After weeks of negotiations, Norwich finally completed the signing of Hull’s Robbie Brady for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £7 million. The Republic of Ireland international penned a three-year deal with the Canaries and joins Graham Dorrans, Youssouf Mulumbu and Andre Wisdom in making the move to Carrow Road this summer.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Brady spoke of his happiness after dropping a division with the relegated Tigers:

“The feeling of being wanted is something I’m so grateful to the manager for, and to everyone who’s been behind it. It’s another opportunity to play at the highest level, which is where everyone wants to be. I’ll relish it, and will hopefully play as many games as possible. It’s a new chapter for me at Norwich now and I’m raring to go.”

THE HISTORY

Born in Dublin, Brady was spotted by Manchester United scouts playing for local side St. Kevin’s Boys. He joined the club’s academy shortly after his 16th birthday in January 2008, and made his debut for the reserves just months later. Brady played under-18 and reserve team football for the next few seasons, before graduating to the reserves on a permanent basis for the 2010/11 campaign.

The Irishman was sent out on loan to Hull City ahead of the 2011/12 season, and went on to make 39 appearances during the campaign, registering three goals and a couple of assists. Brady returned to Old Trafford the following year but he only managed one senior appearance for United, however, coming on as a late substitute in a cup win over Newcastle in September 2012. An initial loan return to Hull was made permanent in January 2013, with Brady’s four goals and 13 assists in 32 appearances guided the Tigers from the Championship back into the top-flight.

Brady went on to star for the Tigers on their return to the Premier League, scoring three goals and providing one assist in 16 appearances, before undergoing surgery to cure a hernia problem, missing out on the club’s run to the FA Cup final, where they lost 3-2 to Arsenal. Last season, Brady made 27 league appearances, registering two assists, but the Tigers two-year stay in the Premier League came to an end as they finished 18th.

Having represented the Republic of Ireland at under-17, under-19 and under-21 levels, Brady made his international debut in a 4-1 win against Oman in September 2012, scoring once and setting up two of the goals. Brady has since amassed 12 caps for his country, scoring three times.

THE PROSPECTS

Having featured in several different positions for both Hull and the Republic of Ireland, Brady should provide Norwich boss Alex Neil with plenty of flexibility. Speaking about his big summer signing, Neil revealed Brady would primarily feature down the left flank:

“I’m really pleased to sign Robbie. As everyone’s aware, we’ve been chasing him for quite a while, He’ll be an absolutely perfect fit for us. Hopefully he can go on and show everything that we think he’s capable of. He’s dynamic, he’s got good energy to get up and down the pitch, and he’s got a fantastic left foot which makes him a real danger at set-pieces. He’s got a lot of things in his locker. It gives us good competition down the left side.”

In terms of tactics, Neil tended to operate with a lone striker system after taking the helm last year, rolling out 4-4-1-1, 4-1-4-1 and 4-2-3-1 formations. Bradley Johnson shone on the left flank, racking up 15 goals, but with Martin Olsson likely to miss the start of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery in the summer, Johnson has been occasionally fielded at left-back in pre-season. Brady also has plenty of experience in the position, particularly at international level, and offers an alternative until Olsson is ready for action.

The Swede is expected back shortly, though, and his return may well see Brady oust Johnson down the left of midfield. Certainly, he possesses greater pace than Johnson and is more of a natural wide man, with his cultured left foot able to deliver great quality into the box. Alternatively, Neil could utilise him centrally in the role in “the hole” behind a lone striker.

Coming in at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Brady sets you back the same as Johnson and Nathan Redmond, whose place looks secure on the right of midfield. Neil’s words suggest he’ll be handed a fair share of dead-ball duties, whilst Brady will be also hoping to climb up the spot-kick pecking order, having occasionally taken penalties for Hull.

The Canaries have been handed a kind start to their return to the top flight, with their first six home fixtures (CPL, STO, BOU, LEI, WBA, SWA) particularly friendly. Away trips to Sunderland and Newcastle in the opening nine Gameweeks are also reasonable match-ups, so Brady could provide Fantasy managers with a decent budget option. Given that he’s joined with just over a week until the season starts, he may need time to settle into his new surrounds before some consider taking the plunge.

I'm going with Fletcher. I can't see me wanting more than two other West Brom players ever, Fletcher is captain so he's nailed on and he should grab that extra clean sheet point fairly regularly. Every little bit helps.

Personally wouldn't pick either from the start but if I had to....

Silva. Safer pick when you're already taking a gamble on Ritchie hitting the ground running. If Sterling takes off you can happily downgrade, if he doesn't you still have a proven pick.

Mane is a great player but I feel he is over priced so you could downgrade him to someone like Bolasie which would give you 1.5 and then upgrade Sakho to Pelle

      1. rjcv177
        • 10 Years
        10 years, 7 months ago

U think Pelle is better option than Mane? Mane runs the show. And Bolasie is such a BAD pick. Really hate it.
Right now i'm wondering if HAZ is essential, after gw1 it's not good for off points on Chelsea.

Talk you out of it? 😀
      Panti-Sunderland has been shite preseason.
Ivan-Good player, but just too expensive. Also, Chelsea has some fixtures that are harder than one might think at first glance, and they historically aren't even that tight defensively at the start of the season. Ivanovics will have more defensive orders than usual when facing better opposition, limiting his attacking returns.
Darmian- With so much uncertainty over ManUs defensive stability and GK situation I'd stay well away from their defense at the start.
Francis- Could get defender from a team used to the PL for the same price as this newcomer.
Haz- Okay, really can't think of much wrong here 😀
Walcott- Not necessairly nailed, also the ever present injury risk. I see a lot of frustration and short cameos coming up.
Sterling- Very unclinical in front of goal. Besides he's a little b*tch.
Mane- Could be good, but on the other hand.. a lot of candidates for 1M less that are just as likely to do well.
      Ritchie- Risky..unproven.
Rooney- Running out of argumentation energy.. he might not be used to his new role up front..or something lol
Sakho- No idea why you'd want to waste a striker spot on a Liverpool defender..
Targett- Wasting one of three Soton spots on a 4M defender?

Everyone will be scrambling to get Aguero for the WAT game and nice run of fixtures, but surely you'd want Sterling as well for such a great run? Any plans for him too? You may not want to ditch Walcott at that time...

Too many variables to plan extra transfers on top of the Aguero one. You could be looking at bringing in Silva rather than Sterling, Walcott could be on fire or on the bench, erm.....

Well, actually they're the only two variables I can think of. Still, it's too much for me to wrap my head around before GW1 has even happened.

You think both Sterling and Silva could cover Aguero's points?

I think I rather have both of those instead of Kun + 6.0 mid

Would be easier for me since I'm going 3-5-2.

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 14 Years

I don't think they could cover two Kuns, ie Kun(C).

He's the best player in FPL, so is extra valuable for captaincy.

      2. Just A Hat
        • 16 Years

but it's too risky captaining Sterling and Silva, Sterling will get 2 points most games, Silva can score big or small in any game.

        Aguero is consistent

You might be able to split the points between Sterling and Silva but you can't split the captaincy. Aguero is, overall, the best captain pick in FPL. Not having him could hurt. A lot.

Interesting. So with an unlimited budget, you would all (with the exception of Andy) go with a 5.5m GK. I'm curious then to understand why with a 100m budget, many go with Azpilicueta + budget keeper?

That made sense in previous years when the Chelsea keeper was 6m+, but he's not this year. Cech + Courtois combined scored 159 points last year.

      Courtois + Mertesacker/Clyne/Cedric + 0.5m
      Pantilimon + Azpilicueta

Why would you go the latter when you've accepted that you want to play a Chelsea defender every week? You're also being forced to play a Sunderland defender every week.

I see a few places you could get that extra cash. Either downgrade Sterling (early fixtures aren't great), Darmian (I wouldn't trust United's defence at all atm), or Cech (think cheap keepers are the way to go given save points potential).

Or you could downgrade Benteke to Pelle instead and have .5 to spend elsewhere.

    The Missing Striker Theorem

13/14 - Chelsea are the best team for shots taken. But only 3rd for goals scored. Despite taking the most shots they only had 70% of the goals of the top teams (Liv, City).
Next year they sort out their big striker weakness with Costa, team conversion % goes up 2.3%. Costa is a big FF hit, the final piece of an already good attack.

14/15 - Liverpool are the 3rd best team for shots taken. But only 7th for goals scored. Despite taking 88% of the shots of the top team (City) the only had 62% of the goals.
Next year they sort out their big striker weakness with Benteke and...

Just something I am pondering anyway.

Benteke will make a mockery of his 8.5m price tag. Liverpool are far more creative than Villa.

    Ivanovic vs Azpi.....Discuss

I've always missed Ivan's hauls and then knee jerk him in whereon he gets the square root of f'all until I get rid.

    Ivan starts seasons strongly historically

Surprised when I looked at Points Per Game, 4.7 Ivan, 4.6 Azpi.

Azpi should have more game time this year, so Total Score should be closer this year?

Have now switched to Azpi based on this - 1 mil can make a bigger impact in midfield.

I'm intending to start with Ivan and then downgrade to Azpi to release funds for Aguero and hoping I've caught Ivan's early points.

I've got your keepers they rotate and don't have a top 4 until like gw8. I wouldn't do it with BOU/Wat defenders, but keepers should get saves.

Turner makes little sense I'd go with a nailed Bassong or Wisdom now.

I'm rotating Wanayama and Vardy. Good luck

I'm stuck! Which team and what changes to it if needed? I prefer A but have been told to spend the 2m instead of keep it which I'm not sure about. Thanks is advance.

    A) Kasper (Butland)
    Ivan Huth Cedric (Francis Baker)
    Fabregas Depay Sterling Ozil (Wanyama)
    Pelle Costa Deeney

Have 2m itb for Aguero when fit

    B) Cech (Hennessey)
    Azpi Darmian Cedric Huth (Baker)
    Hazard Depay Silva (BJohnson Wanyama)
    Giroud Costa Deeney

    0 itb

Spending the 2m depends on when you plan to wildcard. If you are thinking of wildcarding before gw4, spending that money now is absolutely fine. Perhaps leave a little just in case of price rises but you could probably spend some.

In fact, there's a lot of money in defence there. You could easily lose one of either Darmian or Cedric in B and improve the midfield. Also, if you do go with B, I'd get rid of Baker and find another 4.5 defender as he's unlikely to play.

      1. Areid13
        • 12 Years

But Baker is 4m and I'd probably sell Darmian so who would you recommend in midfield?

What I'd be tempted to do is take Costa out (you've got Hazard for Chelsea attacking coverage anyway), take Darmian out, bring in someone like Coates or Francis and then use the 1.5 saved to upgrade Johnson to someone like Henderson or Milner.

What do we think of this?
    Schemichel (Rudd)
    Cedric Azpi Mertesacker (O'Shea Smith)
    Sterling Mané Ozil Hazard (Coquelin)
    Sakho Luaku Rooney

Finally settled on Mané. Still not convinced on Sterling, Ritchie, Milner and Hendo are all calling me.

Lukaku is a symbol that I don't know who I trust up front anymore.
Costa was in, Costa is out. Pelle was in, Pelle is out. etc.
I might downgrade to Deeney and upgrade Coquelin and play 3-5-2 maybe.
