We continue our members articles looking back at last season with a review of West Brom’s displays under Tony Pulis. The Welshman took the helm after Alan Irvine was sacked – with the Baggies lying 16th in the Premier League on December 30 – and ultimately steered them to a 13th-placed finish, a full nine points clear of the drop zone. We’ll compare the attacking numbers from both managers’ spells in charge, and assess the similarities and differences in the statistics.

Irvine was a surprise appointment ahead of the 2014/15 season, having endured difficult spells in charge at Preston and Sheffield Wednesday. After managing a mere four wins from Albion’s first 19 matches, the Scot was relieved of his duties, with Pulis taking over on January 1, signing a two-and-a-half-year deal. Under the former Stoke and Crystal Palace boss, the Baggies secured seven victories from 18 matches, including wins against Man United and Chelsea in the final months of the season.

    Good article this.

Re WBA defence, I can see it being all four centre backs which hopefully bodes well for Myhill owners...

    Dawson MacAuley Chester Lescott

Clean sheet me up Mr Pulis!

I've been tinking a lot and think I have decided on my final team..

    Butland Speroni
    Ivan Kos O'Shea Huth Bassong
Hazard Mata Walcott Ki SY Wanyama
    Rooney Pelle Wilson

    (1.5ITB for Rooney>Ags GW4.. also planning Pelle> Benteke when the fix's improve)

Do you think doubling up on UTD for the first few weeks is a good idea?
I watched the RMT surgery yday and Mark/ Jonty mentioned doubling up on Arsenal to start.. but didn't mention doubling up on Utd at all.

    Thanks JH

Yeah, I'm going to have to make a double transfer.. undecided who to swap out yet. I guess it will depend on start of season form.

        Roo>Ags Mata/Wally> 8.0to7.0

What is your plan? I don't think anyone has really covered the best strategy for Ags clearly on FFS.

Sorry, quick repost, bottom of the page 2 pages ago:

My 1 RMT of the year...

    CECH - BUTLAND
    CEDRIC - O'SHEA - MINGS - HUTH - pudil
    FABREGAS - STERLING - CHADLI - MANE - WALCOTT
    costa - PELLE - DEFOE

    £1M in the bank

by GW 6 would be a front 8 of with 4 transfers (none in the 1st 2 weeks) :

    FABREGAS - WANYAMA - CHADLI - 6.5M - SANCHEZ
    costa - AGUERO - DEFOE

If it's all going south rapidly I'll WC GW6...

    Thoughts?

    Cheers

I know what you mean but all the DEF teams rotate home game wise pretty well with only 1 or 2 top 7 teams across the first 10 GW's. Could be risky because the teams they play are in or around them but they do have home "advantage".

City have invested 100s of millons of £s into their academy

I do wonder if the departures of Jovetic, Dzeko may be the start of them giving some of the kids a chance

    Then again this is City

They're doing something wrong. How come we can produce Walcott, Bale, The Ox, Shaw and now emerging talents like JWP and Reed on a tiny proportion of their budget?

because they've only started taking youth development seriously in the last couple of seasons

Saints, West Ham, United have been taking it seriously for a long time

Though mind you, who have United produced of genuine top class quality in the last decade that have made an impact in their first XI? They're a long way from the days of Becks/Giggs/Scholes etc. I mean, granted, they need to be a much greater quality to have that impact than Saints players do. But Bale, Walcott and The Ox would have made a difference and they went to the trouble of buying Shaw.

            and Schneiderlin

It's true and most of our best prospects (Januzaj, Perreira) have come from abroad

I'm hopeful on Wilson and Lingard

Saints can't take credit for Schneiderlin. Bought in for £1m+ from Strasbourg at 18, which was pretty big money for us at that stage. 🙂

Yes, I'd like to see them produce talent again. It's always exciting when a youngster gets a go at a top club.

It is incredibly difficult to bring youngsters through at elite clubs - the ones that are competing for the PL title and the CL. Dropping points is not an option and the pressure is high. That mitigates against throwing youngsters in. Someone above mentioned United but I can't remember when a United Academy graduate last became a 1st team regular. Even £30m Shaw could hardly get a game last season.

Chelsea currently have the most successful Academy in the country if you measure it by results at youth level (up to U-21). They have some great prospects. But without them first performing very impressively when out on loan it's going to be hard for them to get the breakthrough at Chelsea. This is a big season for Bamford, MVG and Atsu for that reason - and none of them are actually Academy players.

Kane is a very good case in point. Had Adebayor and/or Soldado started the last season well would he have got a chance to become a regular? Doubtful. It certainly wasn't Pocchettino's plan at the start of the season. He was lucky that the opportunity came when Spurs really had no other option and then he was good enough to take advantage of it.

Maybe i'm getting old but I got a PS4 last year and apart from The Last of Us and getting into Fifa when the season gets underway there are no games I want to play. Has there been a serious lack of good titles on Next Gen or should I just sell my PS4?

I would say the problem is the PS4. I play PC and i spend less than £50 a year on games and fail to get bored. The thing is the modding scene and and active communities even in smaller games (e.g killing floor) make the experience more rewarding

I agree the cost up front is more but over the long run you save money. I spent 900 pounds a couple years back on a top range custom model It still runs games far better than the current gen consoles and will continue to for the rest of the generation. Without lower cost of games (steam sale, thanks gaben) and no fee for online pay you really do save money

You're doing something wrong, i've had a PS4 since day one and this year i'm really having trouble finishing all the games because they're too many. Dying Light, The Witcher 3, Bloodborne, Broken Age and Arkham Knight which came out only in the end of june. Now i'm waiting for Until Dawn and King's Quest just came out but i have to postpone it because otherwise i'm not going to be able to finish one of them. In the fall there's going to be a waterfall of amazing games. Scared.

I do like the look of Arkham, just none of the titles you mention jumped out at me, maybe need to buy one of them and stick with it.

I came up with this last night. It really allows a top midfield but maybe has a restriction on flexibility. Defence rotates well.

    Schmeichel - Butland
    Lescott - Williams - Cedric - Mings - Huth
Sterling - Walcott - Hazard - Mane- Depay
    Kane - Sakho - RVW

Obviously RVW would sit on the bench.

Anyone else going with Liam Moore as their 4.0 defender? I think he could be the best bet, especially with Morgan potentially missing early on and the tinkerman as manager! Just a thought, he is young so could be given a chance...would be interesting to hear a Leicester fans opinion or anyone else's for that matter!
