best defensive sides incl. ARS, CHE, SOU & LIV

    Cech, Butland

    Azpi, Cedric, Clyne, Francis, Huth

The MIDFIELD: 3 of the best MIDs combined with probably the ones who would probably shine this season.

    Hazard, Sterling, Ozil, Ritchie, Redmond

The FRONT THREE: 1 Striker in form, another one central to attack in his team & the third i feel is gonna explode this season from his goals i have looked at.

    Pelle, Rooney, Deeney

Pulis knows how to defend, let's not forget that. They will be organized and limit strong opponents to low percentage shots....ie more saves for Myhill 😀

You've got me rethinking my defensive strategy that's for sure. Alot can be done with a strong mix of 5 and 4.5s in defence...hmm.

        1. Slam
          • 10 Years

It sure can, and these 'strong' teams with expensive defenders can keep less CS then a good rotation with teams that try and grind games from the get go.

I feel that the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, etc. will do very well attacking wise but not so well defense if you know what I mean.

          Just my two cents

Azpilicueta could be of fantastic value.

In my opinion though I think CHE will get their CS's later in the season.
Azpi has the attacking returns; as well as, a major candidate for Bonus.

Sooooo much love for Theo, I must say i'm surprised given the rotation risk.

Ownership only at 8.2% also. Maybe 8.2% are all on FFS!!

Think I'd rather Lens and Sterling for the same price

Would a Cedric and Fonte double up be worthwhile to start the season?

Seeing very little love for Harry Kane on here,

He is 9.5 , but his scoring last year would justify that price, still the focal point of the spurs attack and a selfish player, maybe on pens too..

if we look at the top team striker options
    1. Chelsea - costa injury worry
    2. Giroud - donkey/walcott rotation
    3. City - Only Aguero worth it
    4. Utd - everyone's got rooney
    5. Lpool - Benteke barely played with the team, needs time
    6. Soton - Pelle decent shout, but lot of forward options
    7. Spurs - Kane the only hope with Adebayor leaving and Soldado being utterly useless

since yesterday there has been some love actually. i used to think he was too expensive but now i guess he might be a good option. need to decide between giroud and him

think the big problem with Kane is that he no longer ridiculously cheap 😆

no doubt he is a decent option
